  1. Whitt,

I didnt intend for this to be a battle of insults. My purpose was to get the answer to one question. I admire the fact you have alot of your former players back for events and such. I never questioned your bond with your former players. However just cause some young men 15 to 20 years old think that you're cool doesn't prove much.

"My players are taught to compete and to play physical within the rules. I teach them not to give up their lunch money but to give everything they have. Not to play dirty." What you're saying is that you didn't teach them to play dirty, they just did it on their own. If this is so, and you dont stand for that type of play, why did it happen over and over? Why didnt you put a stop to it? It was a well known fact among players, coaches, fans, and the officials, that the tactics your teams employed were capable of causing serious harm to an opposing player. Thats my issue with all of this. I dont have a problem with physical play. The game of basketball is very physical. But there is a difference between playing hard, tough, and physical versus dirty and wreckless. Why would you think stats mean anything to me? What would give you that idea? I didnt realize I had even mentioned numbers.

As far as my identity goes, why does it matter? And I did speak to you in the store that night. We had a small discussion, however I dont think it was the time nor the place to go into that. I could imagine what that would look like in the middle of a gas station.

  2. Coach Whittemore,

Glad to see you here. And since you seem to be open to dialogue I have a few things to get your thoughts on. First I would like to say that I dont doubt you coaching skills. I have said that you are a good coach. However what I do question is some of your methods. Since you are no longer in coaching, maybe you could explain to those who share this opinion. Why you would instruct or otherwise allow your players to intentionally try and injure opposing players? And please dont insult us anymore by saying this never happened. We both know there are many incidents that support this. And by the way, some people believe that criticism is the first step towards improvement and when used constructively, it can be a powerful tool for growth. You are one of those who believe this correct? I'm sure all the criticism you have thrown towards the officials over the years was meant to be constructive and hopefully improve an area of the game that most everyone will agree, desperately needs it.

  3. Saw Whitt and his wife in a convienence store tonight. Left in a car with temporary South Carolina plates. Ive been quiet for a long time about this subject but alot of people saw this coming years ago. A few years back I was accused of making trouble for this man, however I think he proved that I was correct on about every point. Good luck to the Volunteer program. Mr. Barnett would make an excellent choice.

  4. No one looked foolish last year. The incident with Javian will stay with this program for a while, because people like you will not be able to move on from negative gossip. I did not see you but one time on the DB Football board and talk about their negative incident and talk about it time and time and time and time and time again like you have with Volunteer. Oh yeah...... it did not involve a Volunteer or a Falcon. This season has a great group of kids that worked their butts off and deserve to be looked at with fresh eyes. New year, new kids, new season, move on and grow up. You ARE a year older. GOD Bless.

I'll agree that this years Falcons do deserve to be looked at with fresh eyes. But I came away from the Unicoi game with the impression that this years group looks no different from the past few years. I kinda lost count, but it was something like 1 technical on Coach Whitt, and 2 flagrant fouls on the team.

  5. I have been at volunteers practices before and Coach Whitt has never told the players to go after other players. If you all are talking about what happened last year at DB when Javian Shivers ran into that guy then you all need to know that that was an accident. He wasn't trying to knock that guy down. He was just trying to block the shot. So before you start saying things about Coach Whitt maybe you need to go sit at a practice and listen to what he says before you accuse him of saying things that he doesn't.

So bear hugging and wrapping both legs around the guy was just an accident? Must be a new shot blocking technique I don't yet know about.

  6. you may want to get a doctor appointment cause you truly are crazyk!!!

Thugball! I thought you were talking about getting a doctor's appointment before you played them so that when they beat up all your players or tackled them into the wall or all the other stuff they do you would already have an appointment.

Can't wait to see how they ATTACK other teams this year. And then all of their fans can say, "He doesn't teach it. He just teaches them to be aggressive."

Don't think you'll hear much from the Volunteer faithful this year. After the incidents last year most of them are afraid to say anything in defense. They are afraid of looking foolish again.

  7. chase depew is NOT a senior hes only a jr. but a great shooter

I'm interested in your definition of "great shooter". Not knocking anyone here, but I think the word great is used a bit to much. Lets make some comparisons here. Todd Halvorsen, Josh Odem, Clinton Freeman, Aaron Bennett just to name a few. Just on his own team you have Koree Deeb and Jordan Cross. All of these guys are already proven shooters.

