  1. Boski,

What are your thoughts on the outcome of this game? The Mustangs have some size up front, and on both sides of the ball this year. Maplewood is also typically big and tough in the trenches. How are the Panthers in the trenches this year? Also, how accurate is the Maplewood QB? If he's accurate, and makes good decisions, there's probably the potential for some good yards through the air.

My prediction is if Maplewood is good in the trenches, and doesn't turn the ball over, they will prevail. If not, the Mustangs will earn a "W". I know Lipscomb, has not yet beaten the Panthers, but if recall correctly, in 2009 and I think one other year (maybe 2010) Lipscomb had the lead until mid to late 4th quarter. Then, one of the Panther running backs (usually that quick kid, Vanleer) would break a long run or two, and deliver the win for Maplewood.

  2. Cleggy, you are normally a pretty reasonable poster with good insight, but, barring injuries or loss of another key player, CPA will win its 3rd in a row. I remember last summer there were several posters who said CPA would not be able to repeat due to the loss of Bradshaw and Wharton, but look what happened. And if you think Blackwell is Div. II, you lose all credibility here. CPA has 4 returning starters (with 6 rings) and a backup center who would start for any other team in the state. Not to mention that they will be senior dominated. Remember your prediction come March and be prepared for some crow stew.

Is the Spann kid still at CPA, and on the team? If not, where is he now?

  3. As much as I'd like to see the Mustangs pull an upset, I don't see it. Had they gone in as a higher seed, they might make it to the second round. There's always a chance, but not much of one. I think Lipscomb played a slightly tougher schedule, but not by a lot. The three teams on LA's schedule who are nomally tough to beat (Maplewood, Overton and Goodpasture) are all down this year. All of the teams Lipscomb beat had losing records. Lipscomb is getting better from the low last year, but I just think they'll come up short this year. I'm just hopeful, they bring their "A" game, and keep it close for as long as possible.

  4. Not taking Lipscomb lightly by no means what so ever.We all know they have a legend of a coach and what he's capable of.Super excited of this classic match up considering the history between the two schools.Big rivalry renewed Friday at the Brickyard.

I think this post says it best, as Lipscomb also respects GC and its coaching staff, and knows this will be a tough game. To answer a few questions that have been raised. The MustangFanPage is not being ignored because of a lack of fan support or shame over a "down" year or two. The MustangFanPage is not a school sponsored or affiliated website. Also, Lipscomb doesn't have a Quarterback Club or fundraising organization specifically for football or the MustangFanPage. This website was started, and run on a volunteer basis, but lately has been without someone stepping forward to commit to the time involved.

I'm not sure what the story is on the guy who played bagpipes. I'll let someone else speak to that. Maybe "he" retired, or broke a lung or finger or such. The Mustangs still have plenty fan support and will bring a good crowd Friday night to be sure. Some of the best football games I've ever seen were between these two teams. I'm hoping Friday will be another one that makes the list.

Just curious what criteria are you using to project Maplewood going to quad 3 and Lipscomb to quad 2?

  6. If Lipscomb wins little will change for teams on the bubble. If Stratford wins (which I doubt) not only will Lipscomb be out, but the Spartans' entry will likely take a spot from a "more deserving " team.

From a Maplewood point of view, a Lispcomb win would give the Panthers second place in the district, and add another team with 50% or more wins to their resume. A Stratford win would give Stratford second in the district. Maplewood would likely get in as a lower-seeded wildcard.

Reminds me of a scene in the movie western "Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris. When Clint Eastwood's character "Will Munny" has Gene Hackman's character "Little Bill' on the floor, and ready to finish him off. Little Bill says, "I don't deserve to die this way". Will Munny tells him - "deserves got nuthin to do with it".

I kept wondering all night why Lipscomb did not give the ball more to Cooper Jackson? I think if I were coach, he would get 30 carries a game.

I believe the coaches have given him opportunities. If you look at stats, his yards-per-carry are not as good as Tigg, Glimps and other RBs on the team. They've probably found each RB's particular strengths and weaknesses by now, and use each in situations that are best.

  8. This game has potential wildcard playoff birth implications, and 3rd place in District 10 AA on the line. (Ok, if Pearl-Cohn upsets CPA, this could also impact District 10 AA standings as well.) Anyway, I would like to hear from fans of both Stratford and Lipscomb, in addition to others from the district, or who following these programs.

Both teams have found some late season momentum, and are in a position to control, or at least strongly influence their district standing and a playoff birth. How do they match up, what are your predictions and thougts on this game?

  9. I think that 5 wins gets Lipscomb or Statford in the playoffs. To get in with only 4 wins, you would have to have a strong tie breaker stength of schedule.

What has turned the Lipscomb team around this year? Are they still a run first offense?

Well there's more than one factor, but first and foremost I would say improved blocking. The blocking last year was terrible. I wouldn't call years version dominate, but they're doing a decent job of run blocking. Yes, they're still a run-first team, as the type of offense and their stats would indicate.

  10. I agree Lipscomb is playing better, and the coaching staff will certainly have them ready to play. I just think, they'll not be able to get a "W" against a very good CPA team. I know it's possible, but not likely. I know Lipscomb played a solid game against PC, but PC shot themselves in the foot, more times than I can count.

I know this is thinking ahead a bit, but "if" Lipscomb falls short against CPA. (If). Given this scenario, would Lipscomb still have a shot at the playoffs by beating Stratford, and finishing 5-5? Stratford pulled off the win against Maplewood, and I believe plays Hillsboro this week. If they can beat Hillsboro, and then beat Lipscomb (like last year), wouldn't the Spartans be in a better position for a "wild card" birth than the Mustangs? To-date the Mustangs haven't beaten a team with a winning record. If this scenario plays out the Spartans would be 5-5, with two wins against teams with winning records (Maplewood and Hillsboro).

This district is definitely down this year, but with Maplewood losing, and the playoff wild card still in play, there's some playoff slots still available, and some exciting football still to be played.
