Whitehaven (2-0) at Germantown (1-1)
The rundown: The schedule-makers could not have put together a more enticing matchup for the opening round of Region 8-6A games. The Tigers have played well in victories over Overton and Ridgeway, while Germantown took CBHS to overtime in Week 1 before responding with a gutty Week 2 victory over MUS.
These two teams should know each other inside out; Germantown coach Gene Robinson starred at Whitehaven as a player, and his defensive coordinator, Errol Harmon, was the architect of the defense that sparked the Tigers to state championships in 2012 and 2016 under Rodney Saulsberry. Saulsberry’s current DC is Derrick Bobo, a former standout defensive back under Harmon.
In addition to having major implications on the playoff race, this game also will have an impact on the state rankings. Whitehaven enters at No. 5, while the Red Devils dropped from No. 8 to No. 10 despite winning last week.

Game of the week
Whitehaven (2-0) at Germantown (1-1)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
After picking up his first win at Germantown, coach Gene Robinson's Red Devil squad takes on his alma mater in their Region 8-6A opener. Whitehaven, which is coming off of a 49-21 win over Ridgeway, has a pair of young playmakers in sophomores Joe Williams and William H. Carver. Michigan commitment Kody Jones, who rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown in Germantown's win over MUS, is a key player for the Red Devils.
Thompson's pick: Whitehaven 28, Germantown 21

Memphis area Class 6A high school football preview, predictions for 2021
The Tennessee high school football season is just over a week away.
As we count down the days to kickoff, the Commercial Appeal is breaking down each class with a series of previews featuring key players, big games, and hot takes among other things.
The series begins with Class 6A.
Three hot takes for 2021
SCS teams won't miss a beat
Not only did the Shelby County Schools teams in this class miss the entire season last year, the school district's largest schools moved into a new redesigned Region 8-6A, which now includes eight Memphis area teams instead of dividing them up into 7-6A and 8-6A. Even so, look for Whitehaven, Germantown and White Station to finish near the top of the standings.
Region 8-6A up for grabs
Last year, Bartlett quickly established itself as the dominant team in the region. But the Panthers lost a lot of talent, including all-state running back Robert Giaimo.
Sophomore stars may emerge
Region 8-6A features a pair of the Commercial Appeal's 2021 Dandy Dozen members in Germantown's Tahj Shabazz and Kody Jones. But keep an eye on two sophomores. Whitehaven running back Joe Williams and Houston defensive end Kavion Benton both have SEC offers and could make an immediate impact.
Key players to watch
Kavion Benton, Houston, So.: The solidly-built 6-foot-3, 245-pound defensive end has offers from Florida and Louisville.
Shamari Covington, White Station, Sr.: The speedy receiver is one of the fastest hurdlers in the state. He has an offer from UT-Martin.
Christian Crew, Houston, Sr.: The three-year starter was a first-team all-region selection in 7-6A last year.
Hudson Hollenbeck, Collierville, Sr.: One of the state's top kickers, Hollenbeck has offers from Miami (Ohio) and Charleston Southern.
Kody Jones, Germantown, Sr.: The Michigan commitment is the No. 11 prospect in Tennessee and the No. 16 athlete in the nation in the 2022 class.Troy Martin, Collierville, Sr.: Martin, who rushed for 565 yards and six touchdowns in seven games, was a first-team all-region selection in 7-6A last year.
Luke Needham, Houston, Sr.: The 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman was a first-team all-metro selection and has an offer from Eastern Kentucky.
Braylen Ragland, White Station, Jr.: The 6-foot, 185-pound quarterback has offers from Memphis, Tennessee, Auburn and Jackson State, among others.
Tahj Shabazz, Germantown, Sr.: The 6-foot-2, 220-pound receiver is ranked No. 40 in Tennessee for the Class of 2022. He has offers from Army, Kansas and Baylor, among others.
Will Stegall, Houston, Sr.: The defensive back, whose twin brother Ben plays running back, was a first-team all-region selection last year.
Joe Williams, Whitehaven, So.: The sophomore athlete has blistering speed that's earned him offers from Memphis, Tennessee and Arkansas State among others.
Taylor Williams, Whitehaven, Sr.: Williams started as a sophomore on the 2019 Whitehaven team that made the Class 6A quarterfinals. This year, he anchors the Tigers' offensive line.
Five must-see region games
Whitehaven at Germantown (Sept. 3): Germantown coach Gene Robinson, who starred at Whitehaven, coaches his first 8-6A region game against the perennial powerhouse Tigers. Michigan commitment Kody Jones, Dandy Dozen selection Tahj Shabazz and sophomore standout Joe Williams give this game plenty of star power.
Houston at Collierville (Oct. 8)
These rivals have split their last four meetings, including last year's 21-14 Collierville victory. Each team has a pass rusher in Kavion Benton (Houston) and Jaden McKinney (Collierville) with Power-5 offers.
Bartlett at White Station (Sept. 24)
The defending region champs hit the road to take on a talented White Station team that is led by one of the top quarterback prospects in the area in Braylen Ragland.
Germantown at Houston (Sept 24)
An intriguing midseason matchup that could end up impacting the standings. The winner of this rivalry game has scored 35 points or more every year since 2016.
Whitehaven at Bartlett (Oct. 29)
Whitehaven closes out the regular season on the road against last year's Class 6A semifinalists. A late-season clash on the last field to host a Memphis-area high school playoff game.

