  1. This is very disappointing to read.

Back in my day (and that was a long time ago), Stratford had great athletes and fielded some very good teams. One of the best games that I was ever involved in was the Stratford-MBA game in 1986 at MBA in the monsoon with Joe Campbell (MTSU) and Bernard Womack (I think) leading the way for Stratford. We were very fortunate to beat them that night and move on to Gallatin in the second round of the playoffs.

Do whatever it takes to get the kids out there.

    Good luck, Spartans.

  2. Very cool video. I wonder if MBA has ever considered putting together a historical compilation like UT did for their 100th year? I would assume they still have films going back to Owen's early years. MBA has an archive, and I was amazed at what wasn't there: game programs, etc. What I wouldn't give to have my 1970 Clinic Bowl Program (or my 1969 Cumberland-Clarksville Burt Blanket Bowl program).

Mentioning historical BA figures, does anybody remember Steve Inglis?

As I understand it, a video archive is in the works.

  3. Hey there, wait a minute. Blame TSSAA for everything. Did anyone consider that there may be little interest in Division II from the television stations and, most important, potential advertisers?

I am sure that no one in Nashville would have wanted to watch the MBA-BA game on a chilly November night when BA was trying to avenge its one loss and MBA was undefeated. If only the teams could have had some D-I talent then maybe it could have drawn some local interest.

  4. do you ever wonder why there are no McCallie, or Baylor, or MUS, or even Ensworth posters on the MBA-BA thread, but there are about 5-6 Ryan posters, all writing the same thing? So you can't help them by ignoring them...they are who they are.

Correct. That is why we ignore and move ahead.

  5. Yea, m a x p r e p s .com isnt working, do you mean unapproved website?

EDIT: Ah! I get it, anytime you put a website it says unapproved website. I c wat u did thar.

    To all,

As I stated in an earlier post. Leave this young fellow to himself/herself. Ignore him/her, and he'll/she'll go away.

  6. No doubt that this was a great MBA team. Very physical. Controlling the ball against that BA defensive line was a big accomplishment. But I think your listing of top MBA teams missed the best one. The 1999 team beat Bolles on the field in a great game, and other than that didn't play a single game that was remotely close. Beat everybody in the Super 7 by 5 or 6 touchdowns in the regular season and then smoked McCallie 35-7 or something like that in the semis, and absolutley crushed Christian Bros in the finals 49-15 and it wasn't that close-- CB's points came against the backups and MBA had 35 at the half, as I recall. Ingle Martin, Barton Simmons, Tate Rich, Jonas Rodriguez, and lots of others who went on to play in college. The only teams in Tennessee that I've seen that I think could have given them a game were maybe the BA teams of the mid 90's (Kurston Biggers, Austin Kemp, Tito Lee) and some of Riverdale's great teams--- especially the 1994 team (Fernando Bryant, Antron Peebles, Alvin Duke, David Coppeans). MBA's 1999 team just had a bunch of weapons-- not to diminish in any way the achievment of this year's team, but, in my book the '99 team was one of the elite teams ever in Tennessee and the standard against which all MBA teams should be judged. Of course, that's just my opinion.

I agree. In my years of being around HS football. The '99 MBA team is the most dominant that I have ever seen. The match up that I wish we could have created would have been the '99 team against the Byrnes team that pasted MBA at Vandy ( I forget the year). BA's team in '80 or '81 with Austin at the helm as a Senior was one of the best too.

  7. Sounds like you said/believe the same thing I said. As I said in my post....Maryville is small, yet well coached and has confidence they can win, but they are not an MBA. They also don't wish to play great teams unlike Smyrna or Indy does. Neither team HAD to play BA or MBA and take a loss, but look where both teams are....one game away from the state championship. I wish this MBA team could have played in the Herbstriet Classic....

100, we are on the same page. I was simply recommending to the Big Red Dog that there is no need to speculate on the outcome of a Maryville/MBA contest. With the schedules that teams like BA and MBA play, going 13-0 in this division speaks for itself. MBA is the best team in the State, much like BA was last year...

Let Maryville be proud of what they accomplish; they should be. George has built a 4A dynasty there! For Maryville fans, that is stated in complete respect not in a condescending tone. I know how people tend to take statements on this board the wrong way; don't do it with that statement.

  8. P.S.- I'd sure like to see Maryville try to beat this team.

    Roll Red!

No need to go there BRD. Maryville has a fine 4A program. I have tons of respect for George and what he has built there.

We all know that Maryville has been the dominant 4A program for several years; there has been much speculation as to how Maryville would compete against MBA or BA. In a single game match up against either BA or MBA, it would probably be a close game.

