  1. I can tell you this, if the jumpers on the State Championship Volleyball Team decide to play during their off season, rebounding, intensity and endurance will not be a problem for Sullivan South. Two sports might not be the thing for this athletic group though.

Most of the South volleyball team gave up on basketball years ago and I think the last holdout left this year. Pretty sure the exodus wasn't limited to VB players either. Not sure jumping, rebounding, intensity, endurance, or even athleticism matter that much in their girls basketball program.

And I wish they were the State Champtionship Volleyball Team but that will have to wait for another year.

  2. Thanks for the kind words, jensat. It was a tough loss but only a few teams can win state. As PH suggested, there were a lot of good teams that went home disappointed.

Your daughter is a very good player. I'm sure she hasn't played her last VB game.

  3. Don't understand this logic. All 4 first-round losers face each other in elimination games Wed pm. If Indy and Ravenwood are the favorites, their first-round opponents, Farragut and Soddy, may be looking at going home after two. And, the longer you stay in the winners bracket the fewer games you have to play.

As a South fan, I'm glad we didn't draw Ravenwood in first round. Of course, Houston might kick our butts, too, depending on who shows up that day.

  4. TSSAA has posted bracket. First round matches are

    Farragut vs Ravenwood

    Houston vs Sullivan South

    Siegel vs Collierville

    Soddy Daisy vs Independence

So, do Ravenwood and Independence coast to the finals? I'm guessing not.

  5. I'm generally not a people person, but can't we just all get along? PH may be pretty far out there some times, but at least he apparently genuinely cares about HS volleyball. Unfortunately the sport is still at the stage that it can use every fan no matter how eccentric. Personally I hope to live long enough to be considered eccentric.

For example, bigblue, bigred, & knoxvb are obviously the same person...JUST KIDDING.

  6. Ageed. It's just that one seems to appear when the other disappears, both seem more than literate, and both seem to have an unhealthy affection for all things AC.

As for your rant, many of your points apply to places well beyond districts 2-4. I'm sure there are plenty in the mid-state that fit your description well.

  7. It is ashamed for the team that doesn't get out of the district. I think that Ravenwood, Brentwood and Indy are 3 of the top 5 in the state. Ravenwood has beat BHS and IHS, IHS has beat BHS twice in 5 games and BHS lost to Ranvenwood in 4. Indy and Ravenwood went 5 and I think they have another one left coming up.

THe district tourny will be brutal.

Haven't seen everyone, but based on results so far you are probably right.

Certainly these district battles will be a big advantage to the 2 survivors come state tourney time. Everyone else better be ready to play at a different level. And pace.

Any thoughts on the other 2 in your top 5? I think South and Soddy are about equal to each other which puts them with Farragut and Anderson. On any given day any one could beat the other depending on who shows up. Really don't know how they compare to Riverdale, Siegel, and Houston though.

  8. So what have AC and Farragut done in October when it counts?

In 2010 AC lost to Farragut in the regional semis. Farragut lost to DB in substate.

In 2009, AC's first year in AAA, AC didn't make it to regionals. Farragut lost to DB in substate.

In 2008, both made it to state, AC in AA-A and Farragut in AAA. Both finished 1-2 in pool play and failed to make the final bracket. AC's enrollment this year (1150) was higher than many AAA schools.

Unless you are talking about ancient history, Farragut appears have the better record in October.

  9. Yes, South should be favored to win district 1AAA. Undefeated is pretty unlikely though given their tourney schedule including two trips to mid-state: Brentwood on 9/9&10 and Murfreesboro on 10/7&8.

Perhaps some of those district 11AAA teams will show up at Brentwood or Mid-TN Classic. Pretty sure South will be there. They return 4 starters but lost a great setter, one MB, one OH, & the libero. Time will tell how their replacements step up but so far so good.

Agreed that AC looked like they were ready to go home half way through the first game. Neither team was very intense after that.

Where is AC going for their tourney dates?

  10. I think play days are poor indicators of a teams strengths.

Then it shouldn't matter much that South took down AC 25-8, 25-18, 16-18 at East Ridge play day on Saturday. (Don't get a false sense of hope from that 3rd game. Some middles may have been playing back row.) Ask some of the AC parents how well they matched up.

Yes it is still very early and perhaps those 4 or 5 girls on AC's bench that didn't play were starters. (South played 12 girls.) Or maybe someone was hurt. (South was missing starting OH.) And South may peak early since so many girls played club. However, based on what I saw it really isn't that close.

AC does have a very good OH (#12) and libero.

