  1. Schools being closed doesn't have anything to do with it. I read on here where Whitwell is playing tonight. A little bird told you that "The Big Man" for Marion-Jasper wasn't going to play? Oh, that's convenient isn't it? If it was cancelled for this reason that is LAME. What kind of message would that send to the other players on the team. If what 98nationalchamps is saying is true then someone has a YELLER streak down that back. Somone find out who cancelled it and we can start calling them "YELLER STREAK" /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

A fan of a 5-8 team should never call another team with a much superior record "Yeller".

  2. I wasn't at the game, but really wasn't suprised by how relatively close it was. The word is that Spitt is extremely athletic and has been improving as a team.

Also, Sexton's first option is to usually to pass. He isn't worried about his pts., especially in a game Temple's suppossed to win.

Has the discipline improved dad? That is the only thing holding them back I would think. The talent has and will always be there.

  3. Agreed. Marion has a great team. CCS' team defense has been very very good lately in games against Grundy, Red Bank and Marion over the past week.

I promised my wife I wouldn't post here again but I had to respond there Conigliaro. Great team? Not hardly. Great teams have a purpose and that purpose is not to get beat by 25. Say a potentially good team and I would agree with you. Marion has work to do on both the attitude and the work ethic. That comes from the coaching staff but it has got to be something the players want as well. Tell you what I like this Henegar boy more and more. I can understand why all my Jasper pals are so high on him.

  4. Old Pirate says SP has a situation that can be a positive or sometimes a negative. Some folks like a middle school atmosphere and some are fine with the old school tradition of junior high and high school being housed in the same building. OP doesn't see much of a negative or positive except 6,7 & 8th grade can work together better in sports than programs where the split is 7-12 grade. The fact is most of us had the old school type situation and never thought nothing about it. Personally OP thinks some areas went to middle school systems to create room for crowded elementary and 7-12 high schools. RR, to answer you question OP really don't see anyone who could actually be identified responsible for holding kids in a program. Keep in mind SP has been limited with basketball facility problems and elementary principles in SP not advacates of developing basketball skills. OP is really not sure if that has changed recently, but will have to become a reality if SP is to become known for basketball.

Did not know they had the jhs housed in the same building. This could be a solid plus for SP because all the kids get to be around each other. Would you not think this to be the reason their football program is so great? Kids come in contact with the hs coaches every day, they get to see all those gold balls SP has won. I would think under these circumstances the basketball coach would take both in order to instill his system. I see nothing negative about this setup at all. Is their junior high program led by good coaches?

  5. I expect this matchup to be as good as the series of games in '06 when Grace made it to the state finals. I think Grace may have the edge in talent and depth, but either team could win. Should be a classic.

    What are your thoughts?

Temple by 3. Both these teams have played strong out of district schedules against larger schools. I look for both these teams to be at the Boro. I will be at Temple for this matchup.

  6. You can blame Henegar leaving on 1 pearson and thats all im gonna say about it and i know for a fact that Cody would have loved to play on the same team as terrell and juwan (sorry if misspelled)

I have watched them play various Chattanooga teams for the past 6 years and I have always thought, "What raw talent they have". I heard from some friends in Jasper that the Henegar boy was thinking about returning to South Pitt but something happened to change his mind. Wonder what that was if it were even true. OP as far as losing good talent in the lower levels whose responsibility do you think it is to hold on to them?

  7. If SP plays like they did against Soddy it will be embarrassing for the Pirates. The Pirates need to play as a team and get more physical and quit worrying about looking pretty. They have a ton of potential.

Potential is fine but there must also be direction in order to achieve success with today's athletes. I am looking forward to watching Grace and Temple play for the region title in that new gym in SP come Feb.

  8. I See Marion County Is Becoming A Good Basketball Team Got D1 Recruiters Watching You Play /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> Keep It Up Maybe You Can Still Be Playing When I Leave In March /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> I Know Its Early Though!!

    Nice win for the Warriors.

  9. The style of ball that South PItt is playing this year i just don't think whitwell has the athletes to keep up. BigJ i have been hearing that the big kid (not tucker) is done after the Marion game due to a football knee injury. Good luck to both teams in this big rivalry and enjoy being the first teams to play in that awesome new facility.

I hope this coach is adding more discipline to this new "gameplan".

  10. For once we agree on something, beating a weak team like Whitwell isn't impressive and we will see just how for real Marion is in the next couple of weeks. I hope they don't get overly cocky because even though they beat whitwell by 30+ it should have been worse and they struggled. So you were either at the Ider game or the Whitwell game if you have seen them play WITH THE FOOTBALL BOYS.. You can agree with me on this hopefully, if you were at the Ider game and they play with the intensity they did in the 4th quarter they can hang with anyone.

I was at the Dade tournament...one of the teams involved has a coach who went to school with me. I saw an unmotivated team who may get better with an infusion of better players. Now understand this I saw them 2 or 3 times in Chattanooga last year and was totally unimpressed. Too little discipline. Now I do think the Henegar boy has promise. Someone needs to jerk him up a couple of notches. Not sure their coach can.

  11. Grundy Co. has 6 k-8 schools that feed their program. They also get most of the players from Monteagle Elem. a Marion School. 7-8 grade basketball is huge here. My kid's school has 18 regular season games on this year's schedule plus 2 local tournaments. They are also likely to go to one or two state tournaments.

There's also a 5th-6th schedule for those schools with 7 Saturday's scheduled for regular games and a pre season and a post season tournament.

There are quite a few of the kids who play and start for the school's 5th-6th team as well as the varsity. Now add to that the fact that we have a big "jr. pro" type program where pre-k through 4th grade are taught the game and a smaller Upward program and you can see that the good players get a lot of work. The great thing is that a lot of other kids get the chance to play the game too even if they're not going to be high school "stars."

