  1. It is only for one year while they get the roof fixed...if i'm not mistaken it isn't for good!

The high school students are moving into the elementary school across town, until they fix the roof or build a new school. It is not suppose to affect the football team this year (Worst case play every game on the road). If they elect to build a new school Monterey's home games may have to be played at either Cookeville High School or Upperman High School in 2013 and 2014. It will be a hassle but if we get a new school it will be worth it.

  2. I don't understand how you can combine two districts to form a so called " mega region" and keep the rules to get into the playoffs as if there are no regions. If they combine two districts there should be 4 automatics in that region. The only thing that would change is the number of wildcards allowed in. It is simply not fair to the teams placed in a region.

  3. What happened in this game?

    Details please.

    Croz,

RBS played really hard, and had every chance to win this game. Monterey is just a beat up football team. Injuries have really taken their toll on this team. They lost their QB,WB,TE,LT and their TB is at about 65 to 70%. The bad part is the QB is the starting safety, the WB is the starting outside LB, The TE is the other starting outside LB their TB is a starting safety and they are not playing him on defense so maybe he can make it on offense. Monterey at full strength is a decent team, but are very young when any of the starting 11 goes out.

  4. Anyone attend? Score? Details please?

Very good scrimmage, not sure of the score. I think Monterey took it by 1 td, but I could be mistaken. Monterey was the more impressive team. They threw the ball well and had some really nice runs. Their sophomore QB played really good. Harriman finished the scrimmage better than Monterey did. After the JV kids came in and went out Harriman won the next few series, but over all Monterey took it to them. Monterey's young kids looked very impressive during their offensive and defensive series on the field. Number 45 is going to be beast!

  5. I think the boys on the mountain will fair pretty well (monterey) they usually meet up with friendship in the region championship and have made it to sub state the past three years. They put out LV last year in the sub state and the pitcher that came and closed that game to win is still there. Monterey might not be as strong as they were last year but you can never count them out they play with a whole lot of heart.

  6. I haven't heard to much chatter about bowl games this year. It looks like there is going to be several 5 win teams that will miss out on the playoffs. If it turns out that way when will the bowl games start being announced.

  7. All three guys that pick games for the Herald-Citizen chose Monterey to win.

    They don't have a clue.

    Croz,

I'm not sure you have a clue. You have been dogging Monterey pretty hard, but in all reality Monterey did not play that bad against you guys. You scored on a bubble screen and set up another score on a double handoff pass when one of Monterey's kids got flagged for pass interference. Now I will give you that in the last part of the third quarter your team took control. Every time Monterey would march the ball down the field on the tigers a yellow hankie came out and that is a fact. The opening drive of the second half Monterey drove the ball down to the 1 ft line and your team bowed their backs and made a good stand. No one from Monterey has said anything negative about your team at all, just don't understand all the GHS smack talk after the game has been played. Jackson Co. is a much improved team, but I'm not ready to say they are better than Monterey I would recommend you worry about your team a little more because from where I stand you guys are not the Tigers of old.

  8. You guys are making something out of nothing, Coach Heady has praised Clay County's coaches for the job they did Friday night. He gave them their kudos for their offensive scheme in the second half on Friday. He told me he thought the Garrett kid is one of the best if not the best player in the region. Sometimes the paper doesn't always print everything that was said as well. I would suggest that before you judge Coach Heady or any coach for that matter that you try having a microphone stuck in your face after an extremely tough loss and come up with exactly the right things to say.

  9. I think the top ten teams would have to be

    1 friendship christain

    2Jackson christain

    3Monterey Highschool

    4Lookout valley

    5Huntington

    6Sweet water

    7Harriman

I can't think of any more, if you can let me know thank you and god bless

  10. Clarkrange won the first round against JC but they weren't nearly as dominant as most had said they would be. I do not see them beating JC in Gainesboro and it should be a great game when they meet in the Region finals and ultimately the state championship. Molly Heady was by far and away the best player on Clarkrange's team. She is the reason they were finally able to beat JC. If she gets into foul trouble against JC then Clarkrange will once again lose to their arch rival. None of the other players were able to do much against JC and the big girl from C'range just looked so out of place. I noticed the C'range girls and fans cheered like they had won the state championship when the game was over and rightfully so. After getting beat by a team 10 times in a row (exaggeration but it seems like it!) its good to get a victory even it was by the slightest margins on your home floor. C'range has yet to play a game away from home so i will hold out my opinion on them until i see them in Gainesboro.

