  1. There are money considerations here for a school that is already scrambling to cut payroll. Many late career, 30+ year McCallie faculty have already been offered early retirement. While I'm guessing Bubba will get a decent little raise, they'll still be filling two spots with one pay check.

  2. I smell an upset. Ensworth has been off for two weeks. Baylor drilled FR over the weekend. I say east v west, Baylor, McCallie, MUS and CBHS advance

Ensworth isn't going to lose. They are loaded, well coached, and the best team in DII-AA.

They were the best team in the Middle/East in football and they didn't make it to the finals. That's why it's an upset.

I doubt that Net-worth will lose, but if anyone could pull it off in this round it would be Austin Clark.

  3. I hear he is going to MBA next year.

MBA doesn't "let kids in for academic reasons" like Ensworth does, thus, having to actually qualify and meet the same standards as everyone else that chooses to apply, I don't think Orleans would be accepted.

The post you quoted was obviously a joke considering he is a senior. Also, posts like this are unwanted and unwelcome.

Check your split infinitives and that/who issues before claiming academic purity.

  4. Checking out the maps and have a quick question for the Nashville folks. I really hate the West End area traffic. Would cutting over the I65 on the 840 bypass and coming in Old Hickory Blvd be a better alternative?

Thanks for any help! Looking forward to a great game and seeing you this pm! For those who might miss me, I'll be in blue!

It sort of depends on what time you're coming into town. I have often done the 840 option, but I'm not really sure which is faster. For the most part, if you do I-24 to 440 you're going against the flow of rush hour traffic. If you do this, I would get off at the West End exit and muscle the rest of the way through on West End/Harding/Hwy100. If you try to do I-40 all the way to Bellevue, it often turns into a parking lot from 5:00-6:00.

840 is definitely the prettier way to go and maybe less congested overall.

  5. Ensworth beat MBA last night by four, what are the potential seeds for the tournament now?

IF MBA beats BA, Baylor beats Webb

    1 - Father Ryan vs. 8/9 - BGA/Webb Winner

    2 - Ensworth vs. 7 - McCallie

    3 - MBA vs. 6 - JP II

    4 - Baylor vs. 5 - BA

  6. Cut & paste from NACA website:

"Every graduate receives a DIPLOMA. However, a student is considered a high school student in a particular subject whenever he begins work in PACE 107 on all subjects. We do NOT accept a student on the basis that graduation is determined by achievement, not chronology. Our program is designed to enable a student to complete his graduation requirements earlier than others. Time is not the factor-learning is. Therefore, students remain in the curriculum until they have completed the prescribed course of study. The parents and staff agrees on a reasonable course of study for each student, determining what minimum requirements are to be met for graduation. Parents and students should understand that procrastination in PACE completion merely adds additional days to the projected graduation date."

  7. QUOTE(bigwes68 @ Jan 14 2007 - 11:32 AM) 826331556[/snapback]

There is no pivot foot and there is no dribble on a throw-in. It's not illegal to move one or both feet, jump, etc., just as long as part of one of the thrower's feet is within the three-foot-wide space. And while players are limited on lateral movement during a throw-in, most of them don't realize that they can move backwards as far as they want if space allows.

And if the thrower violates by moving completely outside of his/her three-foot space, it is not traveling and officials should not give the signal for traveling. It is simply a violation, there is no specific signal for it. The accepted method for signaling a throw-in violation is to simply point at the spot, verbalize the violation and award the ball to the other team.

Thanks for clarifying. That change slipped by me. BTW, we still have a jump ball after each made basket, don't we?

  8. After made shot: run of the baseline.

Any dead ball (other than a stoppage after a bucket): pivot foot as is the case inbounds.

Not always enforced with consistency, especially if the inbounder doesn't move from his basic spot.

I know for sure that you cant move both feet after a dead ball when inbounding, it's just like a basic traveling call based on whether a shot was made or not

  9. Here's a question for those more in the know than I am. Any chance that Flatt's retirement timing, followed by immediate consideration of another opportunity, has something to do with the renewal of the BA v. TSSAA case in front of the Supreme Court?

I'm assuming that my first thought is more on the mark, in that Coach Flatt has nothing more to prove or accomplish in his tremendous career. But then the court case rears its ugly head again and I remember how Coach Flatt stepped away from football at BA the last time the lawyers were having their fun.

Please understand that I realize that I am so far distanced from specifics that at best all I'm doing is blowing mildly fragrant smoke out of my hind quarters. Anyone have any informed thoughts about this?

  10. Guys, I am not trying to stir up the pot or step on anyone's toes but I do have a couple of questions about the previous posts. First, it seems every coach's name brought up that is from a public school is shot down with the statement" is he ready to coach in D II". How is coaching there different from DI? The field is still 100 yards long, and you can only put 11 on the field at a time. (Kidding) Really it is still high school football. Alot of Public School coaches would be great fits and be successful no matter the school. The things that make a coach great have nothing to do with the money, status etc. but more to do with work ethic, knowledge and relationships with school community and parents. Second question do you guys think McCallie will post or open the job up or will they follow the Brentwood Academy trend and contact coaches they are interested in?

There is indeed a fair amount of unfortunate cockiness amongst the DII folk, as well as unfortunate resentment toward many exceptionally good people who work at the DII level. But there is really more in common between the goals of DI and DII schools and their athletic programs than there are the elements that we let divide us. It's about doing the right thing for the development of high school kids.

That sermon out of the way, McCallie will most likely conduct an "exhaustive national search and seriously consider many extremely attractive unsolicited applicants." Then they'll go after the candidate(s) that they already decided they had wanted to get.

  11. I agree...I'm sure coach Rankin will be happy to play McCallie. My point was that technicallly, McCallie's upper school is really a 2A school, 3A at best, in terms of enrollment. McCallie has about 890 students in grades 6-12. If you just count the upper school (grades 9-12) they're not a big school at all.

Correct, but remember you really need to double McCallie's enrollment since they're all boys.

  12. I've been unactive for a few years as a coach in the Chattanooga area, but over the past decade-plus, there have been some very good umpires in the association.

I know I'll leave someone out, and a few on my list have retired, but these were always consistent, fair, and hard-working.

    Harley Grant

    Ron Priddy

    Eddie Brown

    Chambers

The Guy Who Yells Out EVERY Pitch, ball or strike.

Others, whose names I forget, were very solid. You know who you are. You could always tell who the umps were that were having fun on the job, without trying to be the focal point of the event.

Yeah, there are always those in every profession who are in it for the wrong reasons, those who don't work at their craft hard enough to stay where they need to be, but on balance there was never any need to start any full-scale, general railing.

If you are a player, coach, or a fan, and you enter the "arena" thinking that you're fixin' to get screwed, then you're already a bit defeated, yourself.
