  1. I believe he won it the last 2 years. Yeah, Kelly is the best player, but the fact he is on the 5th place team may hurt him with some coaches. I haven't seen the final 3, but I bet he will be a finalist for Mr. Basketball.

True, the CHS rank may cost him the MVP. In that case, Teichmann likely gets the nod.

  2. I'm dead serious NashvilleHSfanatic. Let me talk slower for you. All I said is that coaches vote on this all-district team not people like you or me, but if it were me, I would vote for Michael. That is all I'm saying, just an opinion.

By the way, I have been at 29 of the Rebels games this year. 7 games is not enough to make any judgements. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Sorry for voicing my opinion.

Philly, no need to get upset, ha. I appreciate your opinion, that is why I asked you a question. My point is this: I have seen the top teams play multiple times and I am just giving an opinion as well. We all know the coaches vote and they aren't all about points, like most fans. Young is a fine player, but Kelly is a consistently dominating player that makes every team play defense differently. 30 a night (as I said, its not all about points, but this is impossible to ignore) in this district is unreal, especially considering all the attention he receives from defenses. By the way, hasn't Kelly won the award 2 years in a row?

  3. I think we all need to remember that coaches pick these awards by voting as a group. Players, fans, or people like us don't vote on these awards. Coaches love players like my boy Michael Young. He has done his steady, gritty play now for 2 years and coaches in this district love him. Need to start talking about him as the MVP. Oh, and by the way they his team finished 1st in the district.

PhillyFanatic, are you serious? I have been to at least 7 FHS games this year and I'm not sure Young is even the best player on the Franklin team, much less the best in the district. Kelly is the clear number 1, with Teichmann a close 2nd.

Congrats to Franklin AGAIN for winning the district. Pretty amazing streak for Coach Johnson and the Rebels. Maybe next year will finally be the year somone else breaks through.

  4. I believe that the MVP is the most valuable player and not necessarily the best player. I wonder how many games Brentwood would have won without Tiechman, probably not that many. With Drew Centennial did not even win 50% of their district games. He is valuable to their team, but I do not believe that he should win MVP for the district. Carden for Independance should get votes before Kelley because without him I do not believe that his team would have a winning record. In order to be considered MVP your team should finish at least in the top 2 or 3 teams.

It has been a strange year for CHS. I really thought they would challenge for the title.....of course, they could go on a run thru the tourney, but that would be a shocker.

If MVP is to be from top tier only, then my votes would go: 1 Teichmann, 2 Haddix 2 Carden.

If record is not a factor, then my votes would go: 1 Kelly, 2 Teichmann, 3 Haddix 3 Carden.

  5. I think you need to add Evan Webb from David Lipscomb. He is just now turning it on... Best all-around athlete on the team, and best defender (needless to say dominating fource offensively). I suspect that he will get the numbers in the district and region tourneys.

Webb should take the place of which DLHS player? I know 3 players can make the team, however not sure 4 off one team will fly, even if it is a top tier team.

Top Tier Teams: CPA (3): Z.Mason, Hunter Miller, David Anderson

DL (3): Caleb Simpson, Carter Sanderson, Trevor Hunt

Hume Fogg (2): Adrian Williamson, Justin Claybrook

    MLK: Antone Christian

Bottom Tier: East Lit: Jonathan Calvin

    Ezell-Harding: Lance Capitano

    FRA: none

    Pearl Cohn: none

    MVP: 1st place: Z Mason

    2nd place: Hunter Miller

  6. Shouldn't matter what team he plays on, shouldn't matter who is a D1 recruit. It should go to who has meant the most to their team this year. Kelly gets and takes a lot of shots and yes, I know he really doesn't have a lot to go with him this year. I think the mvp will probably be teichmann simply because he is on the #1 team and the other "best" player on his team went down early in the year with a season ending injury. He has more help but he has carried them this year.

I think those are the only two real choices though.

Great points BigPoppa, however I think the MVP is considered the best player (most talented) in the league, not the most valuable for their particular team. Most valuable for their team becomes a very subjective vote and brings a player from almost every team into the discussion. I do understand your point and this debate keeps coming up every year. I do agree that Teichmann is a close 2nd in the MVP race. He is an extremely productive go-to player and the fact he is the best player on one of the top teams makes him a serious contender.