Midten, Molly is a great player, but don't forget about the 16 points that Kelly Reed dropped on Jackson Co. She also had a huge 5 second call on defense and hit a big three that changed momentum. Tasha Phillips got into foul trouble pretty early in the game. That took her out of the game. Tori Lowe and Hannah Green do so many things that never show up in the box score. I just think Molly would be the first to tell you it is a team thing at Clarkrange. They are all good because of each other.

  11. oh, and last I checked, talking smack to the crowd is NOT part of the game. I know that my HS coach never would have allowed that to happen. That's a difference between good coaching and not so good coaching.

Well your coach allowed it because one of your players was agging our crowd on as well. Also I will say it again getting on here and making fun of a 15 year old kid takes a big man. Oh wait a minute your 6'4". Your a freaking joke!

  12. btw, I would like to add that there were A LOT of personal fouls in this game on both teams. Some were warranted, others I am not so sure about. But I will say number 3 and number 6 from Monterey talk a lot of smack and as hard and dirty as this game was, I was really shocked to see number 3 throw a punch after Malone intercepted the ball to seal the game. And as for number 6, he should really grow up a few inches, I mean he was only like 4'8" maybe before he talks smack. Both players were over at the Gordonsville sideline talking smack to the fans and what not, not saying the Gordonsville faithful was acting very sportsmanlike either, but both players just need to keep their mouth shut and go back to their perspective huddles after the play is over.

Slow down their Bishop. The personal foul count was 3 on Gordonsville and 1 on Monterey. Also if you are a grown man making fun of a kid for how tall he is pretty classless in itself. This was a good hard fought game, and sometimes emotions run high. Their was one of your player doing the same thing 6 did to the Monterey crowd. It is all part of the game. Now if number 3 threw a punch that is different and he is lucky not to be thrown out.

  13. To address the whole transfer because of a bad situation debate:

While I will acknowledge that in some cases, transfering might absolutely be a last resort decision that needs to be made in terms of removing a player from a detrimental situation, I am in no way gullible enough to believe (and neither are most of the posters on this board) that most transfers take place because of "bad situations." My question is: What exactly makes the situation bad? Is it that Susie did not get the number of minutes or shots that she thought she deserved? Or is it that the coach made her run extra laps in practice because he did not like her attitude or work ethic? Or was it that she felt she was too good to play with all of the mediocre talent around her? Or it could have been that she and her parents felt like they knew more about what was best for the team than the coach did? Or was it that the coach did not put all the emphasis on her and her needs? Or maybe it was because the coach did not consult with her and her parents on every single coaching decision that was made? My point is that anyone can call a situation "bad" for any number of selfish and unfounded reasons, but that situation may only be "bad" becuase they are not getting what they want.

I think just about anyone who transfers will say they transfered because they were in a "bad situation." Even the young lady that AuntKim referred to who has transfered numerous times probably felt that she was in a "bad situation" at every school she attended, when in actuality, it was because she was not the "star" of the team and getting the number of minutes she thought she deserved. The "bad situation" excuse has been used numerous times on these boards for players who have transfered in all classifications. However, in one particular instance of a player that has transfered at some point over the past few years (it could be recent or not, but I'm trying to stick with the theme of anonymity), it was quoted that she was needing to leave a "bad situation." However, I, myslef, have heard the father of that particular player say in front of the parents of other players on her AAU team that the reason she was transfering was because he (and the daughther as well) wanted her to win a State Championship. Nothing was mentioned about her being in a "bad situation," just that she wanted to win a State Championship, so they moved to a school that has/had a great shot at winning one.

I do believe that in some instances that transfers move because of actual, legitimate "bad situations," but mostly I feel that it is just a ploy that is used to hide the the real reason they are transfering, which is to win, win, win.

