  1. I believe we will have plenty of HS coaches that will continue to work with off season clubs and National teams for the right reasons. Guys that will help anyone get better without worrying about how the process helps or hurts recruiting.
  2. Interesting reason why you believe HS coaches wouldn't want to coach offseason teams anymore. Could also be that those coaches would lose a transfer advantage themselves.
  3. All these HS athletes would be ineligible for a year even without a coaching link. You still can't just transfer to a new school because you all want to be together.
  4. Link them all. The idea of the rule is to curb transfers of HS athletes.
  5. This rule would not only cover upcoming 9th graders from TN middle schools. Out of state kids moving to TN with a "coaching link" would be affected too. Some states allow kids to play varsity HS sports in 7th grade. Kentucky is one of those states that allows 7th graders to play HS sports at all schools. But this particular rule seems to want to curb transfers by kids who have already played HS sports. Including club coaches would definitely have that curbing affect. Including club coaches in that definition might actually increase the numbers of kids participating in off season clubs taking place at another school. I believe most HS coaches would be more willing to recommend their kids to freestyle/greco and other offseason clubs at other schools if they didn't have to worry about recruiting.
  6. But a definition of the word "coach" is still not defined for us. Until it is then I guess assumptions can be made. Assumptions now can cause a kid to miss a whole year of practice and competition.
  7. Parents of some middle schoolers are going to have to figure out these rules because some kids will already have an athletic record in the 7th grade. "Loophole" probably wasn't the best term for me to use earlier. That time between 8th and 9th grade is when most everyone already changes schools.
  8. We don't really know what the definition of a "coach" is here. Would club and middle school coaches that feed predominantly one high school program be included in the "coaches link"? Does TMSAA=TSSAA? We just do not know these answers yet.
  9. They are not saying that kids from outside the school can't use the facilities. They are just saying the kids can't then transfer if there is a "coaching link" without penalty. It appears there is even a loophole between 8th and 9th grade for transfers and moves to happen even with a coaches link. You will still have transfers with this rule but it's going to force more to happen between 8th and 9th grade. Here's the complete rule again, but the loophole for MS/youth kids is the last part. Legislative Council Voted to Approve the Proposed Addition to Article II, Section 13 (Ineligible Transfer Students): e. If a student with an athletic record transfers into a new school where an “athletic coaching link†existed in the past 12 months, that student is ineligible for 12 months at all levels in the specific sports where a link was present. Links include (1) attendance at an individual camp (and then transferring); (2) playing on non-school (independent) teams (and then transferring to that coach’s school); (3) transferring into a school where a former coach has just been hired; and (4) transferring into a school where a former or current personal trainer or strength and conditioning coach is employed. This rule does not apply if the student moves to his/her new school after completion of the highest ending grade at his/her previous school.
  10. If the move happened between 8th and 9th grade there appears to be no issues if coming from around 99% of public schools. If it happened after having an athletic record and no "coaching link" I would say the answer is yes also.
  11. Nobody wants to give input on this one. Haha
  12. The definition of coach also needs to be determined when speaking of a "coaching link". Can only actual TSSAA coaches be part of a coaching link? Or can club coaches operating in school facilities be lumped into the definition?
  13. Durdon, I'm not so sure this statement is correct "if you move then you are eligible even if there is a coaches link". The wording of the new rule seems to show a move with a coaching link is ok if it's after the final highest grade for a school. For most public schools that is between 8th and 9th grade. It doesn't cover other situations so this may be the only time allowed without penalty. If they really want to curb transfers for sports then they would include physical moves to the coaching link. It's vague, so at this time we do not know for sure if physical moves are covered or not. I'm sorry. Baylor already proved my point.
  14. The financial aid related rule does not go into affect until 2017-2018. Weight training/conditioning rule starts October 1st of 2015. Not sure about the others.
  15. The more I look at the new transfer rule I'm beginning to think even a "geographical" move could involve the "coaching link". But it still would only involve kids with an athletic record.
  16. TDArtist, The new bylaw is worded only to affect "a student with an athletic record". So it's only talking about kids who have already played high school sports. Kids with an athletic record would be affected if they transferred to a school with a "coaching link". The last statement below seems to indicate that a "coaching link" makes no difference in a situation with an actual move made in between school years though. It may be talking about the normal end of middle school and beginning of high school. Here's the wording from TSSAA: Legislative Council Voted to Approve the Proposed Addition to Article II, Section 13 (Ineligible Transfer Students): e.
  17. I'm involved with feeder programs for a public school, so I was concerned how the proposals affect public schools. I may be wrong, but this is my take on some of the new approved proposals. -The "coaching link" proposal only pertains to kids with an "athletic record". To me that means a kid already has to have participated in high school varsity sports to be affected. So clubs, open mats, fight nights are fine for all unless someone transfers after already having an "athletic record". -The eligibility zone proposal was struck down. So magnet schools, STEM type Academy schools and open zone school system kids can still transfer before the start of 9th grade with no penalty. -Schools can have as many non-faculty coaches as they want. -The Weight Training/Conditioning proposal takes affect October 1, 2015. Only students who are enrolled and in regular attendance at the school may participate during the school year. So the summer time is Ok I guess. I'm not sure this could prevent weight lifting/conditioning as part of an AAU or USA program. -Non-faculty coaches with relatives on the team is fine as long as there is no tuition. -TSSAA coaches can still work with middle schoolers/elementary kids in an AAU/USA type club because the kid would only be punished if he already has an athletic record. I may be wrong but thats how I look at some of these changes.
  18. Five of the proposals passed. The proposal concerning changing the eligibility rules for some middle school transfers in open zones was denied. The council did not take action on a measure that would have defined financial aid as any loan program, grant program, educational foundation or similar program that is established or administered by a school official for an athlete or an athlete's family. http://www.tennessean.com/story/sports/2015/09/01/live-coverage-tssaa-legislative-council-vote/71467148/ http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/sports/preps/story/2015/sep/01/tssaa-vote-could-lead-most-private-schools-out-public-school-league/322962/ http://www.knoxnews.com/sports/prepextra/tssaa-vote-alters-landscape-of-high-school-sports_56914030
  19. Today is the day these proposals are supposed to be voted on.
  20. This link addresses the decision reached back in July. It states TSSAA would have 2 months after that decision to work out "tweaks" to their bylaws. The proposals at the beginning of this thread appear to be the tweaks being voted on Tuesday. http://www.tennessean.com/story/sports/high-school/2015/07/16/tssaa-public-private-split-vote/30217309/
  21. It looks like it may affect many schools. It could change the way many programs are currently doing business. Open enrollment counties and school systems with "STEM" Academies could possibly be affected greatly. There's a lot of questions. How would it affect "magnet" schools? How would it affect off season clubs, open mats and "fight nights"?
  22. What does everyone think about these proposals? http://www.dnj.com/story/sports/2015/08/28/tssaa-proposal-move-schools-division-ii/71292810/
