  1. Using the logic of enrollment equaling success on the football field would seem to mean the ten largest universities (az st, ohio state, central fla, minnesota, texas, florida, texas a&m, michigan state, penn state, and illinois) should be top ten football powers (or at least some of them) - and last time i checked (2 minutes ago) not one of them is ranked in the top ten and only 3 make the top 20 in BCS rankings.

Now, on to the MBA vs. B game.....I hope the red team wins.

I don't think that is a good analogy as all DIA schools have an equal number of scholarship athletes - 85. Intuitively, you would think a school with 600 male students would have an advantage over a school with 200 male students. However, some of the smaller enrollment schools do a great job of attracting a few top athletes to make up for the difference in numbers.

  2. It says a lot about Baylor to be able to compete with the other schools in D2 when they have the lowest male enrollment of anyone in the conference.

Might want to check your facts on this statement. I believe BGA, BA, and Ensworth have fewer male students than Baylor.

  3. I don't always agree with everything you post, but I think in this case you're dead on. The money issue is the driving force on a lot of really bad decisions, starting with the idea that a relatively small state can somehow justify 8 state champions. And the whole idea of a state championship from a pool of 11 teams is beyond ludicrous.

It is ridiculous that every team makes the playoffs. If you are a bad team don't you just want the season to be over rather than having to play a BA, Ensworth, or Baylor a second time? Your 6 team scenario makes a lot of sense and I would have the championship game November 17th (somewhere other than Cookeville). Many of these kids wrestle or play basketball so would benefit those athletes.

  4. Repo, I wouldn't say we're troubled by it; after all, BA won the game handily. It was just odd.

After I saw players slipping on every play, I picked up a piece of turf where I was standing beyond the end zone. It was very wet. I can't speak to mud on jerseys; I can tell you firsthand how the grass felt.

None of it matters. It was an easy win for BA and I don't believe BGA would stoop to such tactics.

Dew sets in by the second half and will cause the field to be wet. Can we move on from Turfgate??

  5. You are right--I shouldn't have said that. Sorry, I apologize to BGA. But why was the field so wet?

I don't know the irrigation schedule but there is a problem with the turf tearing away. It obviously did not give the home team an advantage. Thanks for the apology. Pictures of the field and the game are here: www.bgapix.com.

  6. Did anyone else attending the game think it odd that BGA's field was SOAKED? We haven't had rain in days, but you would have thought the midstate had suffered through a week's worth of rain. Pretty bush league on BGA's part if they did that to slow BA down. However, maybe someone accidently turned the sprinklers on for the last 10 days.

The field was fine. Given BA outweighs BGA about 50 lbs. a man across the line wouldn't poor footing help the bigger team? I would say your moronic conspiracy theory is pretty bush league.

  7. So far I've heard about the MBA freshman football as one of the best football teams MBA has had at that level in quite some time. Apparently the new Coach Euverard has a very good son as well as very good backs behind him. Mike Lacey has been getting some PT on varsity and TJ jefferson is a bull between the tackes... Owen Powell is an all around stud on the end. Their line is aprox. 240 on average.

I hear JPII's fourth grade team is tearing it up this year...

  8. Are you being sarcastic? If not, I think you are selling several very talented players from BGA down the river with this statement.

BGA lacks depth but certainly not talent. Other than having a huge, powerful offensive line, where did MBA have more talent? Wide receiver, running back, defensive back, linebacker? I believe BGA was more talented at these positions.

  9. "Wow - 5 games as a varsity QB and you have an offer from a DI college...interesting."-- Shakininthefat

Pretty interesting recruiting by Louisville, if they are offering players after 5 games, and having less passing yards than the other QB's in the rest of the League (The Tennesseean). Not saying its impossible, but ive been around highschool football for a long time, and have never heard of that.

You may have been around high school ball a long time but you are not up to date on college recruiting. Kids are being offered after their Sophomore and junior years. The Ramsey kid at BA was offered by Tennessee this summer. That was before the Junior receiver had played one down of high school football. a kid who doesn't go to a college camp or play before his senior year has very little chance of earning a scholarship in D1.

  10. BGA is as good as their QB...end of story.

The BGA defense is not at the Baylor or BA level yet. But if their defense gives up lots of points then the BGA offense (QB) can counter by putting up points and keep games close.

