  1. My question is....will Farragut be patient enough to pound the ball with Purty and other backs. If Maryville has a weakness, and thats a big IF, its stopping the run. Run effectively, shorten the game, control the ball, avoid turnovers. Hard to do at the HS level.

Maryville 28, Farragut 24 in one heckuva ballgame.

  2. I am surprised the 2 two teams have played that many times. Thanks for the update!

I have only seen Maryville on TV against OR. Look like a typical Maryville team. Fundamental, QB with good downfield vision, and adequate defense. I did see what appeared to be a few seams in the pass defense against OR.

I have seen Bearden once in person. Looks like they win with defense this year. Plenty of speed, fly to the ball, only 3 DB's may make pass d a little challenging. The RB is quick and elusive, but has been bottled up a little. The QB is smallish, but has good feet and isnt careless with the ball.

Both teams excel in kicking game.

With the high rankings, this should be a barn burner!

  3. Maybe against a weak West team, FHS can work in the Van Dyne wrinkle. Maybe not politically correct, but would it be the "VD Gun"?

As a West fan I sure hope the Admirals have this attitude going into the game. West is not weak. They came off an emotionally draining week with the Jake Logue situation and the HVA game and walked into a hornets nest with an 0-1 Maryville. They played uninspired in the first half but in the second half they ended up tying Maryville. I'm not saying West will win, but if Farragut is thinking like that they may be in for a wake up call.

    Boot,

I didn't mean any disrespect, just my observations. I saw West against south, and was less than impressed. I saw Farragut against Catholic, and was impressed with offense, but not impressed with their D. I dont think West has an "identity" offensively, and given that they historically are around 5-5, i see this one going Farragut's way pretty easy. Just my opinion.

  4. Is Julian in trouble? I know last year Halls "had the best team in school history" according to some and finished with a horrible record. I don't think they have a win this year. Is change a foregone conclusion?

Thats a bitter pill to swallow for a proud program with a strong history of winning

  5. I have tried to see as many Knoxville teams as i could over the first four weeks and here are my random thoughts in no order:

Farragut: Big QB with good vision. Like to use power running game. Decent up front on both sides of line. Struggle to cover passes. Van Dyne gives a nice change at QB. Good team, don't see them running the table. A good passing team may light them up unless LB's and secondary improves. Probably a deep playoff run, but doubt they get to M'boro.

Catholic: The adjustment to the spread is going better than i thought. Athletic QB. Big up front. Too many players going both ways. Endurance is questionable. Have to avoid injuries. Moving up to 5A will stop the run early in playoffs

West: Look to be young. Struggle in running game, but seem committed to it. Impressive athlete at TE, but underutilized. Like Farragut, can't defend the pass. Good kickers. Not much else good about this team. A winning record would be an achievement.

Webb: Losing Blance hurts. Athletic and being private (recruiting) gives them a hge advantage over teams they are playing. Athletic enogh to make deep run , and possible bring a gold ball back to west Knoxville.

AE: A good team. Athletes all over the field. Probably better than Catholic, but came up just short. How they respond will be key. Improve kicking, control turnovers, and this is a good team.

Fulton: Not a typical Fulton team. A playoff apperance would be a surprise to me.

Bearden: Slow starters. Getting behind against a good team will be different than falling behind William Blount or Rhea County. Lots of yards after catch. Teams selling out to stop the RB allows QB to dink and dump. Defense flys to ball. 21 is good player. Smallish QB may hurt them if teams force him to stay in pocket. Playoff team, early exit.

Just my thoughts. Fans of schools, let me know your thoughts.

  6. i like Bearden in this one. The Bearden offense makes you take chances. Do you sell out to stop the run? or do you pressure the QB? While this QB is smallish, the offense allows him to get to the edge where he has good field vision.

The Bearden program has posted some impressive numbers over the last few years, 7 wins 3 yrs ago, then 12 wins two yrs ago, and then 8 wins last year in a "rebuilding" year. And now 2-0 with no touchdowns given up.

This is a team to be watched.
