  1. The application list for Smith County HS will be quite long if it does indeed become available. I will take no part in piling on a coach who is being hammered on here. I will say that Smith County has always been a very attractive job since Rankin was there and made it a successful program in the '80s.

Well, lets look at some reasons why the application list could be long:

1). Only had three seniors starting on offense

2). Only had two or maybe three seniors starting on defense

3). Coaching supplements upgraded last year and now VERY competitive if not ahead of    surrounding schools

4). Outstanding facilities "THE HOLE". Beautiful field, new lights, new visitor bleachers seats 1000,

5). One of the best Boosters club in TN that does NOT try to tell coaches how to run the program

6). In just the past few years some of the accomplishments of the booster club with ZERO, NO help from the county: Beautiful indoor practice facility, with turf, many colleges would love to have this facility, new field house, new baseball field, new softball field, concession stand and bathrooms on visitor side. Many more achievements by the booster club, charter buses is another, that are structure facilities and many, many smaller achievements. As does most schools, additional coaching supplements paid to coaches run thru school to be legal.

Attractive job? you decide. Discipline in school system very good backed by DOS and BOE. I could go on and on but I think you get the situation. Gary Rankin started the tradition several years back follow by Jimmy Maynord. Ripe, prime territory!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I think they where pretty darn good myself. I was there and those plays where definitely the difference, but oh well.

Also, Wilmore, our TB, had an asthma attack and had to leave the game when we were on MC's one yard line and the replacement missed the hole and was stopped one yard short which would have won the game also.

  3. He played last week and looked good.

with the offense that York runs, you must have two quick guards a good fullback that can mesh good with the qb and good deception. with the qb back and a game experience York could be hard to contain. LB's can't get caught up looking into the backfield and not reading keys. The guards will take you to the ball unless you false key. Should be a good game.

  4. 1.Squatch: After the win over DC Squatch secures a number 1 spot in this weeks rankings

2.DC: The loss of Jennings probably did them in put remains in the 2nd spot

    3. Smith Co: They have been competitive with most of the region and when is the last time Upperman has beat them at home? Not since my brain was mature enough to remember at least.

    4. Upperman: See #3, clinched a playoff spot tonight for the 4th straight year and is reason to celebrate. We no longer suck every year.

    5. York: I'm surprised that they didn't win more region games and believe they let the beginning of the season get them down.

    6. Grundy: Much improved and hopefully they can keep enough players from moving to other schools to be competitive in the future.

    7. Cannon: Improved as well compared to past seasons but will have have the same progression to make any noise next season.

Where is Upper Cumberland Man? Has he left town?

  5. Opinions are a great thing... I believe 6 and number 3 both have the size, speed and skill to play at some size D-1 program. They both are juniors and are improving and getting stronger by leaps. But my main point is there the two best athletes on our side and not used in four downs.

You are correct on the offensive side but lets also look on the defensive side of the ball. We HAVE TO ADJUST while on the field and at half time. Our opponent will find a soft spot and pound us all night and we won't adjust. Every team we have played this year has done this to us and we haven't adjusted yet. Granted with Goolsby, three year junior starter at fullback and middle linebacker, out could have played a part against D.C., but that calls for more adjustments to help cover for the freshman who took his place on both sides of the ball.

  6. I hope that's not the case. Prayers for the young man and his family.

Back before the season started I said I hope he stayed healthy with no injuries to cause any problem with his baseball scholarship. For us 'old farts' we remember Dizzy Dean and his injury and what it caused.

  7. listen at this propoganda!

Oh my goodness, I thought we got rid of you!!!!!! Just kidding little buddy. Hey, did you know the two guys that got killed Sat. afternoon from Westmoreland in the wreck in Macon Co.? I think I knew one of them. That was a bad situation. Sorry for the families.

  8. The two wins DC has over SC in the Jennings era have been from spreading the field getting defense out of the box and him running not from throwing. SC has the two best pure athletes on either team but they don't touch the ball every play. I think it comes down to pressure on DC QB and turnovers. Game is a toss up but Go Owls!

This will be the forth time we have played against Jennings. I would say that will help us a lot but we are so young many of our players were in Jr. high during the years SC played DC with Jennings at QB. I think SC wins a close one.

  9. There's a reason kids who are capable of leaving the mountain are. Better get that problem fixed in a hurry. Ain't nobody gotta recruit them boys, they leaving on their own.

The MOUNTAIN vs. The VALLEY. You folks really go after each other ie. HATFIELD vs. McCOYS. LOL

  10. I would pick York a slight favorite over Smith.

Hmmmm: Seq. started 10 seniors and one jr. against Smith and Smith started either two or three seniors. Smith only has either 4 or 5 seniors on the team. I heard one sr., who didn't start, quit so I don't know for sure how many we have. At the half it was 6-0 Seq. and near the end of the game Seq. was up 19 to 14 with Smith trying an onside kick for the win. Seq. sure didn't score 35 points and pull their starters against Smith. Granted Seq. has a very good team in all aspects and should have won for they were the better team and the best team in the region. Each game Smith is playing better as the youth start to jell while learning to shave. If I were an opposing team, I would hope that I had already played Smith. I am not boasting when I say that, I am only reflecting Smith's young team starting to not play like Freshmen, even though we have freshmen starting and some are first subs for the starters. Who knows, we may lose the remaining games but IF we continue to improve we could rattle some chains.

  11. I spoke with someone close to the Monterey head coach, he is married to Baxter girl, and he said that the state wouldn't allow them to fill up the swamp land on that side of the field to place bleachers.

when we (SC) put in our visitors bleachers we had a ton of problems with the state. There is a creek that runs behind and under the bleachers and some kind of a snail fish lived in the creek. the construction to replace the bleachers was "going to upset the habitat of the snail". For a while it seemed we would not get the new bleachers put in but the state rep. was retiring and he finally approved the bleachers with SC making improvements behind the bleachers and even had to go a distance below the bleachers off the school property to make improvements. The bank behind the bleachers, you have noticed, has been cleaned off and trees planted. That was one of the agreements that had to be met. This land is not school property but the State got permission from landowner to make said improvements. Yes !!!!! the State can cause problems.

  12. The remoteness (mountain) of Monterey makes it difficult to send kids there. I doubt there are many from there going to Cookeville or Upperman.

That is correct - don't see many kids traveling to Monterey from Baxter. Also look at the geographical shape of Putnam and traveling east to west would invoke several miles, a lot of travel time and poor road conditions in winter.

  13. and again Putnam builds for the current situation and doesn't look to build for the future....

Putnam Co. does not zone and that could be the answer but to start a zoning program you have to have space in other schools to take the overflow which is not the case in Putnam. New building program will be the only solution for Putnam.

  14. I don't know of any public school with turf paid for by the school system. That is not likely to happen. Our indoor practice facility was paid for by boosters (close to $1 mil). Our field house was paid for by boosters. The new visitors stands were paid for by the school system. Of course...when we did that...Gordonsville got them also. They did need new bleachers because their homeside was condemned. They also got an indoor baseball/softball facility.

When you are winning especially...it is beneficial to expand. A lot of SC fans used to stay at home when they played at the U because there is no place to sit. The expansion there would pay for itself.

At SC the new lighting on both fields was paid for by the county. The new baseball field and softball field at SC was paid for by boosters. The boosters at SC will have both fields lit before long. Our boosters take pride and really support SC as you can see.
