  1. Htv do u have or have anyway of getting the all time series record for the Powell karns rivalry?
  2. ]Hunter is no doubt a great kid and as others have said his presence in the locker room will be sorely missed, if nothing else. As for the above bickering, I know that this board isn't the place for it so I'll say my piece and move on. I, personally, have a problem with you, footballdad, saying that you "coached" a lot of the kids playing for Powell right now. I would argue that those kids just happened to be on the team that you hijacked to promote your own son's open recruiting. And in doing so also probably hindered Hodge's development as a quartback when he should have been a two year starter for the middle school team... Not that he would have been running the high school's offense and defense because you decided you knew better than Coach Lowe and Coach Wilks. But I digress, I know that my son and his friends are still pretty burnt up that they lost to karns last year in freshman ball (their only loss of the year). Since there are a ton of sophomore playing I would say that could tend toward a very motivated and focused panther football team on friday night. Things looked to be clicking offensively for Powell last week and I am 1000% confident that coach Hawkins and coach wilks will have the defensive secondary more prepared this Friday night. Should be a close game but I see Powell winning it by making a play late it the fourth quarter. Does anyone have the all time series record on this game? I know this is a pretty heated rivalry so I was just wondering what those numbers look like.
  3. Let's talk about some facts then. AB went to Powell middle school but as far as I know he lived in the central zone when he played for CHS. It's well documented that Dada wanted to come to powell but there was conflicting interest between his two parents. Huber came to Powell because the coaching staff at Central wasn't giving him a fair shake and because he came to Powell and ONLY because he came to Powell where the coaches have a knack for getting their kids recruited is he where he is today. Not to say Baron didn't earn it but had he stayed at Central he would not be where he is today. Lee transferred because he was kicked off the basketball team at Central. Daryle has strong Powell ties as he graduated from PHS and once Lee was dismissed from the CHS basketball team for missing a practice to hang out with his girlfirend at the time, the move made sense to the family. On the class note. The Central fans chanted "alcoholc" at Lee Smith during his SR year in the game at Central. As has been stated, boys will be boys and trash talk is going to happen. As for last years mixed freshman and jv game the game was to be played with no JRs at all on the field and Central sent several JRs over and they played in the game. The game was set up because Central "did not have enough freshmen to field a freshman team." Regardless Powell beat Centrals mix of Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors with onnly fresh and soph. Just wanted to add in some facts from this end.
  4. I could understand that, and I'd heard that about Coach Stevens as well. I was just curious because I knew that coach Jeff Hunter was allowed to coach the freshman basketball team at powell without holding a teaching position (I assume because he was into teaching for so long.) I wondered if that was possible for Larry as well. You're certainly right about SD (and Powell for that matter) getting a good draw in the new re-classification, and I believe that Clark will do a great job there, although I wonder how the fan base will respond to him getting in the I and giving it to his best athlete 40 times a game. Anyway, do you know what rule allowed Coach Hunter to coach the freshman before Coach Dinkins took over that team.
  5. I think coach Duncan will do a really good job at SD. I remember when SD had Kenny Harper back in I guess it was 02 and Coach Duncan was still at Powell, and there was a heck of a game between Derke Milligan's Panthers and the Harper led Cherokees. HTV, is there any chance that Stevens could join Duncan's staff at SD. I know they have had a long relationship and Stevens served as Duncan's OC for a long time until Duncan left to become AD and Stevens was promoted to HC. It will be interesting to see what Coach Duncan can do with the exceptional skill kids that SD puts on the field year in and year out, and I look for Clark to instill discipline into a program that has been missing it sorely. That week 0 game is going to be interesting for sure.
  6. Congrats to Kier and to Devin from Powell on making the list. I really thought the panthers might get one more on defense, either Cardio, Phillips, or Barnes. All had outstanding years and led the Panthers to their best season in recent memory. I got the chance to see Kitzmiller and Fletcher at the South Maryville game their JR years. Both those kids can play some ball. I was especially impressed with Fletcher, hard nosed tailback who really stuck it up in there well. I thought Coach Carter kinda got away from what got them there against Maryville that year and just tried to rely on Curt too much. I'm a firm believer that Knoxville football is a cut above NET football, but for sure, Fletcher could start for the majority of the teams in this area from what I saw that night. And from everything that I heard out of that area the Beadle kid and the Davenport kid had great great years so congrats to those guys as well. As for Barnes, according to Prepxtra.com he recorded 92 total hits (54 solo and 38 assists) as well as 7 sacks and 2 interceptions...for a defensive end that is an incredible year. Further, not that voters could have considered this, but Barnes plays in Powell's 3-3-5 stack defense which makes it a little bit tougher to make plays for a defensive lineman, but I'm sure that all the kids that made it were well deserving. I'm just trying to get Barnes a little pub. Watch out for the Stone kid from Clinton next year he's going to be special next year and that team will have plenty of success to get them the press coverage too. Oh and lastly, the Revis kid from Rhea County can really play as well, I'm a little surprised that his teammate (don't know his name but i believe he committed to MTSU) is a physical freak. Huge kid who moves really well for a big man. I think he'll be an impressive college lineman and has a chance to get paid to play if he works hard enough. Thanks to all the high school heroes who made this year a whole lot of fun. Let the countdown begin.
