1. First of all, one has to know all the facts about a game before judging it. It is true that sometimes a team be called for many more fouls than an opponent. Most times, the strategy of the game is the reason. A few years back, I was coaching a girls team and at half-time the fouls were something like 13 against us and 3 against our opponent. Our fans were yelling at the referees to "call it both ways." What the fans failed to realize is that I had my team pressing and playing an aggressive man-to-man defense while the other team was playing a zone. I never complained about the officiating because I knew that the strategy I decided to employ was the reason, not the referees being biased. I'm sure there have been cases where an official has blown a call, but most of the time, the referees are just calling what they see. Besides, I highly doubt that any of us on this board have never made a mistake doing our jobs. I know I've made many.

That being said, it is true that the number of good referees has gone down the past few years. When the vererans are retiring, there are not many waiting to fill their shoes. There are still some great ones out there, and some good young ones. The problem is the amount of respect that officials are given, mostly by fans. I mean, would you want a job where you know you are going to be yelled at, berated, booed, called every name on Earth, cursed at, have your family degraded, and even threatened? All for about $80 a night? It's no wonder referees are getting harder to come by. I wouldn't do it. It's not worth it.

Most fans don't even realize that officials are doing a favor to the players, coaches, and yes, even the fans by calling games. What if the referees association decided that it wasn't worth the trouble and just stopped working? The games wouldn't be played.

The next time you want to complain about an official and blame a game on bad calls, look at your team's stat sheet. If rebounds, free throws, and turnovers dont tell the story, then maybe, just maybe, you have the right to complain. Until then, thank an official for doing his or her job so that we all can enjoy high school sports.

By the way, I'm not an official, not related to an official, have no desire to be an official, and was NOT held at gunpoint by an official and forced to write this. thumb

  2. Sorry, OCRebel-

I'm heading East. I have a previous committment in Nashville that cannot be changed. I will, however be staying in touch as far as getting updates. Hopefully a trip to Murfreesboro will be in the works when the smoke clears Saturday night.

I'm sure there will be an admirable contingent from Obion County trekking down good ol' US Hwy 51. Should be a "home-away-from-home" game for OC. Hope the trip back isn't a long one for everyone. Be safe!

    Go Lady Rebels!

  3. Being from Obion Co, I would also bet money that when Dennis's other son JB is coaching Westview's boys, he is just as partial to that team. Dennis says nothing bad about Martin's girls, team, coaches, school, or town when he cheers for the Lady Rebels. For goodness sakes, Judy coached most of them! He is only supporting Eddie the same way he supports JB when the Charger boys take the court.

Dennis and Judy have both made major contributions to Martin, both the town and the school system and sports teams. To think otherwise is insane. WesCharge is correct in saying that Martin is lucky to have them.

WesCharge thanks for the well-wishes in the River City. You guys (well, actually you girls) take care of Mitchell and lets take this 13AA party to Rutherford County. Maybe two big shiny basketballs can come back to the district.

As for who gets the gold one.......maybe well have to decide that next weekend.

I'd pay money to see Round 5.

    Go Lady Chargers!

    GO LADY REBS!

  4. But as I observed the oc student body, the only thing they were concerned with was were are we going after the game. Thursday night they will be saying Memfis.

It shouldn't really matter who goes where to play. I would imagine that both Westview and Obion Co. would be favored to win the substate games. Not that I'm saying that either is unbeatable, but they should both win, regardless of who stays home. Lets hope so, and then we can represent 13AA well in Murfreesboro.

    Go Lady Rebels!!!

  5. The technical for the dunk should never have been called.  If the official felt that it was the wrong thing for Doaks to do at that time, pull him asside and tell him that and issue a stern warning.  The game was too big to be quick with a call.  Sometimes patience needs to be practiced.

    NFHS 2004-2005 Basketball Rules Book

    Rule 10 Fouls and Penalties

    Section 3 Player technical

    Article 4-

A player shall not Grasp either basket during the time of the officials jurisdiction, dunk or stuff, or attempt to dunk or stuff a dead ball prior to or during the game or during any intermission until jurisdiction of the officials has ended. This item applies to ALL team members.

    Article 6-

A player shall not Delay the game by acts such as :

    a. Failing when in control, to immediately pass the ball to the nearer official when a violation or foul is called.

Sportsradio- If you recall in the 1st half, Doaks did dunk well after he had been fouled and the whistle had been blown. When Dan Boykin was reporting the foul to the scorer's table, veteran official Tommy Sewell did pull Nicchaeus aside and give him a warning. I feel that that in itself showed patience on the officials' part. He could have been called for a tech right then and there. The dunk that did result in the technical was completely uncalled-for. Had it been called at his own foul line and he continued 15 feet for the dunk, then that's one thing. However, to go to the far goal and perform a rock-the-cradle windmill (which was BEAUTIFUL, I might add) was simply too much for the officials to ignore. As the NFHS rule book clearly states, Doaks committed a violation and was penalized. It wasn't a judgment call; it was a violation in which there is a clearly defined consequence. If this consequence is reversed, then we may as well just quit having officials at the games at all. The three officials at that game did a great job.

By the way, I have no ties whatsoever to Lake County or Peabody or even Single A ball. I just want to see the right thing being done.

  6. WesCharge.......are you OK???? Did I read that last post right???? GO Lady Rebels?!?!?!?! Are you seeing Fullcourtpress's pink elephants??? Maybe you need to lie down. You're scaring me.

    Oh yeah-Go Lady Rebels!

  7. At least you had a Small School Division to play in. Currently, West Tennessee has one division for over 100 middle schools. The smallest West TN TSSAA member has an enrollment of about 100 students (K-8) while the largest has an enrollment of over 1400 (6-8). Talk about no-win situations!

