  1. The fact that the racism charge is often made gratuitously doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Unless your snide commendation of diversity in two top prep schools was aimed at the presence of white players, I'm pretty comfortable with calling you a racist.

You fail to recognize the situation the independent schools face here. In the late '70's the federal government began to hint at a revocation of the provision that allowed cash gifts to us to be tax deductible, based on the fact that we excluded black students. Such a move would be devastating to our endowment funds, which provide a great deal of the money used to run the schools: tuition alone doesn't cut it. No matter how good the school is, it can't function without cash. Ask the people at Wallace, Duncan, or Castle Heights, among others. Trick question, you can't. they all closed. They ran out of money.

So we made great efforts to integrate our student bodies. And in return, we attract remarks like yours, suggesting that the presence of black student athletes in our schools is somehow indicative of wrongdoing on some level. Pray tell, what can we do in this situation to be "right?" Allow black students, but only with the proviso that they cannot participate in athletic activities?

Lastly, I don't think I'm particularly sensitive, and I certainly don't support any of the liberal persons or causes you ascribe to me. I'm a retired cop, hardly a field for the sensitive and easily shocked. In my day, I was regarded as a good interrogator. One of the first principles of interrogation is that upon accusation, innocent people deny the charge, while the guilty obfuscate. If not in my first post, certainly in my second, I accused you of racism. Note that your response begins with an attack on me, and moves on to discuss your Nordic heritage. You never deny the accusation. You'll throw it in now, of course, since you've been reminded of what non-racists would do in your position.

I have a number of friends in Sweden and have travelled there and Denmark extensively. They've taken in a massive number of refugees, from Somalia and Yemen, the former Yugoslavia, and the Middle East. It's become an extremely diverse culture. Racist acts and statemenst are not only frowned upon, they're punishable. You may claim them as ancestors, but I suspect they're not very likely to claim you.

Wow, I am eternally in your debt for the sociology, geography, interrogation, etc. lessons. However, as to diversity in Nordic countries, their diversity is right up there with Bledsoe county. I'm sure we all ought to aspire to live in countries where racist statements are punishable. You would certainly have my vote for arbiter of what is a racist statement. Heck, you already fancy yourself with the ability to ferret out racist thought.

As for being a racist, I attended the first school (private) to integrate in 1966 in one of Tennessee's larger cities and observed the team bus turned away from a restaurant when it refused to serve our black players. That’s hardly personally experiencing racism but that is racism, not pointing out that a number of our top private schools add students in the 9th grade, many of whom posses above average athletic skills. If you want to attribute racism to the comment, be my guest.

  2. First off, Congratulations to Signal Mountain. Ya'll were the best team in 2A this year. Good luck in 4A next year... I noticed Greeneville had about 80 players dressed out compared to TCA's 30 (of which some are 8th graders that the coaches allow to dress out after the middle school season is over). You really had a good team... you have succes and it came quick enjoy that because it doesnt happen often. You beat some good teams to get that gold ball and deserve it. Your coaches made some great adjustments in the game... i.e. exploiting the size of TCA and running it right at them and then man pressing our receivers so they would have to so work so hard to run their routes which became another reason they became so tired. TCA doesnt have the luxury of sending other people in when one person is tired. Many times throughout the season the coaches had to take a timeout just to let people rest. People are saying that it shouldnt matter if people go both way, which might be true for one or two, not for 10 guys that go both way and have no way to get a break. Also, going both ways on the line is much different.

As for #17, his name is Joseph Coley. I was sitting with his family when he got hit. Yes, it was a frightening thing and think about his parents as you see your boy motionless on the field. Thanks for the prayers, I know the family appreciates that. He had a mild concussion. They had to hide the boys helmet because he wanted to go back in so bad. Something that most of you did not see was after they hid his helmet from him, he picked up the water and made sure every player on the field had water anytime they could get it... now talk about a kid willing to do anything for his team!!! We lost on the scoreboard but its things like this that make them winners in my heart.