  7. Baseballmad, I think that you're correct that Central may not be as good as they have been in previous years, but the SD is an interesting one. SD has a huge dlineman that was a force in the Powell vs SD game. SD was very good up front and handled Powell's running game pretty well. Now PHS doesn't have the ground attact that the devils do, but Halls will definitely need to bring their A game if they are going to beat SD by pounding the football at them. To this Friday's game. I really don't think anyone needs to bring up the records anymore. Powell is playing well, and Halls is much better then the record shows. Who cares? It's Halls vs. Powell; throw it all out. If my memory serves the last 3 times that halls has come to the North side of town they have suffered heart break in the 4th quarter. The 2002 season the Halls QB went down with a knee injury and Powell CB Josh Norman picked off the back up late in the fourth quarter to halt a would be game winning drive (i think) and preserve the victory. The 2004 season was the Hurricane Ivan game where Powell RB Jay Courtney caught a TD pass in a swamp of an endzone late in the fourth for the only score of the game. Then, most recently, the 2006 season where O'Connor shanked a PAT that would have forced overtime. Throw in last year's missed field goal in the 4th by Chris Ducharme, and the 2005 defensive stand on the final drive of the game, and you can see why I say the records simply don't matter. Friday night should be interesting to say the least. If Powell can man up in the box like they did against AC then they have a real shot at winning this game. If Halls gets off on the ground it's going to be really tough for Powell to win this game. What does the secondary for Halls look like this year? If I remember correctly from last year, they like to play a lot of man coverage and not much zone. Was that only because they had Dayton and some good athletes last year? Is the QB still playing FS even after his injury against MHS in the opener?
  8. Honestly, I think that Powell is MUCH better then Karns in the skill positions. The Karns QB is a stud, but as far as running backs wide recievers and dbs I thought that Powell had the upper hand. I wasn't impressed with Karns' skil kids but their line was one of the most impressive units i've seen for freshmen. Maryville is very good in the skill positions as well. Both the Karns QB and the MHS QB are better QBs then the kid at Powell although I think the QB is probably a little bit better then both in terms of overall athleticism.
  9. Karns was tough. Powell gift wrapped two touchdowns for the beavers in the first half though and never really rebounded. Powell's qb missed a fly pattern badly and the karns db picked it and scored, and a punt snapped sail. iied over the head of Justin Wood and he fell as he picked it up setting up karns 1st and 10 on the powell 13 or so. Granted Karns made those plays happen by playing well. I'm not trying to make excuses because Powell was completely dominated by Karns up front. In fairness though, that game is as bad as I've ever seen that group play. If you look at this group of Powell freshmen vs. that group of Karns freshmen, that is if you look at the age group, that is the first time Karns has ever beaten those kids. Again, Karns dominated the game up front, and Powell's inability to run the football to set up the pass is what cost them the game. It'll be interesting to see how the battle of beaver creek plays out over the next couple of years. Also, a karns vs maryville freshman game would be very interesting. Karns is much better up front, but Maryville is better in the skill positions. Both Karns and Maryville have two stud qbs of the future.
  10. I don't know that I neccessarily agree with what the young man did after the game, but I do know that his attitude (as well as the other freshman coaches' on the sideline) seemed to be infectious. The kids were playing well and the coaches were keeping them pumped up and were getting excited themselves. I wasn't crazy about the chant at mid-field, especially because it probably fired up the Maryville JV team, but my son and his friends certainly enjoyed it. And for what its worth they love their freshman coaches and love the fact that they get fired up with them. I guess what I'm saying is I can see both sides, and I can definitely see it rubbing people who just lost the wrong way. Not to say that it's sour grapes. I'm being completly honest, if Powell would have lost and the rebels would have done that it would have bothered me as well. Like I said though, that is that coach's style. According to my son and his friends he's an in your face type coach. In fact, he once told me something like I try to make sure that I love on them just as hard when they do something great as I come down on them when they mess up. He's not one of those Phil Fulmer types thats going to stand there and clap his hands no matter what is going on....but you know what Coach Lowe isn't either. Just my two cents.
