We had a great run this season with both teams. Unfortunately, we saw it come to an end in the first round this year. Congratulations to everybody remaining in the tournaments. We appreciate the sportsmanship and competition from everyone. 2010 will be remembered as the snowstorm year by most. Good Luck to everyone fighting for that elusive championship!!

The Columbia Central Lions are heading to Smyrna along with the Lady Lions! The Lions shot 3818 today to eliminate Chattanooga Central, 21-6. Al Jackson shot 729 with games of 247-244-238. Aaron Davidson shot 728 with games of 160-279-289 and Jr Delarosa had 234-200-255 for a 689 series. Geo Grandberry had 646, also. Waiting for the bracket now. Good Luck to everybody this weekend!

Congratulations on getting both teams there again. Columbia Central will have both teams there too. Our girls will meet if we can win our first match. We got White Station in the quarterfinals. See you Thursday!

Columbia Central girls punched their ticket to Smyrna with a 23-4 victory over Walker Valley this afternoon at Galaxy Lanes in Columbia. Blackman HS Girls defeated Soddy Daisy 22-5 in Chattanooga, also. Maybe a State Finals Rematch? There will be 6 other teams trying to prevent that!

I would be on a very short list of operators that would be in favor and willing to accomodate this. "Retired" is spot on with his reasons at most centers. There is such a small portion of a center's business that really care about the "sport" value of bowling. In Columbia, I chase bowlers when I mention "sport" and bowling in the same sentence. The other option would be make all high school bowlers use a plastic ball. Patterns are almost useless then, so shot-makers have an advantage. Then the oil question is minimized. jmo

Great post, Kyle. Too bad the award started after your HS career was over. You would have won it hands down for your performance and leadership, imo. What would CoachT be without a little drama each year, though. Kelly did a great job explaining it and the committee in many cases only has the paper in front of them and do not get to witness these youngsters in actual competition. I would like to see the vote take place on Thursday evening when the individual tournament is conducted, after the judges have observed the nominees actually bowl in competition. The presentation could take place at the completion of the individuals or done on Friday night at the same location as it is now. It would have more of a performance based winner if the judges saw all of the nominees bowling on the same condition at the same time with the same consequences at stake.

Columbia Central Boys and Girls won the Region 4 Championships! The Lady Lions won their 7th consecutive title with a 20-7 win over Blackman HS, and the Lions won a hard-fought 16-11 match with Lawrence County to win their 4th title. In the semi-finals, the Lions eliminated defending State Champion Smyrna, returning the favor from last season when Smyrna eliminated the Lions in the same round in their quest to defend the 2008 title. The points total was 19-8 and pinfall was 3849-3550. The Lady Lions also defeated Smyrna by a 23-4 count. In the other semi-final matches, Lawrence County boys eliminated La Vergne 21-6, and Blackman eliminated Spring Hill 18-9. The finals matches saw both Columbia squads fall behind 5-3, but fight back to take the second game of the boys" and girls" final 7-1 each and the boys championship came down to the final bowler's 10th frame before the match was decided. The Lady Lions took control in the final game building a lead from the 2nd frame on to claim the title. Good Luck to everybody at the state!

I understand the frustration of some of the posters here, but I am not sure everyone truly understands this award. The other Mr. and Miss Sports awards are awarded primarily on achievement in that sport while this award is based on wider achievements than just bowling. If it was just achievement, there would still be a dispute, imo. The present information is submitted by the coach of each team. The form is sent to each bowling coach in the state. The information requested includes GPA, bowling average in the bowler's home center and their scores in each additional center where they compete. Also requested is their average in any other leagues that they participate in during the current season. Public service and other activities is the final factor included on the form along with an area for the coach to add his/her comments on the bowler. The award is generated from the bowling proprietors in TN and a committee is formed to make the final decision. I am not sure of the criteria for deciding which proprietors are responsible for the final decision. I have been consulted about various bowlers when I did not have a bowler nominated in the category in past years. I was not consulted this season, but I must admit that I was surprised that Aaron Davidson from our Columbia Central team did not make the finals this year. He is a warrior on the lanes and has been in the top 4 averages in the state for all 3 years of his varsity years, so he/we have every reason to be upset at an omission. I was also surprised that Stephen Roberts did not make the list after winning the individuals last year. The previous year winner should have a head start on the field since they do it after the award is presented annually.

District 8 Tournament was January 11, 2010 at Ebonite's Galaxy Lanes in Columbia. Lawrence County boys emerged as the Champions with Columbia Central finishing second. Columbia Central Girls won their 7th consecutive District 8 Tournament Championship. Spring Hill finished second. The Central girls shot 3354 in the finals - a school and district record. Great job, girls! Region 4 Tournament next Monday @ Galaxy Lanes! Starts @ noon.

Congratulations to Christina and Stephen on their singles championships! I watched more of the girls competition since Chelsea Barton was in that field, but it takes a great deal of talent, patience and mental toughness to get through those 14 games. It is the best test in high school competition! Thanks to Commando Pride for the great comments. We work hard and not just on bowling, but on conduct and the way you present yourself as a team and individual. Respect is missing many times in vital parts of young people's lives and we teach it as well as bowling. We had a great run in a season that had a very difficult beginning. I am as proud of this group of young ladies as any I have had the pleasure to work with. They have a lot of heart but, in the end we were "out-womaned" by a great Hendersonville squad. We will be back!! Practice starts Monday!

Congratulations to Hardin County Girls and Smyrna boys on a great conclusion to their seasons! I had a death in my family so I had to miss the final day, but kept track of things by phone and the net. There was some great competition and comebacks. The Smyrna boys team had a very difficult road to the championship, but prevailed. Congrats!! Good luck to all of you preparing for next year!! Keep working hard!

We have had a hard working small group of girls that have peaked at the right time to get the job done. They rolled games of 1026-971-1099 for a 3096 series today in a sectional match today against Bradley Central. Thanks to all of our players and coaches and parents and other fans that showed up to cheer us on at the District, Regional, and Sectional Tournament and to our AD and everyone at CCHS!! Come to Smyrna and cheer us on like a man, Too Funny!

Thanks, Kyle. The only problem with the qualifying on sport is our season is on house conditions. The players that bowl on sport conditions have a little bit of an advantage and some of the centers that host HS teams do not support them with decent house conditions much less putting out a sport shot for practice purposes. If a kid can make the top 24 in his qualifying tournament, then he/she probably represents the best bowlers from that area. There may be an individual or two who under-perform, but the majority of the kids capable of winning the singles will survive a top 24 qualifying format. JMO and I will have a proposal to this effect at the tournament next week for any coaches that support it to sign. Good Luck to all of this year's qualifying athletes!!
