  1. Central beat Volunteer 12-1...Swung the bats really well...Don't know what they have to offer SH, though, especially pitching wise. Balls fly out of that ball park...This tourney could get CRAZY /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

  2. I can't believe this ridiculous conversation is going on when the Big 9 tourney officially starts tonight!!! Let's stick to what really matters please! BTW I think DB's pitching is being given too much credit, while Daniel Boone and THS aren't getting enough credit for their arms. these are my predictions for Round 1...

    Play-In game: Central 8, Volunteer 5

    Round 1: Science Hill 12, Central 1

    DB 3, South 2

    Daniel Boone 8, East 3

    THS 11, Crockett 2

  3. Right now SH has 1 locked. Boone has 2 locked up, unless they lose to crockett. If they lose to crockett and Tenn high wins out, THS will b the 2 seed in the tourney. If THS wins out they are a lock at 3. right now crockett and south are tied for 4 and 5, but if south could get higher w/ a good week. DB is at 6 East is 7, Central and volunteer are 8 and 9. I think it'll be SH vs. Central/Vol, Boone vs. East, THS vs. Crockett and South vs. DB in the tourney...idk how the tie breakers are looking right now so that 4-6 could change.

  4. Last night's SH/TH game was interesting. First of all McKinney didn't start. Evidently, he felt some soreness in his shoulder, and SH elected not to use him. They started Mancuso, who actually did a pretty good job until he ran out of steam. His defense also let him down by making three errors. SH fought back and got the lead in the fourth, 6-4. It stayed that way until the top of seventh.

Patterson was pitching and started over throwing and got wild. It looks to me that Mancuso and Patterson are each good for about 4 innings.

TH got a hit to start the 7th. I think another batter walked. SH got two outs, and Patterson grooved a get-over-the-plate 3-1 pitch that the kid drilled for a double that plated the runners. In the 8th, Patterson walked the bases loaded and plucked a batter to allow the winning run. Boston King gave up ground ball between first and second to score the other two runs.

The interesting part of the game was how long SH let Patterson go. In my opinion, he was really struggling. He couldn't get his breaking pitches over and he was over throwing his fast ball. When you walk a lot of batters, someone always come a long and hits a dinker that gets thrown around a couple of times. I'd rather see the opposing team hit a 580 ft. home run with nobody on, then a 30 ft. dribbler with the bases loaded that gets thrown down the right field line.

SH had plenty of chances to break the game open, but they tried playing small ball and it backfired. SH had the bases loaded in the 5th and tried to squeeze. Evidently, Mancuso missed the signal (when I played, the batter always had to acknowledge he was squeezing) and the runner was a sitting duck. I think they must teach small ball in coaching clinics, because all the coaches in this area do it.

When the season started, I thought SH was going to dominant with pitching and fielding. I thought their hitting might be their weak spot. It has been just the opposite. Their pitching and fielding has struggled, while their hitting has been strong. That's why, I think they are making a mistake playing small ball. If Mancuso had hit one in the gap, the score could have been 10-4 by the end of the inning.

I still think that SH is going to win the conference, especially if they get a first round bye. As someone stated earlier, several of the top teams are about equal when their ace is pitching. SH happens to have more aces, if everyone is healthy.

I believe the Vikes could've played better as well...Their top 3 hitters going into that game did not have a hit. People stepped up and picked them up though. They battled and showed alot of character. Looking forward to a future rematch. Two very good and exciting teams.

  5. 1/10 of a second? Don't kid yourself, this isn't the SEC or anything. There are not many ppl on earth who run 4.4 forties, or many lineman who run 5.0 forties. I am not trying to take away from Carr, he will do his thing, but the whole obsession with his speed is over hyped. There will not be many times in a game you run 40 yards straight, so the whole forty yard dash thing looks great on a resume' but you gotta apply it to games. You can win with a bruising RB who may run a 4.9 or 5.0 or a speedster, obviosuly, with each style of RB you have to have the players that fit it.

I still say Betsy in a squeaker

  6. Those should have made it. They all looked impressive at tryouts except one and he had a great season but just did not show it at the tryouts. Again, what is so hard about posting the teams.

ya i agree. There were 1 or 2 of them that didn't have the best of tryouts, but I believe that they are all in place to be in this showcase. They're all good ballplayers, and I believe the coaches knew that when they selected them.