The difference in what makes MBA and BA better over all programs is the schedule they play. Not only do MBA and BA play a much tougher conference schedule than Maryville does in 4A East TN; their out of conference games are against the best that 4A and 5A have to offer. As BA found out when it moved up from 2A and ultimately into D-II, playing quality opponents every week takes its effect on a team. Your starters are playing much deeper into the game each week, and you lose more of those starters to injury throughout the season resulting in much greater challenges as the playoffs arrive.

Maryville has a fantastic program, but it does not compete at the highest level in the State; therefore, it will continue to dominate 4A ball and know that as good as they are, they still do not compete against the best the state has to offer.

  9. Montgomery Bell Academy and Brentwood Academy...

    two class programs....

    Amen!

Congrats to both teams on being the best in the State and representing their schools most appropriately.

    Two great defenses.

Congrats to McGuigan and Potter on great seasons!

    Well done gentlemen! Well done!

  10. Hadouken is a Father Ryan supporter. He apparently dislikes MBA just slightly more than BA.

Just ignore him like all of the rest of us do. He amuses himself.

Those of us that have been around a while can take a shot at each other from time to time, but we still respect each other's opinion.

He, on the other hand, has proven that his thoughts and comments are worthless. Just let him post and laugh at himself while we actually discuss topics from a level a tad bit higher than his.

His signature says all we need to know.

Ignore him, and he will go away.

    Back to the game...

  11. Since the split, what is the record in games between the two?

From memory, it seems that MBA has the lead in head to head competition; is that accurate?

In the State Championship games head up, I believe that MBA has the lead as well.

I think it is safe to say that BA has always been the favorite, except the 2 years with Ingle at QB. I believe they have always been favored because of the talent level and depth; I can't say that I've called it any differently.

MBA always seems to answer the bell in the big games, especially when they are the underdog.

Once again, the Big Red will be the "dog" in this one, because Chris Jordan is back.

We'll see if they can answer yet again.

    Roll Red Roll!

  12. Interestingly enough, both teams put up 42 points tonight -- looks like there may be some offense too! If Cody Nelson and DJ Luna play like they did tonight I like BA's chances. Nice to have a little balance on the offensive side of the ball. Should be a great game. I think BA is relatively healthy -- how is MBA?

With respect, Ensworth's and Ryan's Defenses are not at the level of BA's and MBA's.

Anyone attempting to guess the outcome of this one is doing just that, guessing. As witnessed in the first game, these two are very evenly matched. Injurues hurt both in the first game, but both appear healthy for this one. Will Chris Jordan wear MBA down? Will Waddey, Vinsang, and that O line do the same to BA?

My guess is that this will come down to protecting the football and the kicking game.

This is too close to call.

  13. Solid effort tonight by the Big Red. Well done, gentlemen!

Congratulations again to Father Ryan on a great season! It is very nice for this game to be back where it belongs.

For all of you trash talkers on this board, the student-athletes on the field conducted themselves a lot more maturely than you on this board.

Next week's match up is entirely appropriate. MBA and BA have proven themselves to be the two best in the State of TN. It should be a great game.

Here's to a hard fought and injury free game!

  14. I am with fan6 on this one. This will be a tough game for BA. I think that Ensworth wears down a little toward the end and BA pulls away 21-10, but the game seems closer than the score. A lot will be determined by Ensworth's ability to convert through the air. If the QB has time and he hits his receivers, this could be closer. I don't think they can win on ground - I don't care how well things went against CBHS.

No one is talking ball security here. One of BA's biggest weaknesses has been putting the ball on the ground. You don't have to lose the fumble for it to play a big role against you. For the past several years it seems, BA has had a tendency to put it on the ground. The ones they haven't lost are still drive killers. The saving grace has been that defense, and it is dang good.

BA is not alone, Ensworth had similar issues at MBA this year, but their defense played very well and kept them very much in the game to the end.

If Ensworth is plus 2 in turnovers, this game comes down to the last possession. If the TO column is equal, then BA adds another score late to make it a two possession win.

    Just my thoughts...

  15. I agree wholeheartedly with the post on the first page that this rivalry should be treated with a little more respect...It`s been over 35 years since I roamed the halls on Elliston place, so I guess I`m closer to cro-magnon status....I am under no illusions about the game Friday. MBA should, and, probably will win this game. They have clearly demonstrated their penchant to win against quality opposition this season. They don`t do anything fancy, but they do have excellent execution and don`t make many mistakes....That being said, I`m still proud of the Irish.....They WILL show up at MBA and play the game!! ...They have made steady progress under Coach Lussier......This year, they were able to defeat every team they were supposed to...and , if their 3 losses come to MBA and Brentwood Academy, that`s nothing to be ashamed of.....Considering where we were 4 years ago, I`ll take 9-3...This year has been a lot of fun....In the world of Division II, every game you play is against a quality, well coached opponent. Ryan and JPII will always participate with somewhat of a handicap, but that`s life! As former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld once said, "You go to battle with the Army you have, not the one you wish you had"

    Go Irish !!

