  9. Shorter Wrestling signs prep All-American Mike Ettore ROME, Ga. - Shorter University head wrestling coach Josh Henson announced today the signing of Brandon High School standout Mike Ettore to his 2011 recruiting class. Ettore, a native of Brandon, Fla., is a two-time Florida state finalist and is the defending Florida state champion at 189 pounds. "Mike brings a lot to the table," said Henson of Ettore. "Mike has enjoyed success at the national level and also brings the valuable experience of wrestling for a premier high school program like Brandon." Brandon High is acknowledged as one of the top prep wrestling programs in the country and is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. Ettore has spent his high school career with the Eagles under the direction of Hall of Fame head coach Russ Cozart. Ettore's success is not limited to the prep ranks in Florida. Ettore is a two-time Cadet All-American and placed sixth to earn All-America status at the 6th Annual NHSCA National Wrestling Championship in Virginia Beach, Va., last March. "We are very excited that Mike has decided to continue his career at Shorter University," Henson said. "Mike is the type of wrestler who has the potential to be a cornerstone of our program for the next four years."

Shorter University Wrestling announces signing of Jay Taylor ROME, Ga. - Shorter University head wrestling coach Josh Henson announced today the signing of Jay Taylor to the Hawks' 2011 recruiting class. Taylor, a native of Oviedo, Fla., is set to join the Hawk wrestling team in the fall of 2011 after he closes out his successful career at Oviedo High School, one of the top prep wrestling programs in the country. "Jay will make an immediate impact for us on the wrestling mats," said Henson, whose team is in the midst of its inaugural season. "Jay has the ability to be a huge part of our program for the next four years. "He has embraced the idea that he will be setting the standard for every wrestler that follows him at Shorter University." Taylor has been rated as a Top 100 recruit for any weight class by Intermat Wrestling and is the No. 6 rated recruit at 197 pounds according to Win Magazine. He is a two-time Florida state championship finalist and a one-time state champion. Taylor has been an NHSCA Freshman National Runner-Up and an NHSCA Junior National Runner-Up while also being named a Fargo Junior National All-American. He will come to Shorter from Oviedo High, which is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation and is the winner of five team state championships in Florida. 12. “You only deserve what you earn” – Tom Brands. There's no handouts in college buddy. I don't care if they're best friends off the mat, I want the best one out there representing the Mocs. Conclusion: nitetime6 = Out of his mind.
  13. I think Heath Eslinger would be another great pick! I think Heath or Jon (give a few years) can get the guys wrestling the way we like to see UTC wrestle. Having wrestled for both Brands/Heath, and wrestled with Sioredas, I can tell you they know the right way to run a successful DI wrestling program. I'm sure it would take a year or so to get fully adjusted to the role, but after that I think they would do just fine. UTC would be lucky to get one of these guys. They would be in it for the long haul, not just a stepping stone. As far as experience I think they are both more than qualified. Look at the wrestling programs and coaches they've been influenced by: Sioredas: Great Bridge H.S (all the Martins), gotta be one of the top Gramby clinicians in the country right now, Missouri (1st 3 yrs of college), UTC (Brands, Fullhart, Hamilton, All-American), ODU (Martin, coached NCAA finialist this year). Eslinger: Bradley Central (wrestled and coached, great program), UTC (2nd most on wins list, close to AA status at NCAA's, and coached with Brands 2 yrs), Cleveland (I think he was TN coach of the year his first season) Yeah, they're both young, but that didn't stop Stanford from hiring Jason Borrelli last season as their head coach. He's the same age as Sioredas and never even earned AA status at NCAA's, only a 2x qualifier for Central Michigan. Both solid candidates and I hope we get one of them. If one of them gets the job I won't be one of the people surprised when they start having success!!
  14. Here's my #1 for the Job Jon Sioredas - Old Dominion Assistant Coach, former UTC All-American. Coach Jon Sioredas begins his third season with the Monarchs. Coach Sioredas helped coach one of the best teams in Old Dominion history last year, which was ranked top 20 in the country by all major polls. The blue and silver posted a 17-3 mark, with the only defeats coming from Iowa, Illinois, and Hofstra. Coach Sioredas returned to his hometown as an assistant coach to his former high school mentor Steve Martin. The former All-American lends his experience to the team's middle and upper weights. He has made a vast impact in the training room, as well as helping to recruit nationally ranked athletes. His work ethic, high energy, and experience have helped push Old Dominion Wrestling into the national spotlight. Coach Sioredas is no stranger to success. After spending three years at Mizzou, Sioredas jumped at the opportunity to wrestle for NCAA and World Champion Terry Brands at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. With only two years under the helm of Coach Brands, Sioredas moved from a top 20 athlete to being ranked as high as 2nd in the country. Sioredas was named TheMat.com's national wrestler of the week for defeating Oklahoma State's national champion Johny Hendricks 5-3 and Boise State's Russell Brunson by fall in the second period. Jon was a two-time conference champion, outstanding wrestler, wrestler of the year, and finished his senor season with All-American honors by taking 5th place at 165 pounds in the 2005 NCAA Division I tournament, all while on the national deans list. A 2000 Great Bridge High School graduate, Sioredas was a Virginia state champion, All-American, and AAU national champ while wrestling for the Wildcats. He amassed a 181-13 career record, becoming the 4th most winningest wrestler in Virginia high school history. Coach Sioredas serves as a featured clinician at camps and clinics across the country. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is currently pursuing his Master's in Business Administration with an expected completion date of summer of 2009.
