  1. I just read in my local paper the the Coach of our High School has 9 baseball games scheduled during the "dead period". He is calling it "legion ball", but he has 13 of the HS players on this team. Is this leagal?

Do the new TSSAA rules about Summer travel teams not having more than 5 or 6 players from any one HS not apply here?

  2. There are still a couple of slots open for the college exposure tournament in Chattanooga June 12 - 15 for 16 and 18 year old fastpitch teams. All teams are scheduled six games ALL AT ONE LOCATION, the newly renovated Warner Park Complex and the adjoining University of Tennessee-Chattanooga stadium. It's a great opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to be seen by colleges recruiting players.

There are still some discounted hotel rates for every budget starting at $ 49. . For more information see vfanman@msn.com - but it would have to be this week. Tournament starts June 12.

Are the renovations to Warner Park complete, or will be complete in time for this event?

  3. I dont know, in high school ball you can step back or rock back.

I think they were referring to the push off in front of the rubber instead of from the rubber.

    Yes.

Thanks for clarifying my post swingaway!

  4. Heck, why dont we just let the pitchers get a running start from second!

    That's funny /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

As I have said before, enforce the rules....or just take them out of the book.

  5. There have been several discussions on this board about illegal pitches

not being called in high school ball.

Various reason included re-plant or crow hopping, leaping, or back foot not dragging.

Swingaway posted a some great pictures and a video as examples.

Mytwocents posted the NFHS video on this subject.

I watched HS District games last week, and observed another example:

When pitcher would start windup and rock or step back, the heel of her push-off

foot would come off the rubber, with her toe maintaining contact with the rubber.

    (or sometimes the ground)

Pitcher would scoot or slide her push-off foot several inches in front of the rubber,

and then finish delivery. Was not called once.

Saw this same delivery in the VA Tech vs NC State in ACC Championship game on

Sunday. Tincher of VA Tech was called for illegal pitch 5 times.

Has anyone seen this called in HS?

  8. Sounds like you have the formula to get them out. Outside and offspeed away, I have seen girls try and slap like that but I have never seen it taught that way. If they are starting that far back they are probably starting on pitcher motion instead of when they see the ball. When they make contact they probably hit it up the middle or to the right side which is not really where you want it as a slapper. If the are out of the box like that I am surprised the ump doesn't call it because they have to be way out of the baseline headed toward first.

The drawback to that formula, is if our pitcher tries to be too careful, and walks the slapper.

The ones I have observed slapping in this manner, merely stick the bat out to try and tip the

top half of the ball. After two strikes, they changed to a more conventional swing of a slapper,

to avoid being called out for bunting on 3rd strike.

Most teams have at least one slapper, however I did see one team that had 3.

The slappers I have the most concern for as an opponent, are the ones that can slap the

slow rollers to the left side, AND power slap. They are a lot tougher to defend.

  9. If any part of the foot is in contact with the chalk you are in the box. That is the way I understand it. I haven't seen anyone called this year for being out of the box but really a slapper shouldn't be out unless they are fooled on a change-up. All a slapper should have is one crossover step or some step back with their front foot and then crossover before contact. I have seen several called for fouling a third strike and the ump calls them out saying they were bunting. The ones I saw I thought were bad calls but some were close calls. When a slapper is trying to hit soft to the left side sometimes they don't break their wrists which by partial definition is a bunt.

The ones I was referring to as being out of the box, take their stance as far back in the box as possible.

They do not use the crossover step as you described, instead, they just start running toward the pitcher,

and punch at the pitch with their bat.

They can not touch most far outside pitches, or changeups away, because their front foot is out of the box,

and their body is already starting to move toward 1B.

Those using this technique, also have a hard time getting into the running lane down the 1B line.

  10. Please list any postponements for today, Thursday May 8th. Include the re-schedule day and time if/when available.

It looks like the weather will clear up enough to get the remaining District games in.

Question: if due to weather, the remaining games happen to rain out through Sunday.

What would be the process for determining which teams would be #1 and # 2 seed

    for Regions on Monday?

Vote of District coaches, coin flip, best record, highest seed?

  11. Forrest is one of the most rounded teams I've seen all year. Not only do they have 3 or 4 power hitters in their lineup, they are also blessed with a couple of very good slappers. I wish Cascade spent more time trying to develop some of their speedy runners into slappers. How many teams are you aware of that carry a couple of slappers. I personally use slappers during the summer because I think it adds a lot of pressure to a defense and mixes things up alot. Give me some feedback on who you feel does the best job of teaching this in the middle Tennessee area?

I agree. With their speed, slappers put a lot of pressure on the defense and the pitcher.

If the defense does not field a ground ball cleanly, they are on base.

If the pitcher is too cautious, they draw a walk. Chiles from UT was very good.

My only problem with slappers is.....some make contact with the ball when their front foot

is out of the box, and I have yet to see one called out.

  12. Not only is it legal, but the defensive player isn't doing his/her job if she allows access to a bag while in possession of the ball. You are NEVER obligated to leave base access while in possession of the ball.

In baseball you can bowl over the catcher, but if a softball player does that, they are subject to be ejected right?

  13. I thought the rule had already been changed. You shouldn't be able to block the plate without the ball. It's dangerous for the runner and the catcher. Runners have to slide at home when a play is imminent. The rule did need to be changed...to clarify. Otherwise...a catcher could block the runner short of the plate and then get the ball and tag. The runner does not have the option of running over the catcher.

