  1. Should a coach ever throw a game to put the team in a better position? If so, do you just make questionable coaching moves or are the girls in on it also?

For example, the Nashville Tennessean was full of quotes by Smyrna coach Steve Willey virtually accusing Bud Brandon and Wilson Central of purposely losing the regional championship game to avoid a sub-state matchup with 30-2 Hillsboro. It is not the first time that Wilson Central has been suspected of doing this.

Of course you are going to say that because you are from Mount Juliet and your a little upset because ya'll are not going to the GLASS HOUSE!

  2. QUOTE(MJ AND BEYOND @ Feb 3 2007 - 10:27 AM) 826356889[/snapback]

There is no secret between these teams and coaches. The key is execution and guard play...someone on a post a while back made what I think was a great observation regarding the High School girl's game - it is played below the rim.

WC has too many posts and not enough handlers to defeat MJ. Fryer continues to outcoach everybody and will on Tuesday night (only after taking care of business against Lebanon this evening - this team does not look ahead)

I have been advocating the quiet approach all year for this version of the Bears, they are hard nosed, tough and do not bray about their place in the state...they 'just do it'.

I love the papers and WC fans stating HOT and PEAKING...my question is how could WC possibly lose the District Reg season title this year, hmmm?

The Bears were a bit sick and banged up last two games, and still won. As they will tonight, as they will Tuesday night.

    Speed Kills.

    Go Bears!

Speed does kill but I think WC guards will step up to the occasion kind of like what happened last year in the Region 5AAA Semis.... I don't think in the long run when teams hit the tournaments that MJ has the bench depth to keep up with WC. WC has too many weapons to defend. If WC shows up like they are suppose to I predict WC will win Tuesday night by a score of 65-57....

  3. 8AAAlum i disagree with Coach Bond or anyone else on the staff having the right to be upset with rickman because of the article. I mean it would be one thing if he was going for another assistant job at a school within the county, but he isnt. He isnt even applying for a job in boys basketball. In Coaching the goal for everyone is to one day become a head coach. I think that is realized by the majority of coaches and that they should support their assistants in any job they go after even if it is in county.

I don't think at all that they would be upset with him for applying for the head coaching job. I think they would be happy for him to apply for a head job or even an assistant job for that matter.

However, I would guess that some of the statments he made comparing WC and Lebanon were not well received at WC. You just don't do that, but he is from Memphis and he may not know what is and is not acceptable in Wilson Co.

I am not anti-Rickman, but I just don't think he went about this job in the right manner.

  4. "Why has someone else not come out and said they know the task and would like to have the job. What does that say about the job?"

I don't think it says anything about the job. Most of the time when jobs open those applying do not go and speak to the local press about it. I would think that anyone that is applying for the job knows what the current situation is and is willing to take it on. I know all kinds of coaches that have sought head coaching jobs and gotten them without ever having gone public about it during the process. Just ask yourself this question: How many times have I seen someone that is trying to get a high school coaching position go out and elaborate on it in a newspaper? Did Bud Brandon or Chris Fryer do that to get their positions? Did any of the head coaches in Murfreesboro have articles in the Daily News Journal when they were pursuing their current positions? It is just not the normal procedure to openly campaign for a job in the newspaper, but it may work for Coach Rickman. If it does more power to him, but my belief is that it damaged his chances of getting the job.

DM, I agree. I don't think the publicity stunt will work out quiet the way Rickman intended and if it does, then good for him, but I just don't think that was a wise move. In my opinion, it probably hurt him at Central, too. I doubt it was well received by Troy Bond and company, again, my opinion. You just don't parade around and annouce that you are applying for a coaching job anymore than you would any other job. If he were coming in from another school system, it may be a little different, but since he is already working the county, it just isn't the thing to do. There are ways of handling that situation and going public is not one of them. You do have to give him credit for being determined though.

