  1. You were 11 for 12. there were 16 games total. I was 15 of 16... I missed Mt. Juliet... Rossview was #1 by the win loss ration and and MJ was #5 in that district... That is proof that you can make a very good educated guess by looking at what they did in the regular season, but if you go bay that Cocke County should have never made it the final 32.... so number alone can't factor in the heart of those boys who take the field on game day! As a coach you compile those season numbers and stats for you team in order to make the best decision at game time....but you have to also be able to feel whats going on in a game and know which kids can better handle the pressure...which ones you can leave in longer because they can shake off a bad play and which ones will blow apart after a bad play. So many things a coach has to monitor during the game....it's always a lot more then just numbers and statistics.
  2. Science Hill is home. This game only decides which bracket to move to for Friday's game. on Friday DB will either face Wm Blount or South Doyle and Science Hill will face Wm Blount or South Doyle. Both equally tough teams to face in an elimination game! The winner Wednesday will earn the right to play through on the Region 1,3,6,7 side of the bracket while the Loser Wednesday will move to the region 2,4,5,8 side....I think that might make a difference in the long run...but of course we have to win Friday in order to play Monday... so best I can figure Wednesday is not that important of a game if you wind up in Friday's game with the wrong pitchers your facing a more eminent danger of staying home instead of traveling to Murfreesboro. I personally thing both games are very important, but Fridays game has got to get the edge because it is critical.
  3. Shazammmmmmmmmmmm Just like at Burger King... (if you ask for it, you get it!) but once again your wrong braves4life... we don't start trouble on our own thread, we just try to stop it once others start flapping their jaws!
  4. Before Monday Nights games I printed a bracket and penciled in who I thought would win... of the 16 games played I got 15 correct ... and missed one. I have predictions penciled in for all but one game for Wednesday... just call me superstitious! ***wink For Friday's elimination games I think I can call about half of them but the rest will be too close to call... from that point on the game will go to the team most focused and in control of their pitches in my opinion. The air is electrifying isn't it. I can't even imagine the excitement these young men are trying to contain in order to stay calm enough to play.
  5. Could be that we've entered an new phase in our relationships plowboy.
  6. Morristown west gave us a fantastic game. It was a close game still tied at 1-1 in the 4th. Bats came alive for DB in 5th where our guys scored the deciding 3 runs off of 3 hits and one error.... Bo Burton helped his own cause in the top of the 7th when he let fly a 1 out homerun over the right field fence to put the exclaimation point on the game. Burton had only 5 strikeouts but managed to scatter the 4 hits sparingly over all 7 innings. That game belonged to either team the entire way as most games do, but DB began pulling away in the 5th inning to make it more difficult for Morristown West. If DB will continue to focus on 1 game at a time (one inning at a time for that matter) and not look ahead or back "they could go all the way".... That sounded good...somebody should coin that phrase and us it again don;t you think??? ***wink Great game Morristown, you have classy fans and a classy team.
  7. TSSAA.ORG has such a bracket for everybody playing this week and next....softball, baseball, soccer...etc... ADDED: here is a nice printable bracket .....they are a little slow in updating it, but if you print it you can update it manually http://www.chattanoogansports.com/brackets...etournament.pdf
  8. Fantastic job Mustangs. Keep it alive guys, we're cheering you own from these mountains while you guys get it done in the rolling hills!
  9. These 4 teams are so evenly matched that I would not beat a wooden nickle on which one emerges to the top! Exciting games going on now. No weak teams left. What a wonderful time of the year to be a baseball player. Congratulations to all you guys that are going home tonight, You worked hard to get here and I am proud of the effort you put into your season to help you team make it this far. All you guys are the very best in my eyes. Morristown West was so classy tonight. Umpires were at their best and one questionable call down at first....he did the right thing and asked the plate umpire if he say a tag in time....he had bad angle.... I had good angle and the boy was out by 2 steps (my own team) we applauded him for looking to his plate umpire to help him get the call right! That is a good umpire...not afraid to say I missed it I need help from other angles. I did not hear a single negative word from anywhere in those stands the entire night....Fantastic game folks.
