1. Mexico def. showed that they were the better team, but the US showed some flashes of what could be a great team. lets hope we pull it together without beasley wednesday in birmingham.

Oh come on! The last 8 matches were 6-1-1 USA. What the ________ proved was they were the better team at 7200 feet in front of 100,000 screaming, garbage throwing, insult shouting, grape pickers. The good news was that our team got a free trip back to US after the game and the winners had to stay in Mexico.

  2. The US' record at Azteca stadium is 0-17-1. Doesn't look good. The Mexican crowd is horrible. The last time the US played in Mexico they started chanting "Osama ben Ladin". Its got to be hard playing in front of over 106000 spics at 7200 feet above sea level. If the US won, dozens would be killed in riots in the stadium. They would have to call the National Gaurd.

  3. Have you ever been to South Pittsburg or virtually any other town or city in the state that boasts a state championship team in any sport?  In most every case, there is a sign that says something like, "South Pittsburg -- Home of the Pirates, State Football Champions 1969, 1999, etc."

    Is that not advertising?

BTW, who pays for those signs?  Is it tax-payer produced?

This is how it works in the alternative universe of private/public debate.

When Red Bank won the state (Riggs' junior year) there was a big billboard with a picture of Red Bank's team on it as you entered Red Bank.

    That was town pride.

When McCallie won the state a couple of years later, there was a bill board across from campus with our team's picture on it.

    That was advertising.

Or as the TSSAA's executive committee regularly tells its private school members, "Heads we win, tales you lose".

  4. My father told me that families throughout the southeast moved to Chattanooga during the 50's and 60's so their sons could play for the legendary Red Etter at Chattanooga Central. When Coach Etter moved to Baylor all three of the Hannah brothers came from Albertville so they could play for him.

Nothing new with moving so your kids can play for the best.

  5. This does go in cycles.  Did you realize that there were no state championships in boys basketball from Memphis from 1938 (Whitehaven if they were considered a Memphis school back then) until 1974 when Melrose won the Large school classification?  Memphis and West Tennessee have definitely done well for the last decade or more.

Your observation has more to do with institutionalized segregation than the quality of basketball in Memphis from 1938 until 1974.

  6. And how does naming names on these boards hold them accountable? Just what does that accomplish?

It accomplishes identifying the poster as an immature, whining, ignorant and probably mediocre soccer player or parent of one. There's a definite correlation between the two.

  7. The great news is that with the growth in popularity of soccer, there will be many more potential refs who not only know the rules but have played the sport for years and have that perspective in addition to knowledge of the rules.

I'm concerned that one of these days we're going to lose an out of shape ref to a heart attack. I know CPR, but man, would it slow down a game!

  8. Why not name the bad refs?  I think there are some very good refs, but those that aren't doing well need to be identified.  Maybe that will make them get their act together.  Or maybe it will let them re-think WHY they are a ref to start with.  I seriously doubt they are there for the money, so I'm going to assume it's for the love of the game... but, like anything else, time can make them get a little lazy or burnt out.  IF they're not there for the right reason, then maybe they should re-think what they are doing...so, naming a bad ref isn't necessarily a negative thing.

I have to ask, did you ever play soccer? As I said, I've played in hundreds of games, reffed at least 100 rec games and seen hundreds more. I sit in the stands or play on the field and listen to parents who don't have a clue regarding rules bellowing from the stands and have never played the game. All they know is that someone took the ball away from their Johnny and there must have been a foul because Johnny is such a good player. I'll always remember the fan sitting in the stands aleast 100 yards away ball screaming at the top of his lungs that the referree who was 10 feet away from the foul had it wrong.

  9. To say that refs do not show up at games with their minds already set against or for a certain team is not true either.

I hope you're saying this is the exception and not the rule. Any ref who consistently exhibited this type of behavior wouldn't be reffing long.

  10. After playing several hundred games and watching at least that many, bad calls and bad refereeing even out. You need to be concerned about the 11 guys you're playing against, not the guy in the striped shirt. I have yet to see a ref kick a ball during a game, score or make a save. Getting on these boards whining about refs says more about you than about the refs.

I reffed a couple of summers when I was younger and I am looking forward to doing it after college. I think it actually helps my playing. A large part of the problem is that many of the refs in recreation, high school and even select never played soccer. Many of the guys are overweight and immobile. Whatever the quality of ref, I think the vast majority of these guys only want to do a good job and rarely are biased against a team. However, if you or your coach start getting in their faces, it's only human nature to react.

  11. wow, you are aware that a) justin givens never scored against mccallie, and b)with no seniors on this team, not one player for Ooltewah has ever played with justin givens ... Why do you have to hate on Ooltewah, they played the hand they were dealt in this game, same as your Tornado. However, seeing as how "ifs and buts...". IF the field had been dry maybe the poor clearance that Patrick Johnson scored off of would have gotten further, so he wouldnt have scored. And also IF the field were dry, maybe the Owls counter attack would have worked once. I do NOT actually believe this, just pointing out how rediculous, rude and pointless your speculation was

    825622712

Two points: 1)Justin was the best player to ever suit up for the Owls and often could be counted on to keep the Owls in a game no matter how lousy his support was 2) On a dry field I think McCallie would have scored more.

Both points are opinions and and opinions are like noses.

  12. the score maybe

    825622221

Darn, I got caught up in the atmosphere. On a dry field, this could have become ugly - 3 or 4 to zip. The field evened the game up somewhat and kept the puckish Owls in the game. As they boarded the bus to go back to the nest, one of the Owls was heard to say, "I bet if it had been dry, we'd have lost 3 or 4 to nothing. Lucky us. I wish Justin Givens still played for us". Or something like that.