As for Jabriel, I dont understand how you can have a great team and a great win and then get on here and bash a 17 year old kid. Listen the kid was playing with a bum ankle and a bum shoulder(which he has been waiting on the season to end to have surgery on). Both of these injuries would keep a lot of kids out. The kid plays every snap... do you think you would get tired?? As far his quickness and speed... take a look at the first Signal pass play... he tracked the guy down and then if you still dont believe watch TCAs second play from scrimmage where he ran it in for their first touchdown, he made a couple of moves to get in the endzone that normal players would have had about a 3-4 yard gain. As far as being burned, one of those for sure he was trying to chase down from the backside. As far as him not being the enforcer, hes a free safety, that is not his job, although he did have several tackles in the running game. I just dont understand why is there so much hate on a 17 year old kid... Oh I know why, he signed a major college scholarship and you didnt. The first thing any college would do for this kid (and I say any college because anybody that is somebody offered him a ride to school) is put weight on him. Please dont get on here and take away from this kid when you know nothing about him.

TCA... congratulations on a great season. You have taken us where we have never been. You represented all the players that wore the jersey before you and your school well. Every team you played this year had more players and students than you did, but you did not let that stop you. Every team was "bigger, stronger, and faster", but you didnt let that stop you in the playoffs. I wish I could change the outcome for you and have you hold the gold ball because of your heart and determination. There is something special about you guys and this team. You have absolutely no reason to hang your heads, you made the TCA family proud.

TCA coaches... you also did an outstanding job. You got more out of these guys than ever expected. They rallied around you!! Losing 2 of the first 3 games against your biggest rivals always make you question yourself, but you guys found a way to get those kids to play with more than they have. I dont care what anyone says I appreciate you guys!!

Again, congratulations to both teams. Signal Mountain you had a great team, I think I would have had a lot of fun watching you if you werent playing us. TCA be proud, you made it farther than you should have and now have a lot to hang your hat on.

Good post. TCA's story is inspirational. Whether Washington ever plays a down at Alabama, I'm sure he'll represent Trinity well. His performance Saturday was inspiring.

  3. My point is that there is an unfair assumption that any black athlete at a private school is there illegitimately, as if no black family could independently see the value of a prep school education or provide it to their children, children who could never qualify for the school academically. The original post was racist, but couched in a way that wasn't so overt or openly offensive. I simply did him a favor and removed the weasel words.

I didn't realize you are a member of the dreaded Race Police. Were you deputized by Al Sharpton or The Reverend Jessie Jackson? Whoever your sponsor is, it is impressive you can deliver the dreaded R accusation by merely reading a post about a high school football game and then assign racist tendencies. There is a position for you at the ACLU.

Personally, as a descendent of Nordic ancestors, I am greatly offended that a person of your demonstrated sensitivity would so callously assume that Vikings would have anything to do with burning down Ensworth although I'm sure there would be a lot of loot available: You know, iPads, North Face fleeces, Michael Kors watches and accessories, etc.

  4. Great game. I really want to commend both schools for their exemplary dedication to diversity in athletics. Few schools in our state can afford to assemble such an impressive number of students who, both large and small, can run the 40 in D1 completive times. It is truly an impressive and enviable accomplishment.

  5. Didn't something like this happen a couple of years ago... with maybe a team out of East Tennessee? Was thinking it was Notre Dame or someone like that... what was the punishment then?

Didn't I read where the schools were only suspending those involved for 3 games? If they would have stepped forward and said all involved are off the team for good, the TSSAA may have been a little easier on them... but that's my opinion.

Notre Dame and Knox Catholic (just a little irony here) were in involved in a big fight that migrated to the stands. Both were punished and I believe fined but it has been a long time ago (before Coacht).

  6. Hahaha absolutely not, but anyway we got off topic here because countrypk wants to fill ironman's shoes and make himself look like an idiot. If you look at what countrypk has posted on this topic it has been nothing constructive or informative, it has been him just picking fights. Look I don't know, nor do I care who your people are, but perhaps you should actually post something worth talking about instead of just trying to start arguments.

