  1. Maybe the job was never offered to hooper. I guess they were going after someone with high school experience to try and build a legit feeder program for oakland high. Either would have been a good hire, but I heard hooper was never going to be in the mix for oakland middle.

  2. It will def be interesting to see who in fact gets the jobs. You have to remember the deal with the Oakland Middle job is that will be Oakland's first chance at a fedder school. If Decker gets the job, I think it would be a good hire for Oakland. He must know what it takes to win at the high school level with him being at Siegel and I hear he is a good guy with the players. Who ever it is will have to work closely with Coach Wright. That would be ironic, a Siegel guy working closely with Wright at his feeder school. HA

  3. True with Oakland Middle not having any tradition yet, but the Oakland name certainly rings a bell. And if you look at the zoning lines, it basicly splits the central kids in half. Over in the Patterson area which is usually where the better athletes come from, there are only a few streets in that area going to Buch, all the others are going to Oakland. Buch sure is close to riverdale for their kids to go to Oakland.

  4. I have been hearing rumors about the Oakland Middle coach as well. I heard he is in fact a high school coach but the name I heard doesnt start with a C. If the name I heard is correct and if you were at Murphy Center the last couple of days you saw him!!

  5. Here I am Southeast21!!

Let me start off by saying hats off to Melrose. They have a heck of a team and I predict they will be holding a gold ball here in about 48 hours. Jones is a he!! of a player. In my opinion he is the best player on the team. I honestly forgot Adonis Thomas was even on the floor. As for the comment about "where was Hammonds?" Where was adonis? They both sat on the bench for the majority of the first half in fould trouble yet Hammonds ended with 15 pts and Adonis didn't score. The kid is good dont get me wrong, but UT or UK potential...good joke!!!

19-1 in the first quarter did it for Siegel. I believe the scoring for the rest of the game was like 57-51 Melrose or something like that and Siegel out rebounded Melrose for the game. They have a great team, but the best to ever come from Memphis!!!! PLEASE. I have seen some Ridgeway and White Station teams in the past 6 years that were way better than this Melrose team. Again, Melrose will win a gold ball this year, but they def aren't the best to ever come out of Memphis.

Siegel made a great run at it. Let me ask you this Melrose fans... If you take Jones and Thomas off of that teams for 20 games this season, do you honestly see yourselves where you are now? Siegel put 41 pts, 19 reb, and 12 ast on the bench for 20 games this season and got here. I would say thats a heck of an accomplishment!!! God job Stars. Way to stay together and never quit!!

  6. true. Im not from Rutherford county so I like the idea of multiple middle schools and high schools. that way you really find out who can play and who can coach. Not taking anything away from ron couey but when Central was the only middle school, how much coaching did he have to do. LOL at the Blackman comment. I hope Kyle Turnham lands on his feet he really does know a lot about the x's and o's of basketball

True. Turnham does know a lot about the X's and O's of basketball however thats only about 30% of coaching. If you cant relate to the kids and get them to buy into what you are doing, it doesnt matter how much you know.

As for the mighty Couey duo and coaching, didn't they get bounced in the first round of the district?

  7. Memphis basketball should be referred to as the MBA. They trade players and make deals like the NBA. No coaching is involved. Just recruiting. Notice all the talk is about who has the best players. Just recruit 7 D1 players and you don't have to coach. Good philosophy. People talk about the private vs public school recruiting... Maybe they should look at memphis public schools. The residents of murfreesboro just better hope that new central magnet school doesn't start sucking all of the athletes out of the schools!! Just watch... It will happen.

  8. Contrary to what you believe boroballer, very few Central players go to Riverdale. The majority of their players over the past several years have gone to Siegel and Oakland and those teams seem to be doing just fine. I can only think of 2 that are at Riverdale right now that played at Central. And am certain that only 1 from this years team will be going there. So I wouldn't say the kids coming out of Central weren't well coached. It may just be Riverdale's fault! lol

You are very right on the Riverdale coaching comment. I do believe however that there are more than 2 kids from central that now play for Riverdale. And from watching central play in the past, they should be beating teams by 40 and 50...not 12-15!!!

  9. http://tssaa.org/Handbook/handbook.pdf

    TSSAA/TMSAA By Laws:

Head coaches in football, basketball, baseball, girl's softball, and track and field must be full time employees or a retired educator. A non-faculty coach may serve as head coach of one of the preceeding sports if they have been an assistant coach at a TSSAA/TMSAA member school for at least 5 yeras and have completed the ASEP Coaches Education Program and completed the TSSAA Online Coaches Training Program.