TN Sarcasm...Pokey Chapman was in town last night, too....think she might apply? Thompson has family in Lebanon...he visited, big deal. If he is as successful in MS, KY, Canada, Europe, or where ever he is, why do you think he would be interested in taking a rebuilding position at Lebanon?

  5. Thanks. I didn't read the original post closely enough. I took 'the west end of the county' to be the 'west end of the state'. Now it makes better sense.

Can you shed some light on the 'legend from Mississippi'?

Not sure on the Mississippi mystery man, but I doubt the S.T. person you mentioned earlier would factor, provided it is the same S.T. that I am thinking of. Who knows...

  6. It wasn't a broken wrist, it was a broken bone in her hand. She was in a hard cast for several weeks and then moved on to a soft cast. After each game in the region and sub state, she put the soft cast back on, but she was not allowed to play with it on, thus the taped hand.

She may very well have the soft cast back on again, but no one went against doctor's orders for her to play in the state tournament.

  7. Dr. Petty, WC's team doc, was at all the State Tournament games and I would think that he would have spoken up if he thought there was a problem with her playing.

No doubt Tierny was was needed on the court and a big reason for Wilson Central's winning the gold ball, but I know Bud or her mother would not put winning before her health. Anyone who thinks otherwise, don't know either very well.

Kids play hurt all the time and yes coaches sometimes encourage them to play through the pain, but this was not one of those situations.

  8. Priceless you are really too much. Campbell Brandon is one of the most respected coached in the state. Next time the Oakland boys are playing in Campbell Brandon's gym, take a look around at all the banners that were put their by teams that Campbell coached. He won the state championship in 1971 prior to division of school classifications, which is impressive by any standard. Lebanon was always competitive until he retired in the early '90's. The only coach with more wins is the guy from Bradely Central, whose name has left me for the moment. They are currently looking to hire a head coach now..guess what they are looking for...somone to bring the program back to where it was when Campbell was there.

You also commented that there was hatred among the WC coaching staff and Smyrna and you couldn't be more wrong. Bud, Campbell, and Wiley are all really good freinds and I would imagine they have talked several times today and I would be willing to bet big money that Wiley has a copy of the WC/Hillsboro tape from our game earlier this year and probably a sack full of suggestion from Campbell on how to beat them.

Also, you mentioned the Brandon brothers...they are father and son.

As for the comments that you made about the WC fans, we are a proud bunch as we should be. We have had one of the best starts ever for a new school. Made 2 state tournament apperances in the schools 5 year history, hopefully adding a third tonight. Disrespectful? Probably not intentionally. Do we like to have fun? yes. Isn't that part of the fun of a message board to poke a little fun, make bold comments and outrageous predictions?

I am not familar with the water incident that you referred to involving Lavergne. I have probably missed less than 10 WC games, home and away, since the school has been open. I could do some checking and find out if it is true, and it could be, I just don't remember it...BUT, I will say this Smyrna has some of the rudest students that I have ever encountered. Multiple years in a row, WC security has made students leave, although I don't think they had to this year. At the Region Championship game, their students came over and sat right in front of the Wilson Central parents and administration even though there were signs that indicated where they should sit, when the officer asked them to move, they were argumentative and disrepectful, one student in particluar. I really thought they were going to toss a few of the kids out. Eventually, after repeated requests from the WC crowd and our principal, they were made to move to their side. They were also yelling things that I can't post here at the refs. I am not saying that WC kids are perfect because they aren't, but Smyrna kids certainly wouldn't win an award for behavior either.

Neither student body, however, should reflect on the amount of class the girls programs have. It is not fair to compare them in that manner. Riverdale football has a classy program, but I would imagine you would have something negative to say about their fans as well.

The bottom line is this...Wilson Central girls are District Champs, Smyrna girls are Region Champs and we both have teams to beat tonight before we go any further. Both teams have a lot to be proud of and there is nothing anyone can do or say to change the success of either team.

    Go Lady Wildcats!!!

