  1. Enjoyed watching VB play this year. Basketball teams can get wins in a number of ways. They can physically dominate the other team (bigger, stronger, taller, quicker) or they can have a better strategy on how to win the game. Once the ball goes up at the state tournament, most teams are pretty even on the floor so it comes down to strategy on how to win. I do not fault BTW on how they played to beat VB. Every team should have a game plan on how to win and that was their plan...to get us out of the zone. The 3 point line has changed the game forever and a shot clock will reduce game plans from 32 minutes to 30 seconds.

  2. I agree, however, we try to teach our kids to respect their teachers/coaches and that kind of language would not be tolerated coming from a kid. Maybe we put coaches/teachers on a higher level than we should. Just seems after everything that happened at the Spencer game and now this, one has to question his integrity?? Just a thought. They play Cookeville tonight so maybe his little "pep talk" will pay off.

Teenagers shouldn't be motivated this way or led this way. Can you see a teacher motivating students to improve test scores this way.

  3. ihave nothing to do with van buren co. or warren co. i am from white co. i went to a game there last year and ther was a guy in a gorilla suit. so this isn't the first time they have dressed up. i asked a vb fan y he was dressed up in a gorilla suit and he said he had no idea. just wanted to straighten that up. now racial slurs happen all the time at vb.it's just gonna happen in a little redneck town like spencer. i have also heard racial slurs at cookeville and shelbyville b4. so it does happen. not like it used to but it does. i'm sure warren co. coach thought they wer gonna go in there and kill em. he got mad cause they wer beating them and the crowd was fired up. van buren co. boys are very good for a single a team. they may go to state this year. anyway that's my 2 cents.

Littel read nek towne you'are funie. Yert.

  4. My comment was made from the perspective of a ref. I ref and in our State meetings the State administrator has strictly told us we are not to declare a forfeit or a winner. We can call a game as in end it due to unusual cicumstances but we are not to declare a forfeit at the game. The circumstances are to be reported to TSSAA and they will decided the forfeit and the outcome. That has been our instructions for years.

Will the TSSAA declare the outcome of the game 2moro?

  5. What happened?

Guess it depends on who you talk to as to what happened but someone got a T in OT from Warren Co. and Van Buren hit both free throws. On the inbounds play a Warren Co. player got a T and the coach got off the bench and took his players to the locker room with two minutes in the game. The refs left the floor and the game was over. Other stuff took place but I guess that's for others to look into.

  6. Well road games are just road games, you win some and you lose some. However, when you get in the sub-state home court advantage is a 10 point swing to the home team, or so I think anyway. You add in travel, pressure, and the atmosphere and it's just hard on any team making the trip.

Easy now swanson, don't put a curse on your girls making the trip to Marion Co.

  7. Yes they do win on the road all the time, but this is sub-state and completely different than just a regular road game. Clay is a tough place to play anyway, so ou can't tell me a 2 hour bus ride then going to play a game where everyone is going nuts for the home team doesn't effect the team at all! There hasn't been a team from up here to win a road sub-state game in a long time and region 4a has sent some pretty good region runner up teams, not in the last few years but have in the past. So I think homecourt advantage in sub-state has a big advantage...

Thought you were talking about the trip from Chattanooga to Clay Co. only. Sorry about that. I agree that home court has a huge advantage, post season included. They have not traveled very well this year so I wouldn't expect a large following from them. However, don't discount the offensive boards and second chance shots because they will try and take the air out if it's a close game.

  8. I would say both teams about dead even talent wise. However, the difference maker will be Lookout having to travel and Clay County being able to play at home. Those will be 2 huge things that put Clay County over the top. Atmosphere is everything in these sub-state games!

Forget the travel to Celina, teams win on the road all the time. If Clay wants to beat LV you better keep them off the boards and prevent second chance shots. They crash like crazy. If Clay can win the boards, they have a great chance.

  9. anyone recall another boys game recently where this happened? i know it's happened in some girls games. Can anyone say Shot clock???

There is a gym in Monterey, TN, named after their former coach that use to do it all the time 30 years ago. I haven't heard of it happening lately, however.

