Same advantages as Bradley of the early 2000s huh…staff, move ins and facilities

    Well, no. Not close.

But don't limit your inaccurate comparison to the EARLY 2000's. That would only involve 4-5 years. I hear that Bradley didn't lose a single dual meet, or ANY event to Cleveland for EIGHTEEN STRAIGHT years.

    Done.

  2. So now, in your arrogance, you're going to insist with confidence that many Cleveland backups would have surely taken the State medals away from others across the State that actually earned them and obviously also beaten the Bradley starters the night it was tied 25-25 going into the LAST match of the State Finals ? Wow.

I've already wasted too much time on this. I knew better in the first place. I'm done.

Which move-ins are you referring to? Cordell?

Logan, Cy, Lucas and Jax scored 54 team points, Cleveland still wins by 13.5.

Ok.... Now use that same rationale for the State Dual Finals, which came down to ONE match..

Do you think those little ol' move ins were important THAT night?

  5. Never used the word cheating, but it's almost funny that Cleveland attributes all of their success to "outworking everyone".. True, there is a strong work ethic, but that also applies to the Coach at a small rural school with very little funding, little tradition, little support who practices in the cafeteria with one Assistant who may have never wrestled.

Yes, Cleveland has done well, and deserve credit, but the lack of acknowledgement of their clear advantages in staff , support, move-ins and facilities is interesting.

As I think it was mentioned in another comment. The reason for MidTn vs chatt was because if you wrestle for public schools around the chatt area you find your way to Cleveland or Bradley. Not saying the other schools don’t have good kids but those are always top 2. heck kids from Midtn find their way to Cleveland to wrestle.

This is the second time this idea has been floated in this thread. The insinuation that outside Wrestlers "Find their way to Cleveland or Bradley". If you look back in recent history, Cleveland has benefited from many Wrestlers who did not attend Elementary/Middle school in Cleveland.

By and Large, Bradley H.S. Wrestlers are Bradley Co. Kids, Period!

Win or lose, they don't plug anticipated holes in their line-up with talented middle schoolers who happen to "move in".

I don't care what they do, but it's not accurate to cast Bradley in that same light.

  7. Yeah,... I'm also from this neck of the woods, but I don't see the point in being arrogant and condescending toward the wrestling community in Middle Tennessee. I'm pretty sure they didn't do all of the voting.

  8. Well stated, Oceansize42. While Cleveland is dominant right now, their complaint/theory doesn't hold water. They're no more dominant than Bradley has been through their 26 State Championships, and a Bradley Wrestler toted the O.W. home 7-8 years.

Of course, on the Cleveland theory side, Matt Keller won the O.W. his Freshman year, then never again although he was clearly the most dominant wrestler by far. Not even when he won his 4th State Title in '02.

Bentley Ellison at 106 wrestled a heckuva match losing 4-3. Wrestling a senior that’s 18-19 years old and him being a freshman at 14 weighing 100lbs. That young man has a bright future

No one is going to disagree that Bentley wrestled a good, tough match. But, why the need to misrepresent the BCHS wrestlers age as 18 or 19, when neither is true? Why the need to embellish? Bentley's performance was impressive on its own. No need to just make stuff up.

What a season. What a state tournament! Ups and downs. Between seniors missing the podium and freshman winning it all this years state tournament really did have it all. Here are some of my thoughts on this seasons grand cow palace finale.

    1. Region 6 ran away with it this year with 4 right behind them and then 7. I heard someone say that this was the first year in twenty some odd years that Bradley didn't have a finalist. I haven't fact checked that so I'm not sure on the accuracy there but if so than that is crazy. Cleveland had two finalists and Soddy had only one medal. I'm not here bashing region 4 by any means. I'm saying that, while it may have taken some years, it would appear as if the rest of the state is finally starting to step up their level of competition to meet region 4. Now that's not to say that Cleveland isn't the favorite again next year, because they obviously are. I'm simply saying next year may finally be the year that another team steps in and brings home a state championship.

    2. Wow, that's really all I can say about all the entertaining finals matches. 113, 126, 132, 138, 145, 182, 220, all of these final matches were so close and if they were rewrestled im not sure I could pick the same kid to win twice with any certainty.

