  1. Northeast up 3 at the end of the 3rd. If they upset white station then they have to be the talk of the tournament.

White Station has gained a little momentum early in the 4th and is up by 3. Joe Jackson now has 20 points and just excited the crowd with an acrobatic move.

  2. End of 3rd Quarter: Northeast taking a 3 point lead into the 4th quarter.

I wouldn't say that Northeast was dominating White Station inside but NE is getting a lot of putbacks and Farrakhan Hall has only 5 points thus far. Both teams have a ton of turnovers.

  3. Northeast leads White Station 20-18 at the half.

It looked early on that White Station might run away with it ending the 1st quarter with a 10 point advantage 14-4. Northeast was turnover prone and could not hit their shots. In the 2nd quarter it was White Station which scored only four points and Northeast found a shooter in Purvis.

Joe Jackson seems to be having a pretty good game thus far but Northeast seems to be matching up with White Station fairly well thus far.

  4. DunkerDon,

I have never seen Bearden, but was very curious about them, given all the year-long super-hype!!!!

    -------------------------------------------------------

    1) Why do you say, "alleged...."????

    2) What were the rebounding totals for each team?

    2) What info can u provide us Mphs fans about Clarksville NE, if any?

    Hello TraderB,

I used the word alleged because I was responding to a post which said Bearden had five DI players. It turns out that he said Bearden had five DI players as something of a jestful comment based upon a post from a Bearden fan that said Bearden had five DI players. I listened to the NE game and it certainly did not sound like Bearden was stocked with five DI players nor could I imagine anyone defeating a team that had such talent. Ergo, I used the word "alleged."

If I recall correctly, the rebounding stats were 37-35 Northeast.

I don't know a thing about Northeast other than I listened to the game on the radio today. It was one of the sloppiest games in which I have ever had the misfortune of listening although the last five minutes were very good. Northeast turned the ball over quite a bit (but so did Bearden and Bearden killed themselves with four consecutive turnovers late in the game - the whole game was a turnover and foul festival as well as a "brick" barbeque). Northeast fans were saying they would match up well with Bearden's size and athleticism and those comments seemed to be accurate. Northeast seems to be one of those teams that will never give up and also seems to thrive in the 4th quarter so watch out if the game is close going into the 4th - NE pretty much dominated Bearden in the 4th quarter.

Again, a Northeast fan would be able to give you much more information about the Eagles. I just listened to one game and I think both teams played pretty sloppy. Based upon that very limited knowledge I would not pick either of them to win the next round against RE but I know nothing of RE either except the respect they have garnered on the Coach T forums.

  5. HAHA WHAT!?!?!?!?! I thought I had heard they won!!!!! WOW.... most definately White Station v. Raleigh Egypt now.

I'm going to make a bold statement and only people from Memphis and West TN will like this post. Memphis is bringing home all 3 gold balls this year. Manassas in Single A, BTW in AA, White Station or Raleigh Egypt in AAA!

Why is a White Station/Raleigh Egypt matchup one that is most definite now that Bearden is out? If you feared Bearden with it's alleged "5 DI players" then how much moreso should you fear the team that sent them home by 9?

Actually, I do think Northeast will lose the next game. I listened to the NE/Bearden game and neither one seemed very impressive at least over the airwaves in this one game. I will say this; Given all the talk about Bearden's size, Northeast outrebounded them.

  6. Before the kids at Northeast have to make a decision on whether to attend West Creek or not WC should at least hire a coach so they know who they would be playing for. Why leave Northeast if WC doesn't have a quality coach?

I agree but is it certain that Coach Cooper will be at NE next year? He had been contemplating retirement prior to this season. If he wins a Championship then he may decide to retire on top. If he has a lot of talent coming back next year then he may want to stay. Regardless of what happens to Northeast in the next day or two it seems that there will be quite a few "wait and see" type questions to be answered after the season.

  7. West Creek is supposed to take almost half of NE students and half their basketball players. I can't image those players leaving NE though.

Twins Malcolm and Martin Smith are only Sophomores for CA. They transferred from Kenwood in middle school.

Thank you. I was under the impression and perhaps erroneously so that only next year's Seniors would have a choice to attend either school whereas the Freshmen and Sophomores this year would attend wherever they were zoned.

  8. The city of Clarksville has had teams in the last 3 AAA state tournaments. Clarksville High lost in the finals in 2 OT two years ago and Champion Ridgeway escaped Clarksville High with a 1 point win in the quarters last year. This NE team kept fighting and made a great comeback as well. Go Eagles.

Clarksville has always had some great ballers but has never procured a State Championship. It is amazing that the Clarksville High team with Shawn Marion and Trenton Hassel (both NBA players now) couldn't do it. I believe Clarksville Northwest was also in the State Tournament that year as they had Marques Maybin who became Louisville's PG.

  9. Is it next year that West Creek High School will open in Clarksville? If so, do you think this will have a negative impact on Northeast's basketball program since it will be in a district next to Northeast? I would imagine it would draw students from Northeast, Kenwood and possibly Northwest. Will some of the current players be going to West Creek?

Also, what year is Malcolm Smith of Clarksville Academy? Is he a Senior?

  10. Man Icy Northeast had one offensive player and nice size. Bearden was tall just like the fans claimed but I was not impressed, especially with the coaching tactics. I'm quite sure they're solid but they look almost like Craigmont from Memphis

The radio announcer stated late in the game that NE leading scorer for the year only had 5 points in the game up to that point.