  10. Congratulations to Walling and the coach of Van Buren. Great job in getting the number 1 seed for the district tournament. It sounds like you guys are the favorites to win the district. Oh yea, not picking at you or anything, but there is no such thing as a regular season district championship. Girls and Boys basketball district champions are crowned at the tournament. No plaques or trophies for being the number one seed. You got to do it in the tournament to get the hardware. Goodluck and congratulations on a good season.

That was the nicest back handed compliment I've heard in a few days.

  11. Van Buren probably has a good chance to win this district, but NO team in this district can stay within 20 of CSAS. Mark it down. You heard it here first. I am NOT a CSAS fan, but I am just calling it like I see it. CSAS WONT have a problem with any teams in district 6A.

Sometimes a little motivation is needed.

  12. ..Not real old but old enough to remember "Doom" Haynes from MSU knocking down those 12-18 footers using the glass....

Should've said "old-school" instead of old. The line has added new stragedy to the game for sure. And I like the fact that a team can use it to get back into a game quicker than working for an old-fashioned three. I'm just not a big fan of watching kids shoot 20 footers knowing that they probably would not shoot that same shot if that line was not there.

  13. I like it if you have a team that can shoot it and go after their shots when they miss...I don't like it when you have a bunch of kids that can't shoot it then make it worse by not following their shots...

I'd like to see somebody actually hit a mid-range jumper and even use the glass every now and then...

All we have now is a bunch of kids that want to jack up threes or dunk...You have a bunch of kids that can't dribble with their off-hand or shoot free throws....

It's pretty pitiful watching some teams attempt to play basketball sometimes....

Good observations. What a novel idea, practice the mid-range jumper, shooting off the glass, and ball handling. You must be old like me!

  14. Today i saw Clarkrange play for the first time. I must admit that i was impressed. Madison played a great game today, they came out ready to play and made things happen. I truly believe that if we can play tomorrow the way that we played today, we could very well give CR a run for their money. And while it may be true that Morgan Faulkner has carried the lady Mustangs this far, if Clarkrange CAN manage to stop Faulkner, we have players that are very capible of stepping up to the plate. We have great perimeter shooters, great defense, and an excellent post game which of course revolves around Faulkner. Madison has a great group of devoted fans aswell as players. GO LADY MUSTANGS! Congrats to both teams on a great season, may the beast team win!

I've seen Clarkrange play three times this year and Madison once. Gotta say Clarkrange by 25... /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  15. Does anyone know if a district team has faced another district team 5 times in one season like:

    Reg. season game 1

    Reg. season game 2

    District Championship

    Region Championship

    State Championship

This is probably more likely to happen in girls, but I was just wondering...

I'm not sure but the 97-98 Perry County team may have played Columbia Academy 5 times...

May have happened with AAA memphis teams...

Random topic I was just wanting to know...

You are right about it happening in the girls. I think it happened once last year, maybe other times as well, with Jackson Co. girls vs. Clarkrange girls. I think with Livingston girls vs. Upperman girls as well.

  16. The current girls coach has coached 9 years. He has ended his career with a winning record. They've been to the region the past 3 years (i think 3, maybe 4) & went to the 2nd round of the region a couple times. The girls have competed in a tough district with Forrest putting out excellent teams year after year.

Making the region the past three years, and the 2nd round a couple of years, is an accomplishment for the program. I would say that the program is in a better position than when the current coach started. These seniors have raised the bar and expectations for the program.

In order to take the program to the next level, the next coach needs to get the players working more often & more efficiently when they come in the gym. Cardio conditioning needs to improve. The junior high girls coach & the elementary school girls coach both get their players into the gym often & use the time efficiently. Shooting needs to improve by taking game shots @ game speed, rather than no shots / game shots @ half speed.

There needs to be a greater attention to detail. For example, I still recall in a previous year watching a practice where the girls were practicing extremely hard & learning how to get in front of the post on the top shoulder @ the foul line. They were working hard, but in general if an offensive post player has driven you to the foul line the defensive player needs to work from the low shoulder. This is let alone working on the exact footwork for getting in front of a player.

I would not assume that two family members coach the same. The two family members in the school system are the junior high girls coach & elementary school boys coach. What parts of their coaching style are the same with the current coach?

When was it announced that his career had ended?
