  1. They will play Anderson Co., Campbell Co., Clinton, Central, Karns, Hardin Valley, Oak Ridge, and Powell in district games. I am not sure who the 2 non-district games will be, but I'm guessing Gibbs will be one of them since they play them every year.

The TSSAA web site has Hardin Valley, Oak Ridge, and Karns listed as 6A football schools. The rest are 5A football.

  2. Stan,

Cooper was the center of Melrose's offense. He gained over 2000 yards.

Melrose lost to Christian Brothers because they stacked the box and were able to shut down the run, and Melrose had no passing game at that time.

Show me any situation where all the fans are happy with a coach's decisions.

I have had sons on the Maryvilles's team since 1999 and have seen some very good backs play against us. Not one team has been successful, not even remotely, using the kind of scheme that you wished coach Flowers had used. Tim Gray QB with Hillsboro/2001 came closer than any, and that includes the best back that I have seen in my time watching Maryville football as an insider, so to speak...Daniel Bullock/Hixson 2000 now in the pros with someone, I think.

Believe it or not, we see teams with speed during the season..maybe not Melrose but teams with good speed...Alcoa, Central come to mind. Maryville is next to impossible to run wide on with any success. Coach Flower in one of his post game comments said as much. Maryville players may not be track stars but they play great position and they do a superb job of flying to the ball. If a back is looking for cut back lanes or trys to bounce out side...the persuit is there. Running inside is no picnic either...Meet Mr. Tucker and Mr. Smith, and Mr. Jackson, and ETC.

Melrose is a good team with a lot of weapons. How do you fault a coach for trying to make use of them. At the end of the day.... Players have to make plays in big games, and Melrose had some opportunities....our QB threw the ball right to their DB for heaven's sake. If he caughts it he goes for six, no question.

I think you should give the players on both sides alot more credit for the game they played. As much respect and love that I have for the Maryville coaching staff, I am sure that they have never called a perfect game, or had a perfect game plan. They do not block, or tackle...our players do.

Thats why the playoffs are the only way to determine a champion. Players decide the game on the field. Maybe Melrose was the better team in some respects, or on paper or by count of players that run 4.5s etc. BUT MARYVILLE did the best job of keeping Melrose from scoring and found enough offense to score more points.

Maryville was the better team yesterday. Our players make the difference with the help of our coaches.

And by the way weren't you a Hillsboro supporter when we played them? And another thing if you are comparing UT's coaching staff to Melrose's you are giving them way to much credit :thumb:

The Bullocks twins from Hixon, most likely the two best athletes Maryville has ever faced. Josh Bullocks is now with the Saints and Danial is expected to be one of the top safeties drafted this season.

Maryville has no problem stopping great talent.

  3. There is NO compaison to Maryville and Alcoa at the end of the season........no fan of either of the teams, but Alcoa would smoke Maryville at this time of the year......

Give me a break, first you post this garbage on a thread congratulating Maryville's 6th state championship out of the last 8. When was the last time Alcoa won 6 out of 8 state championships?

Just because Alcoa has a hand full of tallent (undiscipline tallent at that) does not mean they can hang with solid teams with overall better kids across the board. Also, THEY ARE A 2A TEAM. They whipped up on 2A teams. If Alcoa was in region 3-4A they would not even made it to the playoffs, 2A ball is not even close to as physical as 4A-5A ball. On top of that if they were in 3A they would probaly not even win state. You say that Maryville would not want to play Alcoa right now, well guess what, both teams have gotten better, and Maryville whipped little Alcoa at the start of the season and would whip them at the end. Not to mention that after a physical season in 4A, Alcoa would not be near where they are now, as they would physically wore down.

    Now back to the thread.

Great job Maryville on another dominating season and great win when it mattered. Once again GQ proves that he is the best coach in TN. Congratulations on the title, you boys deserve it.

Maybe next year a KFL team will be able to reclaim the mountain, its been so long I dont think they know what it looks like up there.

    Once again great job.

  4. OMW, that's not good!

If the rain does move in, it's gonna add even more drama to this game.

Does the rain tend to affect offenses or defenses more?

It effects both. But on defense most quick movements are reaction to the offensive player. This can maybe cause more slips for the defense since the offensive player can usually prepare for a cut, decreasing the chance for a slip. If that makes sense.

A wet surface will slow the game down, which could counter Melrose's speed alittle. Could make it a sloppy game.

  5. No actually me and my college buddies watched this game on CSS. Central should of won that game, if not for a horrible pass by Helton. Maryville show some weaknesses on offense that night, that I am not going to state on here, but go back and watch the game film and do some film studying yourself. Official stats mean nothing come Saturday, the only stats that will matter come Saturday is the final score at the end of the game.

Maryville dominated on both sides of the ball, if Maryville had not made stupid mistakes the score would have been 31-0 or worse.

