  1. Have several friends in Milan. Went to college and was a frat brother with one of coach Tucker's sons. Met him around 1983. Heard lots of "John W.Tucker" stories down through the years. Great coach. If he hadn't been thrown in with Brentwood Academy for so many years, there is no telling how many state titles he would have won.

Coach Tucker had been sick for a few years. Great coach. There will never be another like him..

  2. Didn't you guys go 8-3 last season? How are things so bad?

No discipline. WEAK, WEAK, schedule...The kids run the candy store. It's not like it was when Counce was here. You had no problem knowing "WHO THE TALL HOG AT THE TROUGH WAS"... 8-) when he was there. Players talking back to coaches, no discipline, stuff you WOULD NEVER HEAR about from a James Counce coached team. Like him, don't like him, he was THE BEST FOOTBALL COACH DYERSBURG HIGH SCHOOL EVER HAD.

  3. He is an excellent football coach, and so his son. We are lucky to have both. Hopefully he sticks around for a good while longer. Still a lot of talent in the pipeline. If he does retire sooner than we hope, I wouldn't mind "junior" getting an opportunity of his own... Wasn't that "originally" the plan at Dyersburg?

Don't really know WHAT the plan was...I know we lost a GREAT football coach in Counce Sr. and possibly the best strength and conditioning coach in the state in Counce Jr. Dyersburg football has became a joke since he left. Lots of kids going to Dyer County, who I think got better with the hire of asst. coach Barry Kendall. But as long as Counce Sr. wants to coach you guys will be really good. He's one of those old school coaches who makes kids want to run through a brick wall for him. And he's got the athletes up there that can do it too. 8-)

  4. Saw Coach Counce down in Dyersburg the first of the year and congratulated him on his state title. Talked with him about his team and he said "HE HAD SOME TALENT" coming up from the freshman team that would be sophmores this fall. Long as He and "JUNIOR" are there, his teams will be tough. You know what you are getting when you play a James Counce team. Nothing fancy, just line up and hit you in the mouth. Sort of like those Nebraska teams of the 90's that were so great. He did wonders with what he had at Dyersburg. With all that talent he has at HC, If he stays in coaching within 3 years he could have another state title. The guy is a great coach IMO.

  5. Just a quick shout out to former Patriot QB Calvin McNairl, who will be playing in the HBCU all star game in Atlanta tomorrow. Excellent accomplishments both on and off the field, as he will also be graduating college this semester. It's been fun following his college career, and best of luck in whatever his future holds. :thumb:

Where did McNairl end up? Was it Tennessee State?

  6. If that's the case then Henry County brought approximately 6000 fans. That's just an incredibly insane number for a school that far away.

You'd be surprised at the number of fans who came from Dyersburg to follow Henry County. Coach Counce and Counce Jr. have a lot of friends and fans down here who wanted them to win a State title.

  7. My thoughts on the game

Powells kicking game absolutely kills them...When you get the ball at the 40 to start a drive its gonna

Henry County won the game and in my onion deserved it they are a far better coached team and more disciplined. They where conditioned and made the right adjustments. HC should be good for next year and will probably have the same outcome.

Mobley is used to running 15 times a game and has not played a full game but twice this year if i remember correctly. He hits that 22-25 mark and he was gassed. Not his fault when you get there and your up so much you take your players out. Still when he is relied on that much he was worn out..That one break away play in the 4th he should have had a td but completely ran out of steam. I figured that conditioning nwould get them at some point and ultimately it did.

The play calling was horrible. HC could not stop powell when they went to then left..And they continued to throw the ball and run middle/right even with it not working...

Great season for both teams powell played awesome...Darion Logan is a great player this whole senor class was awesome.

You aren't going to find teams that are in better shape in the fourth quarter than a James Counce coached team. Counce Jr. is probably the best strength and conditioning coach in the state as well as a great offensive line coach. You know what you are getting when you face a James Counce coached team. Where ever he has been, it's been the same thing: Nothing Fancy. Just line up and run the ball down your throat. Sort of like the old Nebraska teams of Tom Osborne. Just Mano Y Mano football. With three middle schools all feeding that one high school, he'll have a lot of talent to work with up there. More than he ever had at Dyersburg. He always did a remarkable job here. He basically took "LEMONS AND MADE LEMONADE". Up there he has a buffet of talent to work with. Congratulations on getting the Gold Ball.