  7. Maroonandgrey...you're a snob. Why don't you get a house in the city?

I dont get this arguement it's useless DB was the better team in 06 and I with the rest of East Tennessee( besides Db fans)beleives that South was the better team in 07. Put all this behind and move on to 08. South can't waste time thinking about the What-if game. They have a challenge this year unlike the last 3 years in their own conference /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

  8. Carr, uhhh, I mean madman, have you bettered you're times since the TC? How is Fuqua? Isn't he a senior? Will he be able to make it back this year?

50.8 at the MLC meet and the split at Furman was 49.7 but yes of course a split

Carr, uhhh, I mean madman, have you bettered you're times since the TC? How is Fuqua? Isn't he a senior? Will he be able to make it back this year?

50.8 at the MLC meet and the split at Furman was 49.7 but yes of course a split and Fuqua will be back Tuesday for Conference at North and this isnt Carr by the way /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

  9. I enjoy your posts et. I like your unbiased approach to discussion. I must say then that South's rising Senior class has ruled from Optimist on. They are not undefeated in that frame but were undoubtedly dominant...especially as Frosh. Many were Soph varsity starters. But...I don't think that is any indication of the future success of the (a) varsity. I have seen too many variables come into play between the Frosh and Senior year. Some players don't continue, some take a 3 year hiatus and only play as Seniors, some play for the first time as Seniors and some have sat the bench since the 5th grade only to bloom in their Senior year and become superstars. And of course there are those middle school All Americans that fade into mediocrety. My point? South hammered Bristol's rising Senior's when they were Frosh. BUT...it is obvious that Keenan Shephard is doing some hammering of his own now that he wasn't doing then. I think that you can get a handle on the ability of a class by following it's history but I don't think you can predict success. There are key items to look at however and that would be things such as work ethic which would relate to a particular coach. For example...CHMS hammers people on a regular basis in all sports (if you look at a 10-15 year span) but South has only been successful as of late. Why? Well coaches of course but also enviornmental issues. The city boys are not as athletically matured as the Colonial Heights boys at the middle school level. Yes, the past couple of years have that trend reversed but my point is that those same athletes become super-athletes once they get into the DB system. Many things come into play in the explanation of this issue but the gest is that you just can't tell alot by looking at history of those lower grade years. So much can happen is a short period of time that makes it very unpredictable.

The part of your thinking about Carter being in Stubb's head is spot-on. Which is, I think, THS's main issue. And that is the mental game. Because THS always has quality athletes.

South's rising senior class is tough so is Besty's... anyone could have said this 3 years ago if they was at the frosh game between the two 14-7 Besty winning but VERY VERY hard hitting game for a bunch of Freshman....South,Eliz, and THS good luck to all...Each have a chance for the title and each have the talent but its all about how each one works in the off season.

  10. Well I decided to take in the track meet at North yesterday. I didn't realize Bobby was running track. Good for Bobby! However it was evident that the Spin Dr. was faster than Bobby...something I was a bit surprised to see. First time I had seen Fletcher run the hurdles since middle school. I went to see Watterson 'cause he is supposed to be the fleet foot but got disappointed to find out he has pulled a hamstring. And to make matters worse Fuqua was bummed out also. So Fletcher won both hurdle events. Tremendous form but not quite as fast as the two cripples. Would like to see him run against the cripples if they get healed up in time. Just wanted to report on the speed thing about Bobby. And if Cassell is so fast why doesn't he run track. When I played football it was a law that you had to run track. Oh well, that was back in the legal child abuse days.

Yea Fuqua was bummed ad did you see Derek Carr he won the 100,200,and 400 the boys fast!!!!!!!!

  11. Art,

Has Chris Sensabaugh posted an open 100m or open 200m time? If he is new to track, he'll obviously need to learn about coming out of the blocks properly, but I know he will be taught properly there. I am interested in seeing what his open sprint times are, not a hand timed splits. I've seen some other fast freshman over the past few years and would like to see where Chris is now in comparison. Sounds like he may have picked up some speed from the last time I saw him running the football.

