  1. 2cents, Farragut at home or Karns on the road - which DB-South game mattered? Yes, beating them even just once to end their district win streak was a nice accomplishment especially on senior night, but regional finals is when you want to win.

  2. Now that is a scary thought. No doubt all displays of spandex and the like by most posters on this VB board should be permitted by law only in the privacy of one's home.

Sounds sick, but PHargis may be an exception. Hey PH, why don't you pull on some zebra stripes with 1-inch inseam so we can pick you out of the Cool Springs crowd?

PS - Sorry I can't just let it go, but the last district game is important only if you think district 2AAA has anything. Perhaps we differ on this point. (Reckon that fired up any Morristown VB fans?)

  3. OK, get your spandex all in a wad riding an emotional roller coaster during every point of the likely 2 or even 3 South-DB matches in districts next week. Surely both of these squads have higher aspirations than winning conference or district. Let's chat again after substate and see which match mattered. Winning substate on the road is TOUGH.

  4. No ties between Shaffer and South that I know of. I'm pretty sure she came to DB from Sullivan East but don't know if she was there when East made a run in the state tourney maybe 8 or 10 years ago. Think she was.

Even so, everything between South and DB is up close and personal. However, other than a statement win for South, the match really meant nothing. Ditto for the district tourney next week as it would be a shock if one of the Morristown's or whoever manages to knock off either. The only potential DB-South match that matters is regional final that sends loser to Knoxville for substate and the winner home to host.

  5. Since your daughter goes to South Greene, I assume you are mostly interested in NET. Not as familiar with AA as AAA, but after dropping down from AAA look for Sullivan East to do well this year. They really weren't a factor in 1AAA but were solid and should benefit from going down and having one of the biggest enrollments in AA. (SGHS may be the smallest?) The only thing that could hurt them this year is getting a new coach, but her VB pedigree is strong including last stint as assistant at Carson Newman.

  6. but did they win a game i checked the last time a team won from the big nine and imac was the 1994 & 1995 D.B. team making to the semi finals getting beat twice by Shelbyville, i think if you check the last ten years the imac has done much better in the region and sub state

Agreed that the IMAC has generally gone further than the Big 9 in recent years. However, this was pretty much ALL Greeneville and their days in the IMAC and the IMAC itself are over due to reclassification. Perhaps Mo West can actually make it to state and win a game next season but it won't be from the old 6-team IMAC.

You don't have to go back nearly that far to find a state tourney game winner. In 2004, Greeneville girls won their first game before losing to eventual champion Shelbyville in the semi's.

  7. How do more that 2 teams qualify from substate???

Looks like there were NO 13U (and many other age groups) teams from the West. So they took EVERYONE that entered from South and North Middle. Are they going to take ALL 8 13U teams from the East substate? I hardly think so. (Where can I find East brackets for 13U or any other age for that matter?)

Does anyone wonder why AAU is in decline?

PS - Looks like there are 3 11U Lady Trotters teams and one went to Shelbyville for substate. Another was 2nd in the East.

  8. Does anyone think District 1AAA will win a single game in regionals? I watched MWest, Greeneville, and Cocke Co (& DB) in the GreenBank tourney and don't think there is anyone in the Big 9 that can play with them. The winner of the district tourney might have a shot on their home floor vs IMAC #4 (Jeff Co or MEast), but the rest might as well forget it. This is the weakest Big 9 I've seen in 3 years.

Can someone give me a reason to cheer up?

Never been so happy to admit I was dead wrong. Congratulations Big 9 ladies!

Now can someone slay the MoWest giant? Will take an all-around effort that most don't have the personnel to pull off. With Moody Central may have had the best shot, but without her TN High has the best chance. Science Hill won't go down without a fight though.

  9. The BIG 9 is not really that much weaker than before. 2 teams in the IMAC are just way ahead. MoWest is a powerhouse, and Cocke Co. is just reaching their prime. I would be surprised if anybody besides these to make it out of the Regionals alive. But Big 9 not win a game? Don't see that happening. Jeff Co. and MoEast are very talented, but not more so than the top Big 9 teams. And didn't Tennessee High just beat Greeneville? So it can be done. I could see the Big 9 winning 1 or maybe 2 (if the matchups are right) in the 1st round, but I see MoWest and Cocke Co. coming out in the end.....................

You are right about matchups. Even on their home floor, shocked to see TN High beat Greeneville after watching GHS dominate DB. Due to injury think Greeneville lost some ballhandling that was already suspect and TN High is quick enough to take advantage while DB is not.

So, if DB wins district tourney and TN High finishes second, both could win home games against Jeff Co/MEast and GHS, respectively. Flip the finish though and both could go down in flames on first night of regionals. District 1AAA road teams are toast.

  10. Does anyone think District 1AAA will win a single game in regionals? 11. Disappointed to read in the JC Press b-ball preview, that Jasmine Foster decided not to play this year for Science Hill...her presence under the boards will be sorely missed on The Hill.

Also surprised to see the press had Boone picked as 5th or so, and Crockett next to last. Crockett will be a major player this season, I think.

No Foster probably means SH cannot win the district. It was going to be a battle with DB anyway and now they don't have any muscle to shove around multiple DB big girls.

Is Central really as bad as they looked in the jamboree? With a post and Murr, Crockett will finish no lower than 6th.

    Top 3: DB, SH, Central

    Middle: THS, Crockett, South

    Bottom: East, Boone, Volunteer

  12. I believe that Crockett will be much higher. They play hard plus the BIG transfer won't hurt either. Will only make their zone defense better and now teams will have to guard them both inside and out. Who knows how good they could be. Should be fun to watch.