  8. Give me a break!...they play teams in the conference they are placed in...I don't hear anyone accusing the coach of anything ...no one but you anyway....go back and play in your own conference thread loser!.....Congrats again ladies on an awesome season!

    825561751

First of all, congratulations to Camden. In response to the comment that the schools arent placed in a conference, Camden is not a member of TMSAA. Big Sandy, Lakewood, and Henry are. They are in TMSAA Area 6 with Paris Inman, Martin Middle School, Trenton Rosenwald Middle School, Black Oak, Hillcrest, Lake Road, Ridgemont, and South Fulton. They never play in that district. So, Lakewood, Big Sandy, and Henry do have a conference assigned by the state.

  9. Even if there is an "official scorer", I still have my own scorer at the table who knows the game well enough to not let a situation like that happen. If the official scorer misses something, my scorer can get the game stopped, call the referees and coaches over, and get it straight. As as coach, I am usually so caught up in the game, I dont catch the little things which can ultimately turn into big things (as shown by this event.) Sorry for your season ending on such a bad note. That's a cheap way to win a game regardless of who it happens to.

  10. NOW!! With all that said, will there be a coin flip to see who gets to call the coin flip?

    825560087

If the Wizard has anything to do with it, I bet WV assistant Lyle Larue calls the flip. I mean, one should look no farther than last years Crockett Co. Lady Cavalier team to know that Lyle has luck on his side. That's not said to take anything away from Lyle or CC, just to say that the stars have a way of lining up for him.

  11. Obion only loses 3 seniors this year, only 2 of which see significant playing time. And one of those, Bethel signee Jenna Roney hasn't played since Christmas because of a break and surgery on her foot. During her absence, the Lady Rebels have gone 10-2 with the two loses coming only to AA # 2 Westview and AAA # 7 Dyersburg. That included a wins over Gibson Co. and Collinwood. Westview will surely be a force next year, but so will the Lady Rebs. K-Mac and E-Suit will have some hum-dingers.

  12.   mason a senior gets ball with 16 seconds and shoots a 2 pointer -(worried about her stats - not game) dc needed a 3 to tie.

    825538924

And we see why candycane doesn't coach. If Lake County wasn't hitting foul shots, then Coach Stafford was taking a chance on a 2 and then a quick foul. Obviously, Mason's shot dropped and they did foul. Lake County must have missed the free throws (exactly as Coach Stafford planned), which gave DC the chance for a 2 to win. Mason must have felt rushed and shot too soon. Big deal. I see nothing that says Mason is selfish or was worried about her stats. As a coach, Id rather have a 2 pointer to win, and not a 3 to tie. End of story. Candycane---Don't quit your day job.

  13. all you dreamers for an OC win will definitely wake up tomorrow nite

    quick....someone pinch me.......am I dreaming?????

3Pointer, I was about to let you have it until I saw you own up to defeat. That should give everyone (me included) an added respect for you, especially when so many cowards hide behind a screen. As for the game, the Lady Chargers played hard and are very talented, but it was just OC's night. Who knows what will happen next time. I guess this puts the bullseye on OC's back. Lets hope for a combined record of 28- 1 when these two meet @ the Pit on January 11.

    Get up Rebs!

    (borrowed from WesCharge)

  14. Lake County has only 3 seniors on the roster at all so they will return practically intact. As far as the powerhouse days, I can't believe you didn't include the rumors about the 20 year olds and the ones they'd bring in from the prison on Friday nights! Lake County has been accused of using illegal players anytime they have success. A small school will go through periods where they have both talent and good coaching. That happened in the 70's-mid 90's and is resurfacing now. Give credit where credit is due.

    825406323

Good point NWhoopaholic. Good to see the boys in Green and Gold back to themselves. I look forward to the baskeball season and hearing from you, even thought is always tough to put away the pads. Oh well, there's always next year. Get 'em Falcons.

  15. Say what you want, but jumping up and down and yelling "I didnt touch him" is going to be taken as showing up an official about 90% of the time. This is not the NBA. Even if you were talking to yourself, its going to sound like you were blasting the official. That's your coach's job (if the complaint is legitimate). If everybody did it, think about how out of control the game would be. Refs are doing you a favor by calling your games. Taking them for granted cannot be tolerated. True, there are some bad referees, but there are just as many good ones. Making a call against you doesn't make a ref bad.

And Idunk2.....I agree.....Calls dont decide games, players & coaches do.

By the way.... I'm a coach and NOT a referee.

  16. By the way, powerset, if Union City became a private school, the funding for the school would come from tuition and donations, not from the county.  As for funding the education of city kids, the county receives funds from the state, county residents and UC resident - in the form of taxes - to fund the education of kids.  Like I stated earlier, UC residents pay taxes that go toward the education of both city and county students - something county residents do not.  It was the choice of city residents when the UCSSD was formed.

I didn't mean to imply that private school students would be funded by OC citizens. Thats why I said that many UC people are more than able to fund a private school, both its opening and their student's tuitions.

Also, like you said, it was the UCSSD's decision to form their own system and create a separate city education tax. If the UCSSD gave up control of their schools, that would not be Obion County's decision and the county would have to raise taxes to make up for the added expense of more students. So, basically, Union City would be getting rid of their problems (aging buildings and debt) at the County's expense and Obion County couldn't do a thing about it. And, if the current tax funds used for schools in the city are taken away from education and given to roads, parks, etc., the tax hike for the county would be substantial.

None of this is written out of anger and it is not intended to point fingers at anyone. I worked in Union City for years and still have many, many friends there, including current administration at many levels. I'm just afraid that Obion County will suffer and Union City will come out smelling like a rose. I want everyone to benefit from any changes and not see someone suffer from them.