Art, if Chris will not be representing the Tribe in the 100M, 200M, or 110M Hurdles, who does, and what kind of times are they posting at this point of the season?

    Thanks

    1 Derek Carr ELIZABETHTON 51.84

    2 Chris Sensabaugh DOBYNS-BENNETT 53.93

3 Yukya Ngoy SCIENCE HILL 54.62

4 Ryan Owens SCIENCE HILL 55.13

    5 Jack Cox DOBYNS-BENNETT 59.89

6 Jordan Walker DANIEL BOONE 1:01.21

7 Chuck Harris DANIEL BOONE 1:03.89

    8 Justin Stanley ELIZABETHTON 1:04.53

Theres his 400 time at the tc invitational Carr has some speed also as a junior

  12. I cant disagree with your reasoning. Very well thought out. I do think you give Besty to much credit. I think they will be lucky to make the playoffs. It is very early for me to think about ranking anyone but I would not have Besty in the top four and would probably move Sullivan East into the 4th spot. I understand your opinion and where your heart is but I think they are still a few years away. Sorry. Being a JC fan I will give you some insight on them. They will be better in my opinion than last year. Running back will be a question mark. They have some quality backs it will be a matter of who steps up like Leonard did last year. They have two or three who were very good when they were younger but injuries and playing behind Atwood and Leonard have kept them in the shadows. JC seems to be in a cycle of always having an unknown get the tailback job because they have had some really good backs recently but most only started for a year or so. I think they will probably start out sharing the ball with 3 or 4 different guys in that position and see who gives them the best shot. They have options of small darty guys like Leonard and Atwood but also have a couple that are bigger and fairly quick that I remember seeing at JV games etc. As always staying healthy will be key. JC simply doesnt have the numbers to replace a key injury. If they stay healthy this should be their best shot to compete for the conference championship since coming into the MLC. They return 9 or 10 starters on both sides of the ball to the best of my knowledge. Looking forward to getting it started. Also, as usual JC will be small overall. Our QB will be bigger than most of the line.

  13. That's funny. Chris ran the 1st leg, dusted Betsy and was on an all Freshman 4x400 Team.

B/S too bad i ran the first leg yea Derek Carr ME finished first with a split of 53 and chris with a 55 know what your talking about..... feels like crap getting beat by a lil school like us in 4x100 4x400 dont it

  14. Here is a surprise for you. I saw Freshman Chris Sensabaugh (DB) run a 52 sec split in the 4x400 relay last week. He is not only going to challange for the Conference Title, but may the Region and the State Title. He has just started running (football then basketball). And has never ran track before.

    Let's go #32

    Roll Tribe Roll

    Elizabethton still won /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

  15. 1. Tennessee High- Way too much talent......Shepard in the back field will hurt opposing teams and they always have a good D. The only thing i see hurting this team is getting too over confident.

2.Elizabethton- Probably the best 1-2 punch of RB's around in Derek Carr and Cody Forbes. Defense wise i think they will have the best they have had in awhile cause of their speed. Coach Witten came in here for a reason and i think people will see why. Watch out for this team.

    3. Sullivan South- No Curt= a couple of loses for the Rebels. Don't count them out though very well coached and have a couple of tough minded players returning. I see the defense carrying this team more for a change.

    4. Johnson County- Still have Phipps and Prudhomme but i beleive they have finally ran out of RB's to help. They will miss Tyler Leonard more then ever. This team will be tough though because of something you can't coach and thats heart.

    5. Sullivan East- They have the chance this year to show people that last year wasnt a fluke. Can they pull a upset or two??????? I think they fall short of playoffs this year but this team is on the rise.

    6. Sullivan Central- This team will be the best they have had in awhile but not for this conference.

    7. Unicoi- They improve..... but only one game. Can they prove people wrong like in 06???

    8. Sullivan North- No weapons no wins for the year.

Player of the year- Shepard or Carr

    ATH-Prudhomme

Offense Player of the year- again Shepard or Carr

Defense palayer of the year- Phillips aka lil Curt or Cody Anderson

    /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  16. Overall, I think that the area's depth is down but

    here are a few:

    Girls

    Hannah Bowers - Science Hill

    Emma Bowers - SH

    Kayla Kuziola - SH

    Laura Loveless - Dobyns-Bennett

    Kendra Sokol - D-B

    Amanda Loughlin - D-B

    Veronica Morelock - Daniel Boone

    Boys

    Josh Vasquez - D-B

    Adrien Hill - SH

Solomon Duanah - SH (don't know if he is running)

    Andrew Price - Daniel Boone

    Spencer Frantom - Morristown West

There are a few sleepers out there that will surprise but I'll let them surprise everyone else.

