  1. Congrats to the Mustangs. I never saw that coming. Lipscomb has a great tradition and I figured they would bounce back, just not against Whites Creek and not so strong.

What alot of these schools fail to understand is the multiplier at 1.8 means basically Lipscomb's student body and their fans are about half the size of their opponents.

  2. While I recognize Lipscomb is a young team and lost alot of talent off last year's team, they just didnt look to have it vs Goodpasture Friday night. Ive watch Mac's teams for the last 10 years and this years team is the first that I recall acted like they didnt want to hit. Goodpasture, a young team too, just manhandled them from the start. With Whites Creek coming in this week, it could get worse.

  3. MTSU: Baseball stadium available for Fling

The Sunbelt Tournament ends on Saturday. Only the Championship Games of Spring Fling are played at MTSU so play them on Sunday with Monday (it is Memorial Day Weekend) as a makeup day.

If rain becomes an issue for the Sunbelt tournament the high school Championship games could be moved to Cumberland or Vanderbilt or another local college venue or even to Oakland or Riverdale or another great local high school facility.

It can be done, if you want to.

Some concerns are : how playable is the field after the Sunbelt is over. Enough Hotel rooms for Spring Fling and Sunbelt.

I still think it can be done but there are two good concerns the "powers to be" might have.

  4. hitting off the end of the bat might be caused by you trying to pull off of the ball instead of staying closed and staying on the ball in which you lose plate coverage(hence hitting the ball off of the end cap)... try to shoot everything right back at the pitcher(at least for the time being while you are struggling) and think about keeping the bat on the ball a foot past contact.(extension).. getting jammed is just late timing... work on quicker more active and aggressive hands with a loose grip....

Classic case of not keeping your hands "inside the ball". If you keep your hands in close to your body and rotate your hips, you'll keep the "fat part" of the bat over the plate longer and thus contact will be made there instead of off the handle or end. Practice keeping your hands in more in your practice swings.

  5. Carter Watson on Sunbelt team for 2009 - he wasn't even Siegels best pitcher let alone the best in district 7AAA. What a joke!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations to Josh Lee, Chris Marconcini and Nathan Forrest - GO OUTLAWS!

There are some deserving players on there and there are some who are not. I think the #1 criteria is your high school coach has to be very active in the TBCA. And FWIW, I dont have a son eligible to play on a Sunbelt team so there...

  6. In order of ranking by PG crosschecker

Unfortunately, for too many college coaches, PG Crosschecker is all they use to recruit. Of course, usually those are the coaches getting fired relatively soon too!

  7. Just wanted to clear up part of this thread - the incident with the brother of a player does not have anything to do with the David Lipscomb game - unrelated and should not be brought up on this board.

As to the sportsmanship of the David Lipscomb players - I will just say they showed how much class they DO NOT have.

I saw the entire game and didnt see anything "classless" from any player on either team. Maybe I've seen enough baseball to realize an elimination game at a state tournament is an emotional game. Did the players for Lipscomb show emotion after they won the game...Yes. They should have. Did the Dyersburg team show emotion after the lost...yes. They should have too. I think both teams respect each other after that game. I know Lipscomb's team has respect for Dyersburg and Dyersburg I'm sure has alittle more respect for Lipscomb now. But again, I dont know where this "classless" calls are coming from except maybe from some who were in the stands! JMO.

  8. Same thread over in basketball back when Humboldt and Manassas drew each other in the first round. Blind draw is the fairest way to to do it. Does it work as far as putting the "best" two teams opposite so they can meet in the finals, not everytime. But it is the best way that they have come up with.

After seeing some of the "polls" by coaches, etc., Im not sure how you could "rank" teams. Some of these teams rankings is a joke. Schedule 30 middle school teams and you'll be in the top 2 or 3 in the state.

I think the blind draw is the best. Id only prefer that the draw be made BEFORE the teams are announced ( Winner of Subsection Game 1 vs Subsection game 5 for example). This way you'd know the Friday before the state which two teams you'd be playing the winner of and it would eliminate any thoughts that the brackets get stacked for one team or the other.

  9. What happened with the catcher from DL pushing a player from Dyersburg? Did that happen?

I think the 1st baseman for Dyersburg is a good kid and did a classy thing admitting the call was correct.

Its a very emotional game when its down to the end like this. He had a tough nite at the plate and probably got frustrated with the last strike call. That shouldnt undermine the classy thing he did the day before.

Dont know what occurred with the DL players except the emotions at the end of the game but, again, it was an emotional game for everyone. Those are two good teams that played hard. Lets leave it at that.

  10. I know where Lip. is and the respect they get. I also know about the lights and why they do not have them. This started a few post up, when Thesolution said South Side/Lexington should plan their graduation around the region baseball game. This rubbed me wrong and I spoke my mind. South Side would no more do that. Then Lip would skip bacculauate to put up Lights. lol Im just not going to take what they said lying down.

I agree with Solution...school administrators should either respect the TSSAA calendar and not schedule graduation ceremonies on that Friday or change the TSSAA calendar...the TSSAA is run by school administrators for heavens sake!. Kids shouldnt be put in the situation that they have to miss one event or the other.

The issue with lights at Lipscomb isnt an issue. J SouthSide was leaving last Friday if the game didnt start at 2pm regardless if Lipscomb had lights or not.

