Tennessee Tech Looking for new Head Coach

He was acting in a dual role as head fb coach and AD. I guess the board of trust/President relieved him from his coaching responsibilities. I think he's still the AD at UAB? -

I think that while Watson Brown is probably a good guy, if I were the AD, I wouldn't recycle him. Guys my age know who he is and I'm 47. My choice would be Sanders who has a blank canvas and it was pretty evident he took one for Fulmer by falling on the sword. While Brown would be a feel-good story, in my opinion, it would be the wromg hire. Recruits make and break programs and probably not one 17 or 18 year old kid is gonna even know who Watson Brown is but they will know Randy Sanders name and who he has coached and is now in the NFL. We all know that 1% make it to the NFL but all kids, D-1 or 1-AA, all think they will be playing on Sundays and the 1-AA kids think the D-1's messed up by not offering them a scholarship. Like I have said in previous posts, Sanders is the perfect fit for the sophomore to be QB and can build a program around him. If Sanders is a hot commodity for bigger programs in 2-3 years then the AD has done his job. -
I think you missed the point about the academics. For instance in our county, there may not be certain AP classes available at one high school that any student wants to take. We offer transportation to the school that does offer the course and the student's academic needs are met. The same holds true for certain foreign languages that may only be offered at one of the three high schools, as well as vocational curriculum which is offered in only one high school. Now, if the open zoning is soley being used because little Johnny and his dad want to play for coach bigdog then you have an entirely different set of circumstances. That being said, I guess it would be up to the local board of education to correct any deficiencies in that area. What would be really intriguing would be to have all 95 counties in the state have open zoning based on athletics. After a while, school A would be known for football, school B for girls basketball, school C for baseball and on and on. Is that scenario a good thing? I have no idea.
-
I don't understand why this subject would bring up bad feelings. It seems to me that it is a subject that is germane for all of the 95 counties in the state. Regarding the "alot of talk" statement, again, shouldn't there be legitimate, honest discussion about the "open zoning" that some counties allow? Like I said previously, I had no idea that this practice was either occurring or allowed in the state and am just curious about the genesis of such rules. If it's purely academic it's understandable however, if the motive is pure athletics, my opinion is that is fundamentally wrong on so many levels that it's indefensible.
-
So, the answer to the question is that some county school systems allow open zoning for athletics only? So, in theory, if i lived across the street from school A who has an average football program but I want to go to school B which is 30 minutes away because I want to play for a better football program, that is allowed? Then over time, program A has no shot to ever have more than moderate success in their football program. This seems like a strange system to me and am sincerely surprised that is allowed. Now, if school A does not offer the same academic programs as school B I can see where a parent or student would want to take advantage of the academic courses. However, this system seems like it could be rife with nefarious outcomes by using academic reasons for what is truly an athletic endeavor. I guess maybe I'm naive.
-
Not sure why this is your reaction. I heard it on the radio and was asking the question. If the subject is one you'd rather not discuss for whatever reason, then don't discuss. I don't recall another thread that asked the same question.
-
I think I'd wait until say late January before this thread. Just a suggestion!
-
I heard Murphy Fair the other day on the radio say that a few counties allow "open zoning" for the school in their county. I assume it's for all students who want to take an AP class offered at another school or for another student who wants to focus on certain subjects that may not be offered at their "zoned" school. Obviously, this would also apply to students who want to play at a particular high school in any sport. Our County doesn't allow students to attend any high school they want based on athletics. Does your county do so?

Well, the rumor has it that former UT offensive coordinator and current UK quarterback coach Randy Sanders will be the new coach at TTU. Of course rumors are like flypaper but I think this would be a great hire for the university. -

I think it would be a nice fit. Look at what happened Saturday, after one gaffe on special teams and a turnover, SEMO gets the ball deep in Tech territory and before you know it Tech is down 29-6. Finally, the current staff has to throw the ball which they should have done all year. Sweeney breaks five school records in basically one half. It would be the perfect scenario for this coach to hitch his wagon to Sweeney for several reasons. One, his offense is perfect for his quarterback style, shotgun 80% of the time, throw to set up the run and two, with the coach quarterback combo, this coach could win soon and maybe use Tech as a stepping stone to an SEC head coaching job. By the way, can someone tell me why the Tech games are televised live locally in Cookeville? It seems that by doing so, you give the locals an excuse to stay at home and/or leave at half if it's the least bit cold or rainy? This really seems self-defeating and dumb. -

Just speculation and rumor but the new coach at Tech may, at one time, have worn orange. -
Personally, I think the right coach from the High School ranks could pull this off. What do you think?
-
I find it funny that over the years the losing coaches do not count the Hall of Fame games in the loss column while the winning coaches do. Shouldn't there be a standard for all schools to follow, ie, either count them or don't?

Robert Hill's return for Mt. Juliet against Hillsboro was actually 102 yards. I keep the stats and had it at 102 that night and the coaches film confirmed the distance. The Tennessean carried it at 98 yards. In any case, it was a great play as he jumped the slant in the end zone and out ran a very speedy Hillsboro player who had the angle.

what do these numbers tell you?

OK folks, here's the deal. Now read this very closely..We haven't opened a new refinery in this country since the year i graduated college, 1982. You can pump all the oil you want for gasoline but if you can't refine it, well, there's no gas. The refineries we have are operating at 110% of stated capacity. There is a refinery scheduled to open in 2008 but, get this, it has taken close to fifteen years to get all of the necessary environmental approvals. What were you doing fifteen years ago? Combine the lack of refineries and the demand from China and you get what we've got. Now some of you would say the refinery dilemma is made up by the oil companies but which company or individual is willing to spend the working capital, (cash), necessary for fifteen years before any hope of return on investment is possible? Not me. Someone had a great idea about new refineries in this country but it was dismissed out of pocket, ie, use the old, government owned army and air force bases that are no longer in service for refinery locations and streamline the approval process. No, I'm not Republican or a Democrat..Republicrat maybe. -
Actually, without rush hour traffic it's only about a 20 minute ride. Plenty of time to get home and hopefully celebrate.

Tullahoma, How's the basketball teams lookin'?
-
Wah Wah Wah...I think I'll call the Wambulance.

I've said this before on other posts regarding Springfield. There is enough talent that they will go as far as they want in the playoffs. It's up to them how far they want to go. They are well coached, seemingly disciplined and have very impressive football players. I just hope we play ya'll at your place a week from this Friday.

First of all, while you are in your room and obviously have access to a computer, pull up a map for the State of Tennessee. You will note that the Commandos are, in fact, a Sumner county team located in Hendersonville. Thus, you have the name Hendersonville Commandos. Now, if you are referring to the Commanders, that team is in Wilson County. They are the Friendship Christian School Commanders. As for not supporting the Mt. Juliet squad..good and thank you for your non-support. Hey, how's the basketball teams looking?

Ok, so you didn't like the cheese and whine. How about this, "When ifs and buts become honey and nuts, we'll all be fat and sassy." C'mon, you gotta love that one, my grandma used to say it. Because if that mean old ref hadn't thrown that flag or other guy would've seen what the other one thought he saw but, and if.... Hey, if you had scored two more touchdowns that were called back just think how great that would have been!! Hey, if we hadn't run for 327 yards you would have won, how wondeful for you.
-
Would you like some cheese with that whine! Oh, the cost was $150 to the umpire and $25 to the ref. The cheapest all year for a ref, what a deal.
