I agree. Matt isn't just going to come in and suddenly win 8-9 games a year. It took him a number of seasons before they really hit their stride during his first tenure.

Agree totally. That's true. They went to the playoffs his first couple of seasons, but were at around .500 seems like. They had an 8-3 team in 2008, but really got things going in 2010 & 2011.

If they can make the Playoffs early on this time around, that'd be a big success, in my opinion. I do hope that the community and fans give him time to get things where he wants them to be. There are some tough opponents on the schedule, as mentioned above.

Not to say that there aren't any great athletes playing for the Panthers now, but Mobley, McPhetridge or the Owenby's won't be at his first team meeting. I'll also be interested to see who all his assistant coaches will be.

I talked to him last night.  The principal thing isn't a done deal yet.  He wants to go in the administrative direction, but as he told me it's up to the decision of the powers that be downtown at this point.

JD did a really good job at Halls, in my opinion.  He brought the program back to a competitive state.  He's leaving his successor in good shape.  JD is one of the guys I have really enjoyed dealing with during his tenure at Halls.

I have talked to a couple of guys who plan on applying for that position.  There will be interest from some solid football coaches.

Interesting that the Gibbs, Halls, and Powell jobs all came open this year.  A definite new direction in North and Northeast Knox County.

I also think he did a great job at Halls. I remember they were awful when he took over, but gradually they improved into a Playoff team. I've known JD since I was in High School. He's a great person. I hope he gets a Principal job.

Were Gibbs, Halls & Powell the only Head Coaching jobs that came open in Knoxville/Knox Co this year?

He was a great coach and his daughter was a great player at Oak Ridge. Lets break up the Gruesome Twosome at Campbell County and place one at Powell.

He seems like a really good guy & I wish him all the best both personally & professionally. I'm not sure what Campbell Co. pays, but Knox Co. has notoriously low pay. I have no way of knowing this, but I can't help but think that they have great job security at Campbell Co., while Powell has gone through coaches quite often. As a former player/graduate of Powell, I'd love for Powell to get someone who will stick around for a long time though.

Actually, going back even before South-Young were South High and Young High.

South High went by the Rockets, red and white if memory serves, and Young High was the Yellow Jackets, and they were orange and black, again if memory serves.

South and Young merged in to a new building in, and I believe this is correct, in the 1976-1977 school year. They were the Trojans.

Don't remember what year South-Young and Doyle merged to become South Doyle. There are still some bad feelings from some Young High grads that their name was left completely off of the new school.

Doyle, as you said, were the Pioneers and were red and possibly gold?

Holston went by Warriors, and were blue and gold, again if memory serves.

Rule was light blue and gold.

If I'm not mistaken, South-Young and Doyle merged for the 1991-1992 school year. 1990-1991 was the final year that Rule High School was open, I believe.

It's been several years since I drove past it, but the Rule High School building was still standing, as well as their football  stadium and scoreboard. I guess most students that would've gone to Rule ended up at Knoxville West or Austin East.

  5. Oak Ridge gave Powell all they wanted and more that year. If not for an incredible game by Mobley and our starting QB going out with a bruised kidney before the half I go out on a limb and say we win that game, but it wasn't meant to be.

Quite frankly, I agree with you on that. The Oak Ridge QB was a beast. I remember that was a Thursday game that was on TV & I'll admit that Powell had some luck on their side that night.

  6. That truly was a great team that Powell had in 2011. I will never forget that game. It was more than just Mobley, that QB (McPhetridge?) and their defense were exceptionally solid as well. That was a knock 'em down, drag out dog fight. Iincredible football game between two great teams.

That's correct, his name was McPhetridge. Henry County had a great team, as well. Most notably that really tough running back. That Defense was excellent too. Powell hadn't been held to under 21 all season until the State Championship. Turnovers were probably the key to that game. The following season ended after a hard fought 32-27 loss at Columbia Central.

  7. Yep.  Lee bought a home here and lives in Knoxville in the offseason.  He's been back and forth from here to Buffalo for the Bill's mini camp stuff.

Lee has come a long way in his personal life.  He has 3 sons now and gives a ton of his time to local groups both here and in Buffalo.  He's one of the few guys who had some serious self inflicted problems, but has completely done a 180 in his life.

And, yet, he's huge and can run and catch the football.

I made a point to buy a Lee Smith #85 Bills jersey to represent a Panther who has done really great things. I know that he was on ESPN's "Come On Man!" segment when he scored a TD against the Rams in the 2012 season, then jumped into the stands, especting them to catch him. Instead, they moved out of the way and he landed on the seats. Having seen several Bills games live at Ralph Wilson Stadium from 2007-2010, I'm a bit surprised that they didn't try to catch him. Despite the team generally struggling for 15 seasons or so, the fans up there are very passionate. I'm glad that Lee is doing very well both on and off the field.

  8. Yes.  He decided to transfer to D1-AA Eastern Kentucky so he could play immediately and not have to sit out a transfer year as he would have if he were to transfer to another D1-A school.

No sinister story behind the transfer.  Simply a conflict with coaches and how they used his talents.  Dy'shawn worked hard and it was evident that he had the ability to play at UK, but the UK coaching staff chose to give the available snaps to the guys they recruited over the guys Joker Phillips' staff recruited.

Dy'shawn will fit in to Eastern Kentucky's offensive system really well.  They run a similar system to what he was in at Powell High.  It's a great opportunity for him, and a great opportunity for Dy'shawn to be able to earn his undergraduate degree in 4 years.

I look forward to seeing him play at EKU.

I'd like to see him play next year. I'm excited to see what Coach Allen has to bring to the table at Powell. Stability is definitely needed and important for the Panthers.

  9. Coach Rang is a very good coach and young man. I have known him for a long time. Has great parents. I would not be shock if he ended up on the Maryville staff

I only knew him last year, but was very impressed. Seemed like a great guy, as well as very good coach. I wish him the best in the future. I fully support Coach Kilgore, but wish that Coach Rang could have stayed around for a long time.

  10. Gang tackles are difficult to be 100% accurate on, but I do the best I can with them. Thankfully for me, I don't keep defense for a school with numbers that are difficult to see. I also do the first man to make contact gets credit for a tackle, while others that hit the ballcarier afterwards are credited with an assist.

  11. 1990, 1991, 1992, 2010, 2011 Powell. 90 went undefeated in Regular Season , but lost in the Second Round to Gatlinburg Pittman. 91 lost to Brentwood Academy in the State Championship Game. 92 lost to Marion County 7-6 in the Semifinals. Marion County went onto beat Brentwood Academy in the State the following week.

1996 Halls- undefeated til the State vs Pearl Cohn. Buck Fitzgerald, John Henderson & Santonio Beard were the top players for Pearl Cohn.

1997 Maryville- same as Halls. John Henderson dominated that game.

  12. IMO Powell peaked too early last season. They came out of the gates on "fire" last season and with injuries and other things going on cooled way down there at the end of the season. They need to find their pace, and if they do could be a very dangerous team this coming up year.

That sounds right. Anderson County has given them problems for years & it's hard to beat a team twice in the same season. The Playoff loss wasn't too surprising, even after the blowout win over them in the early season.