  10. ...ahhhhh so in OBR rules the ball is not dead on a balk but in the FED rules it is! That leads me to beleive these famous myths are based on OBR rules.
  11. Shew and a good topic that would be fanofthe mound. Negative people bring out the worst in me. Life is to short to dwell on the what if's. There are so many great kids playing sports and all the news people will repor ton are the rotton apples that crop up each year. Why not tell about the honor student, with high ACT scores, heading to a great college on an academic scholarship, and OH BY THE WAY he plays baseball for your local high school team! "Hats off to the hero's in high school sports" might be a goo dname for that column in the paper!
  12. Yeah, so I gave you partial credit for being right... you just didn't get the bonus points for being witty!!! But you know I luv ya anyways!
  13. Riverdaleman my dear friend... you missed a golden opportunity. You did bring up the "tie goes to the runner" myth but your answer was not as clear as it could have been. Somehow I expected more from you on this one! For those who don't know, there is not a rule in the book regarding ties for the simple reason that there is never going to be a tie in baseball except on the score board. I have never see an umpire calling a play at first base(or any base for that matter) yell.... "that right there is a tie boys, now let's flip a coin to see who is gonna win the call!) An umpire therefore never sees a tie...he either sees the foot hit and hears the pop of ball against leather, or hears the ball hit leather and then sees the foot hit. Pop plop or plop pop...and makes his call accordingly...no tie envolved.
  14. No one knows for certain who is in the sectionals until after tonights game. We could make predictions but that would just be an educated guess. So if I'm gong to guess or predict at this point I will be biased and say that my team will be there!
  15. Top 40 Baseball Rule Myths Put your brain to work and see if you can find the rules covering these myths? I love good detective work, so show me some proof that they really are false statements. 1. The hands are considered part of the bat. 2. The batter-runner must turn to his right after over-running first base. 3. If the batter breaks his wrists when swinging, it's a strike. 4. If a batted ball hits the plate first it's a foul ball. 5. The batter cannot be called out for interference if he is in the batter's box. 6. The ball is dead on a foul-tip. 7. The batter may not switch batter's boxes after two strikes. 8. The batter who batted out of order is the person declared out. 9. The batter may not overrun first base when he gets a base-on-balls. 10. The batter is out if he starts for the dugout before going to first after a dropped third strike. 11. If the batter does not pull the bat out of the strike zone while in the bunting position, it's an automatic strike. 12. The batter is out if a bunted ball hits the ground and bounces back up and hits the bat while the batter is holding the bat. 13. The batter is out if his foot touches the plate. 14. The batter-runner is always out if he runs outside the running lane after a bunted ball. 15. A runner is out if he slaps hands or high-fives other players, after a homerun is hit over the fence. 16. Tie goes to the runner. 17. The runner gets the base he's going to, plus one on a ball thrown out-of-play. 18. Anytime a coach touches a runner, the runner is out. 19. Runners may never run the bases in reverse order. 20. The runner must always slide when the play is close. 21. The runner is always safe when hit by a batted ball while touching a base. 22. A runner may not steal on a foul-tip. 23. It is a force out when a runner is called out for not tagging up on a fly ball. 24. An appeal on a runner who missed a base cannot be a force out. 25. A runner is out if he runs out of the baseline to avoid a fielder who is fielding a batted ball. 26. Runners may not advance when an infield fly is called. 27. No run can score when a runner is called out for the third out for not tagging up. 28. A pitch that bounces to the plate cannot be hit. 29. The batter does not get first base if hit by a pitch after it bounces. 30. If a fielder holds a fly ball for 2 seconds it's a catch. 31. You must tag the base with your foot on a force out or appeal. 32. The ball is always immediately dead on a balk. 33. If a player's feet are in fair territory when the ball is touched, it is a fair ball. 34. The ball must always be returned to the pitcher before an appeal can be made. 35. With no runners on base, it is a ball if the pitcher starts his windup and then stops. 36. The pitcher must come to a set position before a pick-off throw. 37. The pitcher must step off the rubber before a pick-off throw. 38. If a fielder catches a fly ball and then falls over the fence it is a homerun. 39. The ball is dead anytime an umpire is hit by the ball. 40. The home plate umpire can overrule the other umps at anytime.