MBA had the right game plan to keep him off the field. They just didn't execute the game plan.

A team with Good ball control will beat BGA.

Shakin, I don't think you are giving the defense the credit they deserve. The first team defense has given up one TD in the last 4 games..that is pretty good. They are certainly a bend but don't break system.. MBA was shut out in the second half (meaningless TD with 6 seconds left). Also creating a lot of turnovers.

  11. Not trying to get too far off topic but I would NEVER play a private school if I were a public one. Why flaunt your talent out in front of the private school? That's begging them to recruit your best players, and I definitely wouldn't play a private school so close in proximity. Then you really do have to deal with kids jumping ship because it would be such an easy transition from a home that is already close to the private school. That's just my opinion.

Just for the record, the games between FHS and BGA the last two years resulted in no FHS players transferring to BGA. It would not be an easy transition because the player would have to sit out one year. Did you not realize a player loses one year of eligibility if he transfers? That prevents your scenario from taking place. FHS plays BGA, and usually wins, in basketball every year. The question is why did they elect not to play

BGA in football if, as the poster stated, the coaches desired as tough a schedule as possible.

  12. Since you seem quite the connoisseur of financial aid, then you no doubt understand that under Section 16 of the TSSAA rules, financial aid may be awarded on the basis of need, but proof of such need must be filed in the TSSAA office on forms approved by the Executive Director and that in order to determine the basis for need, all schools awarding financial aid shall use one of the following services in order to determine the basis for need: FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment (FACTS), Financial Aid for School Tuition (FAST), School and Student Scholastic Service for Financial Aid (SSS), Family Financial Needs Assessment (FFNA), Private School Aid Services, or Smart Tuition Aid. Schools must choose one of the companies for all student-athletes. Moreover, I am certain that you are also aware that a committee consisting of School Heads from Division II schools and one ex-officio, non-voting member from the Board of Control and Legislative Council will meet and make recommendations to the Board of Control on each student submitted. In addition, this committee will collect information from schools regarding financial aid statistics, grant procedures, and the overall financial aid program within the school. The Board of Control will then rule on all cases at the August meeting. The Board of Control shall have authority to reject the basis of need for students when in its opinion, or in the opinion of the school committee, the amount of need stated by the financial service cannot be justified.

If you have trouble understanding the above, it means that financial aid at all Division 2 schools is overseen and approved by a single committee each year. In other words, the same committee that rules on Ensworth aid also rules on aid to students at BA, MBA, BGA, MUS, Baylor, McCallie, CBHS, Knoxville Webb, DCA, USN, etc. I am sure that your allegation that this committee, comprised of the school heads of each of the Division 2 schools, favors Ensworth over all other D2 schools is based on solid evidence. Have you perhaps uncovered some dastardly plot by which Ensworth is bribing the heads of BA, MBA, and all of these other schools to put their own schools at a competitive disadvantage??? Or perhaps you are aware that they are all dull-witted and have been duped by the evil geniuses at Ensworth? Please, please share with us your evidence - if what you say is true, this will absolutely rock the D2 world.

Robin, how do you think Ensworth compares with other DII schools in regard to the amount of financial aid they award athletes? I am just curious if there is any correlation between the amount of money paid out in financial aid and won-loss record. I am not suggesting EHS or any other school is doing anything illegal. I would just like to know if, like major league baseball, the team with the highest payroll wins at a higher rate. I could be off base here but these numbers should be available to the public. Also, I wish some posters would stop asking for proof that DII schools recruit. Of course they recruit. How else would they attract students? I am certain that recruiting is not a violation provided it is done within the rules i.e. a coach can't approach an athlete at a middle school game. And just because a committee rules on the aid an athlete can be awarded, that does not mean the authorized amount is actually paid by the parents. The recent MBA disclosure is a good example that athletes may be receiving more help than is authorized by the committee.

  13. The Franklin coaches went after a great schedule, and it blows Centennials out of the water.

I respectfully disagree with the above statement. BGA begged Franklin to continue the series and were turned down. It was a great community event the last two years between the two oldest schools in Williamson County. I know for a fact that BGA requested the game long before Franklin's schedule was set and were turned down by Franklin. Instead of FHS, BGA had to travel to Smyrna for week zero.

