Sounds like the DB offense didn't show. Bearden seemed in control all the way. I bet they will be nipping at Christian's heels up on Broad Street next week.

I really don’t know where DB could even find a suitable coach should Christian be dismissed.

I mean we literally searched the entirety of the United States and found Christian right under our nose.

What’s next? An international coaching search? Interplanetary?

Great words coach after the game. Might not be what the fans want to hear but you are right, football is a small part of life and the future is a lot more important to these young men. Roll Tribe. I remember a DB team that had the flu several years ago after killing a highly ranked South team and then  going against the top 5A team that next week. It's a part of it but saying your guys gave all they had tonight will mean a lot to them and those close to them,

Some coaches are good at post-game speeches following a loss.

Others are good at winning games.

    Which do we have?

They had them last year. But you won't have them every year unless you're building them. At DB they have to wait until a good group just shows up. At Maryville, Greeneville and Elizabethton they build them. umm, maybe that's why they all have multiple state championships.

Incorrect. They didn’t have them at linebacker or at corner or safety. Ask anyone. They even admitted as much. DB is slow.

you like to reference D Watson, correct? His trademarks: Athletic corners that lived on an island and blitz pressure on the QB.

I can’t speak for what happens at Greenville or Betsy. But, I can tell you how Maryville and Alcoa do it. I live in Knoxville, and I coached several of the kids that played at those schools. Heck, Betsy had a DB transfer playing QB one year.

Tell me what DB should be doing better schematically in their defensive backfield rather than stating "they've got people runnnin' behind them, come on coach" with your Eastman Plant shirt on in the fourth row with your tobacco lip full.

First and foremost, DB needs more and better athletes in the skill positions. The didn’t really have them last year, and they don’t have them this year.

Secondly, they need to get more pressure from up front.

The irony of a DB coach not wearing a mask after their football team refused to play because of a false positive on their opponents team is quite jarring.

TSSAA states a mask must be worn in doors at all times. Poore and Cutlip didn’t follow that even though all other coaches and fans participated in “Stopping the Spread”. There are many concerns of a super spreader event next week when they play. I would expect masks will be worn moving forward.

Your post is factually incorrect relative to DB’s football team.

Lol......you serious Clark? You should do some research before embarrassing yourself on a public forum. Show us your body of work before posting complete BS.

So, I guess you are telling me that EVERY Alcoa and Maryville player is from inside the city limit of their respective cities? I dare you to answer, “YES”.

Again, I don’t have a problem with it. But, call it what it is.

Most of Maryville's players did. Explain Elizabethton and Greeneville. Their not "regional teams". You can't watch a DB game and not notice they have some serious coaching problems. It's not a talent problem.

Elizabethton recently won a state championship. Remind us where this QB transferred from? I’ll help help with the answer: he transferred from DB. Greenville had lots of talent.

DB has some talent, but are we athletic? Do you see a Swafford, Gaines, Foreman, Graves, Hayes, Sensabaugh, etc. in the WR or DB rotation? Science Hill was certainly more athletic. Cleveland was, as well. We have a collection of possession WRs, and our DBs that are consistently getting beat. Again, JIMMYS AND JOES!

Do you seriously think DB is athletic?

I’m not saying that coaching isn’t important, but every team everywhere that wins a championship was/is talented. If it was about coaching, Coach K would win every year. Seriously, how many teams have better players than Nick Saban? His formula is to have better players.

I don't speak for everybody but when I say it's all coaching I'm not saying that as a knock against Christian. There's a lot more pieces to the puzzle than the head coach. When I say it's all coaching I'm talking about from the ground up. From the little leagues to middle school, to the freshman and then to varsity. In Kingsport we are very weak on coaching in the lower leagues. You'll never compete with the Maryville's and Alcoa's until they fix that. Heck we can't even beat a average Science Hill team.

For you to believe that all those Maryville and Alcoa kids actually played in either of those little league programs is incredibly naive.

I coached a few myself that ended up down there. I don’t blame the kids/parents. They went there for exposure and to chase championships. Both programs routinely draw kids from Knox, Sevier, Blount, etc. counties.

In addition to the influx of talent from outside their respective school districts, but programs have excellent strength and conditioning programs.

Football is not a complicated game. The honest Alcoa coaches will tell you that it’s Jimmys and Joes that win football games. If DB really wants to win they will need to become a regional football team.

So we haven't had the right horses in the stable for like 30 years? And what technique are they using to let receivers get 10 yards behind your entire secondary on half the routs they run? I'm telling you, without that line getting all that pressure on the QB DB wouldn't be undefeated right now.

At times we have had a nice secondaries through the years. More recently not.

An effective pass rush will mask alot of problems in the secondary. Most everyone knows that. You may remember that Watson loved to pressure the QB. When you blitz,  you leave your DBs on an island. That's part  of the gamble.

