It started when Public Schools had to do it to compete with the Private Schools. Super Teams like CPA, FRA, and Lipscomb had were starting to dominate in Girls Basketball. Clarkrange has been doing it for a long time though. The best team they ever had (1995) was with 3 girls from Crossville on it. Now it’s out of hand.

I don’t know where you got your info about the 95 team, but the only person that had been from Cumberland Co was Radhika Dishman. She had also suffered multiple ACL injuries. Andrea had attended Crossville for a year, but she sat out a year when she came back. However, she had always been a C-Range kid. I don’t even know who the 3rd person you are talking about.
Also, recruitment is something that is a funny thing. Is it recruitment for a player to see the difference in programs and make a choice when enrolling for high school? Thing about Clarkrange is nothing is guaranteed. You play or ride the pine by what you do, not your last name or donors or whatever. That’s how it was and how I hope it will always be.

Yes, Clarkrange forfeited the game according to the tournament director.

To use the excuse that they can’t play York due to a shooting that happened 40-50 years ago is a pretty poor one. There is no agreement, rule or anything in place saying these two teams can’t play. York has been trying to schedule with Clarkrange for years and years but get turned down every time. The boys even used to scrimmage before the season a few years ago but for some reason the girls never wanted too.

But the bracket for this tournament was put out over a month in advance, they knew there would be a possibility of meeting up with York… I feel bad for the girls from both teams to have this game taken away from them like this. York coaches wanted to play this game but Clarkrange had no intentions of wanting to play at all.

First off, there are untrue statements in this post. I know because I played for Clarkrange and definitely scrimmaged York girls in an official scrimmage. There’s so much bad blood here. Don’t touch it. Those scrimmages always ended with fights, clothing ripped off, and sometimes, injuries. Let it go.

I went to the Tennessee High School web page and they have a vague explanation on how players are selected. Head coaches and media members selected the finalist and sports writers picked the winners. Performance during the 2018 - 2019 REGULAR season, character and academics are used in the selection process.

That sounds nice and all but there are several problems with the explanation. I will just mention the media / sports writers aspect of the process. It is very difficult for a Tri-Cities writer to know what is happening in Memphis and vice versa. Is there a place on the web that has stats on all the players? Can a sports writer call up a high school and ask about a student athlete's character and GPA?

I say all this not to question anyone's judgement. I respect the media and feel they do the best they can. If Jada Guinn from Oak Ridge wins in Class AAA, I will be so proud of her. If she isn't selected then i will send her a tweet saying I am still proud of her and wish her well at Tennessee Tech.

There are massive media packets that are generated and sent as well, essentially highlight clips, print materials, etc. It’s ridiculous because it is somewhat dependent on the individual’s ability to pay for the best materials. Most great players I know don’t really care, even the ones who won. They care about how their team performs. The essence of the award is completely against the team nature. What about amazing players who aren’t prolific scorers? What about ball hogs? What about winning? There are so many ways to skew it, and almost anyone can cut film to look good. Just my opinion, but it’s just one more thing to encourage a distraction from what should be the primary goal. Lots of historically great teams don’t have any or many Miss Basketball nominees, much less winners.

  4. Brittany Cooper plays at Trch right now, and they signed Hannah Garrett this year. Both of those girls are from Clarkrange. However, they are both taller than Pritchett. She’s a very balanced player. Unfortunately, many schools won’t sign players under a certain height unless they are super freaks of nature, exceptionally quick or lots of upside.

  5. Yea, I knew i liked you summit. I heard York had a couple good 8th graders again this year maybe they will stay there after the summer work outs OR NOT. SMH.

This is old, inaccurate, and stupid. Just stop. Neither Jackson County nor Fentress County are zoned. Any kid can go to any school. By the way, when your school is great you don't have to recruit. if you knew the situation at the other school, you would shut your mouth. These schools have great traditions because the best players play. It doesn't matter what your last name is, who your parents are, or how much money you have. Instead of hating, how about just enjoying some great basketball?

  6. Watertown big over Monterey, Crange by as many as they want, same for PC and JC wins by 14. What i cannot understand is how these same teams are playing today that couldn't possibly play yesterday. Not that much has changed but thats just my opinion....

Obviously you have not been aware of the ice and wind storm that toppled over 300 utility poles in the area. Both Hwy 62 and Hwy 127 were impassable for a bus until Monday. Goodpasture still had to exit at Crossville to come up. Also, there was a little issue of no electricity. I still don't have electricity, but you know. No way Clarkrange could travel on Sat or Sunday.

  7. I love basketball and have seen and played with some amazing players. Part of what made them great was how they interacted with their teammates. Sometimes threads like this can be very damaging, particularly to young players, because it places so much emphasis on stat lines and individual accomplishments. Statistically, most people won't play beyond high school. The lessons learned from basketball usually come from putting a group before an individual and fun times on trips, stupid stuff during practice, etc. I've also seen players lose the love of the game due to parental pressures and people in their ear telling them all sorts of nonsense. Please be careful when talking to and posting about young players.

  8. She's definitely a great free throw shooter. This award is basically decided through a publicity campaign. People who want it prepare publicity materials, including but not limited to stats, film, and previous awards. This provides a sampling for voters. It can be an expensive endeavor for students to gather materials and make up that many packets. You also have to know who to send them to. It's impractical to believe that voters could physically see every possible player. There's also the possibility of seeing them on an off night or when they don't play for a substantial amount of time.