I've always noticed that there is little concern in Chattanooga for the girls game. The bleachers do not get full until the boys start playing. You see a little interest in places like CCS and East Ridge but not much else.

    DL.

No wonder. Chattanooga hates girls basketball and always will. Can't understand why because there has been some talent here and of course the Valley(s) have always been competitive. How will Grundy do this year Del?

  12. Somebody hasn't seen Marion play this year, especially with the football boys back.

Beating teams like Whitwell does not exactly send a "shiver" up my leg. Tell you what you play Austin East, Bolivar Central or Brainerd to within 20 and not only will I stop talking bad about the Valley but I will issue a public apology as well. BTW I have SEEN MC this year and they could not play Bolivar to within 30.

  13. This one could be one for the ages. If memory serves correctly, Coach Thacker is a former player of Coach Phillips at Marion. I think the Pirates are too athletic for the Tigers. This game could be close for a little while, but I can see SP pulling away and winning by 30+ points.

    SP and Whitwell for the Ages??????????????????? /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

  14. Cute spelling... really it is... We get on here and talk about our area like people come here and talk about their area such as Chattanooga, Knoxville, West TN, etc, but my question to you is, if you are so against the valley and want to poke fun, why are you even on here? Go talk about Red Bank and CSAS on threads that consist of them.

I do post on topics concerning those 2 teams and others in the area from time to time. Just really irks me about all this talk about D1 prospects in the Valley??????????????????? BTW I guess I am as dumb as a prize hog but I finally found the answer to your "riddle"...if memory serves me the person in question, who happens to be a good friend of mine and former rival coach, only took the job with the intention of staying in baseball a year and helping the school out because he liked the school and no one else wanted it. Very noble gesture to SPHS I think. I believe he has "sniffed" over 300 wins and 2 state appearences in another state in basketball. Care to compare his record and that of the current SP hoops coach?

  15. I didn't they let horrible players on preseason top 15 teams. You can't say it's just because he is tall either because Carter McMasters is the same height and he is playing at Liberty, not quite Tennessee's level. I agree Jurick isn't the best offensive player ever but his defense and presence is very very strong, pretty much what Pearl had to say too.

I still don't understand how a region of the state whose basketball programs are non existant gets this much attention on a thread. Guess you guys are unemployed and hanging around the library computer all day. I have an idea for you; leave the TSSAA and form your own league. Put North Jackson and the Sand Mtn teams in it since they are basketball inept as well and play for your own championship. You can play the "state" tournament of the Sequatchie Valley at the new "palace" at SP(700 seating capacity) or at Ricky Richards Arena in Skoalmont...that is the only way any of you are going to get a sniff at a championship.

  16. I played for Coach Phillips at Marion and yes he was a friendly guy and i consider him a good friend to this day but he knew where to draw the line and be serious about his job, some of the guys didn't see it the same as i do i agree with that but with the time off i think he has changed into more of a coach that is friendly instead of the friend first. If you look at the kids that quit on him, they are gone. The kids that he has now i have been around since they were 7th 8th and 9th graders and they are chomping at the bit to learn and they have a way more positive outlook on things than his previous teams. I'm not knocking the kids he had before because they just weren't use to having someone that knew what was going on and could run a structured game, Phillips can. You will see a new Pirate team this year, i promise you that.

I saw them play twice in Chattanooga last year. They, both coach and players, were not on the same page it seemed. The game I saw at Silverdale ended up in a brawl. There was no structure as I saw it nor any discipline. Now that could very well change. I have heard Phillips is a good coach and I know he had a terrific coach who was at the school in a non coaching capacity last year. Maybe he learned some things that will help him in the future. Still it is hard to get respect if you haven't already earned it. Young coach who must listen and learn from better coaches.

  17. well man its very simple that derek seagroves and kevin butner are the ones 2 talk about.....butner is the best hustler in tennessee just watch the kid and you will see...and for seagroves , he can just shoot the lights out and he is just a stud him and kevin both....and marion has not come close to franklin EVER.....

It really amazes me how a region of this state that sends no teams to sectionals, no teams to states and hasn't won a district or region title can get so much coverage...plus the coaching over there looks like junior pro. I will say that if you take away Mark, John Cherne and Kevin Templeton the coaching here in Chattanooga is not that much better.

  18. I think that the list goes this way:

    1. South Pitt - With loads of talent and some good coachinng this team might give some of the Chattanooga teams a run for their money.

    2. Sequatchie Co. - They are always ready to play and have some of the best coaching in the valley.

    3. Marion Co. - I think their spot depends on whether or not Guyear plays or not. Coach Keef always has his team prepared and has great support from the community.

    4. Whitwell - New coach and graduating five starters form last years team makes a difficult year for the Tigers. They will be one of the best working teams around if they buy into the new system.

    5. Bledsoe - Same boat as Whitwell with a new coach and new system.

    Good luck to all teams

I have always said SP was a diamond in the rough. The only problem is football has been so huge there that basketball has always got lost in the shuffle. With the old dilapidated wreck they played in it was hard for them to land quality basketball coaches. Now that new specimen of a facility they have changes that. Look for interest in this program now.

  19. Dude whats in the water up there no way Whitwell will ever stay on the court with these two teams /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Too bad there is not an "All Valley" championship. With that being said I would say Sequatchie would be most competitive simply because their coach is hands down the best in that area. SP has more ability but they have yet to discover fundamentals and team basketball. Same could be said for Marion Co. Still it matters not because the best teams and coaches reside across the timeline.