Memphis high school football Class 5A preview, predictions for 2021
With the TSSAA high school football season beginning next week, The Commercial Appeal's preview series continues with Class 5A.
Three hot takes
Munford is the team to beat
Yes, Central has dropped down to Class 5A. But last year's Region 8-5A champion, Munford, is still the top team until someone knocks the Cougars off. They went 9-4 overall and 4-0 in region play last year and return a key player on each side of the ball in defensive back Icarius Hodgin and running back Auvic White.
Quincy Briggs is X-factor for Central
Central's Quincy Briggs is one of the most dynamic athletes in the area. He's committed to play defensive back at Yale, but he has the speed to burn defenders as a wide receiver. He'll be used on special teams to return kicks and punts as well.
Brighton will have first winning season since 2017
Brighton won its first-round playoff game and finished 6-6 last year. With running back Braxton Sharp, quarterback Nick Harvell, and defensive lineman Jacob Rodriguez returning, the Cardinals are in position to have their best season in a while.
Players to watch
Quincy Briggs, Central, Sr.: The Yale commitment is the No. 41 prospect in Tennessee and No. 106 athlete in the nation for the Class of 2022.
Nick Harvell, Brighton, Sr.: Harvell had 764 passing yards with seven touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 958 yards and eight touchdowns.
Icarius Hodgin, Munford, Sr.: The reigning Region 8-5A defensive player of the year had 64 tackles and seven interceptions.
Darrien Lewis, Brighton, Sr.: Lewis, a two-time first-team all-region selection, had 27 tackles for loss, four interceptions and three forced fumbles last season.
Jacob Rodruiguez, Brighton, Sr.: The 5-10, 245-pound nose guard was a first-team all-region selection in 8-5A.
Braxton Sharp, Brighton, Jr.: The Region 8-5A first-team selection rushed for 1,017 yards and 11 touchdowns on 102 carries. He caught 19 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown.
George Thomas III, Overton, Jr.: Thomas is a dominant 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive end.DJ Vassar, Munford, Sr.: Vassar was a first-team all-region defensive lineman in 8-5A.
Auvic White, Munford, Sr.: White rushed for 1,063 yards on 187 carries for nine touchdowns. He also caught nine passes for 117 yards.
Five must-see region games
Brighton at Overton (Sept. 3)
Overton opens region play against Brighton, which made the second round of the Class 5A playoffs last year.
Southwind at Central (Sept. 24)
A pair of teams that missed last season face each other in a midseason test. A chance to see Briggs show off his athleticism on the brand new turf at Crump Stadium.
Munford at Brighton (Oct. 1)
The region's two playoff representatives from last year face off in a cross-county showdown. Brighton's offense led by Sharp against Munford's defense led by Hodgin should be fun to watch.
Southwind at Munford (Oct. 8)
The defending region champs host Southwind, which has won at least seven games for the past three seasons.
Munford at Central (Oct. 29)
This regular-season finale could potentially determine who gets a top seed in the playoffs. The defending region champs against the former 6A school playing in the region for the first time.
