  1. Game day folks, if you attend a game tonight please provide district score updates.

Many posters picking a toss-up between Macon and Smith. I have a feeling Macon will have trouble stopping 4 very good running backs. I also realize Macon has a very dangerous QB. That will be the key to the game - I feel SC can slow down the QB to give them a chance go win. Expecting a good crowd.

  2. L.A. plays tough, i watched five games in person the year they went 5-5 and won state. I also think they are a good tackling team, this Cak game should be close.

Years ago when coach Derwood Vaughn was basketball coach, and a very good one, he would not allow his basketball players to play football. The player had to make a choice. Most chose basketball, which in fact hurt the football team and kept LA from having a long tradition of having very good teams. During football season you could drive thru town and kids would be playing basketball rather than playing football in the backyard. I remember talking with coaches that LA would be a sleeping giant if players could play both sports. Those of you who knew Coach Vaughn knew better than question that storrid stare, look, that he would give you. Didn't say much, but didn't have to. Not many Coach Vaughn's left .

  3. any chance Smith Co ever consoidating into a 925-975 4a school? In 2012, a combined Smith Co could have give Fulton a run for thier money.

Nope - tried a couple times but failed. The school board voted to combine the schools but the commissioners left it up to the people for a vote and it failed twice. Since then a major building program concluded with a new HS at G'ville and renovation at SC. Never seen a body of water, Cumberland River, separate a county as it does here.

  4. I agree with DCTIGERFAN that if SC wins less than 5 games with this heavy senior squad and easier schedule there will be people calling for coach's head. A healthy team last year beat Gordonsville, UHS, and York. Everyone keeps talking about CC loss but we had a bunch of starters out and I remember one of the coaches saying we dropped 7 first down passes and 2 TD passes. Just one of those games the WR's could not catch a cold and line was mainly JV so no run game. Same thing at Macon...winning TD pass dropped last drive, Warren County loss was coaching error. Coach Maynord knew our line was going to be down a couple years and to put Alcoa and Cookeville on our schedule was settting us up to fail. I think other than a repeated severe injury season there is no reason SC does not win at least 6 games.

SC Board of Education has just recently updated the coaching supplements for head coaches and assistants. Very competitive and will definitely be a plus in getting attention from coaches should a position become available. My understanding is that it is higher than surrounding systems plus a cost of living increase each year. Supplement will increase each year and stay competitive each year.

  5. no clue on that confrence, way before my time. UH will fill Smith's pain this year playing Cookeville. Should be Cookeville's most talented to every from top to bottom.

    1) Upper Cumberland Conference. 2) Cumberland Valley Conference (with Gordonsville and Trousdale added). Were known as UCC and CVC conferences.

  6. I trust your opinion on this: If Creasey, Rankin, or Maynord was hired today to be head coach of Smith Co......how long till SC would be back to 9-10 win regular seasons and will this coaching staff get to that point? I think if Maynord had not left, Smith would have been 8-2 in 2013, 8-2 in 2014 with both years going to at least the second round of playoffs.

Good points - can't disagree with a word you said.

  7. I was curious as to whether they will be a factor at all in the district this year.

SC will be improved this year. Not world beaters. Should beat CC this year. They will have the best stable of running backs I can remember. Soph. QB that is not very big but can make things happen. Receivers are very capable as most return. LB's all return. I felt the DB's would be our strong point but they need to improve as I think they will. OL and DL seems to be the nemesis of most clubs. No difference here. It is easy to say injuries killed us last year, but those of you  who know our program know our situation last year as so many players were hurt. One game last year we had nine starters out. Many of the replacements were forced replacements and not proven to be a backup. So, will the players who were forced to play last year step it up and be a player or still be learning the game of football? Good luck to all teams and try to stay injury free.

  8. With the new middle school being built at UH they will be moving on up the next classification. If I am not mistaken it is being built for 1200 kids. Question for you old timers: How many of you remember "Baxter Seminary"? Also, who was the football coach?

  9. I still think UHS or DC wins the district and they both handle Seq Co. Its just UH's OL/DL does not appear to be near as good as the skill positions will be. DC should be solid, not great, but solid all around and add a big time arm in QB Jennings...could be enough to win the district.

  10. I have wondered the same thing. 2010-2012 they were on here in hoards.......now I rarely see them.

Well 'ole Scoot' finally turned on his computer. Looks like UCM, and the DeKalb boys and York have been carrying the load this summer. I hear that SC will be strong in the skilled positions but the line is the question mark. Skilled positions are quality two deep.   We have three linemen returning and could have a frosh to step in and play. Will get into names later as they appear on the depth chart.

  11. Scooter, are you sure Smith County is going to field a team? I heard they though twice about it after getting thumped by Cannon cowardly lions.

Reckon we could borrow a few guys so we can field a team? Don't know for sure if we will be able to have enough players to field a team. Yep, we got thumped by CC and if we don't improve they will do it again. So maybe, just maybe we can find enough guys to field a team.

  12. They lost one offensive lineman 99% of the online were sophomores, Qb was sophomore, return most of the starting defense as well. The thing I like is they have a whole off season in coach Wrights schemes. I am hoping for a good year from the Dragons. From talking to some of the boys they have made great gains in the weight room as well that will help tremendously.

Looks like most teams have a good nucleus to work from. York returns more than I thought. DC, UHS seem to have some quality players returning to build on. SC, well I don"t know. If you get beat by CC it really leaves a sour taste on your mouth. All, and backups, in the backfield will be back except the QB. He will be replaced by an athlete. He is the nephew of assistant coaches, Brian and Brett Hackett. He will be a soph and can run and throw. Was a starter on defense last year as a frosh. All but one receiver will be back, DB's will be in good shape expecially with the transfer. LB's will all return. I guess like most teams, quality linemen are at a premium. We will be in decent shape there but with the movement of some starters in other positions to move to linemen to get experience might be in the tea leaves. Signs of a decent team are there and who knows, we might surprise some people next year, might even beat CC. Good luck to all teams and hope all are able to keep teams together during the rest of the year and summer.