    Foul Ball

Rolling on the floor laughing at the pictoral book.... Maybe not written in crayon but left in outlines co they can color it in...might get even get them past the first page in a rule book...imagine that!

    Foul Ball

If he hovered near his base after a caught fly ball and never actually retouched said base bag... then took off running in a delayed advance never having retouched before the next pitch it would appear to me you do have grounds for an appeal that he advanced on a caught fly ball (foul or fair is irrelevant at this point) without tagging up... However if the pitcher throws a pitch like the one umpire said I would thing that it was conceded that he was not going to advance and was simply in his lead-off position looking for a steal/pickoff opportunity.
  20. Those stats would be hard to provide unless your a coach of the team. I keep stats on all our games and I can give you numbers that are close but they are not official. I have had maybe a half dozen calls that the official scorer at an away game would charge and error and I would say no way... he beat the throw to first and there was no bobble of the ball that is an infield single all day long... My on son is a victim of my scorekeeping... he says coach has me for 1 more double then you have... I say go find which games you got your doubles in and I will consider it.. he came back and I said no way... I draw the path of the ball on my scoring sheet.. he dumped single over the shortstop and it was fielded cleanly by the left fielder... there was a runner on 3rd and the field threw into the catcher and my son moved to second on the throw...E7 perhaps and a great heads up alert running young man but not a double... well coach has it as a double and thats the official record.. I say well coach is wrong on this one! But my point is as close as my stats are to the official they will be off a little and therefore not accurate enough to provide to others. That probably is the reason you are getting no replies to this thread... you want numbers and they just are not available. Now ask simple who the best sluggers are in the state and your thread will light up with bragging players and parents! That would be very objective and require no facts to back it up! All you need is an oppinion!

    Foul Ball

Slyder is that one of the 10 famous myths of baseball??? You know that most of our Little League umpires use those Myths instead of reading the rules... why they grew up playing ball and watching it on TV so why should they read a book about something they are already experts on???? (tongue in cheek) I should not be so sarcastic I know! Let assume that if he was a "real umpire" there was more to the story then telling a someone there is no rule saying you return to your base on a foul balls.... He might have been teasing and somebody just missed his sarcasism....now that I think about it that is probably how all these myths came to be... hand are part of the bat for instance... that is a rule but it only applies if the batter is swinging at the ball otherwise you det hit on the knuckles trying to avoid a wild inside pitch and you get first base! But listen to the fans scream "hands are part of the bat blue...hand are part of the bat" This year at one of DB's away tourneys something else strange happened and I bet you a dollar 1 in 10 umpires have never had to call it. Situation.... inside pitch that appears to hit off the knob of the bat.... the ball goes about 3 foot towards the pitcher who picks it up and steps on home plate (bases loaded) umpire calls the runner out for the final out in the bottom of the 7th.... Now that is correct if it had indeed hit the bottom of the bat (little league where they choke up on the bat that can happen). Have you ever seen the high school boys pick up a bat and hang the bottom 2 fingers over the end of the knob???? It help to make the bat about a 1/4 inch longer without picking up the extra weight that comes with a longer bat.... My son even takes athletic tape and makes a second knob right against the first ( or rather make the first knobe about 1 /2 inched thick) to help him get that grip down lower without the bat being uncomfortable.... built up handle smothing out the knob effectively.... The boy this was called on a couple months ago has the blood blisters on the little finger and along the lenght of the palm to prove it hit him and not his bat.... He reacted immideately dropping the bat and grabbin that hand... I would too if my hand got sandwiched between the bat and a 95 mph fast ball. That was a tough loss to walk away from... we lost by one run so the HP would have tied the game and brought another batter up with bases still loaded in order to walk off with a win in the bottom of 7th. Lotta things for an umpire to consider in less then 2 seconds before he makes the call! I for one do not envy the umpires and 99 % of the time I say they get it right! When they mess up you learn to walk away and say well dang it...we should not have been down by 1 run in the bottom of the 7th to begin with!

    Foul Ball

Sorry catsbackr.. I should have noted that myself... I have not read the FED rules however it is my understanding that they closely follow the OBR with most of the differences being safety type changes... correct me if I am way off base on this.

    Foul Ball

I read the rule book from cover to cover about 3 times each year. It is not that hard to do...commercials between the Braves games are a good time to read! If a Mom can know this much about the rules of baseball and how to find the answer in the rule book in less then 15 seconds then shame on the umpire who did not at least know it was not true even if he could not quote the rule....he could easily have said you have to return to the base...meet me back at my truck and I will look up the exact rule in the book for you.

    Foul Ball

    OBR 5.09 The ball becomes dead and runners advance one base, or return to their bases, without liability to be put out, when -- (a) A pitched ball touches a batter, or his clothing, while in his legal batting position; runners, if forced, advance; (/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> The plate umpire interferes with the catcher’s throw; runners may not advance. NOTE: The interference shall be disregarded if the catcher’s throw retires the runner. © A balk is committed; runners advance; (See Penalty 8.05). (d) A ball is illegally batted; runners return; (e) A foul ball is not caught; runners return. The umpire shall not put the ball in play until all runners have retouched their bases;
  25. That would be tough on a pitching staff too I would think. Only one day off after a 2 game day???