In some of the recent transfers I don't think the parents think their child is the next coming of Jesus Christ. They simply want their child to reach her full potential, but you are entitled to your opinion. Some parents would like to not only see their child get a college scholarship, but they would hope that they have been coached well enough to have a chance to play in college. I would just say be careful to judge without having first hand knowledge of the situations.

  14. I understand the point of view that has been stated so far in this thread, but not every situation is the same. You can't group all transfers into one category and say it shouldn't happen. The players that just keep on transferring from school to school to school may have some problems, but not every kid or family is doing that. Lets face it folks some situations are just not good, and when it is not a good situation do you just tough it out or do you get out if you can? Everyone is going to have their opinion about the right or wrong answer to this question, but ultimately that is a question most people will face at some time in their life. I will say this most everyone if they will admit it will get out of a bad situation if they can. I guess my opinion is that until you walk in these families shoes you shouldn't judge them or group them into one category.

  15. Yes, she could have continued to coach. It was her choice not to. She knew that Adkins would leave if she didn't return. I don't know if she was bluffing in order to keep her position at MHS, but it didn't work. What is disheartening about these kids leaving is that their parents are alumni and former athletes at MHS (including coach Stevens and Heady). Monterey is a very small community, it hurts those that love the school. There is no loyalty anymore, it is all about "the ME" syndrome.

    Old Coach,

You shouldn't speak on behalf of these individuals. Stevens was forced to leave. She did not choose to. She may have had a choice to stay on as a coach, but I don't blame her a bit for choosing not to. It does not work when the head coach of a sport teaches somewhere else. The Heady's decided to move their child because of the commitment level to the program from the coaches, administration, and players. The coaches missed or were late to several practices. 2/3 months had passed since the last ball game and still no conditioning was taking place,(Coach Heady starts his offseason training 3 weeks after the last ball game and does not stop until the next 3 week dead period so he knows what it takes) and when it did the girls were being left alone in the weight room, and the coaches did not show up or were late. When the head coach was pressed about this his excuse was I teach in Cookeville even though he took the job knowing he worked in Cookeville. Administration was made aware of this, but nothing was done. The players are great girls, but basketball is just a past time for them. Not a single player outside of Molly and an upcoming freshman were playing summer ball. So before you question the loyalty of Coach Heady make sure you have your facts straight. He waited 2 years to see if anything was going to get better and it didn't. He felt he had to be loyal to his daughter first, and he is willing to accept whatever follows.

  16. I agree Ty. I think if the school is not good enough for his daughter, it should not be good enough for him. How do the kids at the school feel about this?

You guys need to give it a rest! You don't know anything about this situation or Coach Heady. Trust me he had his reasons for moving his daughter. He has not said much about the situation because he is a class act. He is trying his best to keep the dirt off of coach t and out of the papers. Trust me if he told his side of the story you would look at things differently. He is very loyal to his school, and his players. However, he is more loyal to his daughter. If you can't understand that then you must not be a parent.

  17. I think you will have a good year, who is your spring game with?

Monterey's success will depend on how well some younger kids play. The loss of Phillips at FB and Cantrell at QB will be tough. The kids taking those spots have the potential to be better, but potential doesn't matter when that whistle blows. A senior line should help the transition period. I think Monterey will compete for a playoff spot, but in region 4A nothing is a given.

  18. Congrats to all the girls that made this team.

It appears that team success not individual success is the most important factor in deciding this team. That is the only way someone could justify Molly Heady from Monterey not making the Single A list. 18 pts per game and 12 rebounds per game should get you on this list.

  19. You are so right Scuba. I have heard the "she plays A ball" thing myself several times and people on Coacht have got all over me for even suggesting that a major team like the lady vols could even consider a class A player. We have great players in Class A just like the other Classes. However, when watching a higher classification game, it is obvious that the quality of play is better overall than at the class A level.

I guess I get a little ill when individuals 1)talk down kids. (If they have nothing good to say about a particular kid, then talk about one you can say something positive about. 2)When individuals get so full of themselves or their team's success that they start believing that no one can compete with a certain kid or group of kids. There are a ton of girls in Tennessee that play ball year round and that are great players. This includes the kids listed above from JC and CR. They are great players and their skills show their dedication to the game and they should be bragged on.