  8. I totally agree with that statement!!!!!!!! I hate to say it??¦.but when I see a certain official line up to work our games this year I know its going to be a long night for the Vikings. He was real instrumental in the last game against East and he did all he could to take the last game with Central. He makes blatantly bad calls and looks up at our ???hagglers??? and smiles as if trying to send them (us) /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" /> a message. I hope he knows the only message he??™s sending is that he??™s not worthy of his whistle, and he??™ll probable be refereeing youth rec leagues on Saturdays next year. All of these games are recorded and while there is no replay on game night, there is on the day after the game??¦and the day after that, and the day after that??¦. I??™m thinking of putting together a highlight film for him and sending it to the TSSAA!! That should hook him and his boss up. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

Are we trying to get some calls? lol. Sad, sad, sad ,sad.

  9. I've seen Bentley a few times. Just get the young man the ball on the high post and you will either get 15 foot jump shots from him, or open threes from the wings, or layups when the defense helps up. Getting him the ball there will create alot of options and oppurtunities for his teamates to score.

  10. Why are they having these tournies at the small gyms in the conference? I know all the schools don't want the big boys hogging all the $$$ and want a cut but can't that be done by rotating a larger % of the total district cut around the conference and just have the games at more centrally located gyms that can accomodate the fans/parking? I don't think there has been much of a problem with this tournament becuase the attendance hasn't been that great. I guess they would rather get 100% of a small pie and stick it to the big guys instead of a larger portion of a much bigger pie. The way I understand the rotation it will many years between being played at the sensible venues...Viking Hall, Freedom Hall, and the Buck Van Huss Dome. South was rediculously hot and overcrowded in '06 and had people actually drove down to Volunteer this year it would have suffered the same problems...but many chose to stay home. Like I said, a solution could be to have the tourney at the larger arenas and rotate a larger chunk of the gate around the league. Say it is at Freedom Hall next year but it's Central's turn to get a bigger cut of the revenue. More people will show and they get there cut to boot. More people around the area that aren't affiliated with any of the schools are more likely to show up and buy a ticket, nachos, drink, etc to see games at Freedom Hall than drive down to Crockett (no offense). They will just stay home which is what they are doing this year. we'll see come Saturday, but I think it's ridiculous to have the tournament at a gym that can't hold 4 teams fans...when they come. Just my opinion.

You bring up a very good point for discussion. However I think a better solution would be to have it at a neutral site. King College would be a great choice, Freedom Hall another. Just as long as its not on anyone's home floor.

  11. LOL ..... You want. Yes NETFan i think you are right about Cradic. O and if you need to see it theres a photo of it on tricites sports.*wont* ^^^^^^^^^^^^ "correction"

I thought Coach Whitt taught his boys to wrap up better than that. lol Congrats to the Hilltoppers and the Patriots for advancing to the next round.

  12. There has been a lot said about the TN High/Central game and about the referees. I do not know what happened at that game, but if anyone thinks that we have the worst refs in this area, then by all means put your application in and get a striped shirt. These refs, whether you think good or bad of them, are out there instead of you. Hey! You will get in free to games and get paid to watch them and oversee the action. You may even get an all expense paid trip to one of the tournaments held during the holidays. Do refs make bad calls....yes. Do refs miss some calls...yes! BUT!!!!! They have chosen to be on the floor and YOU have chosen to be a spectator, so please do your part and spectate, not commentate. If you want that job of commentator, then please submit your applications to one of our fine radio stations, or better yet...spend the money and create your own radio station. No one comes to where you work and criticize the performance or lack there of what you do, with the execption of your boss. What if we had no referees to call games and the games got cut from our fine high school programs, then what? I will tell you that our youth will be in a lot more trouble than if they were playing sports. At least these kids are afforded the opportunity to be somewhere instead of getting into something that could ruin their lives. I know some of you guys don't give a flip unless it messes with your plans of going to games and criticizing every facet of the game, players, coaches, and refs. Maybe some of these coaches, players, refs, and AD's should come to your job and call out the performance of some of your guys' work. GOD BLESS!!!

By the way.......I do not know why the game was that important to either Central or the Vikings.....you do know that you guys will be playing each other again in about eight days right? All you guys were doing was deciding which team will wear light or dark colors when you play...nothing else. As soon as I hear about the brackets, I will post them unless someone beats me to it.

