  1. I wouldn't say unstoppable.......If I remember correctly, SP was up on TC by 3 or 4 td's at the half in '98(i believe) and then tried to throw the second half and were beaten something like 35-32???? So no, I wouldn't say that they were unstoppable that year. Maybe in 1997.JMO

Correction the score was 20-7 halfway through the 2nd quarter SP.. Trousdale started running Payne on a little option play and scored twice to take the lead before the half..Even though the final was 32-42.. SP had opportunities to win, but a fumble by E. Moore and missed extra points made SP play catch up in the 4th..It wasnt till then in the 4th SP finally figured out how to stop one play that resulted over 200 yards of Trousdale's Offense..TC was not unstoppable SP and TC were hands down the 2 best teams in the state that year.. TC didnt make as many mistakes and they won..

I tend to agree.. Only loss in 98 was to BGA ( 31-10). S-Pitt was tough that yr in the 3rd rd too. Score ended up (42-32).

    4th round

Eddie Moore set a state record for SP in 98 also.I think it was most rushing TD in a season. 42 I think it was.Wow '98 was a great yr for 1A football in Middle Tennessee. More than 1 went pro.

SP also broke the state record for most points in a single season by any classifiction..

  2. SP was clearly the best 1A state in TN and there are more than likely teams from every class 1-5 that they could beat.

Having said that, Alcoa would match their speed and run them off the field. Even Goodpasture and DL would be too much for them; they would put some points on the board but both GP and DL would clearly win. This is not a shot at SP at all, they are 1 of the best 1A teams I have seen, the only better 1A champ that comes to mind would be the TC team from a couple of years ago.....

The Trousadale teams from 93,94,97,98,99 was better than the 05 team..Sorry Ditka said it first, not me..

  3. This could be the best offense the school has ever had.. The 98 team was just as powerful but they lacked the passing.. As far as them versus 98 Trousdale,,this years pirates wouldnt have a thing for Mr, Scruggs from Trousdale..They could score but they wouldnt score enough to beat them..I would agree this years team had more overall offensive fire power but 94 and 99 had better defenses..I also believe both of those teams had the power to run directly at this team and have alot of success.. So kinda hard to say which team would come out on top.. It will be a great argument for years to come.. Alot of schools do have this stuff to talk about so SP should be thankful..Great year for them and now they can say they have as many as that other team from up the road...Ditka OUT

  4. The almighty chosen one named Ditka will grace everyone with his presence.. I suppose I will go ahead and come to the game with him.. The Blue Raider nation promised him they would supply him with some nice seats away from fans.. Ditka thinks this will be a good game but thinks SP will win by 14 - 21 points.. I will have to agree with him on this one.. SP 42- M- 21

Oh and SP along with alot of the best teams every year on 1A could beat many many teamsn in 4 A... Not saying they could do it weekend and week out because of the numbers but they could...

If you look back at scrimmages games alone in the past 10 years or so.. It goes something like this

these are just a couple of examples.. Now i understand they are just scrimmage games but beating power houses from 4A and the big Privates is impressive non the less..

    94 South Pitt 35

    Soddy Daisy 21

    98 South Pitt 49

    McCallie 35

    99 South Pitt 28

    Ooltawah 0

Me and Ditka have seen Red Bank play, I am sorry to say but South Pittsburg has a much better team... As for Maryville, Yes South Pitt could score 14 but Maryville would score 42....

  5. Wow Ditka is crazy about these Hamburgers from SP....Said they rival a Chicago polish sausage dog.... Thanks again Zone for the Hamburger /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

This game looks like SP is playing Whitwell can we play the Junior Varsity the 2nd half to make it half way entertaining.... Ditka thinks SP needs to call the dogs off....

  6. Ditka says FCS stinks there defense is like swiss cheese....... They cannot contain SP speed..... Ditka is in amazment.... Thank you zonepirate once again for the luxery box seats this is amazing..... #21 has now scored on 70,50, and like 40 yard TD's.... Big number 24 is also playing big with his 99 yard run....

  7. I am posting from Ditka's blackberry it is now 28-7 with about 4 minutes to go before half.... Ditka said #21 is the nest coming of Devin Hester.....Wow SP scored again they are scoring at will it is now 34-7 again by #21....This is getting ugly guys.... Ditka wanted to see a good game....

