Big mistake to drop McMinn. Huge revenue for both programs and it is a non region game. If they are scared of McMinn just come out and say it. I do not know who coach talked to but almost every Central fan I have talked to was against dropping the game. Central replaced McMinn with a cupcake in Seymour. That might be good for a win but it won't help the team playing weak competition. There are a lot of areas Central needs to improve in but most with the defense which was pitiful.

Such a tired statement.  I don't think anyone is scared, but going and taking a high scoring loss every season is tough, especially week one.  Coaches are trying to get player buy in and it takes weeks to recover.  Cupcake, McMinn played 3 teams in Centrals region.  Probably didn't help there team playing smaller schools either.  As I stated, a black and blue game imo is the best option.  Really McMinn has the most to lose if they are defeated in this game.

Central won in 72,73, 74, 88 and 2014 with a forfeit win in 81.  Bottom line is taking a beating all in the name of money has gotten old and that ship has sailed.  McMinn is rebelling and not playing Central in any sport starting in 23. Funny  though, they will still play Meigs in everything but football.

I like the idea of the Black and Blue scrimmage.  Charge $5 and split gate 50/50 sell some hot dogs and burgers and let that help both programs.

It is year 1. Wins will come. A successful program is more than winning games. Bringing a drug ridden community together, creating a family focused environment and growing young men are far more important. Like I said, the wins will come but the buy in is there from the kids and community. I love seeing all the extra events that included family in the program. These kids benefited from Coach teaching life lessons and respect.

I agree with this statement for high school.  Sometimes successful coaching at this level is not winning on the field, but teaching kids hard work, community, and life lessons are far more important.  Rural schools will always cycle.  Just because a coach has a winning record, in high school, doesn't neccesarliy mean he is the best coach, and sometimes it does.  What I am trying to say is, in high school, it takes a community.  Alcoa and Maryville benifit from strong community involved feeder programs where those people work with the schools to run the schemes and such.  Small rural communities have to come together and try to be the solution, instead of blaming a one or two year head coach for a program not seeing success.

Honestly this is a good post.  Sweetwaters Coach is a wonderful man and they do have really good athletes.  This Sweetwater bunch is an up and down team.  They have the athletes to hang with Giles, but will Coaching be the difference.  Loudon staff is a phenominal coaching staff, and correctly stated, they are a little down this year.  Keep this in mind, Sweetwater handled Loudon with relative ease.

Alcoa, is a whole different story.  Being from the east, Alcoa is always your state championship game.

I say this will be a good game early, but I give the edge to Giles.

Had to comment to clear things up.  Martin is a good coach!!!

This game will be the first big test from a 3A team for Giles County since Alcoa last year.

Loudon was extremely well coached — maybe the best 3A coaching staff I've seen outside of Alcoa and Giles —  but their talent was down (obviously) from last year. And it showed.

Giles had three turnovers and still won 21-0.

Sweetwater should be a much more talented team, but will they win the coaching battle?

If Giles County cleans up their offensive mistakes from last week, I think it will be close early and we see another one of those second-half surges from GCHS and they win by 10+.

If they don't clean it up? Buckle up.

Sequatchie isn't on the same level as Sweetwater, but if Central plays on the same level offensively like they did last Friday they have a chance if Sweetwater isn't firing on all cylinders.  Those are a lot of "ifs".

I agree, Sweetwater should win, but Central has a punchers chance.  I would stack the box and take my chances.

If you did Top 3 Teams of Each Region, you would eliminate 14 (3 wins or less teams from playoffs)

If you did Top 2 Teams of Each Region, you would eliminate 22 (3 wins or less teams from playoffs).
There would only be 2 teams in the playoffs with 4 wins or less. 99% of teams would have 5 wins or more.

You could take top 2 then have an at large based on strength of schedule.

Glad to know I am old enough to be a parent on this thread - yes that is the way it was in AL, and yes, season ended with an 8 - 2 and 9 - 1 record.

I have no problem with the top 3 teams from each region.  Sometimes the opposite regions are just that much better.

  9. I have a friend that coaches in Michigan.  It is wild there.  Teams have to qualify for the playoffs based off their body of work.  One year you might be in the 2A playoff, next 3A, or 4A.  It's crazy.  I'm assuming local commities set it up.  I would be cool with this, but classsifications would stay the same for me.  Make a 4 Quad scenerio made up of 8 teams. In the east there would be 2 Quads, 2 Middle Quads, and 2 West Quads.  Sometimes a 5-5 team is better than a 7-3 team in a different region.

With the exception of Polk County Central  may  have played their best game of the year in the loss to Sweetwater.  With the lead on the first drive of  the second half an illegal procedure penalty on fourth down, which was converted, turned the entire game. First and ten went to fourth and six and a missed field goal. Sweetwater took over from there.  If Central plays against Sequatchie like they did against Sweetwater and Polk I like their chances. If the Central that played against Loudon and Rockwood shows up its gonna be  a long drive home.  The question is will the kids play with the same intensity they had at Sweetwater or will they let that game beat them twice?

Another factor is the amount of seniors on this years team.  One can say what you want, but that matters when dealing with a closely matched game.  Central can cause trouble for teams, but for the most part, they give more trouble to themselves.  I've been pretty spot on this year with wins and losses, but I feel like this is a winnable game for the Chargers.