Now the playoff game was alittle different. But I do not believe Melrose has that much more speed than Central, and Maryville handled them just fine, twice.

  6. I believe the reason Maryville wins this one is the same reason they have won 82 of their last 84. Coach George Quarles.

Maryville with out a doubt will be more prepared going into the game. Too many times over the past 84 games Maryville has not had the edge in tallent and came out on top. Not to take anything away from the tallent Maryville has had, but their tallent is not what wins ball games.

It is amazing to see the execution and discipline that Maryville displays. And their kids are a huge part of it. But the coaching staff at Maryville knows how to get the best out of what they have and they get every bit of it.

Please dont get me wrong, the Maryville players are very tallented and play with tremendous heart. The coaching staff just makes them that much better, and has allowed them to be as dominate as they have been.

Good luck Rebels, bring it back to East Tennessee.

  7. NO....If Vince Young went pro.....That would be great for the Titans to draft.....

Vince Young? Are you kidding me? He is probaly the most over rated QB since Ryan Leaf. Mark my words, he will never be a succesful QB in the NFL.

He is just another Vick who can move well, but cant make consitent throws, much less read complex defenses.

  8. I think there are some various reasons.

    1. Family, alot of late nights and time away from family is required to be succesful at the college level.

    2. I think many coaches enjoy the purity of high school football. Not as much politics involved.

    3. The chance to develop young men not only for football, but for the rest of their lives. Making winners of them on and off the field.

    4. Also believe there is an added satisfaction in winning with what you have. Not being able to just recruit who you want or need.

  9. Listen up to all the Seniors for the Red Devils i know pretty much all of you all and played some ftball with u all growing up, don't go out there proud of what u all have done this year, forget all of that u all are now 0 - 0 its playoff time i love all u all senior guys and it has to be said that u all have won alot of ur games this year because of heart and iknow that u all have it and thats what its going to take to get a win this friday go down there and whip some butt play hurt if u have to, to get a win because this could be your alls last game dont go 1 and done this year go down there and win i know u all are hungry so prove it and bring CLo a win back to Ktown, ill be in chat town watching u all so dont disappoint me and play ur hearts out that goes big time for Terd,Black,Lucas, Boruff and Reese , lay someone out and throw Up the L's like we did! Do it one time for the Candyman!

    HHS 24

    Red Bank 20

Throw up L's? What on earth are talking about? And who is "we"? CLo, KTown, Chat Town, why dont you try talking like someone from Halls.

  10. Knox Halls Red Devils suprised some folks with their 7-3 season. I think most people had them at best a 5-5 team.

I think Powell had a far less than expected season going 6-4. Granted they had two very close losses, but on the other hand had some close wins also.

Fulton dissapointed most with their 0-3 start, but rebounded with 7 straight wins.

Sevier County made a huge turn around from their last few seasons to go 8-2, with one 3 point loss to DB.

Bearden rebounded pretty well from a 1-9 season with a 5-5 season.

Karns is still turning that program around with a competitive 5-5 season.

Jefferson County seemed to have a dreadfull season lossing 7 straight to end 2-8, Im not sure if they were expecting that.

  11. Maybe you should look at the type of players they have had. Players quitting mid-season, tells alot about why they are losing. A team will never get better if the players up and quit on the drop of a dime. If Im not mistaken they have had alot of players quitting over the past few years.

  12. Players quitting because they dont like the coach speaks volumes about their character, they are quitters, quit when things were rough, plain and simple.

Want to know why Maryville wins year in and year out? Its because the boys are passionate about the game and have loads of heart, and wouldnt quit if they didnt like the coach.

Quitting because you dont like the coach is no excuse. Maybe thats why Coach Sheppard didnt have more success, things get tough and players quit. Did players quit on Maryville when they started 0-4 in 2000? No, they stuck it out and won a state championship.

  13. Maryville and Alcoa will be tied at half 21-21. But the Red Rebels depth and superior coaching will allow them to pull away, 42-24 Maryville

Halls will come out with some fire and win a close one 17-14 over SC

The Kitty Cats from Central will play sloppy and have several turnovers as the Govs pull off the upset 24-10

  14. Halls defense did not tackle well at all. Offense looks good, but execution was poor. Halls just didnt seem to show up tonight. They looked flat and not physical at all. Coaches put them in position, boys just didnt execute. Offensive line played poor. Backs didnt run hard. QBs seemed rattled early. Receivers made a few plays. Defensive line was not consitent. Secondary wasent tested but didnt tackle well. Linebackers were slow with their reads and didnt tackle well.

Looks like the Red Devils will have a tough week of practice to get their heads screwed on right. I like the offensive scheme, and the defense looks like their old scheme from 4 years ago which was a very good defense. Seems like the success of the Red Devils is rested on the players shoulders, only time will tell.