    3. With the above said, 113 was ABSOLUTELY the right call. The Peterson for the win was awesome! As for the Bartlett coaching staff I get it, its the state finals, your kid is a senior, it was a really close call, they were for sure right to question the call. However, I didn't like seeing the kid refuse to shake the Wilson Central kids hand at first, and I really hated seeing the coaching staff refuse to leave the match until they were told to leave. It just didn't have any class. You have to lose graciously too. Take a note from Chase Brown and the way he handled defeat. He hugged Cameron Henderson, walked over to the Smyrna coaches and gave them a hug, then walked over to his coaches and hugged them too and walked away. To me, that showed class. He gave up the takedown at the end and then another takedown at the beginning of overtime and had his dream crushed in a span of 20 seconds and two takedowns. But he still gave the other wrestler the respect he had earned. Bravo Chase.

    4. I really loved all the diversity in the finals. 152 and 160 had kids in the finals that weren't even on the final rankings and 113 was won by a kid that wasn't ranked! That's awesome! To see kids show up under everybody's radar and go all the way to the end is truly amazing and inspiring.

That's about what I got guys. Time to get fat and come back ready for freestyle and Greco! See you in a couple months. And as always GO SPARTANS!

In fact, Bradley has had at LEAST one State CHAMPION every year since 1993. (7 years before this year's Seniors were BORN!)

  12. The top kids are still the top kids, but it is much easier to place now than it was 10-20 years ago. I have helped with a few programs for the past few years and I have whipped up on some state placers last 5-10 years and I was one round away from placing and I am fat and out of shape now so I know my wrestling has not gotten better. Now the top kids maybe but the 3-6 has not gotten better than the past and now with 3 divisions instead of 1 or even 2 there will be kids that have no business with a medal, get one because they go to a school with a smaller population of students. I mean the best way of making programs better and to have interest in growing the sport starts with more youth programs not more placers! I mean 2 of the top public schools in the state have been Bradley and Cleveland and they are in the SAME county so they divide a lot of their stud wrestlers and yet year after year there they are and now they have Walker Valley joining them, and I am sure if they had a 1A school open up there that team would have some studs also! Has nothing to do with having more placers, that county presses wrestling even more so than football and some other sports and it starts with their youth programs, same with Soddy Daisy and their youth program. Kids most of the time cannot wait until high school to decide to start or they prob have no chance to medal. This split helps nothing with that just like having the girls state I mean it has been a joke so far. Hardly any numbers at all so I guess to grow it lets start a small school girls and than a big school division and maybe they will come. This is not Field of Dreams, if kids want to wrestle they have to want it, they need to start early because this is the toughest sport out there!

Nice post, Cobra. The only disagreement I have is that "maybe the top guys are tougher today than 10 years ago". About 10 years ago, we had guys like K. Ward, M.Keller, J.Yost,R. Blackmon,J. Leen, M.McCarty, Q. Gibson, K. James, P. Simpson, etc, etc, etc... To say that the top-tier guys today are tougher than these guys..?
  13. They are the best the state has to offer. This banter will not

alter the calls made over the weekend or make lil Johnny feel

better about the outcome of his match. If you know any qualified

refs willing to make the calls, I'm sure the state would be willing

to add him to their list.

Wrong... The TSSAA is more concerned with getting equal representation from each part of the state rather than securing the "best the state has to offer". It's kind of like the teams that get to attend the State duals while other (better) teams have to stay home. Equal representation regardless of quality. While there is really no "fix" for the State duals problem, the referree problem is do-able.
  14. Cleveland has had a lot of success over the years, but what brought them back to the elite level was hiring Heath Eslinger and just as vital was Heath's hiring of Eric Phillips as the MS coach at CHS, and Heath's formation (along with Coach Al Morris of Walker Valley) of the Higher Calling Wrestling Club as a kids club. Walker Valley has since started their own kids club, but they actually started Higher Calling together. Before that, Bradley had the only kid's club in town and most all the young wrestlers (many who were sons of former Bradley and Cleveland wrestlers) were in the Bradley club and ended up at Bradley. Hiring Heath was the first step, but if he hadn't gotten lucky and found Eric Phillips (which is another story trasomeone can tell better than me) and started the kids club, they probably aren't where they are today. Also, FWIW, Heath and Eric Phillips are better people than they are wrestlers or wrestling coaches and they are obviously two of the best coaches in the state of TN.

