  1. Unicoi County and the double horseshoes have been playing a high level of baseball and softball for a very long time. The first time I saw the baseball team play was at a state tourney in the mid 90s. That same year the 13-15 yr old state softball tourney was in Erwin, Tn. I coached the Madison team in that tourney and our experience there was very positive. The newspaper covered the tourney and the officials running the tourney and umpires were great people. I ran into some Unicoi people in 2002 at the Eastman Kodak tourney when I assisted at Goodpasture. I was suprized that they remembered me by name and how welcoming they were. The Lady Devils followed the course for success over the years with strong development leagues, dedicated adult leadership and good work ethic. This year it paid off. Congratulations on your state title. I was with the Goodpasture assistant coach on Saturday afternoon and his comments were that the Unicoi team won with class and acted like they had been there before. Good luck in the future and keep working hard at this game.

  2. QUOTE(swingaway @ Mar 17 2007 - 06:34 AM) 826415140[/snapback]They pretty much tell you what your role will be. They are upfront.

If you truly believe that I have some swamp land I need to talk with you about. Being up front with what your roll will be is not at all what goes on in general with recruiting. Telling you what it takes to get you there is what happens and once there things change signigicantly. I think that in the recruiting process a player should be told come to school here, show us what you have and if you earn a spot then you will play. Blind promises make for ill will. You have to be given an opportunity to show your talents.

  3. The officials at the White House vs Page game did a horriffic job. They only called 1 penalty on Page in the 4th quarter and missed a lot that should have been called. When Page had the ball it looked like some of the officials would give Page an extra few inches when it was 3rd or 4th down to help them get a 1st down, and on one play in the first half the officials gave them a TD when it looked like the ball did not cross the goal line. When White House got the ball with around 2 minutes left they called a penalty on White House on the 1st play.

This is the longest post timbdp has ever made. Didn't know he had such an extensive vocabulary. He could have covered it in one of his usual on word posts: Whine.

  4. As you know...it happens every year. The ones that did make it are very good. Some very good ones were left off too.

Yes, I know and I think you know this is exactly why I don't care much for "All-Whatever" teams. Big Mac was instumental in MJ's 2nd place finish in the state and certainly deserves the recognition.

  5. *heavy sigh*

I think you are quoting this verse:

" The wolf will live with the lamb,

the leopard will lie down with the goat,

    the calf and the lion and the yearling [a] together;

and a little child will lead them. " (NIV)

Which is Isaiah 11:6. The whole first part of the passage is one of Isaiah's many prophecies of the Messiah (a shoot will arise from Jesse, etc.)...and it is obvious from the context that the 'child' is the Messiah...so this passage certainly does not say anything about putting our children into questionable moral situations so they can witness to people...what it does say is that there will be a Messiah. Unless you are saying that we should let our children lead dangerous wild animals as their witness?

I never said there was an age limit to anything. I said children are not adults and should not be force into adult situations just so they can 'witness'. Leave that kind of stuff to adults. I also said that scripture backs this view over and over...noticed you didn't address that.

Try to find any reference in the OT or NT that advocates putting children into bad situations so they can show their faith...I'll wait.

    p.s. Context is important...

Context has everythig to do with it. Yes Isaiah prophecies were foreseing the coming of a Messiah. And come he did, not what the people were looking/hoping for. A Prince of Peace who didn't hide from the very people who you call "dangerous wild animals." And his last words were the great commission. It did not say everyone over 21 go out and make disciples of all nations.

Is it actually putting children in questionablely dangerous morally situation? Certianly you are not implying that there is danger within the public school situation for a child to think or act as Jesus would do when faced with right and wrong. You witness when you make a choice make a choice on what is right in the eyes of the Lord and back up your decision with appropriate action. I fear you suffer from an elitiest attitude that gives the privates a bad rap.

  7. "Excuse me but the last words the disciples heard from Jesus were the the Great Commision to go our into the world and make disciples of all people. Is that not to witness. The purpose of the Great commision was for Christians to be a witness."

    STD,

Without getting into a huge theological debate, yes, Jesus sent His Disciples out before and after his death. How many of them were children? It seems to me that if we examine Jesus' interactions with children He is always protective of them...but don't take my word for it, look it up for yourself.

Same ideas in the OT...protecting children is a strong theme throughout scripture. You and I both know I could fill up the page with reference verses. Never once does scripture advocate putting children in morally questionable situations so they can "witness" or show how faithful they are...heck, we don't do a good job with that as adults, why in the world would we put our children in those situations (not talking about public ed here...talking about the principles we were discussing)

p.s. Personally I believe that too many of us have bought into society's idea that children are just "little adults". They aren't. Their brains are different, their personalities are different. Their bodies and emotions are different. They shouldn't be forced into adult situations while they are still kids...plenty of time for that once they are grown.

Have you not read the scripture "and a little child shall lead them" Come on do you really think that there is an age limit on being a witness for Christ?

  8. Real reason for starting most of the privates: Because of resistance to integration.

There was integration a long time before the boom in privates. Now bussing to attain racial balance and the establishment of comprehensive high schools with 1500 to 2000 students is probably the real reason. This completely eliminated the public community school concept and was the demise of parental/community support of public high school athletics in the Metro Davidson County area. The parental/community support for a Smith County/Marshall County/etc. remains high because they are a community based school, I don't think you can say that about the 4A and 5A schools in Nashville.