  14. Come on......just bc Smyrna lost to BGA doesnt make BGA great......who says Smyrna is all that good? You beat Ravenwood....who says they are any good this year..... They BOTH have had some great years in D1......but that doesnt make them the defining schools of D1.......been a LONG time for BGA to do something......lets see. Who knows.....Ive been wrong before.....

Actually.....just looked at your schedule.....you guys are gonna get rocked....have fun with the D1 teams.....not that easy in DII

Did you even read the previous posts before your little rant? Nobody claimed BGA is great b/c they beat Smyrna and Ravenwood. Someone asked if they are good this year. Usually a team that makes it to the semi-finals and returns 8 or 9 starters on each side of the ball is good. In addition to a strong senior class, BGA has upgraded their coaching staff. Schedule is always tough in DIIAA but BGA is looking forward to the challenge.

  15. Shooter if you don't know by now, you soon will. Bachelor #2 is throughly capable of making himself look like a idiot, needs very little help. I saw your photos from Smyrner. Good stuff but when the sun goes down at Smyrner everything changes. Red Green Blue, Red Green Blue, Red Green Blue!!!! :popcorneater:

You were right about the lights. I gave up shooting in the second half.

  16. no its not, and everyone knows it. CC knows it too and thats why this will be his last season. Word is out that this is his swan song at FHS. He sees the handwriting on the wall, just like so many others do.

It is what it is. Talent comes and goes. Programs rise and fall. This is the last chance at a decent season for several years to come, and just like other coaches have done in the past, CC sees this as a good time to exit. I hope you do have a good season, because your coach is jumping ship after this season and with the loss of athletic base, a top coach will be hard to find, just look at Ravenwood.

First, Clayton is not my coach and Franklin is not my team. Secondly, you were referring to the past when you stated FHS' success is attributed to FSSD kids and not Grassland. Now you are projecting into the future by stating "after this year" the talent falls off. I won't argue that point. However, If you knew anything about Franklin football the last 5 years, you would have a clue where most of the top players attended middle school.

  17. Do you really think that? FHS has won on the athletes that came through FSSD, not Grassland. With a rezoning from about 6 years back FHS lost the majority of those FSSD kids, but through recruiting and questionable addresses have been able to get a lot of them to still come to Franklin. Thats not happening any more. They are going to Centennial in droves and the lack of athletic ability of Grassland kids will be impossible to ignore in two years, maybe less.

A five minute conversation with anyone who has been around county football for more than 10 years will tell you exactly this information. Heck, thats where I got it. I guess I am the only one that bothers to ask around and figure it out.

Those "un-athletic" Grassland kids who are now seniors at FHS did not lose one game while at Grassland Middle. They went two years beating the athletes from FSSD, Brentwood, and Heritage. Your statement that "FHS has won on the athletes from FSSD" is simply false.

  18. FYI from one shooter to another. The lighting is terrible, espically compared to BGA. The lights cycle RGB so getting clean white is next to impossible. Good luck and grab a fish sandwich, I recommend you add some tarter or somin, little dry. :popcorneater:

Thanks for the heads up on the lights. BGA light isn't great..especially in the end zone. Wish they kicked off at 7 so I would have 30 minutes of good light. Will also take your advice on the fish.

  19. Smyrna has plenty of parking on both sides of the school. Sometimes there is a vendor selling hot fish sandwiches in the parking lot. we have concessions on the home and visitor side of the field. The visitor side seating is kind of small however you are more than welcome to sit on the home side. The fans are very friendly. The atmosphere will be very electric . Smyrna students past and present will be on the field with painted bodies to create a human tunnel for the players to run through and the band will be playing from start to finish. When the game is over the band will play "Happy Trails To you " whether we win or loose....Im sure you will enjoy your visit....

Thanks for the info...sounds like a great place to kick off the season.

  20. Never been to a game at Smyrna...can someone fill me in on what to expect i.e. parking, pre-game tailgating, crowd size, atmosphere, etc.. Should be a great game. Smryna fans may be surprised to see how few players BGA has and the lack of size on the line. However, I would not underestimate them. Most of these guys have been starting since they were Sophomores. If BGA doesn't wear out in the fourth quarter from playing both ways, it should be close. Smyrna looks really fast but not very big. Anyone know what the average size is on the line?