  9. 2priceless we will take your support. There are too many haters on this board when it comes to Smyrna. When Smyrna wins---the excuses begin about an off night---very seldom has it been said that Smyrna won because they are good. They won region and still get no respect. They have beat Wilson Central 3 out of 4 times and still no respect. Has anyone thought the reason Wilson Central shot poorly was because Smyrna's defense is tough and forced poor shots. Of course if you thought that then you would have to give Smyrna credit which doesn't happen on here.

    Go SMYRNA LADY BULLDOGS!!!!

Would you like some cheese with that?

  10. where was hassells will last night??????

certainly didn't enforce it once smyrna made adjustments for this game

I think she only had one field goal maybe 2 the rest were free throws so i ask again if her enforcing her will ios so easy why not last night ????

You are beating a dead horse here...nope... wait, it could be a rented mule.

The game is over, Smyrna won. All hail Smyrna! Put up a banner, have a parade, celebrate, rent a mule...whatever floats your boat.

Tell your girls to take care of business, if we both get it done, we can talk about this again next week, say Saturday night...and before everyone goes jumping down my throat, I said "if".

  11. Whites Creek will not have to double team Hassell. WC has a good post in Shanice Brown, Region 6 MVP. Whites Creek has played against McGavock's 6'3" Post Ndidi Madu, probably the best post player in the state. Whites Creek has the size to matchup with Wilson Central. Has Wilson Central seen the guards that Whites Creek has? When Wilson Central beat hillsboro it was by 12 points and an off shooting night by Jessica Mooney. I guess that falls under the rented mule rule. We'll see.....................on sat. how good W. Central and Smyrna are.

Sounds like a good plan to me! :thumb:

  12. Exactly where are those MOUTHY WC fans now?

We actually were at the game  Did your mama make you stay home? Let me guess, won't let you drive to Clarksville ;)

Smyrna definately has the toughest draw on Saturday night. I agree with Metroman that is should be a close game.

I haven't seen Whites Creek play this year so I have no idea how they will match up with Central.

Good luck to the Lady Wildcats Saturday night.

  13. Anything new of this job. The AD has posted it on TSSAA. Any front runners for the job or people that have shown interest. The thread was becoming dead, does that mean not too many people really want it, or just don't care that much. The gym had a pretty good crowd for the boys' Tullahoma game. So people do care about Lebanon basketball.

People care about the boys team because they actually compete. If the new coach comes in and works miracles, he/she will have some support too. I feel sorry for the girls because the only support they have is from their parents.

My guess is, the Lebanon adminstation will be looking for someone who has had some successful head coaching experience and maybe has had some luck with turning around a program before. The question would be..does that candidate exist? If they do, I would say hire 'em.

  14. Wow, I have heard people say to stay off the boards because it is the SAME old people posting the SAME old crap just on a different day! Wow is that ever true, so this will be my last post for good. Posting on here doesn't change anything. People have WAY TOO MUCH time on their hands....

Anyway, I do know several people who know Jasmine and she does have an attitude problem at times especially with sportsmanship....so I am not getting my opinions purely on one night of acting conceited. Just trying to let her coach/mom know to coach her through it, so she is not only one of the best basketball players in Tennessee, she is also an outstanding role model, leader, team player, etc.....

Over and out.....for good! Have fun posting a bunch of nonsense every day.

Since BBPRIDE won't be reading this (hehehe), this is for everyone else...Jasmine is one of the nicest, most humble people I have met. It was actually one of the things that struck me about her the first few times we talked. She is like a little girl in a woman's body and she would die if she knew people thought she was being rude on Friday night.

She did go out before her name was called, but the announcer also said, "scoring 55 points in two nights...blah, blah,"and since she was the only person in the gym, probably Middle TN to do that, I would say she was safe in walking on out. Not to mention the excitement of her team winning the District Championship could have made her a little bit eager to join her teammates who were already standing on the court...so give her a break.

    Go Lady Wildcats!!!