Again, it's really a function of having the right horses. Deion Sanders was a pretty good DB - even without great technique.

I hate to be so negative after a win but good god why can't we find somebody that can coach defensive backs. As bad as DB has been over the years I actually think this group is the worst I've seen. Receivers running wide open on almost every play. If not for the pressure on the QB DB losses this game. It's a shame because DB looks like their checking all the boxes except the secondary. Just blows my mind.

Believe me it isn't a question of technique but more of athlete.

DB wasn't close to losing this game. DB absolutely mashed Bearden upfront. Bearden knew what was coming, and they were only able to slow it down.

Just to put this back on top ... Packer picked Oak Ridge by 21 in fact all three picked Oak Ridge.

Packer also said that DB fans were 'overreacting' to the Greeneville loss. Yeah, right.

Packer did make a good point about Witten interviewing for the DB job but not being hired. He mentioned that Witten's Cyclones just beat DB's biggest rivals, and those same biggest rivals would probably beat DB shortly.

Packer is hardly a savant, but I give him credit for that point.

RTR and Sweet I understand your perspectives and obviously hope and expect HVA to improve.

I wouldn’t consider last night getting demolished - as painful as it was to watch at times.

Now 43-3... that feels more like demolished! :)

‘Demolished’ accurately describes what happened in Kingsport, but that’s another thread.

If you think ‘demolished’ is too strong for what happened to HVA, pick another word. Whatever you pick, it won’t be positive.

Alright I'll bite... through summer scrimmages the HVA Offense was able to move the ball and put up points (granted these were just  scrimmages) against Knox Catholic, Bradley Central, Soddy Daisy, and William Blount (don't laugh).  Had success throwing in 7v7 against Fulton, Webb, Corbin, Chatty East, and Alcoa.  To say there are "no players" after one bad night seems naïve.  As I recall, OR would have been declared a mess after the Farragut game last year if that was the only body of evidence to judge their team by.

Apart from a frustrated and tenacious QB, last night there was virtually no run game for HVA and I credit the OR D-line and LB's combined with poor play from the HVA front 5.  Throw in a soggy ball and several dropped passes and you wind up with a pretty lousy offensive night.  68 total yards at the half and just over 170 by the end of the game is definitely a disappointing night (just ask GCA down the road).  I will agree with you that the OC seems to have gathered his playbook from Butch Jones and company, but X's and O's worked for even UT when the team executed.  I'll agree with your "creativity" comment as I wish the playbook was adjusted to the strength of the players year to year - but that is not the case at HVA.

Mark my words that there ARE "players" on both sides of the ball at HVA.  (Ironically, the HVA QB happened to win a Watauga League championship up in Upper East TN catching a throwback pass from DB's starting QB when they were in 6th grade.  That was an awesome group of youngsters to watch play that year!)  Give the offense time and it will pick up... same thing happened last year but we had us a D1 stud to carry the rock until the rest of the crew figured things out (we did miss him last night).

I'll be done with my opinion and say that OR moved fast and aggressively all night against an offense hampered by weather, poor blocking, and pesky DB's from OR.  I'm sure that OR will kindly demonstrate their defensive strength next week to the Indians... I may have to eat crow again, but DB better buckle up those chin straps tight when they run out on the field at the Ship.

I hope you are right, but I don’t think so.

Historically, HVA’s strength has been physical play from both lines. That’s not going to be the case this year.

I just don’t see any play makers. Dykes is gone. And, he was really the only consistent playmaker on last year’s team. The Hawks have never had a vertical passing game, and this year is no different.

By all indications, the OR folks don’t think they have a great teaM this year. That’s their fans saying that. And, they demolished HVA.

Again, I hope you are right and that I am wrong.

Is HVA offense that bad, or did our D just make it look bad? Maybe it was just an off night, or maybe a bit of all of those things? Guess we will see.

I think they really are that bad.

No players at the skill positions, no line and a lack of creativity/imagination on the offensive side of the ball.

  16. As far as what I said about Rosser, I am just reporting what I was told. I can’t begin to tell you if the story has legs.

I can tell you that the same source knew that Lowe was leaving TKA for Powell before the story broke.  Take that for what you will.

I am told that Rosser would be a very nice hire for the Indians. He is well thought of in the Knoxville area.

If I had to guess, I would suspect that DB will hire a local guy like Witten. A local guy will have an easier time with hiring a staff. If they brought in a guy from say Los Angeles or Miami, how would they be able to fill out a staff? They probably wouldn’t know enough about who to hire from the small pool of (potential) assistant coaches in upper East Tennessee.

I can’t lead you or show you where I heard it, but I can tell you.

It was overheard at the recent UT coaching clinic.