  8. I know Jelks and Counce are being recruited as well as #7 Ray. I would imagine #34 Allen is being recruited, but word is back here in Dyersburg Counce has 9 Division 1 prospects. I understand Jelks/Coune and #7 might play at a smaller D-1 School or play as a DB....But who else is being heavily recruited for Henry County?..Jelks/Counce/ Ray/Allen are the ones who stood out the most the other night. Seems like all of Henry County's team was just GOOD. And I mean that in a positive way. Who else is being recruited? Speak up Henry County fans!

  9. #10 Caleb Counce is being recruited. A little bird told me he will end up at Vandy with the left tackle.

From what I've read Vandy is trying to get him in. Aren't he and Jelks best friends? Gotta to think about it, kid's dad was playing College football at MTSU when he was a baby, Granddad is a coach, so he's been around football all his life so he's got a HIGH football IQ. He played a heckuva game at FB against Ridgeway, scoring two tds, plays DE/LB and if my eyes didn't play tricks on me he was LONG SNAPPING Friday night. A great long snapper is worth a scholarship alone when it comes to finding a good one. Former Henry County AA John Hudson who played at Auburn won a Super Bowl ring with the Ravens by long snapping. Whatever College coach that get's his foot in the door at that program will get well coached kids who are fundamentally sound and no strangers to hard work. Like him, don't like him it doesn't matter, James Counce is one the best high school football coaches around. His teams will be prepared and I guarantee his team will be in better shape than yours during the four quarter. James Counce Jr is probably one of the best strength/conditioning coaches in TSSAA. Not going to beat his teams in the weight room either. If he isn't Duck/Goose hunting Counce is thinking football 365 days a year. That's what it takes. He was the best coach Dyersburg ever had, he just didn't have the TALENT he has at Henry County. I can see them going far every year he is there. I don't personally know the kid but you can see where he would benefit some college program. I can imagine he would be like having an extra coach on the field.

  10. Sounds like Ridgeway got some breaks but couldn't capitalize on all of them. I'm also getting a sentiment that Ridgeway was "out-coached". I hate when Memphis City School teams get that rap. <_< Players have to make plays at the end of the day is what I say. Anyways, I'll take my crow Fried with a side of honey mustard LOL! It's so much easier to take since WHITEHAVEN Won! 8-)

Good luck the rest of the way Henry Co. :thumb:

Ridgeway's coaching staff made defensive adjustments at halftime. As has been mentioned before the running game was shut down for Henry County. But with the game 21-7, Ridgeway went to work running #3 Walton. They had the ball on the 10 yard line and instead of "DANCING WITH THE GIRL WHO BROUGHT YOU TO THE DANCE" The threw 4 straight times. And none where completed. Henry County's pass rush was relentless, and Golden spent most of the night running for his life, at 6'5" and 210 he was harassed and didn't complete a lot of passes. He seemed to be rattled by the Henry County pressure. #1 Dawson got "LIT UP" in the first quarter right in front of us and he didn't lay out for another pass the rest of the night. When Ridgeway started throwing inside the 10, it put me in mind of Memphis Mitchell against Knoxville Catholic a few years ago...The Gibson kid was gashing Catholic and when they got in scoring range the coaching staff got "CUTE" and got away from the run and started trying to pass. Ridgeway's #64 and #89 looked like two SEC commits in the 2nd half. It was a great game that went down to the wire. Enjoyed it very much. As I posted earlier I can see why Andrew Jelks was wanted by everyone in the county. He looks skinny at 265. I can see him weighing 320 and being a Pro-type left tackle at the next level. That left side of the Henry County line was blowing holes open in the first half that you could drive a Mack truck through. Lot of D-1 talent on that field last night.

  11. what broke there back was the fumble on the kickoff after the field goal

The FG kicker from Henry County just BARELY squeaked it over the crossbar. Thought it still going down to the wire but when Ridgeway fumbled the kickoff...That was all she wrote. Lots of great athletes on the field for both sides. Hard hitting game too. Henry County laid the wood to #1 Dawson and he didn't want to stretch out for any more passes after the first quarter. #3 Walton who is going to Ole Miss has a lot of heart to go with his speed. That one run that he made that got the ball down inside the 5 was nothing but pure determination. Great game.