  9. This entire discussion and the start of it seems to be coming from someone who more than likely either never played High School Athletics or 2 was a bench warmer for 4 years. If you do away with public school athletics more than half of the rual counties would not have enough money to run schools. Alot of the money that comes into the schools in rual areas are from the money making sports ex. Football and Basketball. If you dont want your child to go to a public school and stand on the sidelines like you then take him to a private school where he might do the same thing or star. Either way let things be the way they are. As a former public school athlete in metro nashville and now a coach at a private school in nashville i have seen both sides of the issue. The coaches including my self do not get paid nearly enough per the hours we put in every week of every year. And field maintance is most of the time done out of the pocket of the coaches. If you do not like it then move out of the state of Tennessee other wise sit up in the bleachers with everyone else and support your local team.

I have serious doubts that any school in the state has athletic program incom that contributes on red cent to the general operational budget of the school. I secondly doubt that there is one single athletic program in the state that is COMPLETELY independent of general operational budget funds.

  10. And the Bible says a lot of things, but not to "go out and witness" at least to my knowledge. In fact never in the Bible are we told to use our children as some sort of moral crutch or witness for others...quite the opposite, we are exhorted over and over and over again to protect them from morally questionable situations because they aren't ready to handle it yet...they are children

Excuse me but the last words the disciples heard from Jesus were the the Great Commision to go our into the world and make disciples of all people. Is that not to witness. The purpose of the Great commision was for Christians to be a witness.

  11. std,

You know the Tennessean don't have it goin' on.

What's interesting is that all 9 of Greenbrier's starters made All-County OR All-County Honorable Mention. Ditto for East. That's awesome!

Congrats to all and good luck next year!

There is nothing awesome about making this team. I picked up a copy of the Robertson County Times this morining and went to the All Robertson County Softball Team list. My distain for "all whatever" teams has been reinforce with the number of players listed. Shear numbers makes this a joke. There are five high schools in Robertson County. That means there are 45 starters in total for the five softball teams. The All County team had 21 players making the "team" and 17 players listed as "honorable mention." 45 minus 38 equals 7. So there are only 7 total starters left out of the newspaper's All County recognition. The purpose of an "all star" team is to recognize the top players in the game. Literally everyone is listed here except 7 unworthy souls. East Robertson had 7 on the first team and 3 honorable mention. Give me a break.

  12. My personal opinion was that Sarah Fowler, Samantha Bellar, and Kayla Norton should have received some recognition by the Tennessean. Fowler was an anchor ar 3rd, Bellar dangerous from both sides of the plate and Norton pitched great for someone who was called upon to carry the load considering she had not really worked on her pitching that much.

    Moved from another thread

  13. It sure seemed like it was promoted under the assumption that the team would be selected based on their performance in the games. I agree that the team was selected in advance. That would explain why some of the players were chosen even though they had sub-par games on Monday and why the pitcher with the best performance was left off the team. The Centennial pitcher threw 5 innings and faced the minimum of 15 batters with 6-8 K's and no balls hit out of the infield. How do you go to Ky without your best players?

I think the players had to committ to being available for the games. There is a post somewhere on this board to that effect made by Raiderone.

  14. My personal opinion was that Sarah Fowler, Samantha Bellar, and Kayla Norton should have received some recognition by the Tennessean. 15. I wish we could go back to the days with 3 classes and huge championship crowds.

There were hugh crowds at the Softball tourney this year. I bet 500+ were watching our first game with Covington as all the other games were done. The first MJ vs Soddy Game was packed. Saw a lot of coaches, players and fans at the tourney that would not have been there if it was in Memphis or Nooga.

  16.

STD- was that the same umpiring crew that called 4 illegal pitches in the Soddy game that we had in our game? I'm betting it was.

In the Marshall Co game it was the same crew we had had all week. In the Championship game the crews were mixed.

  17. I think on any given day, all of the teams there except for Haywood

could have been playing on the final day for the championship.

And Haywood's day is coming since they were so young.

Just look at the scores, Alcoa loses twice 1-0 & is the first team sent

home. Greenbrier loses twice 1-0, Gibbs lsoes 1-0 & 2-0.

All it takes in any of those games is for one break to go their way

    & it's a whole new ballgame.

That's why I saw one bad call or giving a good hitter an "extra" strike

can be the difference in a tight ballgame. Not making excuses or being a

sore loser, just stating facts. And I've been around this game longer than some

    of you have been alive.

It was a great tourney with great competition. I tip my hat to Goodpasture

for winning the championship, I say congratulations to a gutty Covington

squad for battling out of a tough losers bracket to make it all the way

back to the championship & I salute all the teams who made it to

    Murfreesboro.

As for my favorite team, the Lewisburg Tigerettes, thanks for a tremendous

four year ride. So many thrills, so many memories. A special group

    who made Lewisburg proud.

Well said, one error, a close call, a key hit make all the difference in the world. There were 7 teams capable of winning the championship. Marshall Co. got a call on obstruction at third that led to a run on a ground ball next batter allowing them to beat Greenbrier. We made a throwing error that allowed Covington to go ahead 1-0 early in the game, Greenbrier dropped a throw to the plate that arrived ahead of the only run scored in an elimination game. A very evenly matched tournament.