What if an infielder or catcher have possesion of the ball, and the runner is sliding into the base/plate.

Can the defensive player block access to the base/plate, or are they supposed to leave a lane for the runner to slide?

  14. Guys, it is very clear due to the angle of her back foot and the position of her arm she is taking a second push off from this point. Here I will give you a video of her going outside of the 24" lane on a screw ball. She is pitching against Peroni who plays for Tennessee ( used to play for Goodpasture)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEZa2r6mTL0

Great video. I watched that game, and thought she was outside the 24" limit several times on her screwball.

Also, on both 3-2 pitches, she crowhopped to get a little "extra" on her fastball.

  15. I totally agree. Re-planting should be called because you do gain an advantage. What swingaway is calling a re-plant is not a re-plant. You can't replant 3 feet from the rubber.

It appears the guy on the crowhop tab on the NFHS video on mytwocents post on page 3,

is actually dragging and replanting 2-3 feet in front of the rubber.

    Take a look and let me know what you think. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

  16. She can drag away but what she cannot do is take a second push from where she stops dragging which

is what she does when she throws her rise.

I posted a topic on this very issue a few weeks ago.

I agree with swingaway. The pitcher may drag, but if a re-plant occurs, (which many do),

an illegal pitch SHOULD be called.... regardless of WHAT pitch is thrown, or what inning.

  17. Thanks for the kind words about Amber. We appreciate the prayers and support. A couple of corrections to this post. It was a season ending injury, the surgery went well and the surgeon expects her to make a full recovery. Second, she is is signed with UAB not Alabama, and finally it is my opinion that the metal cleats were not a factor, the injury was due to her ankle buckling when she impacted the catcher's shin guards.

It's always sad to hear a player going down with a season ending injury.

Best wishes for a full recovery, and good luck at the next level.

  18. i am a tssaa official in chattanooga. I know for a fact, at least here, that rules are stictly enforced. If the teams around here see that you are repeatedly not making a call they will not hesitate to contact the the area UIC to get the problem solved. In our monthly meetings it is highly stressed to enforce all rules no matter what the circumstances. That is here in chatt. so i cant speak for other areas. We are also human and people make mistakes and it takes years and years to learn all of the rules and their interpretations. Maybe, the parents in the stands should do the training classes from now on??? Another bit of useful information is to never compare high school ball to summer ball, rules are so much different. The crow hop thing about having to be an advantage is correct. If a pitcher is crow hopping and striking out batters, then i would call it but if she is doing it and walking batter after batter then whats the point?? which is why it does say in the asa rules that it must be an advantage to the pitcher. The reason is b/c, the crow hop is not taught anymore b/c it has been made illegal. So, if you do come across a pitcher who is TRULY crow hopping shell be throwing the ball all over the place. Most parents view of crow hopping is very very far from actual crow hopping. In order to do it, it takes lots and lots of practice. i have never seen a girl ever come close to crow hopping. bad mechanics? yes crow hopping? no

If so, then why did a SD pitcher NOT get called for a crow hop or replant in HS, while winning several state titles, then get called for it repeatedly in college? (as another has posted)

I got a chance to see Ooltewah's pitcher this year(who is great), and pitches correctly.

    It can be done!

  19. I dont know, maybe Breeden was mad about how Mt Juliets coach treated his good friend Terry Floyd down in Coffee County and he doesnt want to put up with her BS.

    ( Sorry, I'm just kidding!)

I would think Coach Breeden would not do that, but I guess someone will post the real reason.

    I'll just buy lunch with the ticket money I was holding back. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

  20. I had the date circled on my calendar, and my admission price tucked away in my wallet. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Unfortunately, I have heard, Riverdale called today and cancelled their Tuesday night game at Mount Juliet. One day notice. /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Does anyone know why Riverdale cancelled tonight's game vs Mount Juliet????

Maybe a make up District game that was rained out

  21. I agree with a couple of the other posts on here.

The trophy being left behind isn't that big of a deal.

The bad thing is how some people try to tarnish a tourney win and basically bash CC for something the umps did.

The way I understand it from players and parents, the ump called Shelby safe then went to the other side of home plate to (for some reason) check if the catcher had the ball. Then he called her safe again. Let it go. It was a close call and even if she was out, who's to say CC wouldn't have held MJ one more inning and then score?

Respect goes to all the CC and MJ players and coaches.

It was a good game to watch from a fans perspective. Very exciting.

However....the umpire did not call the runner safe twice, I was there.

  22. A game truly worth the price of admission

  23. Truthfully, I though MJ invented this type of tourney several years ago when we used to go to their tourney. They would somehow put 8 of top 10 teams in tournament in top bracket and put themselves in the bottom. However, they would also give themselves double byes so that they only had to play 1 game to get to finals. Never thought Goodpasture would ever go back.

Don't think the same thing goes on from now since Coach Ped. has arrived, but MJ did it as well as anyone in days gone bye. Might be where SD picked it up.

Congratulations to both MJ & CC for getting to finals. But the BIG GAME has yet to be played. Coach Ped. & Coach Terry do a great job-

    See ya in the boro!

A former MJ head coach is now an asst coach at Hendersonville.