  11. Yes, South should be favored to win district 1AAA. Undefeated is pretty unlikely though given their tourney schedule including two trips to mid-state: Brentwood on 9/9&10 and Murfreesboro on 10/7&8. The talent and depth may be enough to finally get back to state. (Last trip was '06.) Think 10 out of 11 (maybe 11 of 12) varsity players played club this year. Beware of the SOPHOMORE OH. Somebody is going to get hurt. Just swallow your pride and get out of the way.

And Central could end up second in the district although it is hard to drop DB to 3rd after winning it all 2 years ago and finishing 2nd in the state last year. DB lost a ton of talent though and their coach and will be rebuilding. Most if not all of the Central girls also played club and they won't be afraid of South or DB.

Science Hill could enter the mix if they had another Rice or two. Unfortunately she can't play every position so they are probably looking at fourth. Many of the TN High girls also play club and they could end up in the 4 spot. In no particular order Volunteer, Boone, & Crockett will be 6-8. Very little club participation from these schools.

  12. This is complete crap. DB's setter was the best volleyball player in the state. Not to mention best setter. Their Middle is better then all three of the middles listed as well. How can you say they did a good job selecting this team? Find me a better outside than Riverdale's OS as well.

I am not saying the kids on the list arent good. I think the coach of the year should have been Karns coach. Who wins at Karns? Ever?

I'm a South fan and hate everything DB, but you are 100% correct on this one. If Rutledge & Hardy weren't all-state material, no one was. And, they finished SECOND IN THE STATE.

  13. My daughter has just informed of some very disturbing information from a fellow teammate. Per an earlier agreement from the coaches within the Big 8, since the finals are between 2 schools in District 1, the championship match was to be moved to Dobyns-Bennett who won the district championship. However, the coach from south has refused to allow this, thus fans and both teams will have to drive an hour to play the finals at Morristown West. This is a slap in the face to everyone from Dobyns-Bennett who worked so hard to win the district, not to mention a very unethical and unprofessional act from a cowardly coach who is refusing to honor what the conference coaches had agreed to. We all know that had south won the district, she would be all about the match being played at south. This is just another disgusting display by this coach. This reminds me of my daughter's freshman year I believe when this same coach allowed two girls from the varsity team to play JV who had not played JV all year just to beat an undefeated DB team in the JV tournament championship game. I now can understand why I heard a couple south players making a scene in the hallway after losing in the chattanooga tournament a couple years ago about how much the disliked playing for this coach and what a bad coach she was. After this act tonight, I tend to agree with them. This makes me look forward to when south volleyball won't even exist in 5-10 years and everyone in Colonial Heights will have to do the chop. Wendy, you know better than this disgraceful act. You have slapped the Lady Indians in the face and I hope they remember this tomorrow night!

Wow! Not only are you a noted VB historian that keeps up with who plays how many JV games for your opponents, but you also must be privy to meetings of Big 8 coaches and/or AD's. Unless of course, you are just spouting off based on something some player or coach told your daughter. As noted so well by the previous poster, it is far from clear that there was any such agreement among the coaches and even if there was the AD's may have known nothing about it.

So, when has something like this happened before? The only example that comes to mind is boys basketball last spring which as noted was played at Crockett, the district host, not Boone the district champion. Guess DB would have been happy to play at Boone, too.

Please tell me the "j" in your username does not stand for Jones. I would hate to think someone so hotheaded with such obvious hatred for South would have a position of authority in KVC. Certainly if I were a South VB parent I would think twice about sending my daughter to play VB on a club run by someone so obviously biased against South.

Roger, you aren't very tall, but you are a bigger man than I. I don't like DB and never will. Even if they annex me and everyone I love.

Enjoy your trip to the state tourney this year. Based on what you've got coming up, it will probably be the last for a while. Like maybe 5-10 years...

  14. So Science Hill is irrelevant, is what you are saying. And yes they they did win, beat Anderson County in the semis

Think I got more than SH with that one.

If you were up on your VB history you'd point out that Science Hill has been to state ('07) more recently than South ('06). Yes, it was their only trip and they only won one match, but it sure beats staying home.

Couldn't do much in the regular season against DB or South (or Central?), but maybe SH is ready to play with the big dogs now in the districts. Better do it soon before you run out of Rice sisters.

  15. Pick-O-Dixie results:

    Semi's

    Anderson Co over Morristown West

    South over Gate City

    Final

    South over AC (25-21, 25-16)

AC is pretty good. If they are young they will be a handful by the end of the season. Elsewhere someone posted that their libero was the best in ET. Not bad but best in ET?