I have to say that I agree with alot of what you said here. I for one think that the officiating has been pretty good this year and want to commend the officials for taking the time to talk over calls in order to get them right. I have seen high school games in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, and Georgia just to name a few places and the officiating here is far from being the worst. With that said, I do wish that officials were more like they used to be, I think it would go a long way in how they are percieved by all. For example, why not talk to the players a little more. I can remember hearing "watch the hands", "cut out the bumping" etc. Then when you got called for something, it was usually briefly explained to you what you did and what you could do different not to get called. Players just want to know what they can and cannot do. Also, I would like to see the officials take control of the game from the very beginning. I completely agree that the players and coaches should decide the game, not the officials. However if you set the tone early, and get control early, then you're not having to restore order later in the game by calling T's and touch fouls that you haven't called all night. In defense of the refs, the game has changed alot and with todays pressure defense and fast pace style offense. You have an offensive guy pushing to get position on the block, you have a defensive guy pushing to keep his spot on the block. You have an defensive guy bumping and swatting at the ball, you have the offensive guy pushing to get some space to make a pass or to be able to put the ball on the floor. What do you call?

As far as people in the stands getting on the refs, come on, this has been going on forever. Officials have to have a tough skin and ignore it. Now I if someone is making personal or derogatory remarks, then they should be removed. But as far as telling a ref he missed that one, or to call it both ways, or the crowd booing a call, you have to not let it bother you. You can't start staring in the stands at people that are yelling. You can't start calling against a team or a certain player for it. Thats taking away the coaches and players abilty to decide the game on the floor. But again, in the defense of the officials, there have been instances of parents following refs out of the gym after the game and things getting out of hand. But thats not the players fault, don't take it out on them. And 99% of the officials don't.

As far as critisizing refs on here, is that really any worse than a coach critisizing them in the paper?

  13. Looks like things have pretty much taken shape.

    8. South vs. 9. Crockett

    1. D-B vs. winner of 8 & 9 game

    2. Science Hill vs. 7. Daniel Boone

    3. Sullivan East vs. 6. Volunteer

    4. TN High vs. 5. Central

Volunteer can overtake Central, but will need to win at East and will need need Boone to defeat Central to set up a showdown on Feb. 7th.

This is how I think the bracket will look like. Stokomo I hope will update us once everything is in concrete. How does everyone see the awards playing out?

  14. Hidden Valley has a good team, but their not "special". They are ranked 3rd in 2A in Virginia. They have one guy that has signed on at Va. Tech. (not exactly a basketball powerhouse) I could not find where they had played out of their area, no big tournments or anything like that. So one has to figure that their area must be pretty strong in basketball. But then again seems like every time this areas best basketball teams play other areas we get our butts handed to us. Its been this way every since we lost Van Huss and George Pitts.

We harped on the schedualing in football for years until finally last year they got it right. And it really helped in the end as it made the football team better. Upper east tn. has always been weak in every sport. I don't think it is as much the athlets as it is coaching. It has been well estabilished how weak upper east tn. is. If you want to know how good your coach is look at his record against teams outside this area. I bet you would be suprised.

In what order would you rank coaches in the Big 9 from top to bottom?

And who do you think is the best coach in the area?

  15. Here is something to think about. What if Central, TN High and Volunteer finish at 8-8. How will they be seeded in the District?

    4. Central via the win against Science Hill

    5. TN High Overall Record

    6. Volunteer Overall Record.

I think thats how its done. Let me know if I'm incorrect

  16. looks like Tenn High Vs Central will be a key game

    Tn High / Central

    also

Volunteer has some big games coming up. A win over South should guarantee them at least a 6th place finish. And if Tn High or Central slips up anywhere they could even move up into 5th spot.

  17. Is it not possible that one team just fouled more than the other? A team's style of play has alot to do with how many times they foul or get fouled. A team that takes the ball to the baketball will go to the line alot more than a team that looks for jumpshots. A team that plays alot of pressure defense will foul more than a team in a zone. The worst thing they ever did in high school basketball was to start keeping up with the foul count on the scoreboard. To many people, including some officials think that the foul count should be even. That piece of info on the board is not there to decide if a game was called evenly or not.

  18. Any thoughts on the last few games of the season? How will everyone finish up? With the top 3 spots a lock, other than who will finish 2nd and 3rd, alot could happen from 4th on down.

    4. Tennessee High 7-6

    @ Science Hill

    Central

    @ Crockett

    5. Central 6-6

    @ Crockett

    6. Volunteer 5-7

    South

    @ Boone

    @ East

    Central

    7. Boone 3-10

    8. South 2-11

    @ Volunteer

    D-B

    Crockettt

    9. Crockett 0-12

    Central

    @ Science Hill

    Tn High

    @ South

  19. Where's the Floor General police at now? Oh! Coach Whittemore did not coach this football game.

LOL Nice try. I'll let Brock answer this one for you.