  7. Top Tier Teams:

Franklin (3): James Haddix, Michael Young, Peyton Henry

Brentwood (3): Kyle Teichmann, David Hood, Kevin Bach

Indy (2): Blake Carden, Ryan Eilermann

    Bottom Tier Teams

    Hillsboro: Arthur McMillan

    Centennial: Drew Kelley (MVP)

    Ravenwood: Richmond Watkins

    Overton: Patrick McPhail

    Hillwood: none

    Top Coaches:

    Coach King

    Coach Johnson

Great point by brentwoodking regarding my MVP choice from a lower tier team. I usually prefer that the MVP does come from a top tier team, however, this year I felt Kelly was the clear choice as Best Player in 11-AAA. To my knowledge, he is the only D1 recruit at this point. I think the other top players are going to end up at the NAIA or DII, DIII level.

  8. Top Tier Teams:

Franklin (3): James Haddix, Michael Young, Peyton Henry

Brentwood (3): Kyle Teichmann, David Hood, Kevin Bach

Indy (2): Blake Carden, Ryan Eilermann

  10. I have seen this Franklin team play a few times this year and I have come away impressed each time. Appear to be a very complete unit: Big Man, Point Guard, Shooters, Defenders, Rebounders, Deep Bench, Good Coaching and unselfish. I would rank Ensworth, Siegel, and Franklin as the top 3 teams in MidTN, and expect to see all three go deep into State tourney. I believe Gallatin, Beech, and Maplewood are in the next tier of 3, but certainly capable of beating anyone. Overall, defense is the common denominator with these teams and it makes for some intense high school basketball. Fun stuff.

Predicted Order of finish: 1. Franklin

    2. Indy

    3. Brentwood

    4. Overton

    5. Hillsboro

    6. Centennial

    7. Ravenwood

    8. Hillwood

  11. The Franklin win over Columbia tells us a couple of things. First, the Rebels are getting better. After squeaking by Independence on Tuesday, some thought the Rebels had taken a few steps back since their dominating performances down in Panama City. Secondly, a blowout win @ Hillsboro on Friday combined with a gutsy 53-48 win over 3rd ranked Columbia proves that this Franklin squad can get the job done against good competition. Most who were at the tournament in PCB tell me the competition was comparable to the Columbia team Franklin has split closely with this year. At 15-3, some continue to doubt the Rebels, but this team has not even played their best ball yet! James Haddix, has made an incredible transformation into a dominating presence in the paint. Peyton Henry is more than likely the districts best pure (PG). Throw in seniors Young, Miller-McLemore, Starnes, Glover, and Lindsey: You've got senior leadeship all the way around! District play is now full steam ahead!

  12. CPA loses tonight by 10. Ugly loss to a BA team who played harder and was shooting well. CPA acted like they didn't want to be there. CPA also had David Anderson on the bench with an injury. Thad outplayed Z Mason on both ends with less talent and more effort. Free throw line was not going well for CPA either. Go figure?

CPA's performance this year is disappointing. I saw BA play in the Ensworth tourney and was not impressed. What happened to the CPA team of last year? Didn't most of their starters return?

  13. The Good.....

FRANKLIN 3-0: Some wondered after losing Kegarise to Oak Hill how would Franklin fill the void. Your answer is Peyton Henry + an inside game. With Henry at the point, Young is getting more shots, avergaing around 15 pts a game. Also, the patience on offense has led to points in the paint. 6'8 Big man James Haddix has got to be one of the most improved players in the state. Scoring, rebounding, and getting to the free throw line are becoming nice habits that Haddix has developed. Henry has been solid at the point, pushing the ball and setting the tempo on both ends. Henry, Miller-McLemore, and Pace are nasty on the defensive end. The "three ball" from Kegarise is missed, but Franklin has done a nice job adjusting with points inside and a smothering defense.

Getting Starnes and Glover back will be NICE EARLY CHRISTMAS presents for coach Johnson and the Rebels.

OVERTON: Nice early big wins, but a disappointing performance against Lipscomb leaves some scratching their heads?

HILLSBORO: Can't bet against McMillian, he is a beast on the court.

INDEPENDENCE: Eary wins have instilled confindence. Can they carry that to district play?

HILLWOOD: Congrats to the Hilltoppers knocking off Jon Jenkins or (Station Camp) but really, just Jon Jenkins.

    The Bad..........

RAVENWOOD: How in the world do you only score 33 pts against Father Ryan?

BRENTWOOD: Blowout loss to Beech combined with a loss to AA Marshal County doesn't seem encouraging heading into Thanksgiving.

    The Ugly........

Centennial: Struggled with Stratford, let BGA hang around, and blown out by Hunters Lane. That sums the cougars up. Not to mention only 2 guys are scoring threats, Kelly and Jensen.