  11. I think Coach Lowe has done a pretty good job with the amount of talent that he has had. Remember when Coach Duncan left, after Miligan and that crew graduated, the cupboard was pretty bare. I believe the year after that was 4-7, and we got purple pounded by Chatt. Central in the first round of the playoffs. Then, when Huber and Bruhin were Srs Powell almost beat Maryville. That was a year removed from going 4-7. Powell fans have been a little spoiled in terms of expectations that past few years. Since the 2005 season, the talent level has been down in PHS. Now things are back on the upswing and I am confident that Coach Lowe is the man for the job. PHS will compete for a state title in the coming years. Beyond that, I would much rather have a guy like Lowe running the show then a guy that has earned the nickname lyin' Larry Kerr. Not the type of man I would want leading my son to battle, but that's neither here nor there I suppose. As for Friday I would be surprised if AC throws the ball more then 10 times Friday night. Kerr isn't complicated with his playcalling. He's gonna line up and cram it down your throat untill you stop it. If Powell can step it up up front (Dline and Linebackers) then they have a chance. I know last year was pretty embarrassing in terms of AC throwing the ball on Powell, but I feel like the secondary is much improved this year. If the Panthers can make AC put it in the air they will have chance to be in the game. I have faith in the defensive staff at Powell. Coach Wilks is a football genius. If anyone can get the defense straightened out, it's him.
  12. I had a Maryville parent come up to me and shake my hand and congratulate me. He told me that that was the first time That group of kids has been beaten in 6 years. Said they had won something like 52 games in a row. I just wanted to know if there was any validity to that at all. I wouldn't say that Maryville got "out physicalled." I thought both teams got after it, and played a really good football game. The things that hurt Maryville in this game were the same things that hurt any team in a close game. They turned the ball over (two fumbles, a bad snap on a punt that resulted in a safety, and a pick late which had no bearing on the game). Plus they had some costly penalties. I remember a block in the back on a kickoff return that pinned Maryville deep. That may have been the same drive that the long snapped sailed over the punter's head. One fumble was on a kickoff in the second half (perhaps the opening kickoff) where Maryville had a big return and Darian Logan #17 made a big hit on the return man and the ball bounced straight up in the air to Powell's best receiver (Justin Wood) who was covering on the kick. That was a big momentum shift. It's really a shame that Maryville is going to come off the schedule next year for Powell. It would be amazing to see these two teams lock horn in 3 years. Like HTV said, success breeds success. If Powell fans will be patient with Coach Lowe and Co. things will get turned around. There is enough talent in the JR and Sophomore classes this year that a next year will be a solid year and the freshman and eighth grade classes are loaded. I have a feeling that these next few years will be similar to the Miligan, Huber, Watts era in that annals of Powell football.
  13. Kier's always been that way, and it shows in the teams results. Powell goes as Kier goes. When he gets off and has a big night Powell wins. When teams find a way to stop him (Maryville using the ends as contain players, Karns was able to keep him in check with whatever they were doing for three quarters) Powell loses. That said, I don't think Kier will be on the field that much this Friday night. I would say that AC will line up in some type of power set or at least two tight end I back and just pount it right at the Panthers. Watching the replay of the Maryville game on TV the defensive line play was simply pathetic. If Gibson Barnes and #'s 96 and 30 don't pick it up it's going to be another long night in Powell.
  14. well that was certainly one heck of a ballgame. Both teams played incredibly well. Powell ends up winning 36-20. Really a great win for the Powell program. I believe that 21 was the jacob west kid. He got the first carry of the game, threw an impressive stiff arm and picked up a first down for MHS, and then he never came back into the game. Hope he's ok. Darian Logan had a nice game for the Panthers and it was certainly good to have John Staggs back at FS this week. Landon Wright's TD on the screen pass on 4th and 16 was also a really nice play. What are the reactions of anyone else that was there?
  15. From what I have seen this year Powell has some kids to watch out for. Dyshawn Mobley is getting reps at RB in meaningful spots. Colby Skeen is a kid who is getting some special teams reps here and there and also some reps in garbage time, but he's one of the first freshman that see time on Friday nights. Jonathan Staggs is a FS who will probably start for the Panthers next year, and Justin Wood is a WR who will probably step in to replace Collins or Drummer next fall for Powell. Also, Samuel Hamilton, Tony Foster, and Darian Logan could all see meaningful offensive or defensive snaps for Powell next year Obviously, with my son playing for Powell, I'm a little biased and a little more well seasoned in their roster. I know Karns has a qb that is going to be a stud in the years to come, and they have some good looking linemen. We haven't played the Maryville Freshmen yet but the West kid is going to be an absolute monster when its all said and done.