I would recommend anyone wanting to talk about how much better their kids are than any others to start their own thread and entitle it something like "District 7 rules and all others stink" or "the players at JC and CR are the only one's that count".

Ladies at ClarkRange and Jackson County, please do not take this as I am cutting you down. I have stated many times that you have proven your greatness on the court and your dedication and hard work shows in the results. Not many districts can claim to have had their top 2 teams meet in the finals at state. I do not know if it has ever happened and it might just happen again next year. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

It is just that some of your fans are full of themselves. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

I think anytime you have more athletes to choose from your level of play will go up, but I also believe that there are girls in A ball that would be stars on any team in the state. They are fewer and farther between, but they are there. That is why I think AAU is so important for these girls, because it levels the field so to speak. I'm a big fan of all teams in 7A, but I'm a bigger fan of hard work and a good attitude. I know that their are young men and women all over this state that lay it on the line, and those are the players I'm a fan of. The players that I mentioned are the players I get to see and they are the ones who make me go WOW. I talked to Molly and asked her what she thought about the state tournament and she was very impressed with several players in the tournament. She mentioned how good the girl from Milan was. I think she was a Miss Basketball finalist. My point is most of the people talking all this 7A dominence stuff are fans, and that is what fans do, but the athletes that are laying it on the line don't have time for that. These girls also enjoy being around other players that are really good. Have you ever noticed at the end of the game how the stud players will hug out of respect for one another. I have witnessed that and thought you know that is great battle your butt off and then show a great respect for each other.

  20. In reference to the talent level at A, AA, and AAA:

Most of the girls that were mentioned are used to playing AAU and play against the best talent in our Nation (if they play D1 AAU).

And Jackson County and Clarkrange coaches are known for playing AA and AAA schools in their regular season schedules. They usually pull wins out of those matchups, so I don't really understand what you are talking about with the talent level in these divisions.

Another example, JC girls scrimmaged Wilson Central pre-season and won! So, this theory that you seem to be presenting is not always the case, especially in today's times where so many girls are working in the off season to get better at their game.

Bud, I know that Molly, Laken, and Tasha all play D1 AAU. Molly and Laken played for the same organization last year. Laken is a year older than Molly so they were not on the same team, but I know they played last year. Molly started for her AAU team and she averaged around 12 to 15 points per game against the best competition in the country at her age. Her team played several Adidas and Nike showcase tournaments across the country. In every showcase tournament her 14 and under team played up in age. The girls in 1A ball almost have to play AAU to prove they can play against the best competition. They have to overcome the "she plays A ball" mentality.

  21. LEONARD WILL BE THE GO TO GIRL NEXT YEAR AND WATCH HER NUMBERS ESCULATE IN POINTS, STEALS AND REBOUNDS AND JC WILL BE COMPETIVE EVEN WITH LOSING ALL THOSE SENIORS, SO DON'T COUNT LEONARD OUT AND THE LADY BUFFALOES HAVE TWO OR THREE GIRLS THAT WILL BE IN THE HUNT ALSO FOR THAT HONOR

I think it is pretty cool that we have these elite players in our District. Molly, Laken, Tasha, and Kelly are all super players. Each one of them are deserving of anything they get. I read a pretty neat quote from Coach Brown when he said he told Laken to shoot that free throw like she was shooting with her Mom. The neat thing was she was shooting after practice with her Mom. I know that Molly spends a lot of time after practice in the gym with her dad because I have seen them in their shooting. I'm sure Tasha and Kelly do the same things. I also think these girls root for one another. I would like to see all of them on one team because their would be a WOW factor. You get back what you put in and it is obvious these girls put a lot in.

  22. Molly Heady has got to start getting some credit for the work she does in the toughest single a district in the state. She has led this district in scoring and rebounding for two years in a row. I believe if her team could go a little bit farther in tournament play she would get more recognition. She is also an outstanding student. She has a 4.0.