I have seen several games this season, but yet to see Brentwood. I had heard they would be challenging Franklin this year for the District title. Can someone give some insight into their slow start?

  14. Can you beleive this? Franklin is now #3 in the midstate! Antioch crushed them by about 40 in the pre-season! I am sure Philly-fan is hype this morning. He most likely sent out for a special order of philly cheese steaks to celebrate the "respect" he has been wishing for. I mean, can someone give these Antioch boys a game please, they have gotten bored by just pounding teams. I bet phillyfan's bunch slips up in districts, or early in regions and will miss out on playing for that "REGION-SHIP" that metro still OWNS!

    Metro,

How would you rank the Top 10?

    Thanks.

  15. David Lipscomb plays at CPA on Friday. What are your thoughts about that game? Who Wins?

This is developing into one of Nashville's best rivalries and the atmosphere will be super. As for the outcome, it will be very tough for DLHS to pick up a win over CPA.......unless Z gets into foul trouble.

    CPA by 10.

  16. All joking aside, who beats who in a summer camp game or scrimmage means nothing! When are people going to realize that? If that were the case, then Ravenwood and Centennial would be co state champions by posting their summer records!

Excellent point. Summer camps are used by coaches to determine which guys have stepped up their game and can be counted on during the regular season. A summer camp or scrimmage outcome means very little to most strong programs....except in the terms of their own talent evaluation. Wins are fine, but development is the goal. Placing importance on summer victories usually belongs to struggling programs looking for confidence builders.

State champions may be built in July, but they are rewarded in March......when the score really counts!

  17. Phillyfan, don't let these kids get to you. They're probably getting on the message boards during study hall. Personally, I'd rather beat Ravenwood then anyone else in the district or outside of the district for that matter. Let them talk smack all they want. We'll see what happens Friday.

    Go Rebels!

Calling all Middle Tennessee high school basketball fans..... I know where we should be tomorrow night: the Franklin 40 straight Rebels versus the Real Deal Raptors of Ravenwood. Something has to give. Which will it be: the STREAK or the HIGH HOPES?

    This should be fun!

  18. Franklin dominated Hillwood from start to finish. Reed Glover and Jamal Starnes both had double/doubles. Young and Kegarise didn't score much, but the Rebels still came away with an easy victory. 6'9 Post player James Haddix had a nice game with 12pts.The Rebels played about 14 deep all night, even at the start. Should be fun on Friday at Ravenwood. I see where Kelly was Centennials only offense once again, wow, not surprising!

Franklin has now won 39 District games in a row!

Does Ravenwood really have a chance to stop the streak on Friday night? I am trying to decide which MidTn game to attend. I know Ravenwood is 6-1, but I haven't had a chance to see them in action. Do they have the ability to hang with Franklin. This streak thing for Franklin is crazy.....might be the story of the year......at least until playoff time.

Franklin Coach Jay Johnson has a new name this season: Coach Jay Wooden, ha. I think Coach Harrick might appreciate that.

  19. 1. Franklin

    2. Hillsboro

    3. Centennial

    4. Ravenwood

    5. Brentwood

    6. Independence

    7. Overton

    8. Hillwood

    1. Frankin How many district games have they won in a row? I know its some crazy number.

    2. Centennial Will they be the team to stop the Franklin streak? Mark January 18 on your calendar!

    3. Overton Much improved squad that hung tough with Antioch. Can they challenge for a Top 2 spot?

    4. Hillsboro Should improve, but as of now, they don't appear to be capable of cracking the Top 3.

    5. Brentwood 6. Ravenwood 7. Independance 8. Hillwood

  20. Hey Philly, you gotta realize that MetroB only comes out of his hole during basketball season. He is no where to be seen or heard from during football or baseball seasons...especially against Williamson County teams. Gotta cut the boy some slack...this is his only time to crow. Now if the Rebels whip his boys on Thursday, he'll really be eating crow. Good luck. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

I agree. Philly, you need to lighten up on MetroB, ha. You have to admit, his Philadelphia references are somewhat amusing. Maybe your Rebels can pull out a big win on the road tomorrow night and MetroB will go into hiding for awhile. Can't wait for the post-game banter, ha.

  21. Looks to me like they must be pretty good. They beat Mt. Juliet who is picked to be in the top 3 in 9-AAA and they just knocked off Clarksville...next is Frankln..who is picked in the top 3 in their district. I guess we will know more as they season progresses but they are playing well it looks like.

Prediction: McGavock (at home) by 10 over Franklin. Should be THE GAME to attend if you are an area high school fan.

What is the top area matchup for Friday night?