  11. OK, what does everyone think on this game?

I like Dyer County's chances in this one. They played to a tie at the end of regulation earlier this year. I believe it was a 5-5 tie.

Bolivar should have their top pitchers ready today. Looks like they will need them based on DC's win yesterday over Goodpasture. Just a hunch, but I'm going with the upset... Bolivar in a close one!

  12. The problem - current plan favors a team with one dominant pitcher to the detriment of teams with several good pitchers.

Possible answer - the 'Limbaugh' plan (now in its 10th year or so???)

    How about this variation?

    Lets look at AAA

Odd year so odd region hosts

On Friday we do the current thing of #2s travel to #1s...

On Saturday, the losers play and then the winners play at #1 of odd region

    So this year, on Saturday,

    at Science Hill

    Morristown East vs Morristown West

    David Crockett vs Science Hill

    at Powell

    Knox Halls vs Powell

    Bearden vs Farragut

    at McMinn Co

    Soddy Daisy vs Ooltewah

    McMinn Co vs Cleveland

    at Blackman

    Lawrence Co vs Lebanon

    Coffee Co vs Blackman

    at Mt Juliet

    Dickson Co vs Beech

    Clarksville vs Mt Juliet

    at Independence

    Antioch vs McGavock

    Independence vs Overton

    at Brighton

    Brighton vs Munford

    Arlington vs Bartlett

    at Houston

    Memphis Central vs Fairley

    Houston vs Collierville

The winner of the winners game is Region Champion and makes it to the substate

The winner of the first game plays the loser of the second game on Monday at higher seed or

odd region since odd year if same seed for second spot in substate

On Thursday we repeat the process at substate level

    Each 2 travels to 1

On Friday losers and then winners play at odd region

Winner of Winners is in Spring Fling

Winner of Losers plays losers of winners at higher seed or odd region if same seed on Saturday for spot in Spring Fling.

We start spring fling on Wednesday and end on Sunday so more people can watch the games on the weekend and starter in game #1 has enough rest for championship game. (Monday is a holiday for rain date)

Sounds like a good plan to me. Im for anything that eliminates the "single game elimination" set up that currently exists in the REgion and State sectional games.

  13. Anybody got a start time for this one?

It will be either 4pm or 4:30. Lipscomb's home field doesnt have lights and they arent playing on the University field. Brentwood Academy/Pope John Paul are playing there.

  14. Most HS teams have one or two good pitchers at this point in the season. If your team has three "Hosses", this question doesnt apply to you. Most teams threw their "ace" yesterday. Do you come back with your next best pitcher Wednesday and go with the Monday starter again Friday on 3 days rest? Or do you save your "2" for Friday and take your chances winning the Region on Wednesday with a 3? Either way, you're guaranteed a Friday game for a trip to the state.

Some high school pitchers can go on 3 days rest, especially if their pitch count was below 100 Monday. But alot seem to lose that something extra they have around the 4-5th inning of the Friday game. I remember last year some real outstanding pitchers lost their Friday games late after being dominant on Monday.

I tend to lean going the the 3 on Wednesday and save my 2 for the Friday game, even though I might be on the road. That way I would have my ace for relief if I need him for a short stint. What's your thought?

  15. Page wins over Marshall Co.

Congrats to MC for a great season - always tough and talented year after year and always a serious challenge for opponents.

4 wins over MC this year shows how tough minded the young men and coaches at Page can be. Very proud of the Patriots for that achievement! The Patriots are pumped!!

Rumor has it that Page vs Spring Hill will not be tonight, but rather tomorrow at noon at the Columbia State field, which I hear is a great place to play baseball.

Please keep us posted on the time and place of the championship game. I'd like to make that one if I can.

  16. Who wins this award? In my mind's it's Kemp, Lee, Shelton, and Mookie from Overton. Any thoughts? State your case for one of these guys or someone I haven't thought of.

It should be someone from Overton..probably Harton.

  17. The swine flu is no worse than the regular flu. It was all hype. And pretty much over with now.

If so, TSSAA will just declare MBA state champions in all classes and in all events!

If Greenbriar, Jo Burns or Lawrence County had to close school for a week, it would be "tough luck" for them. No delaying the district, etc like TSSAA did for MBA.

  18. Beech split with MJ and tournament play is not a true indicator of how good a team is...

Secondly - the polls came out before Beech and MJ played

Oakland beat Beech 7-0... see my point

check out the record of the DII teams - there are only a handful who have winning records - DII Large is way down this year as is all of HS baseball in TN

I know what you mean about it "being down" but I actually think that the 2008 class in TN was very exceptional as a group. Considering the number of D-1 players along with those who were or would have been drafted very high last year was not normal for a state the population size like Tennessee. Not many years where players like Gray, Moore, Lintz etc all play in the same yr within a 40 mile radius. There were alot others I didnt mention who are playing D-1 (and I mean "playing") from within the state.

  19. It looks fine. As long as this next band isn't torrential we should be ok. The shop vacs will be out in full force.

I expect Indy or Ravenwood to win it. Franklin and Centennial could make a move if their pitching holds up (big if for both). Overton will probably not win it due to them not having alot to play for plus they seem to be struggling some now.

Brentwood is toast. They look like they want the season over with, both players and coaches. If Brentwood were smart, they'd clean house and get a completely new coach in there. JMO.
