  1. Does the grind stop for Spring Break?

NOPE!!!   - - -   Fight Night at Blackman TONIGHT!

Last week, we had at least two state champs and easily a dozen state medalists!  Come out and get some live matches in against some great competition.

The Blackman wrestling building is located behind Blackman Middle School.  Starting promptly at 5!

  2. Congrats to all those who went to the NHSCA!  It was nice to see a ton of kids repping Tennessee.  We still have a long way to go, but getting up there and competing is a huge step in the right direction.

If you are interested, here are some numbers and stats.  If I missed something, let me know.

There were only 5 All-Americans out of 81 TN wrestlers and by my count 18 of the 81 wrestlers that competed had a winning record.  They are as follows:

Sr 126    CHRIS DEBIEN - Cleveland High School 5-0 (1st)

    So 285   SAMMY EVANS - Alcoa 4-1 (3rd)

    So 113   GAVIN HUTCHENS - Pigeon Forge 8-3 (6th)

    So 285   NICHOLAS BOYKIN – Riverdale 5-2 (7th)

    Jr 195     BENJAMIN STACEY - Father Ryan 4-3 (8th)

    So 106   TJ HICKS – Bradley 5-2

Jr 138     MICHAEL MURPHY - Baylor School 4-2

So 106   CHRISTIAN SIMPSON - Father Ryan 4-2

    So 113   GABRIEL ELKIN – MBA 4-2

So 120   RYAN MCELHANEY - Bradley Central 4-2

Fr 106    CALVIN MARTIN - William Blount High 3-2

Jr 182     BRETT BROWN - Bradley Central High 3-2

So 126   KNOX FULLER - Bradley Central HS 3-2

So 126   COLTON LANDERS - Cleveland High School 3-2

So 145   MATTHEW SELLS - Blackman High 3-2

So 145   DREW NICHOLSON - Christian Brothers 3-2

Sr 160    MIKE BINNS - WILSON CENTRAL 3-2

    Sr 170    MICHAEL LONG - CAK 3-2

    Their combined record was 71-35

We had 10 wrestlers that went 2-2

We had 26 wrestlers that went 1-2

We had 27 wrestlers that went 0-2

Congrats to EVERYONE who went up and competed.  Our kids are getting better!!

Congrats again to Chris Debein!!  He wrestled some awesome matches!

  4. No matter what, losing the athletes that Blackman has lost was going to take a toll this upcoming season.  The whole defense from 2013 and nearly the whole offense from 2014.  Looking at last year's roster, I only see 6 or maybe 7 kids who had much playing time at all last year.

I think Watson will do a great job providing he gets things back to normal quickly.  Any other coaches leaving?

  5. I would think that a good argument could be presented to the city/state government to compel the folks at Municipal to offer the venue at a very deep discount.  The parking revenue, downtown hotel room rentals and restaurant business alone would certainly merit strong consideration.

  6. So you wouldn't say anything to the girls except hey life goes on. Let's get ready for next year.

You tell them that you made a terrible decision and that you are sorry that they have to assist in paying for your mistake and lapse of judgement.  Its a tough but valuable lesson for them all.

  7. I think the tournament has gotten better and better at the Ag Center. I haven't heard one kid complain about the venue Except for the fact that there is not a good warm up area. In Iowa and PA, people bring their families to watch the tournament because they have been involved in wrestling all their lives. Average Tennessean could care less about going to see wrestling. Until that changes, we can't compare ourselves to big wrestling states.