  8. Hey everyone, I talked to a certain coach Ditka on the phone last night....Ditka said that SP and FC could be for the state title .....Ditka said FC is finally healthy and are more than likely better than TC and Gordonsville....However he thought SP had too much speed for any of them....So once again I will have to stick with Ditka on this game and say SP by 10.....Ditka has thought about flying in Jasper airport Friday morning to come to the game.... I need to talk to someone from SP to see if Ditka can get some luxury seats in the press box soo he wont have to sign autographs.... If anyone has any info let me know.. I will be escorting Ditka to the game... Thanks Ditka's Friend

  9. Old Pirate says "ALLRIGHT", here is a youngon who has made a post that all level headed folks should agree with.

OP says SP has dominated "all" Ala teams it has played thru the years. OP is a war eagle fan but is not confused enough to say Ala is all that. Heck, if that were true Bama would only need to recruit locals.

OP says "IF" SP,Jasper were combined, OH......... wait........ that's very painful............... they would be just fine, and would take NJ behind the wood shed. Perhaps some old warrior could give his take on this. OP would say, jasper was the dominate team when they played Bridgeport,Stevenson AND yes THE GREAT NORTH JACKSON. NJ has never beaten a team in Tenn as far as OP can remember. OP says "come get some".

OP says Ala fans are similar to the TT fans, denial is just part of their confused minds.

I know that had to hurt OP. You have some great insight and SP would beat most schools in the No. Ala. area. NJ would be a great game. I talked with coach Ditka and we did some research and it would be rather easy for NJ to get some of the teams from Tenn. Congrats to the pirates, the SP program has a great football tradition and has earned the respect of most football minded fans. Coach Ditka and I think the privates should be put in their own classification as well.

  10. I believe Coach Ditka said he thought SP would kill Boyd... I agreed with him, my prediction was 41-14 which was fairly close... Zone I am confused if the kids dad you speak of was on the 99 team, wouldnt that mean he was like 12 or 13 when he fathered a child?? Anyways another impressive victory for the Pirates... That might have found some of that heart that didnt exist last year...

  11. I actually made it down for the game this past Friday.. I picked Coach Ditka up at the Marion County Airport before the game and rode down to see a barn burner... Coach Ditka was amazed at the speed for 2 smaller schools.. He was impressed with SP defense the most... He told me if SP continues to get better it will be rough for someone to beat them... However I have seen in he past SP has got the big head and then gets smacked around by someone so time will tell.... Oh yeah Great game atmosphere the Chilli Cheese toast with a slaw dog was very yummy...Good luck too both teans the rest of year...

  12. The offensive line for the Single-Wing is a religion. The center has to have ice water in his veins. He needs to be able to snap it to the tail back, full back or blocking back or even the wb on a rare wrinkle.

For our information, Univerisity of Arkansas ran some singlewing type plays last year with McFadden the chewed up Outaburn at home and Tennessee up in Flakeyville!

Also, why is it that and old man like Dale Gibson can still kick a 40 yard filed goal and the young Pirates can't figure it out?

There was a lot of grumbling by some fans during the sw days but I liked to watch it when a good team ran it and would and did drive 400 miles to see them play. Phil Beene learned the single wing from General Bob Neyland himself and put in the variation with the blocking back side-saddle behind the center. Dale Gibson was one of the best BB I saw out of SP along with Mark Allison and Chris Ferrel.

the SW can be ran with a balanced line, unbalanced line with 2 TE on either side or with a SE and the WB can be lined up out in the slot . . . and holey moley a passing formation. Throw in some motion like the 85-87 teams had and you could even fake a pass and toss sweep to Johnny Sisco or Carl Lehr. Plus the wingbacks were good receivers and on those teams and I beleive it was during a semi-final game against Westmorland that Ferrel and one of the WB brock the record of the most consecutive passes . . . 11 in a row I believe to break the Wigfall record mentioned above.

Also, for you young guys that haven't figured it out, the various T-formations are pretty old. Ken Colquitt made Jasper famous (Brideport as well) running the old Houston Veer formation.

    Class Dismissed. Test Friday.

A single wing type play is not THE SINGLE WING.I dont care how unbalenced it is 2 TE 3 TE whatever.. Running 46 out of a eye formation is not the SINGLE WING ...Teams do no run it anymore because it DOES NOT WORK..... Yes if you have LT back there it will work every now and again as a change of pace... Your references are referring back to the mid- 80's..

However with that being said I am glad you have educated me on what used to work in the mid 80's and 70's, 60's and 50's, and 40's....

