Unfortunately, this event schedulded for today is canceled due to the fact Gordan Central didn't have school today. I don't know if it will be rescheduled.
  3. Not being a wordsmith; my attempt to recapture this afternoon will fall short. How proud I was of the Tri-State wrestling community for turning out in full force - a fine demonstation of support. There had to be at least 3000 in attendance for this memorable event - from Middle-Tennessee, North Georgia, et al. I wish I had taken notes. One could not imagine a tale like this in a storybook. The air was fraught with excitement - aticipation intense. UTC fought their hearts out - a text book example of guts and character. Surely, the number 4 team in the nation left the shadow of Lookout Mountain with a little more respect. Terry Brands has been heard. After the wrestling ended, Dan Gable addressed the cheering crowd. Coach Gable impressed the wrestling faithful with his message. Even if you never wrestled, you'd want to. Anyway, be pleased to know how good our area looked this afternoon across the country. If you think Chattanooga looks good now...just wait! Go Mocs!

  6. Sly: Thanks for posting the teams - tough competition. The starting time for Friday might be 5:00 PM. My kid wrestles for Notre Dame and brought home a hand-out saying wrestling would begin at 5:00 PM on Friday. Weigh-ins on Friday at 3:00 PM and weigh-ins Saturday morning at (yawn) 7:00 AM. This tournament will be exciting.
  7. Back to the original subject. The tournament will be Friday and Saturday. Notre Dame of Chattanooga will be there but that's the only team I know attending. If you know other teams - please post. Go Fighting Irish!
  8. The following teams will be particapating: Chattanooga Central, Central Square/New York, Cookeville, Dade County, Ga., Gordon Central, Grundy County, Howard, Hixson, Notre Dame, Ooltewah, Ridgeland, Soddy Daisy, St. Andrews, and Warren County. Let's hope the Chattanooga paper covers it.
  9. There is an excellent website offering an electronic petition dedicated to changing Title IX. It's at: www.illsportsadvocacy.com You can sign this petition in complete confidence your information will remain private. The website offers other features that will interest the wrestling community. Please check it out.
  10. I enjoyed this movie immensely: especially after watching it the second time. This story, about a father's unconditional love for his son, wrung my heart. As the father of a 15 year old wrestler; I could relate with the father's desire to make a brighter future for his son. It's the dream of every parent, regardless of what their child aspires to be. 'Reversal' drives home a powerful message about the difference between right and wrong. The life-threatening measures used to cut weight stand revealed for what they truly are - dangerous. The sad thing is; it actually happened to writer/producer, Jimi Petulla who portrays the father in the movie. It also tells the tender story of an adolescent coming of age, attempting to balance the over-zealous expectations of his father/coach with the enormouus peer pressure all teenagers face. The son (Leo) constantly struggles against his desire to please his dad and the lure of a social life. Incidentally, Danny Mousetis does a marvelous job portraying the pain and internal conflict Leo had to face. There is an admirable profile in courage appearing at the end of the movie. The son had the fortitude to quit wrestling and do what he wanted to do. Not what his father or his team wanted him to do. That took guts. Not many kids would be brave enough to make that decision under those circumstances. This is another good lesson the movie delivers - Don't do anything you don't want to do simply because someone else wants you to. Be yourself. Lastly, the social and training issues brought up in this film provided the perfect segue to have a frank discussion with my son. We openly discussed the extremes Leo went to just so he could make weight; and we also talked about the social issues of teen drinking and smoking marijuana, both of which are taboo. Ummm...we skipped over the subject of condoms. That's for another time. This good movie is not about wrestling. It could have revolved around any other sport or activity where excellence and dedication are required. It's a heart-breaking story about a father and son relationship and watching a boy become a man. If all you got out of 'Reversal' was abusive training tactics and misguided parenting; I hope you'll watch it again.

  12. Last year, Mat Bird, East Ridge, came within an eyelash of winning the state, finishing runner-up. This year...he's tanned and rested.

Indeed, Coach Lennon is still at Notre Dame High School doing his usual superlative job. Here's a funny for you - The kids don't like it when Head Coach Mullin is away because Coach Lennon drills them harder when he's left in charge. I guess that's one of the many reasons ND wrestlers don't give out in the third period. Not only is Coach Lennon an outstanding wrestling coach but his influence on the kids is far reaching. Hollywood could not invent a better role model. As the father of of an ND sophmore I can only say how lucky we are to have Coach Lennon instruct our kids in wrestling, and, more importantly, the importance of character and good sportsmanship. He accomplishes both. Go Irish!