Kind of touchy, aren't we? I was originally responding to a post about some stupid little bird which supposedly chirped something about moving the traditionals to the boro. You commented about people from Chattanooga who would whine and gripe about a hypothetical move. My comment which offended your tender sensibilities was pointing out that a number of "your people" do an inordinate amount of whining and griping as you have just demonstrated regarding my posts. Thank you for making my point! Incredibly, Kevin Lenahan was able to rise from his humble high school education and I don't believe I ever heard the Leprachan whine and gripe.

As far as the original topic, I'm thrilled with the move and a thank you to Clarksville for doing a great job hosting the event and setting the standard; kind of like Chattanooga did with the Spring Fling.

  7. Hmm I'm sure that's not your team since they are the only ones you've posted about since you started commenting late in the season. However, I'd be happy being known as almost anything, as long as I wasn't an arrogant fan like yourself. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

If you put a /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> after accusing someone of being arrogant, does that make it OK?

  8. "maybe the Memphis side of the state can help but we heard that he got a concussion in the match he loss and wrestled the rest of the tournament with it. Nick did not look 100% the rest of the tournament but he stunk it up. Tough kid!"

This is too funny. When you try to replace stunk with the correct word, it replaces it with the word stunk.

  9. I don't know Countrypk, those Baylor fans sure know a thing or two about griping too, heck wasn't it just a few years ago when TJ Duncan "buried" Baylor along with his headgear causing a tide of your people to visit their one hundred dollar paid by the hour therapists?

Baylor's not my people but you're right about whining. griping and crying except for the MAN, Jordan Leen!

  10. Great post and logic, but again there will still be those people from the Chattanooga area that will still gripe and whine if the individual tourney is moved to Williamson County.

You're be an expert on that topic. You'd have to go to a VOLS football board to find folks who know more about the subject of griping and whining than FR fans!

  11. I ENJOYED WATCHING THE SEMIFINALS ON ESPN-2 LAST NIGHT. AWESOME COVERAGE WITH THE SPLIT SCREEN. IT WAS GREAT. EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEND ESPN AND ENTERPRIZE RENT A CAR A LETTER TELLING THEM HOW MUCH YOU ENJOYED IT AND THE PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. I AM SURE THEY WILL GET ALOT OF LETTERS SAYING "WHY SHOW A DUMB SPORT LIKE WRESTLING WHEN YOU COULD BE SHOWING BASKETBALL".

    THE ANIMAL

this was great. I watched the matches on a big screen and used PIP to minimize the basketball game I was watching at the same time; two wrestling matches and basketball game at the same time! My wife hated it! I did turn off the basketball game when Leen wrestled.

  12. A huge congrats goes out to Joe Blair. He is the master mind that got this accomplished with very little help from the other three (Franklin, Indy, Ravenwood, that I know of....). Coach Blair put in a lot of hard work and spent a majority of his free time to get this nailed down in a short time period. I can't say thank you enough to Joe Blair and I know we are looking forward to hosting the tournament with Brentwood, Franklin and Ravenwood. It is going to be tough to keep the tournament up to the same standards that the Clarksville community has got it to, but we are definitely up to the challenge.

P.S. I heard from a little birdie that here in the very near future both tournaments will be at the Ag Center!!!!

Your little birdie does't know stink from shinola.

  13. Who was the heaviest kid that ever wrestled in the state of TN, and did so successfully?

Let's see, biggest kid. That would be Chris Taylor (6'5",412 lbs) against Alexander Medved at Maclellan Gym in 1970. Medved won but Taylor won the bronze in Munich.

  14. The Walker Valley Duals have been cancelled. I have been informed by the Chattanooga Officals Assosciation that due to the high number of tournaments on the weekend we had scheduled the Walker Valley Duals that they would not be able to support another tournament. So at this time we will investigate another possible date for the tournament. Apologies to those who already committed to attend our tournament.

Too bad. I'd dust off my whistle but at my age I'm not as patient with fan and coach abuse.