  10. Its not worth arguing over but again to be a middle school coach you do not have to be a teacher. I know of no less than two head middle school coaches (on paper and in action and every way you can think) who are not teachers. I take that back I know of three and one of them does nothing but coach and is the AD and works outside the school. The other two are substitute teachers.

In high school its different. From my understanding you have to teach or have no less than 5 years of experience. I have heard from from multiple sources and read it just last week in the rule book..

Again, there has to be a school faculty member on the bench at every athletic event. With that being said, a teacher could "coach" a team but simply sit on the bench and let the volunteer asst coach. In my opinion, Wright will not let this happen nor will the Oakland boosters. This is their first chance at a feeder program, they will surely get someone who knows what it takes to win and actually teach these young kids basketball.

Oakland is not trying to be like Riverdale in regards to Central being their main feeder. At Central they lived on the fact that they had 1000x more talent than everyone else. Then the kids got to Riverdale not knowing anything about how to play at that level, and go 7-21 every year. Won't happen with Oaklands program.

  11. I still think its funny how these west tn people take a team that played a terrible game in the middle of november and say they "have seen them play". If that was the case, I saw Syracuse get beat by a DIII school. They are terrible and will get blasted in the tourney!! Dumb. I also saw Melrose get beat 2x by Memphis Central who Siegel absolutely demolished last year.

  12. Let be honest here. I am by no means a memphis fan, but english doesnt stand a chance against joe jackson.

Please allow me to explain to you all how this game is going to go. White Station will be up 9 or 10 at then end of the 1st quarter. White Station will blow it open in the 2nd quarter and columbia will quit. People are calling the Melrose Siegel game a blowout....Here is your blowout game people!!

  13. Its not Bias my friend when Melrose is one of the best teams in the country. West Tennessee or not. Will we still be idiots if Melrose not only blows out Siegel, but wins the State Championship? Probably, because we know nothing about basketball? Psh whatever there are two different types of talents. Melrose's and Siegel's are NOT CLOSE. Call me a bias idiot, as much as you want still won't change who's on Melrose's team and who's on Siegel and the LIKELY outcome of the game.

    GO MEMPHIS.

Maybe rutherford county should be more like memphis. we will get rid of the zoning districts and just form an all-star team every year. Lets take siegel, add hughes and adams from oakland, and dixon and dial from lavergne, and craig from riverdale. then we would be more like memphis teams.

  14. From an outsiders perspective it is a lateral move. From someone who knows the area and the athletes it is not.

Blackamn has tons of athletes in the schools as can be seen in what Shadowens has done with football there. The freshmen basketball teams are always strong at blackman as well. (im not saying that good freshmen=good varsity)

The problem with Blackman basketball has been this... The kids couldnt stand Turnham so they quit. And the ones that stayed around didnt want to play for him, they just wanted to play basketball. I am by no means a blackman fan, but if the right person gets this job, they will have plenty of athletes to choose from. not saying they are going to be a state contender, but they could def make a run in the district/region.

By the way, my insider info tells me that the job is Kevin Woodson's to turn down. He has been spotted at numerous Blackman events the past few weeks.

  15. From everything I hear Couey is trying to leave. I think the key here is if he can find some where to go. If not then he will stay. He is after all a PE teacher. The only PE jobs I have seen open are at middle schools and I doubt he wants to drop down.

As for coaching, there has to be a school faculty member on the bench of every athletic event. However, Oakland Middle is not going to hire a non-faculty member to coach there 1st ever true feeder program. Wright knows too much about basketball to let some AAU coach try to come in and be a volunteer coach at his feeder school. Who are the candidates for the job anyways?

  16. I'm just having a hard time seeing Siegel getting beat that bad.. They have loads of talent, and if they get hot..... It could happen.

I'll put it this way, Kerry or Levon would not start for Melrose this year. Melrose is unbelievably good and you'll see. I saw Siegel with both of their studs playing at full strength and Liberty won that game by like 10 points. Liberty played Melrose and lost by around 30 if that tells you anything.

Here is my only problem. People are talking about how they have seen Siegel play. Everyone is referencing the Liberty Tech game that was played on Nov. 21. That for one might have been the worst game Siegel had ever played. And do you really think a team is the same now as they were in November? That is people talking who dont know basketball.

I'm not saying that Siegel is going to win here nor am I saying they are gonna lose, but I do remember a very young Siegel team busting #1 ranked Antioch right in the kisser the first round a cpl of years ago.

Melrose is good, but come on people, Siegel isnt playing Kansas here.
