  1. Interesting sequence of events late in the game. The last foul was a 'borderline' play. The official did not have the best look at the play but put air in the whistle and 'took it to the table'. Not sure that they really had their "A game" Nice win by Upperman. This will help their confidence and prepare them for the postseason enviroment.
  2. Purple, If a player has gathered themselves in an attempt to get a shot off and then gets fouled , we should score the bucket. Too many times I see officials waving off the shot and calling a non-shooting foul when by rule the shooter is entitled the continuation. I have not seen an NBA rule book in some time but the last time I did look there is no difference in the wording of the "shooting foul" criteria. I hear fans yelling "This isn't the NBA." My personal oppinion is that the NBA officials do a great job of interpreting the rule and understanding its meaning. I'm sure they have lots of training material and guideline plays that allow them to be 'on the same page' thats why they are so consistent. Its unfortunate that the TSSAA does not offer the local associations more 'training material'. The officials pay in lots of money to the state and the amount of training that most of the new guys get is very minimal. I will say that some associations around the state have made their own training videos /guideline plays and share it with the association. These videos assist in getting everyone on the same page. Thats all I will say about that subject.
  3. Riverdaleman, I want a fan to show me where the "over the back" rule is in the rule book. **Hint - Its not in there I go see some pee wee basketball occasionally and watch the high school kids officiating and giving the over the back "signal" (both arms raised straight up with bent down wrists) I just chuckle. However, I do admire them for taking on the officiating 'craft' /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
  4. Yes one foot does qualify as "being in the lane" As far as area of responsibility, its the lead officials (official under the basket) primary area of responsibility. The Center or 'slot' offical has secondary coverage for this as well. You will probably never see the trail official calling three seconds. As far as how this is officiated varies by crew. If you call a couple of them early , it does tend to cut down on the physical play of post players trying to get the low block position.
  5. Greetings RDman !!! Hope you had a nice holiday. 3 seconds rule by the rule book Rule 9 Section 7 Art 1 - A player shall not remain for three seconds in that part of his/her free-throw lane between the end line and the farther edge of the free-throw line while the ball is in control of his/her frontcourt. Art 2 - The three second restriction applies to a player who has only one foot touching the lane boundary. The line is part of the lane. All lines designating the free throw lane, but not lane-space marks and neutral zone marks, are part of the lane. Art 3 - Allowance shall be made for a player who, having been in the restricted area for less than three seconds, dribbles in or moves immediately to try for a goal. In other words for Article 3 - If a guy/girl is posting up in the lane for 2 seconds and then receives the ball, the three second violation is ignored if they are going to make a move to the basket. That is the way officials have been instructed to rule.
  6. Why was the officiating bad ??? Just because it was not to your liking does not necessarily mean it was bad. Give me some valid reasons , don't just say they were horrible and leave it at that.
  7. Nice job by the officiating crew tonight !!! GB - Why does it seem that when things do not go Upperman's way things tend to escalate emotionally for the Bee's ? It happened last year and you and I had a similar discussion on how the "officiating crew" prompted it by "letting the game get out of hand" I agree that it usually stems from a small percentage of fans (<1%) - but every year ??????
  8. congRatulatIonS IS In oRdeR foR a veRy SpecIal 'offIcIal'. you know who you aRe and It could not have happened to a nIcerR guy !!
  9. The clock operator blew it and then the officials compounded the situation by blowing it too. Minnesota uses instant replay for all the state tournament games, TSSAA should consider doing the same.
  10. Nice job by the crew in this game, tough game to work but it was a great atmosphere. Regarding the continuation play, by rule, I think the official 'nailed it'. Keep in mind - the rule book says that if a player has started his shooting motion, he is granted a two shot foul or the 'and one' if the ball goes down. On this play, the kid had definetly "gathered" himself and had begun his shooting motion. Too many officials don't really understand the concept behind the rule and I see guys not rewarding the offensive player with free throws. There were a few mechanical issues that they could work on - (had a long switch in the third quarter) where C should have stayed opposite the table, but overall a solid effort. Good job guys !!
  11. Lets just say this, I have more sense than I have hair and Im older than dirt !!!
  12. Thanks Dragon, the video would not play for me but I thought the whole situation sounded unusual.
  13. Wow !! Coach Flynn and staff (had to throw in the staff part for my friend Devil) have got these guys motivated. They played an outstanding game. Congrats to Coach Bibb and PC - you guys had a nice run this year. The officiating crew also did a very nice job in the game. I didn't get a chance to get in and talk to you guys after the game, but if you read this, I thought you guys did a good job. Hope you had a safe trip home.
  14. Personally, I like the concept of staying tableside, however, I see too many officials getting right over in the coaches hip pocket during free throws. Only go over there if asked and never initiate the conversation.
  15. Riverdaleman, the mechanic in the NCAA was changed this year for the calling official to go 'opposite table' and the perception I get from the guys working at that level is that they do not like it. It takes away their opportunity to 'communicate' with the coach and if you will notice , LOTS of guys working college games will wave their partner off of a switch after a foul so they can stay 'tableside' and talk to the coach about what they had. Word on the street says that this mechanic in the NCAA will be changed back next year so the calling official will once again stay 'tableside'.
  16. Bill, it just happens that way sometimes. One guy gets stuck under a basket and can never seem to get out of there. Long runs in the game with no whistle magnify this too. Sometimes, during a dead ball (time out or between quarters usually) an official that has been under Team A's basket all night will make it a point to not start out the quarter under A's basket, however, after one trip down court and one whistle he may be stuck under there again. It all depends on the sequence of plays. Hope this helps.
  17. Ernie, I want to get me some of those shoes that all the kids are wearing now with wheels in the bottom of the shoe. That would make for some interesting conversation from the fans. I can hear it now - Stang and Bill would call me 'roller ref'. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
  18. Stang, we tried to get some models from CK to join the officiating ranks but they all said they were not availalbe. The only guy interested said he loved playing with balls of all kinds. I think I filed his # away - WAY AWAY !!! Maybe you could host a tryout for us ?
  19. Bill, after the season is over - the last thing I want to think about is basketball. I generally take about 1.5 months off until the camp season start (june-july) I do continue to get my copy of Referee Magazine during this time period and I go back and look at my 'game log' that I kept during the season (officials should keep a game log)and try to get into some rules discussions with some fellow officials to keep me sharp and thinking during the off-season. Before the season starts, (usually during the summer) the NFHS will release the points of emphasis for the upcoming season. For the most part, these can be the same year after year (I think cleaning up post play has been on there for the last 5 years). They will also discuss rules changes (White Home Jersey's was on there this year) and anything the rules committee feels that the officials need to do a better job of addressing in the upcoming season.
