  1. Volunteer 15 16 7 6 12 - 56 Sullivan South 15 17 4 8 9 - 53 OT Unofficial Stats Hughes 15 Frazier 15 Mann 14 Cradic 6 Tipton 6 I call them unofficial because I heard some other scoring stats that I believe were different. These add up ane I believe them to be correct. Good win over a AAA school. We had more fans there than they did. Officiating was unsual to say the least. A charge after the ball had been released and the "defender" was behind the backboard on a drive down the middle of the lane. I thought you had to be in defensive position to draw a charge. How can you be in defensive position when you are behind the behind the backboard on a play like that? There is nothing to defend against at that point. The ball had been released and was through the hoop before "contact" was made. Then, the officials were letting them play and then all of a sudden they could not breath on one another without a foul being called.
  2. I suppose that JacoWaco will be happy to learn that Gene Venable resigned as head coach at Volunteer. Some others may be happy also. But, you know sometimes you ought to be careful what you wish for. Sometimes you get your wish and does not turn out like you thought it would. Time will tell.
  3. Clay County and Pickett County may be class A, but they could beat several class AA teams and some class AAA teams from around here, including Happy Valley. If Carroll is conference player of the year then our conference is in trouble. He must be related to HVwarrior. Why else would he hype him so much? From what I've seen Carroll would not even be the player of the year on Happy Valley's team. Because of youth, Volunteer is very inconsistent at this time. Had they played as well against Unaka as they did against Happy Valley they would have beaten Unaka. That is so even though a starter was sitting on the bench the whole night. His ability might have made a difference down the streach. Don't get too happy in the valley because the gym is on the hill and I am not sure it will be as happy up there.
  4. Who has been responsible for calling reports of our games in the past? There has been no story about our last two games in the Times News. I thought the team played very good defense at Happy Valley Tuesday night. I have not figured out how which defense you play affects growth and maturity. It would not be wise to shelve the zone defense. Some nights it is what the doctor ordered, regardless of what Bobby Knight and Stokomo say. Ever wonder why the pros play a zone, even though the rules say you are not supposed to or why they outlawed zone defenses in the first place? Did someone say something about OVERRATED or is that over HYPED? For those interested in stats: Scoring in the Happy Valley game Frazier 23 Mann 8 Cradic 7 Potter 6 Browder 4
  5. There is a difference between a team only scoring 7 points in a quarter and holding a team to only 7 points in a quarter. It loked to me that Unaka was having problems getting untracked. That in my opinion was the for them only scoring 7 points in the first quarter. After that they scored 19, 20 and 19. We scored 16 in the 2nd and 20 in the 3rd. Where was that great defense then? I agree with your other statements, but to say that defense is not a problem is not looking at the whole picture. There were and have been too many of the other team's players running around wide open and shooting lay ups. From your statements, one could infer that your think we are a better defensive team without Jay in the game. If I thought you were making that implication, then I would have to figure that you had completly flipped your lid. Why? Because Jay is probably the best defensive player on the team. Remember, Jay did not play the first quarter against Unaka. By the way we only shot 3 free throws in the first quarter and we made 1. I do not think those two points would have made much difference. Besides the player that missed those two free throws scored 24 points in the game. Yes, we missed some lay ups, but by using the number ten you misrepresent the true impact. You did not point out that some of those misses were on the same trip down court. They would not have translated into 20 points. I agree that the team should have finished off some of those plays. It could have made a difference in the game. The question then is, how many wide open lay ups did Unaka have? Remember, statsitics need to be used with caution, because they can be used to prove almost anything. The object of the game is to score more points than the other team. Teams can win with out scoring a lot of points, if they play great defense. The fact of the matter is that we are very inconsistent. That is probably because of youth. In any event, we need for some one to step up and score other than Jacob and Jay.

  8. Not a good weekend for Falcon fans. We lost two down at Pickett County. My stats are in the car and it has been a long weekend, so don't expect stats right now. We are a young team that has a lot of improving to do before we are a championship caliber team. In my opinion, we could use a lot of the talent that has quit over the last year or two. Our team has several boys with a lot of potential. The problem with potential is that it means you've not done it yet and may never get it done. The fact that a player is probably going to be good in the future does not help this team like a kid with more present skills would. My son is a senior so the fact that some of these players may be all-star caliber next year or the next year does not help him. If that is being selfish, then so be it. Besides we have already seen that you cannot count on the future. If we could, then Lindholm would not be at Twin Springs. But that is water under the bridge. My hope is that this team matures as the year goes along and peaks in February. That is when it counts. Games in December are for show. Games in February are for the hardware that counts. GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!! Keep working hard and good things will happen.
  9. Art, no Volunteer does not play Twin Springs this year. Yes, Central, like Volunteer, will be moving to AAA next year. They will be in the same conference as D-B, Science Hill, et al. Miller, I did not state any rumor. I only made a comment. The comment is based in part on fact and in part on rumor and was my conclusion. It was an off hand comment and needs no other explanation. If you want names etc. read the newspaper.
  10. Superfalcon, some things are better unsaid. I hope rumors are wrong. Otherwise, I know nothing you don't know. In fact you probably know more than I on this subject.
  11. I don't know, but I am afraid that we will find out sooner than we would like.
  12. After running your mouth about beating Volunteer, don't go hiding behind that Class A vs. Class AA stuff. I beleive it was said that cloudland would take Volunteer to the woodshed. The fact of the matter is Volunteer was up by 24 when they called off the dogs. As to your other excuses I say, if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we would all have a merry Christmas. Lesson: Don't talk trash if you cannot back it up.
  13. Yes, the times were changed, but how was anyone supposed to know. All the schedules had the info I provided. 15. bballfan04, we do all of our talking about Volunteer on one thread rather than several threads like the rest of you. If it bothers you that the thread gets long, you do not have to open this thread or read anything on it. In any event it seems to make more sense doing it our way, than opening a new thread for each game does. Like I say, if you do not like how we do things, then you do not have to bother with our thread. It won't hurt our feelings.
  16. Guys, don't let the Cherokee bunch get you all wound up. Let them believe whatever they are going to believe. That is what makes beating them so much fun. We do not need to give them any locker room material. Besides, talk is cheap.
  17. Superfalcon, DP was talking about us going with the conference down the road, which is the IMAC or Mountain Lakes. The conference you are taking about is up the road. i.e. Dobyns Bennett, Science Hill etc.
  18. November 20 they play at Volunteer.
  19. If our guys will stay disciplined, both on and off the court, we will surprise some people this year. It looks like one of the health concerns is behind us. Mann should be on the court very soon after practice begins. I wish a couple of the guys who quit would come back, but it does not look like that is going to happen. They would be a big help this year even it they did not start. The bench looks like it is going to be young.
  20. JIMA6578, Lindholm did not score 99% of Volunteer's points last year. Further, there was no problem between Lindholm and Frazier.
  21. The Jamboree is at Central and Volunteer plays North at 8:45. I do not know the rest of the pairings.
  22. DP, I think you are getting football confused with the other sports. volunteer will probably have to go down the road in football because of so many teams, like North, playing up a class. We will still be 4A for football but we will be 3A for all other sports.
