    DEAD PERIOD

Do the new TSSAA rules about Summer travel teams not having more than 5 or 6 players from any one HS not apply here?
  3. Are the renovations to Warner Park complete, or will be complete in time for this event?

    illegal pitch

That's funny /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> As I have said before, enforce the rules....or just take them out of the book.

    illegal pitch

There have been several discussions on this board about illegal pitches not being called in high school ball. Various reason included re-plant or crow hopping, leaping, or back foot not dragging. Swingaway posted a some great pictures and a video as examples. Mytwocents posted the NFHS video on this subject. I watched HS District games last week, and observed another example: When pitcher would start windup and rock or step back, the heel of her push-off foot would come off the rubber, with her toe maintaining contact with the rubber. (or sometimes the ground) Pitcher would scoot or slide her push-off foot several inches in front of the rubber, and then finish delivery. Was not called once. Saw this same delivery in the VA Tech vs NC State in ACC Championship game on Sunday. Tincher of VA Tech was called for illegal pitch 5 times. Has anyone seen this called in HS?
  7. The drawback to that formula, is if our pitcher tries to be too careful, and walks the slapper. The ones I have observed slapping in this manner, merely stick the bat out to try and tip the top half of the ball. After two strikes, they changed to a more conventional swing of a slapper, to avoid being called out for bunting on 3rd strike. Most teams have at least one slapper, however I did see one team that had 3. The slappers I have the most concern for as an opponent, are the ones that can slap the slow rollers to the left side, AND power slap. They are a lot tougher to defend.
  8. The ones I was referring to as being out of the box, take their stance as far back in the box as possible. They do not use the crossover step as you described, instead, they just start running toward the pitcher, and punch at the pitch with their bat. They can not touch most far outside pitches, or changeups away, because their front foot is out of the box, and their body is already starting to move toward 1B. Those using this technique, also have a hard time getting into the running lane down the 1B line.
  9. I agree. With their speed, slappers put a lot of pressure on the defense and the pitcher. If the defense does not field a ground ball cleanly, they are on base. If the pitcher is too cautious, they draw a walk. Chiles from UT was very good. My only problem with slappers is.....some make contact with the ball when their front foot is out of the box, and I have yet to see one called out.
  10. In baseball you can bowl over the catcher, but if a softball player does that, they are subject to be ejected right?
  11. What if an infielder or catcher have possesion of the ball, and the runner is sliding into the base/plate. Can the defensive player block access to the base/plate, or are they supposed to leave a lane for the runner to slide?
  12. Great video. I watched that game, and thought she was outside the 24" limit several times on her screwball. Also, on both 3-2 pitches, she crowhopped to get a little "extra" on her fastball.
  13. It appears the guy on the crowhop tab on the NFHS video on mytwocents post on page 3, is actually dragging and replanting 2-3 feet in front of the rubber. Take a look and let me know what you think. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
  14. I posted a topic on this very issue a few weeks ago. I agree with swingaway. The pitcher may drag, but if a re-plant occurs, (which many do), an illegal pitch SHOULD be called.... regardless of WHAT pitch is thrown, or what inning.
  15. It's always sad to hear a player going down with a season ending injury. Best wishes for a full recovery, and good luck at the next level.
  16. If so, then why did a SD pitcher NOT get called for a crow hop or replant in HS, while winning several state titles, then get called for it repeatedly in college? (as another has posted) I got a chance to see Ooltewah's pitcher this year(who is great), and pitches correctly. It can be done!
  17. I would think Coach Breeden would not do that, but I guess someone will post the real reason. I'll just buy lunch with the ticket money I was holding back. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
  18. Does anyone know why Riverdale cancelled tonight's game vs Mount Juliet???? Maybe a make up District game that was rained out
  19. It was a good game to watch from a fans perspective. Very exciting. However....the umpire did not call the runner safe twice, I was there.
  20. I had the date circled on my calendar, and my admission price tucked away in my wallet. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Unfortunately, I have heard, Riverdale called today and cancelled their Tuesday night game at Mount Juliet. One day notice. /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
  21. A former MJ head coach is now an asst coach at Hendersonville.
  22. If you have a picture or video, please provide.
  23. I have been around many ballparks over the years, and on many occasions, have seen partial or whole rubber cleats in the dirt, that have been torn off a player's shoes. But anyone would be hard pressed to find a metal cleat that has been torn from the shoe!
  24. Over the years, I have come to realize, there are two sides to every story, and somewhere in the middle lies the truth. And when you put that rationalization to sports....if someone describes a game ending play as a bang-bang call, (as another has posted) then their team MUST have been on the happy side of the call. And the team on the sad side will call it a blown or bad call. I also saw the play in question, and I respectfully disagree with your description of the play. I saw the umpire standing behind the plate when the play occurred. The umpire then circled around the play to the mound side of the plate, and asked the catcher if she had the ball. When catcher showed the ball in her glove, the umpire signaled safe. From my viewpoint, I did not have the angle to see if the tag was actually made or not. But why would the umpire circle around and ask to see the ball, if he/she knew immediately, the runner was safe? Between each inning, the homeplate umpire would stand a few feet from the plate, on the first base foul line. The 1B umpire would stand on the same line, about halfway between home and 1B. However, on several occassions, the 3B umpire would walk over to the 3B fence and carry on a conversation with someone who appeared to be from CC. The 3B umpire was involved in a couple of calls, that got the MJ fans upset, and when the call at home occured, they were very upset, and the words "home cooking" came out.
