  1. Haven't posted this year but finally had to let off a little steam over the inconsistent and biased up ref officiating in DII AA this year. This weekend's Baylor vs Hutchison game tested my limits. But first, I want to note that Hutchison did not play their best game at Baylor and may not have won even with unbiased officiating from the up ref, but it is grossly unfair to the young ladies who work extremely hard at the game of volleyball to take away their chance at victory via an up ref who isn't going to call the violations the same on both sides of the net. It all started when Hutchison's coach received a yellow card on the 2nd point of the 1st set. Yes, I said the 2nd point. No conversation with the Captain, no warning, up ref simply pulled the card out of his pocket and put Hutchinson's coach on the bench for the 1st set. Later on, one of the line judges told the Hutchison coaches the yellow card was unfair. So much for unity among the officials. Shortly thereafter, Hutchison's coach was warned for "talking to much". So not only does he have to sit down during the set, now he can't even talk to his team. Through all this, Baylor's coach was up off her bench, talking to her players on and off the court, basically coaching up a storm. Would have been nice if the up ref had allowed the Hutchison coach to do the same. Throughout the match, Hutchison was called for net, double hits and the usual violations. However, very few, if any violations were called against Baylor until the third set (even though Baylor had similar double hits, lifts and net violations throughout the 1st 2 sets). I'm not saying the calls against Hutchison were not warranted, I'm saying the up ref knowingly chose to not make the same call against Baylor. While an exciting match, both teams had many unforced errors and sloppy play at times. This typically translates into both teams having violations, but rarely did the whistle blow against Baylor. This was a game between 2 well matched teams and Baylor deserves credit for the win, but to have the up official "ensure" the victory shows a total lack of respect for the young ladies on both sides of the net. They have a right to win or lose the match on their own, and a right to unbiased and consistent officiating. Best of luck to Baylor, they have a very good team and will give the others fits at state.

  2. Most of the players from W TNs top D2-A and D2-AA teams (St Georges, ECS, St Agnes and St Benedict) play (or started playing) club at Memphis Metro JVC run by former Hutchison coach Jitka Okolicany. Some play at Memphis Jrs. or Delta Force, smaller clubs that tend to have fewer teams. All are good clubs with a variety of programs and coaching expertise. Over time players (and parents) tend to end up at the club which fits best.

CB did not mean to do that and was an oversight. I can say this though about those two schools. One surprised me and one absolutely didn't. It was very obvious that St Georges was a quality Volleyball Team since they were seen at the Collierville Tournament and it was wondered where all of the great players they had were developed. Club?? Seeing them play in the Boro without much fanfare, reinforced they could play with just about anyone. They are a great team.

Ensworth just came out of the blue. Their coach did more than an excellent job with the team. They played in the "Back to the Boro" and maybe because of their draw, missing players, etc, they did not impress very many. It was certainly obvious that some of their fans expected more at that Tournament. We looked around to try to find the setter that transferred from Hutchison last year but maybe overlooked her. As you know D2 was played at Blackman the first day and MTSU the second day and in the finals the last day at MTSU> I was not able to see them much however I did make it up at the "Back to the Boro" as Ann Mullins really filled the Tournament with what I thought was a Mini State tournament for D2 school although ST. Georges was not there and of course, Hutchison was not there either. Can't make them all. In rereading posts I picked up that no memtion was given. The TSSAA streaming was good and i did rerun St Georges because I thought we would likely see them again for a couple of years. We see Ensworth from time to time and they will continue to get better.

    Sorry again for the oversight.

  3. An eight grader plays for a high school coach coaching a JV club team in spring 2010.

Assume the eight grader has already enrolled (parents signed private school contract, paid deposit, etc.) in the high school where the club coach is head volleyball coach to attend as a 9th grader in the fall 2010. The middle school and high school are unaffiliated.

Does anyone know if this is an acceptable situation based on the TSSAA rules? I think it is but am curios.

  4. CB, I hope I am interpreting this correctly... Does this mean schools could hold practice daily from July 12-16, 19-23 and 26-30 (15 days) and still be in compliance? Or any combination of days from July 12-Aug 1 (including weekends) as long as they practice no more than 15 days during this time? Have I interpreted this correctly? Also, do multiple practices in a day count as 1 day or multiple days? Thanks for your insight.

  5. Anyone know exactly when high school volleyball teams are eligible to start practice. Seems according to TSSAA that it is August 2 (which I believe means that team camps can be held around July 26).

However, there seems to be some thought that TSSAA will move the date back (as they have done with football) one week to allow teams to start the week of July 26 with team camps allowed the week of July 19.