  9. No doubt JC will miss the presence of Hensley on inside. However, after watching them this summer there pace of play will be much faster. They now have five who can run the floor every possession. Also, will probably be able to press more on the defensive end. As for clarkrange the word is one of the better guards from crossvile has transferred to the range.

The guard from Crossville played jr. high ball at South Fentress. The other two freshmen are from Fentress County as well.

  10.

Bouldin has had 14 double doubles this season out of 23 games so far

She's a great player, but she's a freshman. She just doesn't have the body of work yet to establish her for Miss Basketball. We played them when she was in Jr. High. Probably the most poised, technically sound, pure shooter I've ever seen at that level. Can't wait to see how she develops...

  11. I don't know how it will pan out, but the ladies from CSAS were amazing on Wed. Some of the best individual athletes I've seen at this level. They were fast, had great body control, and technically sound defense. It was enjoyable to watch them play. Although they are great individual players, there isn't a lot of team offense, i.e. no set plays, just taking people to the hole. Don't know if they will be able to overcome some of the other teams, but phenomenal to watch. Congrats on a poised 1st appearance at Murphy Center. I can see how they beat a good RBS squad. Will be interesting to see if they can force tempo and how other teams adjust.

  12. Just curious........why did Coalfield's two best players (Jordan and Jones) take the fewest shots? Did Jackson Co. concentrate their defensive effort on those two. Sounds like Landrum had a lot of looks, but the basket got lost in the vastness of the Glass House! Excellent game plan by Brown.....it appears he used his teams resources to stop Jordan and Jones.

I would suspect AJ got frustrated around the second quarter and that is all she wrote! She might never reach this stage again......gotta show when the lights go on! Good player, but without more maturity it will be hard for her to reach Division I. That s going to be pretty much up to her. How many girls from this District have ever reached Division I anyways? (B. Laxton, K. Boyatt, K. Christopher, Hall)

Nice ride Jackets.....keep your head up!

    Kaz

Actually, Jim Brown didn't really concentrate too much on Jordan. Jordan was lackluster all day long. I had seen her play quite a bit and had been really impressed with her potential. She just never showed up. There was no hustle, no spark whatsoever. All of the other players really played hard, and that made her lack even more obvious. If someone were going to beat Jackson Co., yesterday may have been the best shot. They really were off their game. If Jordan had shown up, they could have had a chance. The Jones kid was all heart, played half the game with her head bleeding so severely that they had to change the bandages during the game. Could have really been time for some of Coalfield's players to shine. However, took a massive effort for them to get there, period, going from 3rd in the district to the state tourney is impressive.

p.s. I really was pulling for you all to shake up the Glass House......!

  13. Coach Hubert Lester will be conducting spring practice the next two weeks. he is passing out equipment this week. He has done a good job holding the program together. Whoever gets the job should be thankful to Lester. He will make someone a great assistant. Maybe Clarkrange should start a football program???

Didn't mean to strike a nerve! I knew someone would make this a "us against them" topic. Didn't know I said anything negative, just stating the obvious.

Even with Hubert doing the offseason, there is an uncertainty with the kids not knowing. Sometimes they get frustrated and don't always do what they should. My statement was about the program not failing, not about the schools. Also not knowing what changes are going to occur with the offense and defense would seem like it would be a concern. They are learning what they have ran, not what they will run.

I hope they do what's best for the kids.

  14. York Institute will have spring practice 5-11 to 5-21 finishing with a scrimage with Clay County on 5-21. New kids are coming out and and will get needed experiance this spring. Will work on football basics while running a reduced verison of the offense and defense from last year. Have set up a work out schedule for the summer.

    Hubert Lester

Good deal, glad someone is keeping things together and keeping the kids on track.

  15. Is spring practice over? If so how did that go and if not when is it? How are things going down in Jamestown?

They haven't had spring practice. Time is now against next year's team. There is still no coaching hire and don't know if one is in sight. Hope it happens soon, so the kids can get back on track.

  16. I don't know about this situation with CD, but I will say in response to an earlier post that a lot of good players go to York because they may not get to play at CR. They know if they come south they will have to work for their positions. Not much politics on the south end. We just want to win, and luckily, that's the coach's primary objective as well.

  17. Not sure if I can post this here..if I am in the wrong area please feel free to move.

I am looking for individual summer camps for my 8 year old daughter. I have searched the web but came up empty. It can be co-ed. We have several parents of younger children that are interested. If you know of any please let me know.

Lipscomb University in Nashville has the best fundamental camp in the area (imo). They emphasize proper shooting technique, defense, and passing and rebounding skills. Kids are grouped by age and can "play up" an age group if they want to or are more advanced. It is pricey but worth the money. A lot of camps just group into teams and play games, but at Lipscomb you only play one game a day. The bulk of the time is spent on fundamentals. I haven't been around the camp for a while, but it's where I went from age 8 through high school. I went to lots of other camps too (individual, team, and position play) but Lipscomb was were I really grew. They are extremely strict and enforce discipline corporately. However, if your daughter is just starting out or isn't super committed yet, lots of schools have local camps, and practically every college has a camp (Roane State, TTU, UT, Austin Peay, etc.). Keep looking and you can find the one that fits your price and basketball needs.
