  1. Well, i am sure they will be tough...Are those legit electronically timed 40's? You know their were just a handful, and i mean a few NFL players who ran in the 4.3's in the NFL combine? Not being smart, but a lot of times i have a hard time accepting the times some of the people on here throw out. Our RB Moore is a track specialist and placed in the top 10 in the state in the 100Meters and i would bet he runs near a 4.5 give or take...

Surprisingly Gardner is not the fastest guy on Powell's team. He is very fast, but does not run a 4.3. The fastest 40 time recorded this year at Powell that I heard from a very reliable source (one of the two coaches that timed the 40s) was the safety Jon Strozyk ran a 4.4 before the season started. Surprising since he is coming off an ACL injury, but nonetheless Gardner is fast. I would be shocked if Moore was a 4.5 40. I believe he also could stay in the 4.4s. It will be interesting if Strozyk and Moore get in a foot race just to see how fast this Moore kid is. I would never bet against a track star though lol.

  2. So, hows Henry County look after losing quite a bit of players last year? I know Henry County was in a similar situation to Powell.

Powell has the talent in place to be a very good team again, but inexperience was shining that first game for us. I expect Powell to be hard to beat by the end of the year, but only if they come together and continue to improve. Not the same Powell team you all played in the state championship last year, but still has potential to be a solid team.

Good luck to Henry County this year. Hope you all have another successful season.

  3. There's no more Mobley anymore and it showed last wk., now its back to the old average powell teams again. AE wins this one.

Mobley was an outstanding player and the best player I have ever seen come through Powell. He is one of the best running backs if not the best running back I have seen come out of East Tennessee. Saying that the success of the Powell team over the past few years had to do with the entire team effort. It all started with defense, which was over-looked by a high power offense. Powell's offense scored so many points because the defense limited almost every team to a 3 and out and gave that high powered offense several chances to score throughout the game. Powell will not have the same team as last years team or the year before last, but they do have a team that can be very successful this year. Looking at Powell's schedule I see one team that I look at and think that Powell should lose to and that is Oak Ridge. I have to disagree that Powell will become average again because I believe that they still will be one of the better teams around this area by the end of the year AS LONG as they continue to improve because the talent is in place, but the experience is not.

As osunut stated above me something that many people over looked was the WR's blocking downfield. The WR's held their block and did an outstanding job at sealing their blocks. That is a big thing missing this year. Montario Washington is a good RB and he will do a very good job this year at RB. He is no Dyshawn Mobley, but he still is going to be one of the better RB's around East Tennessee. A change of pace back in Garner will also be hard to stop if he gets a seam then he is gone. IDK when its going to happen, but when Powell settles in, starts gaining experience, and Hagan+WR's start getting comfortable teams better watch out and not take Powell lightly.

To put it shortly this Powell team has a lot of potential. Whether they fulfill that is yet to be seen.

Also, that Rhea County team was very well coached and very well disciplined. They didn't seem that they were out of place very much defensively and they were very strong up front. Rhea County is typically a good football team year in and year out, but last year they had a down year. This year they will improve and that coach seems to have them going in the right direction.

Just a side note... Powell's future looks pretty bright as the Powell JV team beat Alcoa's JV team last week, which used to never happen. Last time a Powell JV or Freshman team beat Maryville JV, or Alcoa JV was when last years senior class were Freshmen.

  4. I believe we see an improved Powell team this week. Powell's younger players let nerves get the best of them last game, and that was exemplified in the first half. Rhea County returned 17 starters and that was evident as their defense was very well disciplined. AE is also going to come out improved from last week as well. AE only returned 3 starters from last years team, so that first game had to be tough for them.

The score of last weeks Rhea County game did not tell the whole story. Powell made many mistakes. One of the first series Owenby hit a wide open receiver in what would have probably been a TD, but the receiver dropped the pass. Then the fumble on the 5 yard line didn't help as well.

Powell has to improve in their receivers blocking. The receivers did a very bad job blocking last game, but I believe that will get better. I still see Powell's offense putting up pretty good numbers this year. Hagan is going to be a really good QB as long as the receivers catch the ball. Powell's defense is tough and is only going to improve every game.

I see Powell winning this game by two TD's.

  5. That is what i was saying, vols1234 lol..Powell losing a lot from this past years team, and Powell isn't known as a year in year out traditional football powerhouse..Best team they have had in 20 years.

This upcoming Powell team has a lot potential. Many expected Powell to reload instead of rebuild. Lets just say most of the back-up players to these seniors would have started at many other programs around the area. Lowe's reasons for leaving were exactly as stated and it was for family reasons. This is speculation, but I would expect Powell to hire from within, so I wouldn't expect that drastic of a change because their coaching staff would remain together. Lowe was a great coach and will be missed, but Powell will be a solid team again next year. Their is still a lot of talent left on the roster and Powell could indeed continue there recent success if they can take that talent and mold it together into a unit. Most people close to the program expect another successful season. Powell lost a great coach, and from here everyone will just have to wait and see until the start of next season.

Also, Powell hasn't been a football powerhouse you are exactly right about that. Saying that they have been since the rezoning took place. ;)

  6. I agree here, i am an avid Oak Ridge fan, but their aint no way a team in the east will win state...We oak ridge have been to a many state tournament, but goin and winning are two different stories...BTW, Maryville deserved that title in 07

Powell deserved that title more than Maryville that year. Powell beat Maryville by 25 points in the Region Championship. Saying that I am still glad someone from the East brought home the gold ball for 3a ball because that doesn't happen much.

Oak Ridge and Powell both had the pieces in 08 to bring the gold ball home again. I believe Oak Ridge was nationally ranked that year as their only two losses before the state tourney were to Powell and a team out of Georgia. Thats when Oak Ridge had Dowdell, Stephens, Gregory, Tre Smith, and Tyler Clark. Also had Raphael Coffey and Tucker Trent coming in off the bench. That Oak Ridge team lined up with size and was very athletic (Forward) Dowdell (6'6), (Center) Gregory (6'8), Coffey(Garud) (6'2), Clark (Gaurd)(6'3), Smith (6'1), Trent (6'5)(G/F) and Stephens being one of the best PG in the state. Powell had a very explosive offensive team that had 5 shooters in the starting line up. Seymore, Ballinger, Gordon, Hanson, and Payne. Powell's tallest player was 6'4, but had too much speed and too many shooters that could score the ball. Seymore, Ballinger, and Gordon would score 60 points by themselves, and to have a chance to beat Powell you had to score 80+ points usually.

Both of those teams had the make-up to win the state championship that year, but more so with Oak Ridge becuase of the size. It was very fun watching both of those teams play especially when they faced off against each other. Basketball in east tn was on fire back then. I believe the bottom feeder teams in the district in 07 and 08 would compete for the district title now. That Oak Ridge team was one of the best teams I have seen in East TN in a long time. Sweetscience, you all disappointed in 08 lol. Both that (2008) Oak Ridge teams and (2008) Powell team would absolutely destroy any team in East TN this year or the past few years. Actually to be honest Halls, Powell, Farragut, Fulton, AE, Maryville, Bearden, and Oak Ridge from 2006-2008 would have dominated any team in East TN right now. Although, I must say basketball in East TN looks to be getting a little better this year then it has been in the past few years.

  7. A run at a State Title in Basketball???? Maybe a run a the State Tourny but unless something crazy like Maryville in 2007 happens there is no chance of winning it.... Southwind,Melrose, Craigmont, White Station, Clarksville NE are way better teams. Gold Balls seem to go to the west in boys bball, just saying...

You left off the best team. Ridgeway is ranked 16th in the Nation by ESPN and is currently undefeated. Watch out for Science Hill as well who is ranked 44th in the Nation by ESPN.

  8. I agree Powell's offense should be solid next year. There are young capable receivers waiting in the wings to fill in for Wright, Wood, Logan, and both Owenbys (one graduating and one moving from WR to QB). My son said that Clay Leeper looked really good in the JV games he played in. Also, Christian Kidd started a game in place of an injured Landon Wright at Rhea County. The cupboard isn't bare there; it'll just look a lot different. As basketball mentioned, I can't imagine Strozyk doesn't play some receiver next year. Also, Powell basically brings back 4 guys on the offensive line because Micael Ashe played a lot of snaps this year. They did lose their top 2 though on the OL.

The question marks really come on the defensive side of the ball. Coach Hawkins and Coach Lamb will have their hands full trying to replace the 6 guys they lost at inside and outside linebacker. Williams, Hammond, Agee, Mobley, Skeen, and Bunch are all gone and there doesn't appear to be a whole lot behind those guys. Scott needs to have another huge year, and some of those young guys are going to have to step up. My son tells me that the front runners to compete at inside backer next year are Jacob Story (a transfer who was inelibgible this year), Brody Husky, Josh Singleton, and Tyler Childers. He also said that OLB Donnie Tillman looked good in practice before suffering a season ending injury. The secondary should be strong. Sweat will probably stay at safety. He seemed to play well from what I saw of him at safety. Strozyk and Washington will be lock down at corner. I hear the coaches really like Mike Brown as well to compete for some playing time somehow.

I agree with you here, but not sure what is going to play out with the secondary. Dylan Sweat may stay at safety next year, and keep Montario and Strozyk on the corners, which would get the job done. Saying that the reason I thought Strozyk could be moved to safety is because he would be more involved. Teams would have a very hard time throwing the football deep, and throwing the football towards the middle of the field as safety in Powells defense acts a center fielder and is in charge of a much bigger part of the field then a corner. Teams would have to be cautious in where to throw the ball, and could force more teams to be conservative in the passing game. Also, Strozyk would be very involved in the run game as he would be coming up making a hit, where as he is less involved when playing corner because he is in charge of the deep ball on his side of the field and the run game towards his side of the field. Strozyk would be involved in every play as a safety, where as he would only be involved in some plays as a corner. The safety is going to be crucial next year with the lack of depth at LB and they will need someone who is going to be a sure tackler, someone who can read the field very well, and someone with good speed because there could be several times early season that the LB's miss their assignments due to lack of experience which would leave RB vs Saftey. I see Strozyk playing safety because I believe he is a player that the coaches will want involved in every play as he brings 4 years experience as a starter. Teams will be forced to attack Strozyk which should result in Powell's favor, where as if he was playing corner they could play away from him and take him out of the game. I have seen Strozyk every once and while and it looks like he is putting on quite a bit more size in his upperbody since his knee injury and he had pretty good size for a DB before, which means he would be able to lay some licks on people coming through the line. If I remember correctly Strozyk started safety as a freshman, so it wouldn't be completely new for him if he went back there again. They move Sweat to corner or may keep everything the same. I really don't know just looking at it from a coaches standpoint. Next year should be interesting and full of surprises.

  9. I'd love to see Powell make another run next year, but they have a few big holes to fill. Mobley is irreplaceable. However, Montario Washington and Tyshawn Gardin are both talented backs (as we've seen the last 2 years), and will definitely have a chance to shine next to Hagen Owenby. I too think Owenby is a better passer than McPhetridge, in addition to his excellent running ability. 3/5ths of the offensive line returns, which is a a plus. If Powell can develop some reliable receivers, the offense should be potent next year.

Outside of losing Mobley, the biggest question mark has to be on the defensive side of the ball. The Panthers have had an outstanding defense the last 2 seasons, and if they want to make another deep run, they'll have to put together another solid defense next year. LB will definitely be a green position, with all of the talent that graduated, but there also isn't a lot of depth on the D Line or in the secondary. Fortunately, Moore and Jett both return on the D Line, along with Strozyk and Washington in the secondary. I think that will be the biggest challenge for Powell - finding a way to reload the defense.

I would agree with this statement. I know that Sharonn Moore should be good next year along with Cody Jett progressing from that ankle injury early in the year. Devin Scott at LB did not start this year, but led the teams in total tackles and was second in solo tackles behind Colby Skeen. I wouldn't be surprised to see Strozyk moved to safety because of how well he reads the field and so teams can't throw away from him. He has also put on the size to play that position. If that happens then that means someone has to step up and fill in the shoes at CB. Montario Washington should play big next year as well, and Powell's secondary if they can find another DB will be hard to throw the ball on. The biggest problem I see is LB. I only know of Scott coming back. If Powell fills the shoes at LB, then I see them being good again. Defensive line I believe will be alright with Jett and Moore if they stay healthy. Got to replace a nose gaurd. Secondary can not have any injuries next year because the depth will be very shallow. As far as offensive receivers I am not sure who is going to step up, but wouldn't be surprised to see Strozyk play a little receiver. I have heard a rumor and if this rumor so happens to be true then Powell will have one heck of a running back/receiver. We will just have to wait and see how it plays out because their is question marks, and will be until the start of the season.

  10. Wow. The last thing the rest of the district needs is middle of the pack teams beating the top two. Makes it harder for the rest of the teams to make headway unless you beat OR and Karns. Good win for powell tho. I thought they might be down this year.

Powell basketball hasn't been good since 07-08 season. I believe Powell still is down, but played a good game. Powell had its years of great basketball from 05-08, more so in 2006-07 and 2007-08 season where they were arguably one of the top teams in the state for 3a, but now its looking more and more like Powell is becoming a football school. Hope they surprise me this year, but I don't see it happening. Good luck to the Panthers.

