Welcome back, Emily Hutchins.
After taking a season off from softball, Hutchins is back playing at Soddy-Daisy High School. She was a key factor offensively Thursday when the Lady Trojans defeated Baylor 5-0.
Hutchins hit an RBI double down the left-field line in the bottom of the third inning and a two-run single up the middle in the fifth. She ran track last spring while the softball team was heading to a Class AAA state championship.
"I did it to keep in shape," said Hutchins, who is also an all-district basketball player. "By no means am I the fastest person in the world.
"Sometimes I still feel kind of funny being back out here. I'm glad they won, but I'm glad to be back, too."
Soddy-Daisy coach Clifford Kirk is glad to have her back because she helps fill the two voids graduation created from last year's team. On Thursday she played second base, Kacy Cooper's old position, and batted third, Lauren Upton's former spot.
"She chose not to play last year, but this year she wanted to come back out, so I told her, 'Come on out,' " Kirk said. "It so happens she was an outfielder previously, but she played some infield for me in middle school, so we moved her to infield and she's helped out tremendously. She can play second base or shortstop.
"She works hard. She hustles all the time, and she'll get you a base hit now and then."
Pitcher Nikki Waters shut down Baylor (6-3) on four singles. She walked one and struck out 12.
Two of the Lady Red Raiders' hits came consecutively from Mandy Harris and Lauren Lybrand with one out in the fifth. No. 9 batter Kaitlyn Phillips then lined into a double play.
"We were going against a great pitcher, but I thought our hitters just didn't approach the game very well," Baylor coach Kelli Smith said. "The bottom of our order got up there and took some good cuts at it. Overall, though, our approach to our offensive game wasn't very good."
Lyndsey Stiles also had two hits for Soddy-Daisy (8-0). She stole two bases and scored a run.
Caitlin Holcomb came off the bench and singled and stole second, starting the two-run fifth. Waters' ground-rule double to left-center in the third started a two-run rally that included a throwing error on Amanda Johnson's sacrifice bunt and Stacey Fairbanks' sacrifice fly.
"I really felt like we gave up three runs," Smith said. "They took advantage of some mistakes, and they had a couple of good clutch hits."
