  1. Red robin, you are WAY off base. I dont have one single issue with a kid receiving financial aid to a private school as their educational system is usually better than a public school. It is when that "financial aid" is used to help a good athlete to attend that particular school. There are tons of extremely smart kids in the city school systems that the financial aid to a private school (or D2 which is how your refer to it which designates sports conference) would benefit greatly but they dont run a 4.4 or are a gifted athlete. You are beating a dead horse if you dont think some private schools solicit athletes for their sports programs. You can spin it any way you want...it happens..sorry.

Absolutely right, some privates recruit for sports period, so what, you think this is a secret to anyone involved in sports in the state of Tennessee. But some privates are honest and use their financial aid for its intended purpose. Some private schools have alumni that have deep pockets and don't mind paying for everything, no secret either, so whats your point. If a student applies, any student and they qualify for financial aid and can do the academics, they get the aid. Do you think Ensworth goes over to Haynes middle school and a few other places just to watch the grass grow. Hardly. :| By the way just because a potential student can play ball doesn't mean that he or she should be punished or denied the opportunity to attend a private school, its those alumni that are difficult to monitor, it happens something like this, the students parents or parent look at his or her checking account and all of a sudden there are more funds there, what a mystery.

One more comment, there is no such thing as an academic scholarship at any private school I know of. Red Robin is giving you accurate infomation.

    Takin' Out the Trash Talk

Why do some coaches curse? Do they really think foul language motivates their players to excellence?

Frankly, I don't see any evidence that shows cursing coaches are winners—either in victories or in reputation. I think coaches who don't cuss get more respect—from players, fans and the community—than those coaches who do.

One college basketball coach who talked trash said that when he recruited high-school stars, he was surprised to find that his colorful language was an issue.

One athlete asked him straight up, "Do you curse?"

    "Yes," said the coach.

"I don't like cursing," said the athlete.

"Well," the coach said … And he went on to use a four-letter word.

    I couldn't believe the coach's disrespect.

The coach later said, "This cursing thing is completely blown out of proportion."

    Oh, really?

I won't say that cursing coaches can't win; Indiana University's Bob Knight, as foul-mouthed as they come, has won a ton of basketball games. But many of his players—and many others—resent his way with words.

As for the coach who says cursing "is completely blown out of proportion," he won just 36 out of 83 games in three years at a major university—winning significantly less than half the time.

Obviously, trash talk didn't do much for him—or his players. And he's no longer at that school.

Now look at another coach—North Carolina's Dean Smith, who retired in October after coaching the Tar Heels for 36 years. Dean kept it clean; foul language just wasn't part of his nature. He was one of the classiest coaches of all time.

And by the way, he was also the best coach of all time. He won 879 games, more than any other coach in college basketball history. And two national championships.

    What about your coaches?

If they're keeping it clean, be sure to tell them how much you appreciate it; they'll appreciate the feedback.

But if your coach uses foul language, feel free to address it—either in a private meeting or in a personal note, not in front of teammates. If someone else on the team feels the same way, both of you can meet with the coach together, but don't get a bunch of people to "gang up" on him or her.

Keep calm, and keep your comments positive. Instead of saying, "I hate it when you cuss," say something like, "You know, Coach, those types of words don't motivate me at all. Would you mind trying to encourage me without those words? Thanks."

Your coach will most likely appreciate your honesty. After all, he or she has the same goals you do—to have fun while trying to win.

Actually the all time coach in wins in basketball or any other sport is Pat Summitt. She has approximately two hundred more wins than Dean Smith, be more than that after this season. Just thought I would point out this error. :D Ps she has won eight national titles.

My archives are just fine and dandy. Your archives also is still there for all to see. You should be nicer to your ole suspension buddy. :roflol:

  4. One can only imagine what type of crowd Father Ryan would have if they had a football program that competed for championships every year.

The stadium only holds a certain amount of fans. Is it worth compromising their integrity in an effort to build championship football teams. You know what has to happen in order for that to occur. Athletics at Ryan are going along just fine. Two state titles already this current year. Tuition for a Catholic child with parish assistance is over 10,000 a year. The first priority should be to make every effort to prevent Ryan from becoming a school where only the affluent can attend as Mr Jim Carroll ( huge benefactor) stated at a ground-breaking ceremony. :)

  5. Big rivalry game for the Bishop's Cup... What are your predictions? Ryan is 3-3, JPII 2-4

Unless JPII gets a win soon, the rivalry is akin to the Ryan-MBA, only an emotional one, not based on wins and losses, because Ryan has dominated the series. This game might be close, but I think that Ryan wins for the sixth year in a row. The Bishops Cup is all shined up. :)

  6. Yeah, an outside firm that people in the school have a lot of influence with, especially if it is for a gifted athlete. Almost all of the inner city kids who play sports for a private school are on some type of financial assistance. Those "academic scholarships" are a big part of why the privates ar in a div. all their own.

Yes,that would make sense that alot of inner city kids would qualify for need based financial aid since poverty is at a very high level in the inner city. Your handle is almost the same as the name of a popular condom. That fits you since your opinions are a reflection of your pointy head. Private schools are allowed to give need based financial aid for those that qualify and its not going to change, so you might as well get over it. Nothing wrong with this practice at all. :D

  7. I'm from East Tennessee and their are several private schools in my area (CAK, Catholic, and Webb). I am good friends with the basketball coach at CAK and I know for a fact that he doesn't recruit. I know a freshman at Catholic that is a stud athlete in both basketball and football and he was not recruited. His parents chose Catholic for the academics and are not recieving any aid whatsoever. In fact they are paying more than the average student because they are not Catholic. In our area its the public schools that are the biggest recruiters.

Interesting, but Catholic is in Div I and cannot give any financial aid whatsoever to a student unless they elect not to play sports.

  8. It looks like its wide open. Its as close as its been in several years. Check back in a couple of weeks. BA has the most experience returning this year. Could be there year?

Brentwood Academy will be in the hunt for the simple fact that they returning virtually every starter they have. But I don't think it is wide open by any means. GPS,BA,Ensworth, and never forget Briarcrest.

  9. My statements speak for themselves and at times have included comments about a lot of circumstances which all have made differences or I would not have made any comment. Thats the reason for the comment. Major things have happened to players, parents, fans, etc, which I have felt have put another face on this site other than just Volleyball but let those thruout the state know that those playing and involved are just people with the same problems and concerns as many others we don't know about. Many who I didn't know have come up to me expressing thanks to know personally who a person might be. Sickness, injuries, accidents and other things have made me think that the game is just part of this site. Players, parents, fans have tried to relate situations to their own situation. Right now, as you might know and expect, there are many who still keep up by name with these circumstances as well as others and mentioned so at State. Some asked why some things were mentioned and the circumstances just two nights ago when I attended an event in Nashville. Fans want to feel a part of what they are supporting. Booster Club members thruout the State along with the Coaches make things work and they might not post much, but they want to keep up with what is going on and even right now, this season was crammed full of things that some would like to keep up with. Coaches, Fans, players are personalities, "Rock Stars">:rolleyes:

Well, doggone, I am going to have to agree with you. The game as all games are just a part of all the sites. There are far more important things as we both know. The best to all players everywhere and be thankful for the ability to play and the opportunity. :)

  10. PPlayer, lets see, you enrolled in CT in August 03, seem to be a young lady but likely you are posting on an older screen name or trying to get 5sport and ST riled up. You succeeded. Strength in AA was Page and will be for a few years. AAA strength has yet to be seen. Too many players at too many schools to find out. Club has evened everything out and now it has become very easy to figure out before State, who will be in the top slots. I can almost do it right now for next year with club being played as it is now and Tournaments being held as they are now. Too many large Tournaments and the real surprises only came from D2 when pre tournament events meant really nothing as far as State was concerned. It seems to happen that way in every State in every Division. What makes the difference? While coaches have gotten much better, more better coaches will make the difference it appears to me, along with better programs and coaches with great technical abilities entering the scene. The second thing is Middle Schools and the TSSAA need to get their organizational hats on and organize the Middle School Programs like the High Schools but not in Divisions. One Division. There will be plenty of opposition to that. There will likely be some support to that also. More qualified teacher, coach personnel are needed in the system.

Your statement about pre-tournament events I hope is not implying that the starting setter for Ryan who had to battle Cancer versus playing did not make any difference. It made a huge difference. But we are very happy that she is winning the battle of cancer and that makes volleyball seem kind of trivial at this point. Addendum--by the way Phillip, what happened to Seagull? Now I am under your skin. :roflol::roflol:

  11. I have been enjoying the state tournament. But where is Greenbrier? How can a state power not make the playoffs this year, the weakest year in memory for AA? All of the power this year was in AAA.

If they didn't do it this year, they are a 1 hit wonder.

    Also, where was Father Ryan?

You mean back to back state title wonder. Ryan is just fine and dandy, we have 5 titles, how many do you have as a player, or did you ever play period. :D

  12. How does a private school like Father Ryan not make the state Tournament? Now that they split the privates into 2 divisions every private school in the state makes the tournament.

Ryan volleyball is dead in the water.

This was a down year for quality teams except for AAA which was loaded. Teams with losing records made the play-offs. A school like Ryan should be in the finals every year playing Division II.

Sad to see a once proud program fade away.

Its even sadder to see you attempted veiled statement which is totally false. Once again, one or two years seems to make or break a program as far as you are concerned. Please post about your individual accomplishments in volleyball for all to read. Ryan is just fine as everyone with volleyball sense knows. Your post contains a positive-negative in your description of Ryan. A sure fire sign of a confused mind. :D

  13. Which team will win the State Championship?

    Ensworth

    Can they repeat?

    Briarcrest

Can they get one more win (Runnerup last year)

    St. Benedict

Can they get back to state and win.

    Pope JohnII

Can they get back to state and win.

How about Brentwood Acad., Baylor, GPS, Harpeth Hall........

Who has the capability of winning State!

    :popcorneater:

Ensworth, certainly can, have a powerful freshman coming in. Pope, no way. Briarcrest, maybe.

  14. I doubt there'll be any coffee. If they've hired detail officers from Cookeville PD or Putnam SO, there'll be doughnuts, but don't count on them sharing (I never shared ammunition or doughnuts, and I think I was pretty typical). I don't know if there's any truth to the rumor, but my understanding is they they're hoping that since there's a deacon's meeting at LAFBC just prior to the game, they can pursuade some fo the deacons to stay and officiate the game. It's a cost cutting/revenue enhancement measure.

If Ryan upsets MBA, Center Point on me. :)

  15. IMO, you are missing the reason for reclassifying as far as CPA is concerned. And it has nothing to do with football. Could it have something to do with another sport and they eventually really don't care which classification in D2 that they play in, in fact, they would like to play in the large school. Their thrust is Basketball. Football would just be iceing on the cake. Aid is another issue and Overton is the other school population that could be involved. Just an opinion. IMO, CPA would not be happy in small school in anything because they thrive on a larger goal(goals), unless its changed.

You must be talking about one or two basketball players who uh hmm transferred recently. But they should care about whether they play in A or AA in Div II, it will be the difference between possibly winning titles and maybe never winning one. :D