  11. Congrats to Justin Blake for siging with Austin Peay along with Clarksville-area stand out Tyrone Caldwell and possibly all-state player Rayshawn Walker coming, the Peay looks to make another trip to the dance

Austin Peay lost three starters from this past year's team; Todd Babbington (G), Derek Wright (PG), and Fernandez Lockett (F). Coach Loos has some great talent coming into the program and Justin Blake is certainly talented. The position which will be most open, it seems to me, is at PG. I think Drake Reed (F), Kyle Duncan(G/F), Earnest Fields(F) and Wes Channels(G) are already a solid bet for four of the starting positions. A PG is what will be up for grabs unless Loos wants to go with a bigger lineup in which Duran Roberson or John Fraley will join those four. If he goes with a three guard lineup then Caleb Brown has some experience but Caldwell or Blake could get the nod. Loos could move Channels to PG and use Blake in the #2 slot. Of course, there are some other really good players coming in as well.

I am really intrigued with all the possibilities at Loos' disposal next year. I certainly think Blake will most definitely get to see playing time next year and I also think he will definitely be a starter at some point early in his collegient career. If all these talented Frosh coming in work hard, learn the offensive and defensive schemes, and adjust to the college game then all could see considerable PT next year (I think a few will be redshirted though). Many in the Gov Nation are already thinking next year's team will be better than this year's team.

  12. In the first day of the tournament it seems like some teams are having trouble finding the hoop.

    UC shoots terrible

DC didn't seem to shoot well

    Manassas put up 55 pts

Are kids that normally make shots missing bad?

What are peoples thoughts? I have always thought teams should get an chance to shoot in the gym before they play.

Like others have already stated, shooting in an arena with its open background as opposed to shooting in a gymnasium with a wall close to the basket can cause normally good shooters to have a poorer shooting performance. This is because the depth perception is completely different. I do think that teams who have access and/or experience in arena settings at least have the advantage of knowing what to expect. Clarksville High had their pre-State practices at Austin Peay's Dave Aaron Arena and they shot the three ball pretty well in the first half. The poor shooting second half can be attributed mainly to Ridgeway's increase in defensive intensity than to playing in an arena.

I also think that if you have two teams playing in the State at the Murph where Team A got there with perimeter shooting and Team B got there with a strong inside game then Team B would have the decided advantage in an arena setting. I think Team B has the upper hand in being able to successfully execute their normal offense.

  13. Thanks for the updates, DunkerDon.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow. That must have been ONE exciting game! Great win for Ridgeway. Heartbreaker for Clarksville!

Ridgeway seems to have pulled out another gritty, comeback victory! Great win, but RW seems to love living life on the edge. They seem to have this uncanny knack for falling behind early in big ballgames, then come storming back in the end.

This goes all the way back to their comeback victory over Raleigh-Egypt, way back in December. They overcame a 12-14 pt deficit to Manassas, also in December, to pull out a narrow 6pt victory. Lastly, White Station got up double-digits on RW back in the Regional Finals. RW stormed back to eek out a 78-74 OT victory!

Ridgeway's comeback victory tonight over Clarksville (and the other key victories, listed above) could be looked at as a positive OR negative, depending on your interpretation:

    A) Heart of a Champion --Championship caliber teams find a way to overcome adversity (e.g. deficits). They don't wither under pressure. They never give up. They never stop believing that they can win. They dig deep down and find a way to win. On the other hand...

B.) Play poorly in big ball games -- If this is the case, Ridgeway had better get out the gate a whole lot quicker vs. Seigal. Otherwise, that nasty big-game habit of falling behind could very well cause RW to get sent home packing!

As a Memphian, I HOPE that the answer is 'A." I HOPE!

    We shall see...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Congratulations Ridgeway. Great season Clarksville.

Thank you, TraderB. Ridgeway turned the tables on Clarksville at about the middle of the 3rd quarter. Clarksville gained a 13 point advantage playing a good solid defense and capitalizing on Ridgeway turnovers. In the second half, Ridgeway increased their defensive pressure and the tempo of the game. Clarksville turned the ball over and were missing what few open looks they could manage to get. Clarksville scored only one basket in the 4th quarter and that was a last second three ball.

I agree that Ridgeway cannot afford to get behind against Seigal. I listened to the Seigal game against Antioch and they seem to have a very solid and well disciplined team. A habit of having to come from behind will eventually come back to bite.

Yes, Clarksville had a good season especially since they lost some key players from last year's team. This is Tyrone Caldwell's Senior season so next year he will suit up for the Governors of Austin Peay along former Ridgeway players Earnst Fields, Wes Channels, and Caleb Brown. All three former Ridgeway players just mentioned currently play key roles off the bench but all three should be starters next year. Channels and Fields especially have seen a lot of playing time this year and Fields really blossomed late in the season.

  14. Seigal will play Ridgeway in the semi-Finals of AAA

    Clarksville - 50

    Ridgeway - 51

Sounded like Cats wilted under the Ridgeway pressure. Congrats to the Roadrunners. Fantastic game!

In the battle of AAA Mr. Basketball Finalists; Tyrone Caldwell of Clarksville with 19 pts and Jason Jones of Ridgeway with 9 pts. Both are great ballers in the State of Tennessee. This was a clash of Titans where the Roadrunners avenged their loss to the Cats in last years Quarter finals.

  15. Halftime

    Clarksville - 33

    Ridgeway - 21

Clarksville gained an 11 point advantage. Ridgeway cuts the lead to 8 but Clarksville's Caldwell scores on a putback then Reed Harper scores in the last seconds on a Ridgeway turnover.

Ridgeway has the explosiveness to get back in this game quickly with players like Jason Jones. Clarksville's defense has been a problem for the Roadrunners and the Wildcats are rebounding surprisingly well against the much bigger Ridgeway team.

Baggett, Barnes and Caldwell all scoring well for the Cats.