    DS2001,

Thanks for a strong post. You would be a solid addition to a mature board that discusses appropriate topics related to the game. Obviously, the post on the first page has been largely ignored.

Thanks again for an insightful and appreciative post for the efforts that have been put forth by the student-athletes at Ryan! I agree that it is great to have this rivalry back where it belongs as the best rivalry in the State of TN. I congratulate the school, the administration, the coaches, and the students on building the program back to where it belongs.

Here's to a safe and hard fought game on both sides! May the teams win and lose with the character that has forged this great rivalry, not that has been displayed by outsiders on this board.

    Go Big Red!

  16. By all means, let me know the url...it's been a miserable season on the boards here. Obviouly I follow the MBA games closer than anything else, and some of the posts relating to MBA, Ryan, and Ensworth have been downright embarrassing to everybody involved.

And thank you for the compliment, but who are you calling old?

I'm assuming that your discussion of a game from the 70's would date you to that era of MBA football. I consider myself old, especially on this board, and I played in the 80's. Therefore, you are ancient!

  17. My first thought when I read this post was a very cynical one, thinking this was the ultimate form of whining "The referees beat us"; not that they were inept, or even biased, but that they were actually bought off.

And then I though about how much money there was at MBA, and thought maybe the writer had a point: maybe MBA wasn't particularly good, and never had been, they just paid off the officials. Then I wondered about the '70's, when we had a long dry spell, especially against Ryan. Why didn't somebody pay the referees, especially in '73, when the difference was only a field goal, and a win might have put MBA into the playoffs? Ina game that close, it shouldn't have taken a lot; we probably could have raised it in the stands that night. It seems awfully tight-fisted and short-sighted to have trusted to talent to win it. Then I wondered why MBA had ever lost, but that seemed silly; I mean, there clearly is a limit to the cash. But still, it seems a good investment to pay for wins in district/region games, and certainly the playoffs. I think back to the loss to Ryan in the '97 State Championship, and had always assumed that the difference lay in slightly better execution from Ryan, which is painful, but I can live with it. But to think it was just a matter of a check not being sent? Unconscionable, and shoddy! Think of that loss to BA a few years back when there was controversy over whether their game-winning field goal came after time expired: Did BA outbid us, for heaven's sake? That left me livid. I've said for years the recruiting director (whoever he is, nobody seems to know when I call out there) should be fired, but do we also need to get rid of the Assistant Athletic Director for Insuring Favorable Officiating? I found myself thinking maybe they need a wholesale housecleaning out on Harding Road, and as an alumnus I should start the ball rolling.

And then I thought about it again, and decided Statebound's post was one of the most ridiculous and whiny posts I had ever read, and went on about my business.

There is a good chance your work here wins a literary prize this year. Well stated!

Maybe I can work with CoachT to create a site for us old guys so that we can leave the trash talkers here and actually discuss the games, the teams, and the issues surrounding HS sports.

  18. OK guys, let's get ready for this perenial matchup!

This will be the first matchup of many more games to follow between these two schools! I look forward to this game. Myself and others at BA have a deep respect for Coach Bowers. We have been on the recieving end of more than a few losses from him!

I was over at Ensworth over the summer (August) for my daughters basketball games, and watched a little of Ensworth's practice. They definitely have athletes and a great coach.

    My pick......BA 28 Ensworth 7 /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Having watched both play several times this year, I think it will be closer than that. I think BA will pull it out late with depth, but it will be closer than BA would like it to be.

This should be a great game. Good luck to both!

  19. And the purpose is...???

A whole lot of people weren't able to enjoy the games tonight thanks to the decision by the TSSAA. I simply do not understand. Don't give us the "it will take away from the gate" excuse.

The TSSAA needs to think a little bigger...

As this site demonstrates, people from all over the country want to follow their schools; keeping a fan in NY or LA from watching the game is ridiculous. The real issue impacting the gate or lack there of is the result of the travel created by the TSSAA's re-classification. The travel negatively impacts the amount of support the visiting team can bring, and to add insult to injury, the TSSAA then refuses schools the ability to stream the games back to those who could not attend in person.

This justs in..., you could partner with the schools and charge for the streaming just like you do with the gate.

There are many options TSSAA; just give us back the ability to follow our teams!