  12. Typical James Counce coached team. Fundamentally sound. #50 Jelks is a MAN among boys. I can see why ever school in the country wants him. Caleb Counce had a great game. Ridgeway's OC called some boneheaded plays in the game though. The third quarter when #3 Walton had ran the ball down to the HC 10 yard line, they get away from what got them there and start throwing. Couldn't believe it. The Henry County defense had him gun shy and he had happy feet, and I couldn't believe they kept trying to run up the middle of Henry County's defense. #7 The quarterback for Henry County would have scored on a few of the quarterback keepers against any other team. Ridgeway had a lot of speed on the field. Still a typical James Counce coached team, nothing fancy just line up and play smash mouth football. Jelks is a man. If the kid doesn't get hurt I can see him being an all SEC type player at Vandy. He's a great player.

  13. I agree with u sir Brownsville was that good back in the 50's and 60's darn near unbeatable! There were some good teams in the Big Ten back then to! But the Tomcats made them look average! If they have had Classification back in the day i promise Brownsville would have their share of Gold Balls! It wasn't many times they didn't win the Big Ten Championship! Yes they were that good! :thumb:

Rufus Lassiter had some great teams in the 70's and 80's..They didn't rebuild...They always reloaded..

  14. I've heard Kevin Ward's name as well so that makes it 3 out of 3 fellas :thumb:

I was told by some fans at the TCA/Humboldt game that they thought they would lose their head coach to Crockett County...They seem to have a really good coaching staff at TCA.

  15. Lake Co. has some big lineman...fast backs...they have a WR who can run very fast and make some great catches...they have QB who does what he has to do to win.

They dont play the greatest defense in the world....but dont overlook this Falcon team.

Sounds like a typical Lake County team to me! :thumb:

  16. I have seen Dyer County play 3 times in person this year and one time on tape. Like more and more West Tennessee teams, the Choctaws have gone to the spread--in fact, they probably went there first, several years ago. Here is what I see in Dyer County:

    1. No team discipline, which of course becomes the kiss of death.

    2. Medford averages 8 + yards a game BECAUSE he only geta few carries. Teams defend Dyer County with 6 in the box.

If Medford were in the back of an I formation, he would average closer to 4.0 yards a carry. He is a good back--an excellent back, in f

act--but to suggest that he is the best back in West Tennessee is absurd.

    3. Dye is not an outstanding spread QB. His completion % is too low. Spread QBs are supposed to aveage more than 60% completions and are supposed to be able to run the ball. Dye is erratic and has likely reached his peak.

    4. Dyer Couny has no defense--against either the run or pass.

    5. Finally, on the question of what Dyer County players would do if they had Ward or Comer at the helm, most would be in the study hall, having quit football because they were having to do real, strenuous practices, or because of insubordination.

Northside will beat Dyer County handily. They are well coached, and Craig is a far better spread QB than Dye. Beware the second half.

    (Wallace Milam)

    1. Agree 100%

    2. Might have been a stretch to say he was the best but he's put up some pretty good numbers and from what I've seen and heard is a great kid..I know he seems to go all out the few times I've seen him play..I know he saved a touchdown when Dye threw a pick right before halftime against Munford and he ran the kid down and caught him on about the one as time expired.."He never gave up on the play".

    3.Not gonna knock the kid.

4.Defense spends a lot of time on the field. Good running game would give the defense time to rest up.

5.Not gonna knock the kids again..But I believe a coach like Comer or Ward would command respect and it wouldn't take long for them to buy into it.. If some couldn't take it..then so be it..

I too will always pulled for Dyersburg when they played Dyer County it's my alma mater.. If Dyer County wins then, that's great, have lots of friends with kids on the team.. Just don't see them ever going far with Renshaw at the helm.

  17. Who CONTROLS which team shows up? Who are you comparing Renshaw to? The man's team just beat a team that most folks, including me, thought would put them out. Are you saying Dyer County has the talent on the team to win the state, if not how far SHOULD they go? Do they have the talent to beat Northside? I look forward to your answers. You are obviously the football guru of Dyersburg/Dyer County and I need your help with my picks. Please let me just have a small glimpse into your brilliant football mind.

The coach controls what team shows up! You can have an off night..But this team is TOO INCONSISTENT...You got more talent up there than ever..The best talent in Dyer County, about 5 kids from Lake County, A great quarterback, probably the best running back in West Tn in Medford, Wr's that can catch and run, depth/size on the offensive and defensive line, and the team is like a "YO-YO" Up and down..All goes back to the head coach, "YOU GOTTA HAVE SOMEBODY THESE KIDS WILL RUN THROUGH A BRICK WALL FOR"..What do you think they would do with somebody like Comer, Kevin Ward or Vowell at the helm?..Think about it. Gonna be more talent than ever there in the next season or two..What's gonna happen?.. :bored:
