School enrollment numbers are about the same I believe. At least for Gibson County and Peabody went up some jumping from Single A to AA. I just think a lot of these kids had rather do something else than play basketball and football. Now baseball, softball and volleyball numbers are pretty good it seems. How many HS girls dressed out for Westview last year??

20 but had 5-6 not dressed every game. It went down towards the end due to injuries and obviously only 15 got to dress for the state tournament. Then, they only lost 2 from this year and gain 8 from the middle school for next year

GC 10 players last year, USJ 10 or so, TCA 6, Mckenzie maybe 9 or 10, Peabody 9 or 10...Football rosters no where near what it used to be. Some schools doing better than others with numbers.

MTD (Stanley Black and Decker) and UTM are the only thing keeping Westview's numbers up. Are school enrollments dropping in those listed schools too or just athletic rosters?

Numbers are down everywhere in HS sports. Bradford with a great tradition for sure. Never know with every school about these numbers.

Numbers aren't down at Westview...their middle school sends 8-10 kids each year which helps

Didn’t Dyersburg and Covington beat Westview pretty good last year

Yes in the regular season. But once Westview's young kids got the experience from the season, they only lost to Dyersburg by a field goal in the playoffs. Westview was young last year. They will be tough this year

Chattanooga, Chattanooga, Chattanooga...sounds good, but don't count your chickens before they hatch! That last gold ball came in 2A, you guys gotta beat Dyersburg & Covington in your own region before you can make that trip to see Alcoa!

You do know that on a young, down season we only lost to Dyersburg in the playoffs by less than a touchdown?! You act like those two teams are unbeatable and way above our skill level

Good luck to Whites Creek! Rooting for Whites Creek to show 2A what Metro Nashville area has! I wouldn’t pick against them. My pick was them vs Alcoa in the championship.

Douglass will be hard to beat

The question I have is can USJ keep them?  Rumors flying all around West TN about them leaving.

The rumors have flown around for the past two years. They did take one coaching job in middle TN last summer just to change their mind once housing etc. fell through there. I mean it would be nice if she played alongside her cousin Sims at Westview for her senior year next season! :) However, USJ loses only one senior off the state championship team this year so I'm sure their future as a program is promising as well. Haylen and Teague are both freshman and were their leading scorers this season so guess we will see

Westview will be good next year, but I think people are underestimating how important Alexander has been to this team for the last couple years.  She was Westview's best player this year.  Losing her will have a major impact

Not downplaying her at all, but Sims led that team this year with the point guard out. Alexander could have 5 points and Westview still win. If Sims had less than 10 points, then they struggled. Alexander was more of a spot shooter and drove it occasionally. Sims was their leading scorer so I'm not sure you can say that Alexander was their best player. They will definitely miss her sharp shooting next year though and will need someone to fill it

Dealing with Riding will be tough for anyone. When her and the Loretto player was going after the 50/50 ball with about 2 minutes left, I knew she would win the battle. Gibson County will be good again next year if we all stay healthy. We will have about 3 I think from Jr. High including Jada Hart along with our 5 that didn't start. Losing Turner and Micah will be really hard as both were two of the better one's in the state with Turner on defense and Micah on offense. Turner was another PG too. Micah should win Miss Basketball, IMO. She is the all time leader in points at Gibson County. Her rebounding, steals and assists are off the charts too. Westview and Huntingdon will be good as well. Losing the PG from Westview really hurt them. She is the real deal. Hope she  gets healed up quick. I hear they got some more immediate help on the way. Huntingdon is losing Kee and Singleton I know of but they have a great Jr. High I hear with lots of help on the way.

I think Gibson Co will miss Micah more than they realize both offensively and defensively. They will also really miss Turner. I'm not sure any from the Jr. High will be ready to contribute any next year except maybe Hart (I feel like her sisters were a little more aggressive/advanced that she is at this point). The game I saw them play against Martin this year at Martin, Martin won by 20+ and that was because subs were put in or it would have been uglier. Maybe they have improved though. Huntingdon will still be good but I think they will really miss Kee and Singleton as well. Westview getting the point guard back and only losing Alexander from state I think will still be good if not even better than this year.

Yes I agree I think they may be better next season.  Westview lost to Huntingdon this season also.

Yes you’re right. I meant to have them in the list as well with them also being in state tournament

I’m not knocking Westview I just think losing Jada and getting back to state is impressive.

I agree. No one expected it but with Sims and Alexander returning and then throwing others in the mix around them, they were able to pull it off with injuries thrown in there as well. Their only losses were to Gibson Co, South Gibson, Huntingdon, and Loretto who were all in the state tournament and two of them in the championship with one winning it. Next year they will have Sims back and then the freshman point guard who is the real deal and then put a more experienced Trevathan, Evans, and Rogers around them with some other potential contributors coming back and coming up from a strong feeder middle school and they will be tough!

I don’t know about that.  I think Westview overachieved by just getting to state.

Westview lost to Loretto by 5 points without their starting point guard. She doesn’t get hurt and one could argue that those results would have been different

  13. Since when does a player on a team that doesn’t get past the first round get put on all tournament team? A player with 26 points but 8 turnovers? You had others with 23 points and 22 points and 24 points that only had 1-2 turnovers and 8-9 rebounds that didn’t make it past the first round either.

Honestly I thought #1 was the best player for Dburg. She hurt us more than anyone.

She’s a freshman and the coach’s granddaughter. She didn’t shoot great the first two games of the tournament but looked a lot more relaxed tonight in the championship!

It’s blatantly obvious as to what’s going on in this game. Dyersburg drives gets a foul goes to the line. Upperman drives wave off the basket no shot ball out on side or worse yet no call at all. It’s pretty obvious Upperman will have to beat 8 of them to win.

Don’t blame the refs already…it’s both ways