As far as girls teams go, I think that as long as Science Hill has the Bowers girls, they have to be the favorites on the girls side with Dobyns-Bennett probably second. D-B's strength is their distance girls with Loveless and Sokol leading the way. I don't know if D-B will have the sprinters to offset the SH sprinters. Daniel Boone has some distance girls that could make some noise and if they can get some quality sprinters and field girls out they could be the best of the rest.

I do not see a clear cut favorite on the boys side. There are a few individuals in the various events but I just don't see anyone having the depth to be a really strong team. I think that Dobyns-Bennett would probably be the favorite with Morristown West being a choice for second.

    Come Wed and check out ole -E /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> town

  17. Hogg:

I noticed that Leslie Brown didnt play against Austin East. What's the nature of her injury and will she play saturday? EHS has had its share of injuries. Pietrowski broke a bone in her left hand in the District consolation game 10 days ago but has been able to continue her effective play in the paint.

    O BOY IS THIS GAME GOING TO BE ROWDY /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  18. I heard from several people lately about how track doesnt get enough coverage. As a news writer for the Johnson City Press i made a trip to the two teams people are talking about for the up coming season to watch practice. I first made a trip to Brainerd( last years champion)of course like always they have speed but not much depth at all. O Harris looks as good as always doing the hurdels and looks like he has gained more muscle. Didnt know much about the other people but the rest looked pretty fast and was working hard. The next trip I made was to Elizabethton. All i have to say is these guys are loaded with sprinters. From covering football around the area i knew a few of the runners like Justin Fuqua, Derek Carr, and Preston Intaro. They tole me they had a chance to run a indoor meet at ETSU this year and did very well. I also looked around and they had two different shot putters this year and both was impressing coach Presnell by throwing 48 and 49 feet respectively. With the 7 people that has already been to state these guys should be ready to make a run as the states best along with the defending champions Brainerd /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  19. Sorry Madman...I misread your OP. You were giving 'Betsy scores. I thought those were South scores. They were so close to our scores...anyway...

My post on page one gives kudos to 'Betsy in '07 by saying they will be on in '08. So yes, I do feel South, THS, and EHS will be fighting for the number one spot. I haven't been that impressed with Carr however he did put up numbers so you can't dismiss history. I feel EHS's strong point will be what South had problems with in '07 and that was their line. Big and powerful. If I'm not mistaken most of it returns. Jason Whitten just seems to get better each week. If his brother has the same mentality then we're in for a shake-up.

South is loaded thru to the Frosh...but then so is THS. 269 sees J County as a player in '08...I don't see it this time. If the Vikings incorporate the Spread this year in addition to their running scheme then I see them as top shelf. Harmon is my choice. I believe Whitten's offensive expertice (or the lack of) will tell the tale for the Cyclones. It will be a power year in the MLC.

Harmon isnt palying i dont think i have a close friend son that goes to THS and he said that he isnt playing but who knows.People have oppions but i think Carr was pretty god when he was healthy. The games he was healthy in he was pretty good HV-138 yards SS Rebels-144 yards SN-120 Unicoi-86 on 10 carries He got hurt and tore ligments in his foot over at Science Hill.I wished he would have got to play in the Johnson County Game i promise you it would have been a different story>Brooks Price ran all over them but never had the speed to break away.Ask ole coach Atwood if he was happy when he figured out that he wasnt playing haha /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> The East game limted carries cause of injury but ended up with 80 on 12 carries