Tell me more about this transfer. Is she from Unicoi?

Agreed that a big post could be enough to get Crockett off the bottom and perhaps as high as 5th in the district. Not a lot separating the bottom five.

  13. Science HillDobyns BennettTennessee HighSullivan CentralSullivan South Sullivan EastVolunteerDaniel BooneDavid Crockett

Swap Central and Tennessee High and this looks pretty close. Moody has more help than Montgomery. DB may have more talent, but SHHS has more seniors. It will be a battle in the bottom five.

  14. While this poster has seeen one of your teams play three times this year, I have not seen others but your answer to this question gives a background to what I am looking for. If you were to pick thiose players who were having a Great Season can you give me 3 that most in the conference would say their play has been outstanding?

I'm partial to hitters so this list is going to miss some good setters & defenders, but Megan Devine and Meredith Hardy from Dobyns Bennett would probably have to be in the top 3. The third is probably a toss up between Morgan Flaherty of Science Hill and Kaydee Shaffer of Sullivan South. One could argue that Devine, Flaherty, & Shaffer are more complete players as they rotate around, but Hardy is a bazooka.

  15. The rumors are, and not yet confirmed, tha the Big Nine may be the big 7 next year. If it does, what are your thoughts?

Per TSSAA website, tentative 2009-2013 classifications drop East (989) to AA and keep Central (1069) in AAA (2nd smallest school):

    http://www.tssaa.org/Classifications/2009Classes.htm

There may still be some movement before things are settled in the next week or two, but it looks more like the Big 8.

Interesting to compare fall 2008 enrollments with final district standings:

    1) Dobyns Bennett 1942

    2) Sullivan South 1094

    3) Tennessee High 1342

    4) Science Hill 2158

    5) Sullivan Central 1069

    6) Sullivan East 989

    7) Daniel Boone 1407

    8) Davy Crockett 1346

    9) Volunteer 1249

Easy to spot the over- & underacheivers, but socioeconomic factors play a big role in an "elitist" sport like VB.

  16. Didn't Hutchison beat big bad Dobyns Bennett 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Brentwood Invitational? Didn't Dobyns Bennett beat GPS in the finals of the Choo Choo?

Sounds like it would be a mistake to ignore West TN privates (or publics?).

Hey orcat, I don't understand any of PH's philosophical posts but I figure anyone that has that much time to promote VB can say what they want.

  17. Dobyns Bennett over Sullivan South in 5. South took first two, DB seized momentum with a 25-23 win in game 3, then closed it with relatively easy wins in 4 & 5.

Not as gut-wrenching as the first match, but a great crowd (>400?) and some high-level play from both sides. Should face off a few more times in districts and maybe regionals.

  18. The margin of Dobyns-Bennett's win over Science Hill (3-0, SH <20 all three games) was a little surprising especially given the match was at SH. I guess the coaches knew what they were doing when they unanimously picked DB to win the conference.

  19. In AAA, Dobbyns-Bennett will be playing a great match today in District 1, the Big Nine against Tennessee in a match which will pit two State Championship schools last year against each other.

Just a little off in that TN High went out the first night of districts last year and is picked to finish 6th in the district this year. The rematch of last year's state tourney teams from 1AAA, DB & Science Hill, takes place Thursday instead. This should be a great match.

  20. /motorbike.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":motorbike:" border="0" alt="motorbike.gif" /> I have an off=the-wall prediction... Science Hill will dominate this year... look for them to be in the finals at the State tourney this year. Coach Hyatt is one of the top in the state... She knows how to teach the game...Remember this prediction!

At the risk of trashing this great thread (good posts orcat) with uninformed (I haven't seen a camp or play day) banter, you may be right Walker Valley 3. Saw SHHS leaving practice the other day and they look very big and athletic. While they lost a lot (5 starters?) to graduation including Sydney Rice, consensus area player of the year, they do return a very strong player in Morgan Flaherty. Guess it will all depend on how they come together as a team. Any idea how they have done in camps/play days?

I still think the team to beat in district 1AAA is South, though. They return almost everyone including 7 seniors and some very strong juniors and a big sophomore. (See original post in this thread.) Of course, this team hasn't won anything since they lost the 6 seniors after '06 season.

It would be very foolish to ignore Dobyns Bennett, too. True they lost 5 to graduation, too, including arguably the second-best player in the area in Morgan Rutledge, but they return some solid players in Devine and little Rutledge. Rumour has it they also lost Frohlich to basketball-only, too, but sophomore Meredith Hardy may be able to fill those rather big shoes.

Even if SHHS manages to get by one of these two in districts, they still have to deal with Morristown East in regionals. While I can't remember the last time a team from Morristown or all of district 2AAA for that matter made it to the state tourney, I don't think the 1AAA runnerup can take it for granted that they will come out of regionals.

All these great posts have me excited to stop the talking and start the playing.

  21. Speaking of transfers, any chance one or more of the Boone seniors ends up some place close like Crockett, SH, or South? Seems unlikely a senior would transfer just to play a game they may be tired of, but they might make a difference at a program like Crockett or South. Bucdaddio?

  22. In case you were not aware-all of the prior info does relate directly to high school basketball and the preview for 08-09.

    /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

In what way? Ashlee Mitchell (Vance MS), Chloe O'Neil (Blountville MS), Pink Panthers & Science Hill 8th-graders are all great, but since they won't play a single minute in a 08-09 1AAA game I agree that a whole page about them on a HS topic is way too much. Aren't there forums for both MS and girls basketball travel teams?

Maybe there is nothing to talk about in 1AAA girls basketball. If so, I've seen a rising sixth-grader...