Which "sons of former wrestlers of Cleveland HS "ended up wrestling for Bradley HS ??
  15. from the great state of Michigan. I have actually heard states alot down here, maybe its all of us yankees talking to each other

Well, maybe we should start saying it more down here... After all, there is some pretty good wrestling going on up there in yankee-land! Every little bit helps... maybe we should say "soda" or "pop" more often, too.. Also, we should call our toboggans "stocking caps". Whatever you guys are doing is working..
  16. Anyone know any contenters moving up or down for individual states

States?...Which northern state do you come from? No offense,.. i have just always found it interesting that the term "states" is used in the north, but rarely, if ever in the South. How do you think that started? Why is it plural?
  17. No one is making their own rules; they are established by the TSSAA. That doesn't mean they are good rules. Any rule that penalizes a kid for making what they believe to be the right decision for their future is wrong in my mind. In no way do these rules benefit student athletes. These rules are for the benefit of adults; administrations and coaches. If that is what you want then you are happy. Call it whining, moaning, or whatever else you want but rules that penalize teenagers for important decisions that may positively impact the rest of their lives seem wrong to me.

    Ok,...I'm happy.
  18. No question, it is crucial that we control the "chaos" created by kids and their parents making decisions about what is best for their future. We all know that their current schools and coaches really know what is best for them. Who do these people think they are disagreeing with a coach's decisions and instead of living with it deciding to go somewhere else that has a philosophy that is more in line with their own. And even worse, it is obvious that we can't have families transferring to other schools because of academic reasons. It is just too chaotic to the athletic program of their current schools. Obviously individuals must be penalized for making these misguided choices for their own future clearly based on "selfishness".

Hey, go wherever you want. Just be prepared to abide by the established rules that our governing body has set. Some folks can be a bit spoiled and want to make their own rules or at least whine and moan about the consequences of their decision. Just like the public-private debate (let me take a wild guess which one you are associated with), your opinion here depends on which side of the fence you're on and your personal experiences.
  19. So much misinformation in this thread to go along with the speculation that it is almost comical.

    Soms,

You quite often post things that you know to be wrong, inflammatory, and / or outlandish just so you can get a reaction... I know this and I am still going to let you win just this one time.

You and most people know full well papabear's stance on this issue. He has championed a vote to change the eligibility rules regarding transfer students and boarding schools towards the TSSAA the last two years. Each of the previous two years it has been voted down by the coaches. In no way, shape, or form would he be supportive of the TSSAA ruling for Tate to be eligible, but like the rest of us he will have to deal with whatever the TSSAA decides. That is why most of us are waiting on a decision to be rendered before going wild with commenting. There are enough comments out there full of half-truths to keep everyone guessing and wrong for long enough... better to just let the process play itself out

On a personal note I am never happy to see an opportunity taken away from a kid. It just never makes sense at the individual level. However, when you look at something like this, in my opinion, it is the TSSAA's job to look at what their rulings would mean for the system. This is why the rules are written the way they are.

I know what most people familiar with the situation expect the TSSAA's ruling to be but it is just a wait and see game for when the eligibility request is submitted. I have seen the TSSAA make some head-scratcher decisions that were highly inconsistent in the past, no clue if that will be the case this time.

I don't think that anyone wants to see an "opportunity taken away from a kid". However, something else must be considered here. I have absolutely no knowledge of this particular situation or it's' particulars. What I do have knowledge of is the ever-increasing trend of student athletes and their parents deciding to puff up and take their "franchise" athlete somewhere else as soon as they disagree with a coaches' decision regarding any particular issue. Of course, this isn't a new phenomenon, which is exactly why these rules were put in place in the first place long ago. Like many things in our society which involve selfishness and nepotism, it's just getting worse. Without these TSSAA rules, it would be constant chaos.
  20. Taketop, don't mind your defensive posture what so ever. Never said I could personally out coach, out smart, or gain the most friends on here or Facebook or wherever. Thank goodness that isn't my objective, cause I probably would not sleep well at night. Hey,,, I May even be a below average arm chair quarterback, but I appreciate where Tn wrestling is going... and I believe others may at least support my view that parity around the state is here and now ...and its exciting to see Cleveland, bc, Baylor mccallie, cbhs, Ryan, Clarksville,Soddy ALL Competing again. I'm stoked!!!

Btw, not christianna, It's christianburg, va if I recall. My plate is fine thank you!!icon_e_smile.gif

Sommers!!... Did you just attempt to call out Taketop for using the term "Christianna"? He was SARCASTICALLY using that term referring to YOU using it in the previous post! It was YOUR mistake.. You're correcting YOURSELF without even realizing it! Jiminy Christmas!