  20. You are correct...almost. 'Betsy won 14-7. Fletcher had 140 yds rushing that game. He had a TD called back for holding. The THS score was 35-7...Fletcher had 177 yds rushing. The others seem about right. The DB game was 42-28 I believe. Fletcher had 201 yds rushing at J. Fred. For his Frosh year Fletcher finished with just over 1100 yds rushing in 7 games with 16 TD's. You are alluding to the Junior class being weak. They lost the Middle School Championship to Holston...Fletcher had 198 yds rushing with 3 TD's. They lost the Frosh title to 'Betsy I believe. As JV'rs they were ho hum as 6 played varsity while Fletcher sat out with a broken foot. He had a 1000 yd+ campaign his 8th, Frosh and finished with 970 this year. The numbers of the current Junior class are low and their championship rating is dimished however their company is distunguished. Jeffers, Beadle, Blanken, Kitzmiller, Thomas, Neeley, and Fletcher. You will see bonified smashmouth leadership from this group. They supported Curt with quiet dignity and respect. They will be hungry to make their own mark in '08.

I was putting Besty's Freshman scores up and i wasnt saying their junior class was weak,I was just proving that Besty has some upcoming Seniors that has been quit impresive over the years. When they was 8th graders they was expected to do nothing cause their previous 7th grade class went 1-7 but then came along Carr. They went 7-2 8th grade year beating the crap out of people.Carr had 4 200+ games and never had a game under 130.The Freshman season they took over where they left off going 6-1 and Carr only had one game under 100 yards and it was against South. The upcoming junior class is also loaded Only losing 3 games since 8th grade also. They have playmakers like Cody Forbes,Cody Anderson and Preston Intaro. This bunch will be overlooked again but i wouldnt overlook them to much this year i promise you the defense will give people heck.

  21. When I give their grade---it's this year's grade------------

Jeffers (Jr) moves from WR to QB; wished he had received more snaps this past year, but has looked good when he was there and is expected to fill that spot well. Fletcher-Jr- (MLC-1st Team) returns at running back, Bobby Taylor-SO, along with Clint Phillips-SO, Wes Williams-SO, all have oppt. to step up in the backfield. WRs---Kitzmiller (MLC-1st Team), Seth Watterson-So, Ashton Zanonit-So, will be depended on to play well. Harless, Rasnake, and Hopkins will be missed on the OL, ---Hunter Beedle-Jr-(MLC-2nd Team) and T.J.Blanken-Jr-(MLC Hon.Mention) will anchor the OL at guard and center, with Ty Garvin-So, back at TE, along with up and coming Sophs Sam Conaway, Zach Ervin, and Jake Logue.

Defensively---The linebackers are in tact with Clint Phillips-So-(MLC 1st Team OLB) and Ty Garvin-So-(MLC 1st ILB), along with Taylor Fletcher-Jr and Bobby Taylor-So--having played well during limited time. Michael Acero-OLB graduates. Chris Collins-DE and Spencer Sandidge-Corner will be missed as they graduate, as well as Houston Martin and Curt Phillips at Safety.

Charlie Columbo-JR-(MLC Hon.Mention Corner) and Caleb Kitzmiller-Jr- will lead the def.secondary with sophomores Zanoni, Watterson, Dillon Ellis, Williams--vieing for starting positions. The Def.Line graduates (Collins, Rasnake, Harless, Fisher, Hopkins). Blanken-Jr-DE-returns --but interior line will be replaced. Punter and kicker, both, return--

Jordan Willingham-led the conf. in PATs and set school record. The keys to sucess will be replacing the QB, obviously, and replacing the Off.and Def. interior line. The juniour class brings some help, as does the soph class, who won the Region I Middle School Championship, won the MLC Freshman Championship, and played big role in winning the MLC JV Championship. The Freshman have several outstanding talents that can help at running back, def.secondary, and linebacker. These Rebels have a tradition of winning and all have excellent work ethic. Looking forward to another yr of Rebel Football!!!!!!!!!!!!

The junior class didnt win the MLC Freshman Title...If i recall Elizabethton beat them in Death Valley 14-7 buddy The only other games they lost was to DB They beat Science HIll, 7-6 Tennessee high 15-12, Johnson County got kicked out of the leauge cause they had they only had 2 Freshman that didnt play up,Sullivan East 42-14,Sullivan Central 35-20,and Unicoi 35 20 and well you all 14-7 6-1 MLC FRESHMAN CHAMPS /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