Seems unfair that football would be allowed to start early but not the other fall sports. Anyone have additional insight?

  6. If Checkerboard was their coach, when she gets situated I hope she returns and posts. Hutch is a fine school, had a fine young team this year and will be competing in State the next few years if their players stay.

Agree with PHargis, there is a good base of talent and with a new coach as good as the last one they can compete with the best. Most if not all will stay due to TSSAA transfer rules requiring transfers to sit out a year. The rules make it prohibitive to transfer in high school, especially for any that have desire to play in college. I don't think hardship will apply in this case.

The school is being very tightlipped about everything surrounding the situation including plan for hiring a new coach. If checkerboard knows anything, my guess is there is the threat of termination to keep anything known confidential. Interesting how different school administrations handle coaching searches...

  7. St. Benedict beat a game Hutchison team last night 3-0. Hutchison gave the Eagles all they could handle in the first set eventually losing 26-24. SBA's experience and maturity won out in the second and third sets over Hutchison's youth and inexperience. A few untimely rotation mismatches in SBA's favor weighed heavily on the Sting as SBA was able to mount a couple of 6 or 7 point runs in the last 2 sets.

Congrats to the St. Benedict girls and good luck at State.

  8. I hope Clifford20 is right...My vote is to remove them all, they seem to become more inconsistent and out of touch with the game each year. My particular pet peeve is the lift or carry call, seems they all like to pick one critical play each match to call the mandatory lift, meanwhile ignoring carries by the middles and other blatant lifts the rest of the match.

  9. I've received a notification that I have a private message (from a board moderator) but when I try to read it I get a message that I am not authorized to read private messages. When I try to send a private message I get a message that says I am not authorized to send private messages. When I try to email an administrator, I get a message that I am not authorized to email this individual. When I try to email play4keeps to let him/her know that I cannot read the private message I get a message that says I am not authorized to email this individual. I have private messaging enabled in my profile (and have for some time).

    Very frustrating, please help!

  10. Curious as to folks opinions on a pre-season "players to watch" list from the Brentwood Team Camp...

I'll start with a few I've seen mentioned in the message threads:

    -Marshall, MH from Houston

-Hudson, MH and her senior 6'3" teammate from Ravenwood. I don't think the teammate participated in the camp, or maybe not all days?

    -Sabbatini, setter from Hutchison

-Smith from Page (assuming she is able to return from injury this year)

-Brentwood had an OH that was tall and quick with a good swing (didn't catch her name)

Who else has potential or showed flashes of brilliance?

  12. Video evidence supports BD!

Bigdaddy and The Chosen One, thanks for backing me up and confirming my post with the video evidence. As a new member and new poster, I must admit that it is intimidating to have an experienced poster like oldsetter challenge you right off the bat (even if it was from the other side of the court)...

I think CoachT is a great outlet for the fans and look forward to enjoying it for years.

Oldsetter, you obviously have a great deal of vball expertise and I hope to meet and have a conversation with you one day (hopefully as my daughter's team returns to the state tournament).

  13. Just one example (there were an unusual number of very bad calls in this match, many subjective and not necessarily quantifiable) from the GPS/Hutchison match Thursday afternoon...I will not name teams or players as the bad calls (at times) went both ways, however those that were there will recognize this one...

-Player hits a kill to the far corner where the line judge is stationed (in correct position behind the corner lines) and the ball hits the line judge in the ankle, clearly out of bounds. After conferring with the up ref, ball is called in.

-Fans of the team the call is made against react loudly. No profanity used or personal attacks were made. Simply loud complaining about the call. Up ref requests that T$$AA official move to the stands to keep an eye on the fans and call a penalty if need be. Fans (and in many cases the coach) of the opposing team were just as loud and vocal when calls went against their team but NO action was taken by the Up ref or the T$$AA.

In general, one bad call does not change a game's outcome and this one probably would have ended the same regardless of the multiple bad calls. Bad calls by the officials are part of the game and are to be expected. However, it is a fact that the bad calls have a huge impact on momentum and the course of the game and the expectation should be that bad calls are rare and not the norm as they were in this match.

And, I'm pretty sure it is all on video if anyone from the T$$AA would like to review the assigned officials performance in this match.

  14. Wow, thanks for the kind words for Hutchison!

Congrats to GPS (2 in a row) and Father Ryan. What a great tournament.

Also, thanks to the St George's and St Benedict fans who helped cheer Hutch on! It was great to see the west hang together!

Last, the officiating was horrible! Can't believe these folks get paid...