  11. West and Lenoir City should be the top teams to beat in the east.

Powell should reload next year. I wouldn't count them out because they may be the team to beat again. If they fill the question marks in the LB core and O-Line then they will have similar success of the past few years. Returning their best defensive player who only played half the year because of an ACL tear, returning their other stout DB Montario, along with some other good defensive players will really help. Also, with Owenby taking the reigns at QB could open up many different looks, then what this years team ran simply because Owenby is a very good passing QB, who also can run the football. Tyshawn and Montario running the football will be hard to handle because Tyshawn speed that allows him to get a crack or seem and be gone, and Montario gives that hard nose down field running that every team needs.

IF and I say IF this Powell team can fill the question marks at LB and OL then they can make another run next year and repeat the success because the athletes are in place, but whether the puzzle will fit together or not is yet to be seen.

  12. You could very well be correct but I just do not see Powell being a contender next year at this point I will say. I think your correct OR will be the best until AC gets everything going.

I think you have wishful thinking lol. Powell is/should be reloading. Question marks with O line and LB core, but return their best defensive player that was out half the year with a torn ACL, and DB's along with some pretty stout defensive lineman and a good LB.

Offensively their QB is going to be hard to handle because he is a very good passing QB, but can also run the football. He started receiver this year, and Lowe believes that he would have started at just about any other school around as a QB and stated that he was the best back-up QB in the state this year. As far as the running game if Powell can fill in the question marks on the O line, then they will have success because they got some really good backs that were playing behind Dyshawn Mobley this year. Tyshawn and Montario should be handling the running duty, with the addition of one more back who would carry a load if the rumor I have heard turns out to be true. Tyshawn brings very good speed and quickness(4.4s 40 time if I had to guess) and if he gets a seem then no one will catch him and he'll be gone. Montario is more of a downhill runner who has pretty good speed and vision, but runs more like Mobley.

If Lowe can put the pieces together before next season then Powell could continue its success of the past few years. I see the District coming down to Oak Ridge and Powell again, but giving the edge to Oak Ridge for now just because the question marks on Powell's end, but if Powell fills those question marks as expected by most close to the program then I would probably have to give the edge to Powell.

  13. OR is the prohibitive favorite for sure. The rest of the district is more interesting in the sense of where they'll shake out. I would have thought Central would have been much better this past year. I think they're on the cusp of some good things in the very near future. I had thought that HVA was getting Aaron Blance since he'd enrolled there but on another thread there is speculation that he's trying to get back to Webb. That would hurt with the loss of Eskridge. Karns lost some senior talent and I think they'll be down from this year. Powell does have to replace some irreplaceable players so they're a big unknown. AC lost some good ones but I expect the defense will be shored up and they'll make some noise for the top slot among the 5A teams. Okay, that leaves Halls and Campbell County as the cellar dwellers. No offense to them, but I see them there for a while. CC lost a good QB in Tuffy Shoupe (dude, I love that name). Halls lost a couple of very good players in Brown and Long and I don't see them being easily replaced on what was a 1-9 team.

Powell is reloading for next year. I really believe they can have another great year. They have question marks with the O-line and Linebackers, but they return their best defensive player that was out half the year with a torn ACL, another 2 year DB starter, and have a few guys who split time on the D-line and LB (one of those guys was the second leading tackler on the team) who filled in nicely this year. Offensively their QB next year is going to be very good throwing the football, but he can also run the football very well(started receiver and back up QB this year). Very good passing QB, which could open up some different looks than what many saw with this years team. As Coach Matt Lowe said all year that Owenby is the best back-up QB in the state and would have started at almost any other program around. They lose a few receivers, but they have enough athletes to step up and make a seemless transition. Their running game will be good again(depending on O line) as they will have a Montario and Tyshawn who would have started at just about any other school as a running back, but was backing up Dyshawn Mobley. Tyshawn brings a whole lot of speed and quickness if he gets a seem he is gone, where as Montario brings pretty good speed and vision, but is more of a downhill runner. IF Powell can replace that linebacking core ond replace the two O lineman they lost then I would watch out for this team again because I would expect them to repeat the success they have had over the past few years. Powell has the talent in place to make another run again, but will have to see if the puzzle can be put together before the beginning of next season.

All in all I see the District coming down to Oak Ridge and Powell again. I am not even going to try to predict that much up next year because both teams should be bringing a lot of fire power if Powell turns out to be as good as expected suggested by most of the people close to the program.