"A guy goes for a break away layup and gets murdered and it is a no call....."

    Brock,

Do you think was because D-B is coached and plays dirty? Or was this a case of the officials missing calls and not being very consistent on what they called? Did either team come out with intent on hurting someone or was it just a case of the officials letting things get out of hand?

I think thats the difference in Volunteer and the other 8 teams in the conference. INTENT.

  20. Sniff, sniff....aaahhh! Yep...the smell of negativity at its best. I should have guessed that whenever there is a jab to be thrown, you would do the honors. I wonder though.... is that a direct jab at me or someone else? If it is at me, then you don't know my coaching resume and you surely do not know my character. Let me know which is worse..... an assumption of bad coaching techniques or some "Secret ID" spreading venom? If you have that much of a quarrel with a particular coach, then by all means express yourself to a much broader audience like the Kingsport Times-News or Johnson City Press "Letters to the Editors"....... Oh wait!!!!! /ph34r.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ph34r.gif" /> You have to give your REAL name to put an article in there. Yeah.... you should stay on here so no one will know who you really are. GOD BLESS!!!!

You danced all around that question. lol The question was not meant to question your character, from our dialogs on here I respect you for your opinions and the way you share them and for your loyalty to the Volunteer program, its players, and your fellow coaches. However, your continued defense of the style of basketball the Falcons play and for the things that Coach Whitt has said is puzzling and can only be perceived as support for it. You talk of me spreading "venom" and "hate" on this mesage board and ask the queston, "which is worse..... an assumption of bad coaching techniques or some "Secret ID" spreading venom?" I could see your point if there were no evidence supporting my views, but my opinions seem to get validated everytime the Falcons take the floor. So, considering we are past "assuming" and considering that the "venom" that is spread on the court by Volunteer is potentially life-altering, I would have to say that is worse. My motivation for posting about this was to bring light to the subject in hopes something could be done before someone got hurt. Before the season even started I said that if it was allowed to continue that eventually there would be an incident and someone could very well be hurt badly. Was I wrong there? Or did last Friday night confirm it?

  21. And we wonder why our youth are as crazy as they are. Adults are setting the example of how to treat your fellow neighbor.

Does this include what coaches are teaching their players? Or the kind of actions that coaches and parents defend?

  22. Brock....One of DB's players had an easy layup and one of our players ran down the court and inexcusably fouled the guy and it was a flagrant and ejectable foul to say the least. It was the kind of foul that could have injured a player seriously. I lost my breath when I saw it. He got ejected and Coach Whitt sent him to the locker room for the remainder of the game. No coach wants to see anyone get hurt and for those who hide behind these screen names to say that they do, you have no clue. If Whitt coaches like ART says he does, then he would not have gone out to center court, shook the guy's hand and apologized. If it happened to Morgan and he did the same thing, everyone would be talking about what a class-act by the coach, and rightfully so. So...to those who want to take shots at Whitt for this incident, let me go ahead and call you a hypocrite before-hand. Again... I totally agree that this was a classless act but by a PLAYER.... and it will handled by the coach. GOD BLESS!!!!

PS.... The Central vs. Science Hill game in my opinion was not an upset. Central is starting to click. I do not know if the game was at Central or not, but if it was, they had my vote to win. They look like the Central teams that shoot it out, up and down the floor.

PSS...ART.....I agree and hope that no one gets on here and makes an excuse or tries to rationalize what happened. It was the kind of foul that could have ruined a player's chance to play again. Thank GOD it did not!!!!! With that said....it was great to be back at "THE DOME!" I saw so many faces familiar from the past, and I'm glad Tom Taylor and Throp are doing commentary. They are the best of the best!!!!!!

In one of my first posts on this subject back in Novemeber I said that something like this was eventually going to happen. Thank God that the young man wasn't hurt. You started out defending your program by saying that Coach Whitt does not coach his players to do these type of things nor do your players do these type of things. But then you stated that he teaches his players to play like the old Detroit Pistons, aka "The Bad Boys". This type of incident would surely make them proud. This has been going on for several years now, you would think that if Coach Whitt wanted to do something about it, he already would have, and this incident would not have happened. I will agree, he did the classy thing by going out and appologizing to the player while sending his own player to the locker room. But after years of this going on I have to question why he suddenly showed some class. Could it be that the heat is on him? Anyone that has read his quotes in the paper is aware of his slow meltdown.