  13. Fingers??? Peach Fuzz??? OP what kinda fetishes do you have down there.... I dont roll like that OP... I would agree with you Capone to a certain degree but I feel like those analogies are felt from the NFL through College and High School... Someone told me the 69 team ran one play.... There is no way in the world that would work today PERIOD.... I dont care if you have LT back there runnin the ball....Every now and again sure.... but not every play like you guys you to do... Maybe I am way off about 69 only runnin one play... But thats the Rumor...

  14. Old Pirate is ALL SMILES, OP says tell those fuzz face guys. Hey, ZP you are not as old as some of these old pirates, but Bridgeport had a spread offense with David Coates as QB. The Bridgeport team was extremely tough for several years and beat the 72 Pirates with Coach Hale and friends. OP remembers the Thomas boys, Steve & Doc who were recievers and Gary Rorex @ RB, there was a spread offense around in the day. David Coates went on to QB the Ole Miss. Rebels.

PLEASE............these fuzz faces are beginning to ruffle some old pirates grey hair. OH, well maybe all still have some hair. OP remembers this same kind of smack talk going on prior to that first old timers game when Danny Wilson was in SP. The youngons got a wake up call, and some from the sidelines. The old pirates whipped their tails that night and the game ended in a tie after Dale Gibson's 40 yd field goal attempt hit the cross bar as time ran out. The goober refs failed to mark the ball back in the center of the field after a pass to the left flat fell incomplete. The refs marked it on the left hash making a more difficult field goal. The attempt was backed up 15 yds for an unsportsman like penalty. Yes the refs were youngons, figure that out.

Hey, old pirates how many of you particpated in the PuntPass, & Kick contests. The fuzz faces couldn't out do the old pirates today with PP&K. OP says the youngons have learned to talk alot............. OP can remember tha hall of fame reflecting records for track. The youngons say, TRACK???????????????? whats that?????????? That is what old pirates did in the day. The fuzz faces probably never attempted a high jump, broad jump. OP can remember trck meets at the old field, that is where the softball field is today for the youngons. Jim Beene, Larry Phelps. Donny Phelps, Rusty Adcock, Johnny Reames. The kicking & passing done in the neighborhood yards of yesteryear have been replaced by the remote. You know the ones on your computers.

YES,THINGS HAVE CHANGED hurricaneditka, but not all for the better.

I am wondering do you have a fetish with peach fuzz???? You mention it a aweful lot in your post....OP your new nickname is PEACHFUZZ.... You probably cant even grow a beard HA....Your comments are behind on the times... If all of this is true , that is like saying that the old Colts with Unitus would DESTROY the Colts with Manning... You OLDer guys and your football memories have shortened as the years go by.... Its ok Ditka was even a little touchy on this topic because he admitted football even passed him by.... Things change, Its ok we all get old and one day I will be old and stubborn like you guys... But for know

  15. Phil Beene was the Principal in '69. But if he caught one of his players drinking a coke/pepsi you would have thought it was a bud!

Plus, some of the Pirates used to be able to play basketball in the off-season and were pretty darn competitive at it. There has always been some fast pirates around. Football has changed a lot, but its still about blocking and tackling.

Use the rules the '69 or '77 Pirates played by and these young kids would have a different attitude.

Lets see, from the beginning of time through the mid80s the Pirates used to throw the ball 5 or 6 times a game. Chris Ferrel through it a little more. How many times do they throw it now? Plus imagine if the old teams had the equipment and facilities these kids have.

You are right on about that...But they didnt have the facilities or equipment to use...Coaches didnt have a VCR to rewind and watch film the actually used film... There is alot that has changed , the basics stay the same, but alot has improved...

  16. Football is bred into these kids? You must be pretty young. Back in the ancient days noway could you drive around town and not see pick-up football games in every other yard. We had no computers, satellite Tv's, play stations, cell phones, etc. What we did have was a football, baseball, and a basketball. Most of the guys I played with walked or ran home after practice. The stands were packed with standing room only every Friday night. The game has changed as far as the schemes, but as High School players no way are the kids faster, bigger, stronger, or smarter. You are right about the weights though, we did our work-outs throwing hay into a truck or shaking out down lodge. I for one am proud of all the Pirates whether they won a state championship or not. To say that football today is more important than years past is quite a stretch. I really enjoyed the smarter comment... On my team alone we have doctors, engineers, Town leaders, computer scientists, heck Jim Beene was even a Rhode Scholar.

And you must be pretty old....Times have changed whether you have the knowledge to admit it or not...
