1. QUOTE(coacht @ Jun 6 2007 - 10:12 AM) 826472054It does add some excitement to the process. As far as the cost, most teams that make the state won't mind and they will possibly even save money since they will not know which sectional winner they will face the first round and will most likely not bother sending anyone to scout their next opponent. As a coach, I would love to make the Sunday drive to Murfreesboro after winning the sectional on Saturday night.

I agree..that would be the best drive in the world.

  2. A pitcher and catcher are the most important positions in softball. You do have to have a complete team to be competetive, but it all starts in the circle..same way it starts on the mound in baseball. The softball teams that are successful can slap hit, bunt, steal bases...not just it homeruns to win.

Monica Abbott is the most dominating softball pitcher ever in the college game. If you UT had not stranded double digit runners last night they would be champs right now. But even great pitchers like Abbott give up a run now and then she has only lost 4 games all season and won 50.

  3. Melton still basketball coach at LA

    By MAC McLEOD,

    OCN Sports

“Richard is our coach at Livingston Academy and will be staying with us. We have had some issues that we had to work through, but we feel those issues have been addressed and we are now ready to move forward.”

With that statement, Overton County Director of Schools Michael Gilpatrick dispelled rumors that have been running wild the past week that Livingston Academy head boys basketball coach Richard Melton had been terminated.

Apparently the word got out last Wednesday that Melton met with new Livingston Academy Principal Randy Hankins and came away with the impression that he had been fired. He even notified some of his players that he was terminated, and on Thursday, some players and parents met with Director Gilpatrick to discuss the issue.

“First let me say that Coach Melton was never terminated,” Gilpatrick said Monday afternoon, June 4. “I am the one who hires and fires, and I never fired Coach Melton, therefore, he’s not terminated.

“We have met with Coach Melton several times over the past months to discuss certain things, and hopefully we now have all that worked out and he knows what we expect of him as the head basketball coach at Livingston Academy.

“Coach Melton is a young coach, and from what we have seen of him over the past two years, he will be a successful coach. He’s passionate about the game and wants to do a good job. We appreciate that and try to understand what he is trying to do.

“Sometimes that passion has created some issues, but with maturity that will come with the job, things should work out for all concerned.”

Gilpatrick went on to add that Coach Melton’s ability has never been questioned, and his win-loss record will not be a factor in his employment at Livingston Academy.

“There has already been too much talking about this,” Gilpatrick added. “Perhaps everyone can learn something from this and put it behind us.

“Coach Melton and the team left this morning (Monday) for basketball camp, and we look forward to this year’s season. The team has been strong in the past two years, and maybe this year it will be even stronger.

“But we must not forget that our main goal here is education, and we want to graduate young people and improve test scores just as much as we want our athletic teams to win games.”

Overton County News was unsuccessful in attempts to reach Coach Melton for comment before press time.

  4. York Institute has had coaching shake ups in basketball. Bruce Winningham has stepped down as girls coach, being replaced by Tonya Storie and boys coach Ernie Winningham has stepped away and Derwin Wright(principal and football coach) has taken over, since there were no teaching postions available to bring someone new in.

It was a nasty collision from what I was told, both got shook up pretty good. Information I have is...catcher is going to have a big headache for a while but nothing major and the third baseman has a crack on a facial bone, believe around her eye. Both of these ladies play hard all the time. Good luck to both teams on Monday and make it an all 7A region final.

They both got shook up pretty good, but will be alright from what I have been told. Clay County has had an outstanding season to date. Would be great to see an all 7A region final.

  7. QUOTE(coacht @ May 4 2007 - 05:45 PM) 826451924Thanks.

For fans who may wonder where this request comes from, I have wrestled with the best way to handle this for several months. A recruiting camp for girls' basketball players was charging $150 per player and had 150 players come in, a total of $22,500. When asked to pay a $150 fee, they refused and accused me of trying to take advantage of young girls. While I have nothing against these camps, as long as they do what they say they will do, I felt that they should pay a fee if they are charging a fee. After all, if the camp doesn't do what it says then fans will associate that with CoachT.com, also. If the camp is free, so is the advertising.

I agree coach, people who run camps should not be ashamed to pay for advertising, especially since they are going to make so much off the exposure this site gives them.

  8. QUOTE(crazyvolfan @ May 2 2007 - 02:01 PM) 826450139Where will the tournament be played this year and on what days?

It's at Jackson County..and I think they are supposed to play Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday..at least.
